The Picard/Vash relationship that you've developed in your fanfic - while a lot of fun, BTW - is not reflective of what transpired in canon and to suggest otherwise is wishful thinking.

I truly appreciate your kind words about my fanfiction, which is my own extrapolation of how the P/V relationship might have developed. :)

However, it is not accurate to dismiss Vash as nothing but a casual fling. I offer my canon proof that Picard has serious feelings for Vash. In the episode Qpid, Q makes the point of his game very clear.

Q "This human emotion, love, it's a dangerous thing, Picard and obviously you're ill-equipped to handle it. She's found vulnerability in you, a vulnerability I've been looking for for years. If I'd known sooner, I would have appeared as a female. Mark my words, Picard, this is your Achilles heel . . . You deny that you care for this woman? Believe me I'd be doing you a big favor if I turned her into a Klabnian eel . . . I was just trying to help . . . You would have me stand idly by as she led you to your destruction?" To which

Picard answers an emphatic Yes!

In the Tower:
Q "Sadly, they're all fine... but the point is they could have been killed, and you might have been too... all for the "Love Of A Maid." My debt to you is paid, Picard, if you have learned how weak and vulnerable you really are... if you can finally see how "Love" brought out the worst in you...

Vash "Nonsense. You're absolutely wrong. It brought out the best in him. (to Picard, intimately) His nobility, courage, self-sacrifice. His tenderness."

Q (to Vash) "You're good. Very good."

Picard (end of his patience) "Enough of this."

Q "Indeed."

IN THE READY ROOM

Picard ENTERS. As the doors CLOSE behind him Vash MATERIALIZES.

Vash "Hello, Jean-Luc."

Picard "(smiling) Well, this is a relief. I was afraid that Q...

Vash "There were a few things he wanted to discuss with me."

Picard "I'm surprised he wasn't too busy gloating over his victory."

Vash "He was right about one thing, Jean-Luc. As ridiculous as it was, his game did prove you still care."

Picard while gently stroking Vash's cheek "I may not share my feelings with my crew, but I do have them."

Q is victorious because Picard has serious feelings for Vash.

we are now receiving what we knew should have happened much earlier - recognition of a Picard-Crusher relationship, and marriage, and a baby.

It was always meant to happen, and now it has.

As far as canon is concerned (although it may be on the cutting room floor, it's still on the DVDs), she did - indeed - save the last dance for him.

My original point was that this is your own wishful thinking and that deleted scenes as well as novels are not canon.

Methinks the ladies protest too much.

178 episodes and 4 feature films. Vash appears in 1 season 3 episode and 1 season 4 episode and then is gone forever, never to be mentioned or seen in TNG ever again - not in the remaining 3 years of the tv series, not in any of the 4 films.

Picard's "serious feelings" for her are obviously being kept very close to his chest.

She's less than a "casual fling," she's a canon fling.

Actually, Vash does appear again in DS9's first season episode Q-Less. The fact that Picard and Vash had a romantic relationship is canon.

Now, to get this thread back on topic about the extent of Picard and Crusher's relationship; I will restate that none of the evidence you submitted above (the novels or deleted scenes) is considered canon.

You know, I reckon there's room enough here for all of us without a 'shipping war. The TNG canon is closed now, and liable to remain so forever. It's interpretable, but immutable. At this stage in the game, we're not going to get any more canon to rock the boat.

We can all have our own ships and think the 'shippers on the other side are mad/blind/stupid/delusional or whatever. It's clear we have different readings of - or perhaps prefer different facets of - Picard's character.

One doesn't need to sink P/C to float P/V or vice versa. At the end of the day, we all invest alot of ourselves and our own interpretation into our ships. There's no need to fight for a win on this.

Woah Nellie's invested enough in P/V that she's created a whole much-lauded fanfic AU for the couple. I'll admit straight out that my love for P/C goes beyond detached analysis - fifteen years of reading and writing 'fic tends to push it beyond the realm of academic interest.

I very much doubt we're going to change each other's hearts at this stage in the game. But we can all be squeeing shippers together without having to take pirate shots at each other, can't we?

And hey, we can all probably agree that Picard/Anij comes from Satan. (She says, undermining her own point.)

Aawh, SiorX - you're spoiling all the fun by placing your sweet functionally rational self - bang smack in the middle of a Star Trek debate between committed fans.

You party pooper!
