We have been having an interesting discussion about the nature of Atlantis lately, and where it is, and if should be sent back to the Pegasus galaxy or not.

1.) The first thing is, we are not certain where it is at this specific time. The last we saw, Atlantis was on Earth as of the SGA finale. So far, there has been no factual information stated from the show that Atlantis is anywhere else. So we must assume it is still on Earth. Some will argue it may be "elsewhere" but IMO we can't just say that, we have to with what is said on screen. So I put it to a vote, Where do you think Atlantis is right now?

2.) The second argument is that we know that if SGA got renewed they were going to find a way and a reason to send Atlantis back to the Pegasus galaxy. Some argue that this wouldn't really make sense. For example, the project/mission to find the lost city of the Ancients was fulfilled, they found it and not only that, but brought it home. At this point, you have the greatest city/ship the Ancients ever built, with all its advanced technology and databases of knowledge right there on Earth. The IOA/Governments of Earth who know about the Stargate program would never allow such a great asset to Earth just fly millions of light years away again. The mandate for the Stargate program is to procure advanced technologies, and I'd say Atlantis falls into that category, and its right there on Earth for them to study and possibly use a base.

Some would argue the reason for sending it back to the Pegasus galaxy would be to fight the Wraith and use as a base there. But, IMO, you wouldn't just send your greatest asset like that there with the potential for losing it. Instead, the SGC can easily build a base on a planet there, inside a mountain if they want, or whatever, and use Deadalus class ships to rage war with the Wraith. In fact, Earth shouldn't even really be concerned with the Wraith at this point, since they are cut off from getting to Earth with their slow hyperdrives, and/or don't know the location. So far, we've seen Earth be concerned about the Lucian Alliance, and have said nothing about worrying about the Wraith.

So, I put this to a vote too, do you think Atlantis should have stayed on Earth or gone back to the Pegasus Galaxy.

The poll is Multiple Choice so that you can pick both categories, please only make one vote per Category.

Re: Atlantis Where are you? And To Pegasus or Not, That is the Questi

Logically speaking, Atlantis should stay on Earth since there is no reason at all to send it back to Pegasus. Like you said, even if Earth wanted to maintain a presence in Pegasus they could just send the Daedalus or some other ship and build their own base there. Of course thuis base wouldn't be as powerful as Atlantis, and there's a greater chance it could fall to the Wraith. But the Atlantis gang did a pretty good job keping the city's existence secret from the Wraith after the second season. And after the third season I don't think the Wraith aside from Todd and his cohorts learned the new location of Atlantis.

Of course, the novel relaunce follows the idea of the DVD movie of sending the city back to Pegasus, after what amounts to O'Neill and Woolsey working together to manipulate every loophole of every treaty and other legal documents until the IOA finally get so upset they order Atlantis back to Pegasus just shut the two of them up. That is an exaggeration, but not by much. Until the SGU crossover episode, which is said to answer some of these questions, this is all we really have to go on in regards to the current status of Atlantis.

Atlantis should absolutely stay on Earth. Sending it back to Pegasus is a huge, and needless, risk.

Well the Wraith are still in their civil war. An unknown number of humans, and in unknown populations are immune to feeding (and more than that, lethal to the Wraith). Todd, at least, sees the benefit of being able to gain sustenance from normal food.
So the question really is, did Todd leave Atlantis to rejoin his Alliance right away, or did he stay in Atlantis until Keller could perfect the "Cure" and then take it back with him to his Alliance? If it is the latter than Atlantis would have no reason to return and we could just send the Daedalus and Apollo to support Todd's fleet in wiping out the remaining normal Wraith.
After the extinction of the normal Wraith we could rebuild Midway and set up a permanent in-mountain base/colony to facilitate relations between Todd's Wraith, the humans of Pegasus, and the Taur'i.

From an in-story perspective yes, but for the viewer that would be a bit boring.

Well, since the story's over, it doesn't really matter what the viewer thinks. :p

*watches Skywalker's avatar approximately eight hundred times* Whoa, what? Oh, right, it's a Stargate thread.

The story being over doesn't change what the viewers would like to see. It should matter what the viewers think...but of course, ever since the writers were replaced with Goa'uld, it hasn't.

Re: Atlantis Where are you? And To Pegasus or Not, That is the Questi

I wouldn't have minded an entire season of Atlantis ON EARTH. They could still travel to the Pegasus galaxy for stories, and we could actually have a lot of Earth based stories, which I always enjoy, and *gasp* maybe even finally fully exploring the city. There really is a lot of potential there if Atlantis had indeed stayed on Earth the entire rest of the series.

Originally the series was meant to be set on Earth, with the replicators as an enemy, but Syfy kept ordering more SG-1 so they had to change it.
