Ashes to Ashes Series 2

It's interesting that they're starting this off with what looks like a two episode arc with a shady Superintendent, just like Life on Mars' second series.

With the scene that looks like she was being worked on by EMTs... were those supposed to be 21st century uniforms?

The luminous green/yellow? Yeah, that's what they wear now.

I did wondering if perhaps the guy in the hospital at the start is Sam, it did say "prolonged coma" in the paper work Alex was reading at the start of the first series. I can't remember if they said he died or not though.
But after the stalker-y guy showed up, I just started to assume it might be him.

Pretty standard Ashes to Ashes fare.

ie I'm still enjoying Gene, Ray and Chris's moments, but the show is a load of shit flavoured balls.

Really? The Mystery™ isn't doing it for ya? How about a gimmick episode? Apparently they're thinking about doing a 3D episode for series 3...

I think my problem with it is that whatever "mystery" there might have been was destroyed by the parent show. Unless they fuck with the mythology to the point of ruining it, there is no mystery.

That wouldn't be such a bad thing except I find it very difficult to become invested in the events of a television show that occurs almost entirely in the mind of the (irritating) protagonist, and I find it rather jarring that the protagonist, who makes a point of reminding the audience how aware she is of the situation every 5 minutes, seems to fritter between not giving a shit (because it r not realz) and becoming rather invested (oh teh noes, that imaginary woman who I've known for 2 minutes is dead).

I just find it rather difficult to care about anything that happens to these characters now, which isn't helped by the fact that every episode's crime mystery is filled with obvious twists that you can spot a mile away, and some of the dialogue is ridiculous.

Pretty much just watching it for the character moments of the Mancunian trio, which are few and far between.

I hate being negative about a show, I'm sure more than a few people think "there goes Jim Steele again - what a joyless cunt".

that would be cool, and I dont think its totally impossible he could appear in the finale.

Well I liked it, sometimes I come here and think there is something wrong with me for not hating everything that's on.

Good ending with Gene closing the door on Alex, shutting her out of his world.

A Hyde reference with the dancer, which gave her an instant upgrade from Gene.

Did we ever get to the significance of Hyde in LoM?

Well now, this is one of the few things that would have got me to turn on my TV last night, however somehow I got it into my head that it was on tonight. :klingon:

Jeez, Jim, Who, Dwarf, A2A, is there any Brit SF show you do like? If you say Hyperdrive I WILL hit you. Seriously, you should figure out what you like in a show, write it in a pilot script and send it to the BBC Writers Room. I'm not being sarky, if you can create something to a standard you like that isn't going to cost the Earth to produce, you could be on to something.

I do remember reading somwhere they are going to do something different to LoM. And that LoMUS is doing something else as well.

Now if they did a crossover with LoMUS and A2A, that could be interesting...

Jeez, here we go again...

I love Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, and Life on Mars, along with a panoply of other home grown shows. Doesn't mean I have to adore every single episode (or spin off, or long awaited but ultimately shitty revival).

I watch A2A (for Glenister mostly) and I've yet to be impressed. I can't help that.

If you say Hyperdrive I WILL hit you.
Good god no.

Y'know, people have had a go at me for not liking that show too. Apparently, my "rose tinted glasses" for Red Dwarf (a show I've watched on DVD many times over in my adult life) stopped me from liking it - not the fact that it was a steaming pile of rectum.

I'm writing an audio sitcom...

Not really sure how to respond to this, to be honest. I'd never claim, nor do I believe, that I could do a better job than (most) television writers. Does that mean I'm not allowed to criticize their work?

Look, it's not like I come into these threads screaming "it's shit and you all suck". There's a discussion about a show, I throw in my opinion with everyone else and try my best to give my reasons for loving/loathing it. What's wrong with that? Not whining, just genuinely wondering what the deal is here. Am I not allowed to share my thoughts unless they're positive?

He's dead. Committed suicide at the end of LoM and his death was confirmed in Ashes to Ashes' first episode.
Did it? I remember Gene and the gang saying he died in their world, but all I remember about his condition in "the real world" was a form that said "Prolonged Coma."

I can see where you're coming from with the dislike of Drake and her "You're all constructs" shit, it was the main thing I disliked about the series, and her smart arse "It doesn't matter" attitude seemed to last a bit too long. But they seemed to correct that towards the end of last series, and it seems to have stuck this series. Considering the guy who is also from the present is there, it gives a bit more weight to the idea that there's more to this world than "coma dreams".

I enjoyed it, but apart from the fellow time traveler in the surgeon's mask, it was nothing that I haven't seen before, because I knew for certain that the hot stripper was going to get killed and that bushy eyebrowed bloke from V for Vendetta was a bad guy.

YES!!! Thank you!! I've been going nuts about where the bloody hell I'd seen him before!:guffaw:

But, does look intriguing that we have another time traveller in the same era, and he knows she doesn't belong. Wonder how this will pan out?

Well much like series 1 it was fun and eminently watchable without being really brilliant. I like the music, I love Gene Hunt, Chris and the rest, it made me laugh and I adore looking at Keely Hawes...what's not to love.

I do like the idea of another time traveller, I was always very dissapointed that in S1 of LOM the caretaker who took hostages wasn't another time traveller...I dunno some of the things he said seemed to imply it but he wasn't.

Alex seems far less annying this time around. Can they really have enough material for 3 seasons though?

I read some reports suggesting this is the final season, and talk of a 3rd was just for the press, and keep people guessing.

I watched it last night, I enjoyed it. As usual the cast did a great job, but I found the whole dead copper plot of the episode to be decidedly pedestrian.
