The end is nigh...

Another one for the 'hping the spoiler rumour about the cliffhanger isn't true' file - simply because it'd make the concept even more similar to the Master/Cybe finale cliffhanger from the season beore last...

The last teaser looked fairly good, Doctor popping up out of nowhere (again), but are the effects designers for Star Wars, Star Trek, and Doctor Who cribbing each others' notes?

Predictions:

* At least one companion is converted into a Cyberman (again), though this time it's probably to boost their ranks. If not Graham and/or Ryan, then it might be Yaz, since "Cyberwoman" was the pinnacle of early Torchwood classics and all... all three of them - that's real big, right?
* The Doctor gave the Lone Cyberman what it wanted, so expect something big (or lukewarm as it's at the tail end of some Cyberwar)... and also placed at the end of human existence (again)
* The Doctor makes a bunch of jokes so awful that even Tennant and Smith would blush in embarrassment (again) - then again, the teaser already going there with a really bad one
* "Ascension" - might involve mind-altering drugs as metaphor. The term also means to rise up... into the sky with angels harping since this is the end of the great cyberwar (and no previous ones, like the one attempted in the 26th century)... I hope they don't use those stupid Robby Rocketfoot ankle-strapped jetpacks again...
* The sonic magic wand is used and, if for no other reasons, a whole regimen of them will stomp the other way (again). Actually, I predict it will be used 7 times. And how come more college frats aren't turning Doctor Who into a drinking game? One chug every time the thing is whipped out... probably because they'd all go red eye and pass out well within 30 minutes, and no free pizza afterward...
* Doctor Ruth's explanation, assuming she even returns, will be a downer and not because it won't affect existing continuity since "An Unearthly Child" (or a dumb one, meaning she's the Master, who - to top that - is really the Doctor's identical sibling... though given the 13th Doctor tells Doctor Ruth among other things the real Doctor doesn't use weapons and there are plenty of times previous incarnations clearly had done...) - I'd prefer something that isn't a downer, or even Jodie regenerating into Jo and then the script writing team regenerates too - but that won't happen...

The rumour is Yaz is partially converted as a cliffhanger. I hope not - we did that the season before last.

DW was good - thankfully that cliffhanger rumour not true. A bit lacking in surprises, though, and if I'd written or directed it, those drone heads would have landed on people, encased their heads, and converted them from the neck down...
The constant PR of 'game-changing, everything will change' is getting wearing, cos it's always over-hyping.

I'm not sure what to make of this one.

I enjoyed the intensity of the far-future dystopian life of what remained of the human race, on the run from the Cybermen. Splitting up the TARDIS team with the few surviving humans was fun to watch as they tried to figure out how to overcome the Cybermen and reach this fabled Boundary. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised the other side of the Boundary was Gallifrey and The Master but I kind of wish it was something else. My ultimate feelings about that and the overall story is, of course, dependent on how the second part plays out.

Nice to see Ian McElhinney pop up out of nowhere (yet another Game of Thrones alum joining the Whoverse!). I was also pleasantly surprised to see the classic version of the Cybermen appear as the shock troops but, man, I still wish we had gotten to see one of them as part of the ship evolution in "The Doctor Falls."

I honestly have no idea what to make of the Brendan side plot. After his miraculous survival of being shot and falling of the cliff, I thought maybe he was going to regenerate but nope. The final scene as his colleague and father (seemingly unaged) were zapping him with whatever reminded me of the jarring difference the cultures on the different levels of the colony ship in "World Enough and Time"/"The Doctor Falls." Perhaps there's a connection there, but probably not...

That was quite intriguing. No idea how it’s all going to tie together (particularly the Garda Brendan stuff) but I do look forward to finding out. I figured what Ian McElhinney would show them would turn out to be Gallifrey and also expected the Master but didn’t think we’d see him until next week. Now, will we see the Other Doctor too?

As an aside, is the Brendan stuff the first Irish-set Doctor Who story? FWIW, I thought the accents were convincing (not sure where the actors are from) as was the countryside but the buildings definitely didn’t look Irish (no doubt someone will now confirm that the town scenes were filmed in Ireland and make me look even stupider than usual).

"We won't make it back to the Tardis"

Really should've parked it a bit closer then. Might have been better putting the humans in there than cobbling some defenses together out of kitchenware and desk fans.

"Ooh, I wonder what this massive Cyberman warship is full of. Let's have a look in one of these thousands of identical Cyberman sized pods... "

Didn't see that coming !

Still enjoyed it though.

I quite enjoyed tonight's episode. Seeing the state of the human race was pretty shocking after the relentless Cyberman war.

I was kind of presuming the Master will have to show at some point to tell us more about everything that happened, so that wasn't a big surprise. The trailer for next week looks good, though I hope we see more of the earlier'version of the Doctor and we can see just what the deal is there.

Kind of humdrum, with fully-functioning plot armour and too many other contrivances. I don’t recall seeing the screwdriver this episode; maybe it’s on the fritz and unavailable for use as a TARDIS remote (, though the Doctor has even used a key for that purpose on one or two occasions).

Nice to see the show’s narrative visit Ireland, which I think is a first. Not sure what’s up with Brendan. Was half-expecting a TARDIS to save him from that slo-mo plunge, and it’s interesting that he recovered Captain Jack style rather than Time Lord style.

No Jo Martin this week. Perhaps they’re actually keeping her back for the special or 2021. Ah,well.

Six out of ten, I think.

The drones being heads was just plain silly.

And what was Ashad doing to that first Cyberman he reactivated ?

Didn't love it, didn't hate it either. A lot of spectacle and not a huge amount of substance, but good spectacle for all that. I'll give it time to marinate a little.

She was waving it around loads? She also used it to make the grenade

And what was Ashad doing to that first Cyberman he reactivated ?

I wondered that as well!

"I don't need your life story." loved that, though it seems we did need Brendan's life story. That was...intriguing. Is he the timeless child?

The Boundary was a little too reminiscent of Utopia, but on the whole I really enjoyed that. Am slightly worried about the "everything is going to change" bit mind.

Anyone else thinking Graham's going to leave with Julie Graham at the end of next week?

Also 80s Cybermen! Excellent!

Heh. This episode had the opposite effect on me than last week. Last week was boring at first and got good at the end. This week was good at first and got mind-numbingly dull towards the end.

I am still rather interested to see how the Time Lord/Gallifrey storyline turns out, though. More Ruth!Doctor please.

I don't understand this show. Why not just land the Tardis in the colony? Why tell the Doctor Group that they have to hide. THEY HAVE A FUCKING SPACE / TIME MACHINE! Seems like a good place to hide to me.

I wish there was more of a build up to this episode, it just throws you there. I make fun of RTD making no sense at all with the season finales and then redoing anything bad in the last 5 minutes. But I almost rather have that then this. It's just weird.

So the Time Lords have been scooping up the human refugees being sent through and doing something horrible to them while keeping their minds occupied with false realities, that include a Brits stereotypical idea of Ireland?
