Arson attack destroys "priceless" rare costumes

"Tragedy" is a word far too often these days, and granted this story doesn't begin to compare with events such as the earthquake/tsunami in Japan. Maybe it's just because most of my family and friends are involved in costuming in one way or another. However, there is still a tragic nature to the loss of all of these costumes, not to mention the means by which it happened.

Well as a huge movie buff, one can only hope that some costumes can be saved. Sad that someone would do this.

Just think of the impact upon:
- the businesses planning on using those costumes. "Downton Abbey", for example was set to start filming with some within the next couple of weeks, I think
- the loss of history. Some of this was centuries old
- the gentleman who runs this business. He's 76 years old.... and now without livelihood

Horrific. As someone who has worked in archives filled with several stories of paper records as well as important artifacts, the thought of a fire destroying all of it in just a matter of minutes was a terrifying thought. Of course you try to put measures in place to avoid widespread destruction, but if someone is hellbent on lighting the stuff on fire, they will find a way and many important things will be ruined. It's a scary thought!

True enough. "Sad" covers this really succinctly; calling it "tragic" would be ridiculous.

I was kind of struggling to find the appropriate word for it. "Sad" almost seems too weak, but "tragic" seems overkill. It may be a shocking incident, but we do need to keep things in perspective. For me, the loss of history while bad enough isn't so bad as what this has done to the poor gentleman who ran the business.
