Spoilers Arrow - Season 5

5x01...

- Lots of good action for the first time in a long time, or ever.

- Good use of a flashback with the thumb dislocation lesson.

- Ollie is killing again.

- He won't need a wig either for when he gets found on the island.

A parachute arrow? Seriously? How do you pack all that fabric and rigging into an arrowhead?

Tobias Church has potential, a fairly interesting character so far. As for Thea, I'm disappointed that she's hung up her mask, because she really looked sexy in costume.

The episode was directed by the show's stunt coordinator, James Bamford.

- Ollie is killing again.

And the scene where he broke free and apologized to the guy whose neck he broke was an echo of an event from the pilot episode four years ago.

Yeh it was such a stupid scene for sure. How the dam thing would even work like you point out and also does he always carry such an Arrow on him? or did he just guess he might fly out of a helicopter at some point, such piss poor writing. I was expecting him to shoot an Rope type Arrow at the Helicopter so he could control his fall not deploy a fucking parachute.

I caught that and thought it was a great moment to use again. I have a far less of an issue than some when it comes too Ollie killing again as along as it's selective and not all the time (Marvel does this all the time and gets away with it). A show that has characters shoot people with Arrows (Never mind Diggle's guns) and yet doesn't kill has always been pretty silly overall.

He does seem like he has potential to make an interesting enemy but not one who can threaten Arrow. I do have issues when the show has Arrow struggle more than he should against certain villains because he's beaten so many great fighters in the DCEU including Ra's al Ghul. Tobias Church may well be interesting but he is no match for the Green Arrow, I am far more interested in this new Dark Archer character.

You guys are worried about the parachute fitting in an arrowheads? Maybe Cisco reverse engineered Thawnes ring?( see what I did there) Or Holt did the same with some Atom tech. And yes a guy jumping from rooftops would always carry a parachute arrow.

We are all willing to suspend disbelief in comic books or TV in general but there are limits. Even by the normal standards of such a Sci fi fantasy world it was stupid. It reminded me of 60's Batman show where that belt on Batman had everything for every situation.

So on Arrow we have a thug for a hero and on Flash we have an idiot...

Thank Rao for Supergirl. Although I'm concerned, because the quality of the writing on the CW shows is not as strong as it was in Supergirl's first season, and I'm hoping that isn't the result of The CW's execs pushing for more simpleminded writing than CBS's execs were willing to cultivate, or at least targeting a different demographic with different tastes. I hope that Supergirl won't lose its distinctive voice or its quality as a result of its move.

The issue of Diggle's guns has always been a little odd, although I think it's been indicated that he's using some kind of reduced-lethality rounds, like rubber bullets or something. As for arrows, though, they're generally pretty survivable as long as you don't get hit in a vital area. For that matter, the same goes for many types of bullet. As long as it's not a really high-caliber sniper round or a hollow-point bullet designed to fragment and tear up the target's insides, there's only about 1 chance in 5 that a bullet will hit a vital area, and about a 95% chance of surviving if the heart is still beating upon reaching the hospital. TV shows and movies like to portray gunshots as instantly fatal, or at least guaranteed fatal after enough time for a dramatic death scene, but the majority are survivable. I think that in the old days, when guns were less powerful and accurate, the most common cause of death from a gunshot wound was infection setting in afterward.

But there are more ways to pose a threat than just one-on-one physical combat. We saw that already. Church had the same idea as Felicity, that there's strength in numbers and working with a team. He brought all the city's organized crime groups together under his leadership. He's not just some mindless hunk of muscle, he's an intelligent and ruthless strategist. That's how he'll pose a threat.

Not worried, just amused.

The parachute arrow is ridiculous, but I don't go into these shows expecting realism, and it was such a comic booky moment that I didn't mind it.
We got a nice bit of set up for Wild Dog joining the team.
Tobias Church seems like he should be a good villain for the season.
The bit at the end, with who I'm assuming was Prometheus, was interesting.
I'm glad we're finally getting the story of Ollie's time in Russia.
I expected some great action scenes when I saw that stunt coordinator Bam-Bam Bamford directed this one and it did not disappoint.

I read reactions on here before watching the epiosde. The parachute arrow was worse than I was picturing. It just appears, we never really see it uncoil from the arrow tip.

To add to the silliness, here is a guy who always wears a Quiver strapped to his back. It would have made practical sense for him to have a parachute pack hidden build into his Quiver. No need to quickly control it with his hands in an emergency, it's already on his back!

I wonder if it was a Walking Dead reference when Tobias was about to hit someone in the head with a bat.. (I know, no barbed wire)

Not that keen on Green Arrow killing again, but a relapse might prove to be an interesting storyline, they already did raise some interesting points with Thea calling him out for barely overcoming her bloodlust. I wonder what Evelyn Sharp will have to say about that once he recruits her because his speech was what put her off the path of killing last season...

I actually liked the parachute arrow. Yeah, it's not really feasible in real life, but neither are some more mundane things, like the depiction of hacking on this show. And the show is called Arrow, so groddamit I wanna see some trick arrows because that's kinda supposed to be his thing. ;)

The new villains seem interesting, as do the flashbacks, the action was pretty good too, I think he fired more arrows this episode than the latter part of last season combined. So overall I enjoyed this episode and am looking forward to more :techman:

I guess I was one of the few who loved Season Four, so this Season One Redux theme really isn't doing much for me. I barely tolerated Season One :-p I'll always miss seeing Arrow, Spartan, Black Canary, and Red Arrow all fighting an army together. With magic involved.

The premiere was pretty good with some great fight scenes. The flashbacks continue to be utterly uninteresting. I really, really don't care about Ollie going undercover in the Russian Mob. At least last season showed how Ollie learned about magic, even though the story itself was ridiculous padded across the season.

So.... there was not a single mention of Felicity nuking an American city and killing thousands of people. That was a disappointment. I also wish that her little spinal chip thing wasn't 100%, and that she used a wheelchair when she's in Cave but can still awkwardly walk around with a cane.

yeah i was a bit disappointed when she got the chip to counter her spinal injury. I guess on one hand people would say she's an Oracle rip off (for those who're familiar with the Batman character) but on the other how often to we see characters permanently in wheelchair on prime time tv? Only other one I can think of is Paxton on NCIS:New Orleans where the actor is an actual paraplegic.

I'm sure that there are Arrow watchers out there who are in wheelchairs that would like some-one they can sort of identify with for the situation.
