Armie Hammer says WB is looking for older Superman?

Armie Hammer, who was most recently seen as twins in The Social Network, and was once set to play Batman in George Miller's planned but eventually aborted Justice League movie, apparently had his people talk to WB about the possibility of auditioning for Superman in the Zack Snyder/Christopher Nolan reboot set for 2012.

WB got back to Hammer and his people and told him that they are looking for an older Superman, someone between the ages of 35 and 40. Does this mean that other choices, like the fan favorite Jon Hamm for example, are now more of a possibility than previously thought?

Click here for more. So, what do you guys think? Do you think an older, more mature Superman is a good idea? Who could play a 35-40 year-old Superman? Jon Hamm, Jim Caviezel, etc? Let the casting speculation begin.

I'm having trouble seeing how this news jibes with the reported story of Clark Kent travelling the world trying to decide to become Superman. Frankly, it sounds rather redundant. We already have Smallville to give us an indecisive Clark Kent in his 30s who's not Superman yet. ;)

But if we're going for this age range, Jon Hamm.

I would love Jon Hamm as Supes. I think he would be great.

But, then an older Superman seems to conflict with the story that's leaked about Clark traveling the world and trying to figure out who he is.

I guess that could work with an older Supes, but I spent my "wandering, wondering years" in my 20s. So...

Zack Snyder did say at some point that we would be seeing a Superman, with emphasis on "man", which I didn't pay much attention to at the time but I guess that means Snyder wants an older actor in the part?

They made Christian Bale look considerably younger during his flashback sequences in "Batman Begins" so I have no problem with them using a middle aged actor. I know Jon Hamm seems to be the popular choice for the role right now but there was a report from last month that said his name wasn't on a list for the role and far as I know Jon hasn't commented on anything now. I'm sure he's aware of the fan love for him for this part, especially after the excellent Lex Luthor bail out spoof video he did a couple years ago. I think they'll go with an unknown actor.

maybe things have changed since then and now their opting to go with an older clark/superman, which is FINE BY ME! i still would love an established Superman movie though so hopefully they'll scrap the slight origin story and just have it be just another day in Metropolis where something goes awry and the world is in peril at the hands of either Braniac with a little side story going on with Lex leading up to an eventual Darkseid confrontation.

i think with the fairly recent shift of talented directors at the helm of big properties, there could be a string of epic adaptations coming our way. Here's hoping anyways.

Sure why not? Robert Downey Jr has proven that older actors can still be awesome superheroes.

Just another thought I think Arnie would be an interesting young Superman, he was excellent in "The Social Network".

And Nicholas Cage in "Ghost Rider"

I wonder if this revelation meshes with wanting a TV star for Superman.

Here are the points we have so far

-Clark Kent walking around the world

-A potential TV star for Superman

-Jumping head first into the movie. Everyone should know who Lois, Lex and Perry are. No need to re introduce them.

The report was Hamm saying he hadn't been contacted and assumed he was too old for the roll. If they are now looking older for Superman, then Hamm is theoretically back in the running.

Interesting. I've been grousing about the idea of yet another Superman origin story and have been hoping that they would just pick up with an established Superman. I think Hamm would be perfect if that's how they opted to go.

Of course, it could just be that someone was letting Arnie down gently ...

I almost don't want to say (write) Jon Hamm's name, since I don't want to jynx it, but seriously, he's perfect. Just doing a google image search of him, and you get two types pictures: ones where he's in character and as himself. As Don Draper, he's smoldering, confident, intimidating with slicked black hair, enigmatic eyes. Pictures of him in real life(mostly on the red carpet), on the other hand: nervous, awkward smile, floppy hair, glasses. He's already got Clark Kent down pat!

I understand why people love the Jon Hamm idea, but honestly... I just have a really hard time picturing him in the Superman role. He seems either too polished and mature to be flying around in a costume punching supervillains, or (thanks to his appearances on 30 Rock) way too goofy and ridiculous to ever be taken seriously as the character.

I'm sure there's a middle ground there, and that if he was chosen I'd eventually grow to love the idea, but for some reason right now my brain just can't seem to take the idea seriously. lol

George Reeves was an older actor in the Superman TV series of the 1950s so I have no problem with an older actor playing Superman. However, like previous live action versions of Superman, I think they need to go with an unknown actor. It is often difficult to suspend disbelief when we see a well known actor running around in a superhero costume.

^ I think it depends who the actor is. Someone iconic like Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Will Smith, I'd agree with you. Hamm is only really known to viewers of Mad Men (a select minority) and those who've seen him in 30 Rock or the like. To most cinemagoers, he's as little known as a pre-Spider-man Toby Maguire, a pre-Batman Christian Bale.

While I'm generally in favour of unknowns in this sort of role (does anyone think that Burt Reynolds or Robert Redford would have been a better Superman than Chris Reeve?!), the likes of Robert Downey Jr, Ed Norton and Nic Cage have acquitted themselves pretty well in superheroic roles.

I can't say I get all this Jon Hamm love. I really don't see this guy as Superman/Clark Kent.

An older Superman is fine by me in any case, that's the least of my "worries" about this movie.

But aren't the majority of those people you listed unrecognizable when they're in their superhero costume?

^ Well, Norton's 'costume' is a green CGI creature, but we did get to see the Oscar nominee start the 'Hulk-out' process. Downey spends a lot of both IM movies with the mask off. And Cage's face was visible for much of Ghost Rider. Not to mention that they're all much, much more famous and recognisable than Jon Hamm.

Well, never say never so I am sure it is possible that a more well known actor could pull off the Superman role, although if they aren't going to go with Brandon Routh I would personally like to see an unknown.

As far as Jon Hamm is concerned I really don't know him because I don't watch the shows he is in, but looking at the pictures I do think he does have a chance of playing the role.
