Are you teased or bullied for being a Fan?

It is quite ironic, though, that when I was a kid you could have your bedroom plastered with posters, wallpaper etc for a sportsteam like Manchester United (Bye Louis!) and yet doing the same with Sci-Fi stuff was some how seen as' not normal'.

Nowadays I think things are much better. Myeight year old son has a Star Wars themed bedroom and both he and his friends think it's awesome. And they're all on the school football/soccer team together.

I had a large poster of Bela Lugosi in my bedroom for most of my childhood, but then I was always a weird kid.

Funny story: our former next-door neighbors recently confessed to me that they thought I'd never amount to much, since I spent all my time reading science fiction and comic books. :)

Not really, just a little from my immediate family. My parents and younger brothers weren't into sci-fi, and would give me some crap about it, but I really never cared much what my family thought.

I was going to write something snarky, but I should instead post what the snarky actually translates into: Congratulations!

I just think it's incredibly judgmental to make assumptions about somebody's future success in life based on what genres of entertainment they enjoy during their leisure time.

I know. My Mom always bugged me that I should branch out in my reading material, yet she always reads mystery or legal drama novels.

And, yes, in this context, the old neighbors were being gracious and self-deprecating enough to admit that they'd gotten it wrong all those years ago.

Sadly, I did get made fun of or teased. Often from my own family.

Had family member refer to me as a freak, due to my love of Star Trek and sci-fi.

My mother ALWAYS encouraged me to stop reading Star Trek books and try something else. Of course, to this day, more than thirty years later, she has never read any books other than romance novels.

I've never been bullied, I also think on positive thing about the Internet and mobile culture, is that people feel less insecure about being excited by things because they can see other people are too.

My dad was a teacher in a pretty rough school after he got out of the army. Every year on Halloween he wore a starfleet uniform to teach his class. He told me once that he did it the first year for his own enjoyment, and even the kids who didn't watch Star Trek got really into it. They felt more comfortable showing and sharing their own interests. So he kept it up.

This thread is making me feel very grateful for my own family. My mother, to her dying day, could not have told you the difference between STAR TREK and STAR WARS if her life depended on it. (She thought SMALLVILLE was a show about little people . . . really.)

But she never made any efforts to stifle my own individual interests and dutifully drove me to comic-book stores and science fiction conventions and PLANET OF THE APES marathons, just like she drove my various siblings to soccer practice, gymnastics, Girl Scout cookie sales, or whatever. She and my dad didn't care what I read . . . as long as I kept my grades up.

Thanks, Mom.

Never for Star Trek. For other things I like, YES! Ugh.:( I got hated on for liking Taylor Swift and liking Superman!

Thanks, Mom.

My mum was the exact same - she only watched bits of Star Trek as she had a thing for Chekov. Rolled her eyes at every non-Russian ensign aspect of it. Still made me all the uniforms, bought me all the toys, put on a Comms officer dress for my wedding and even tuned in to my reviews on the radio to support me despite hating sci fi :p

My dad was just proud of everything in general. I'm not sure why.... but I gotta raise a glass in their (very seperate!) directions. Don't think I'd have achieved half of what I've done without them encouraging the weird.

Me too. My dad was into Science Fiction. He made a big deal out of going to see Star Wars together in the theater. We went out to dinner, even stayed overnight in a hotel!.

Mom was always encouraging no matter what. As long as our grades were good!

My parents never discouraged me, but I don't think they ever fully understood my love of sci-fi and comic books. They probably still don't.

I like both of them. I catch some friendly flak for Taylor Swift from friends, and I'm the only one who likes Superman over Batman rather than vice versa. But people are dumb about stuff like this. They will make something the coolest thing in the world (like "Ice Ice Baby" or "Achy Breaky Heart", both of which I *still* have on my player and crank up in the car) for a little while, and then suddenly it becomes cool to hate on them instead. Or like with Tay Tay and Supes, they like stuff but want to pretend they don't for some reason. They can say whatever they want, but Taylor Swift is still selling an awful lot of tracks, and Supes is still selling an awful lot of movie tickets and merchandise, and it ain't ALL to just lil ole you and me! ;)

I like what I like, and there ain't no shame in my game.

Don't tell anyone but I suspect my mom had a thing for Captain Kirk. I know she enjoyed Dark Shadows back in the day.

Mom didn't care what I read as long as it was 'clean'. No romance novels which was fine with me as I wouldn't had read them even if I had been free to do so. Lord of the Rings, Narnia, etc. No problem.

Not since I was in middle school, and even then not really. I was teased a ton for other things, being into Star Trek wasn't near the top of the list.
