Are you feeling the scope of the war?

I think this is something I am starting to notice about the show and that while I like it very much it doesn't really feel like a war show with scope of even DS9 as of yet. So much focus on just one character plus some moments with the Klingons makes the war feel almost like the backdrop to her emotional crisis instead of a big horrible thing that is going on in the universe.

I think it hurts that i'm not sure if we have a good understanding of what is going on in the war, other than I guess some spaceships are shooting at each other. I don't know what the objective is in winning it or really what anyone thinks about it other than, war is bad. On "DS9" I think it helped that when you spread the focus around it made the war feel more epic because it effected everyone different. With Bashir you had the Section 31 stuff and Worf allowed us to see how the Klingons thought about it Quark was like the regular civilian always out of the loop and so forth.

Also other than the Klingons have we had any scenes were Burnham wasn't involved? Lorca stops Staments from leaving might have just been the two of them but i'm not sure. Maybe the battle similuation. I don't think Saru has even talked to anyone other than Burnham or TIlly as well. In fact I can't recall much dialogue between any of the characters that didn't have Burnham in it other than the Lorca/Staments scene.

PLus the show has been regulated to standing sets for the most part which is very old school Trek. You had one outdoor location in the pilot with the Desert and that has been it. Even the Federation colony I got to admit looked kind of cheap when we saw the people all together in what was just one room. I just for the love of God hope they don't find a cave set. I've had my fill of Trek caves.

The show is from Burnham's POV. She's a lower decks officer (for now) on an experimental starship which is doing it's own thing to try and win the war.

Sisko was basically in charge of the war effort, leading fleets of hundreds of ships into battle.

- First regular episode they are mentioning a mining accident qand that the Convicts now get to all be replacement miners for the war effort.

- Lorca's ready room status map that shows the current front lines and disposition of Fed and Klingon forces.

- U.S.S. Gelnn was performing maneuvers near the front lines and when they boarded there was a remaining Klingon.

- Most recent episode centers around the fact the Fed's main dilithium production facility Fleet protection was engaged and destroyed and the nearest Fed ship is 80 hours away; and the remainder of the episode is Lorca battle driling his crew and figuring out a way to get the Spore Drive operational to get there within 6 hours. Then they do and manage to take out the attacking Klingon forces.

For 2 regular episodes since the war started - that's IMO a lot of focus on the scope of the war. I mean what's going on? The Klingons are attacking key strategic installations like the Dilithium mine on Corvan II.

It's an experimental ship so it makes sense that Starfleet is keeping Discovery out of the war for the most part. They were only called into help last week because of the Spore Drive. I feel like we've had a good balance of action and character moments. It looks like next week might have a big battle.

I think the action and drama is also being done well but to me it feels more like maybe season 5 of "DS9" were the war hadn't started but you still had conflict between the Federation and Dominion. It doesn't feel like a fight to the death were the Federation is in real danger, at least not as of yet. It would be nice to get a glimpse at what is going on at the front lines. I am hoping the new admiral character and Sarek might be able to sort of be the voice of the war effort and we can maybe get more insight into the big picture. Basically just a little more world building. I also know it is early but "DS9" kind of set the bar high with opening the war with a 6 episode arc were the bad guys literally controlled the space station.

I agree to some extent that the ongoing war feels somewhat sidelined in the last two episodes, because the Discovery isn't really at the frontlines. I don't expect constant battling and fight scenes, but it might have helped if the ship was stationed in the vicinity of some space station where beaten down ships come and go and we would get an inkling of what the fight is like on the front.

There have been more than a few hints that the Federation is currently losing the war. You mentioned worldbuilding, I think the writers need to worldbuild the characters first. The war isn't going anywhere.

I think we've got some good moments like the poor Ensign being ventilated and the death of Georgio as well as the Admiral.

Four episodes and we've seen a lot of suffering.

I think the characters right now are pretty established so I hope we see more war stuff in the next few episodes create more peril and which case you then take it up another notch which will most likely have to do with the spore drive and this alternate universe stuff. I kind of like the idea that when they return to this universe they find that things have even gotten worst and thus putting more pressure on them to find away to win the war.

We know Lorca is captured and I doubt that he'll be rescued in the same episode. I think the rescue mission will be launched next episode but it will play out over a couple of episodes.

Well that would be similar to what DS9 did in season 5 when they had Bashir,WOrf,Garak and Martock locked up in a Dominion prision for two episodes. Also I'm pretty sure we saw him eating what looked like Klingon food in his ready room, maybe it's like the manchurian candidate. Probably not, but it's fun to speculate
