Are you depressed over bad reviews or simply don't give a F--?!

Some of the "review" titles:

Boldly Going Psychotic

This isn't Star Trek - this is Star Wars with Star Trek characters

Two Hours of Hack Writing and Lens Flares

Look Yoko Ono has her own ship now to ruin everything

Horror. War. Racism. Desecration of the Corpse of Gene Roddenberry. (Also: cheap CGI, dull story, lame acting)

When Federation turns evil

the discovery of total trash

When being PC is more important than actually being creative

Nothing short of treason

Star Trek is officially declared as clinical dead

Welcome to the USS lensflare! Someone needs to get fired for this!

CBS is Pimps

Thank you for killing my hope of being able to relive my childhood

Not Star Trek...All Universe Social Justice League Steals A Brand

Political correctness at absurdum

THIS is what you people have been depressed over?

I know, they are wonderfully mad - but also some very horrible views in there. The 'Yoko Ono' line is racist, and also comes form that place of knowing nothing about Ono's work anyway; the Social Justice and Politcal correctness jabs too. Yes old Trek is fundamentally conservative, compared to today and also because it was a product of Hollywood, which is generally conservative in its outputs (if not its makers).

But yet, what were these people watching when younger? Oh yes, mainly white men and elite American culture on screen - I think from a progressive standpoint we tend to attach more liberalism or socialism to Trek than it actually had. It really wasn't that liberal, not compared to the idea of Trek we inherit (usually charged with the addition of GR's Star Trek... which feels quite fundamentalist :D ).

But this is what is great about Discovery, trying to step away from that to an extent (admittedly, still to a limited extent). But it still ruptures utterly the paradigm of older Trek - which is good, because, I would argue, older Trek was and is conservative - and it's nice to move away from that.

Right wing trek fans boggle my mind. They love a show with socialist, liberal ideals, but Janeway is the worst captain because she has girl germs and heaven forbid there is a gay character. Their favorite seasons of Star Trek are season 6 and 7 of deep space nine because of the dominion war which features constantly in the fanfiction that they write about the USS Marysue, a supership class starship that has fighter jets and 54 torpedo launchers.

Can a moderator change the word 'simple' to 'simply' in the topic title..?? Typed too fast... thanks!

I was slightly overwhelmed when I first clicked on the comments threads on this forum for the first two episodes. Then I kind of smiled, and remembered how it's always been a feverish mess of strange hostility since the days of VOY and ENT on here. I just like and reply to the comments that I agree with, and post my own.

Everyone is different, so an opinion is just a personal thing. If you're enjoying something, that's all that matters.

I do have to agree with some of the comments about some of the horrible, racist, misogynistic fans over the years, that always make me wonder if they've been watching the same output that I have all this time.

Since critics are paying neither my CBS All-Access nor my Internet bill, I don't give two shits what they think. Right now? Discovery hasn't clicked for me. Who knows what the future holds?

If it were any good it would depress me. But it's not any good. Our supposed hero is a mustache twirling villain with no real good motives and our villains are mustache twirling villains with more sympathetic motives.

Wait, I don't understand this - who is twirling their moustaches, and how?

86% @ Rotten Tomatoes, 7.2 @ IMDB. What bad reviews?

86 % are only the professional critics though. The audience score is 59 %.

And 7.2 on IMDb is actually not particular good. The other Star Trek series are rated higher.

TOS: 8.4
TAS: 7.6
TNG: 8.6
DS9: 7.9
VOY: 7.7
ENT: 7.5

That said it is still early. Only two episodes of DIS have aired so far. The ratings might still change, especially as we haven't even seen most of the main characters yet or the Discovery itself. It was all only a prelude so far.

The only opinion that's important is mine. LOL

And reviewers are full of shit anyway, and half of us think the other half is full blown crazy. Same as the last time.
This. I never pay attention to reviews. I make up my own mind

Let’s be honest here for a second. How many IMDB users are automatically rating the series abysmally low because it’s not the Star Trek THEY want? At this moment, because there is such a division in Trek fans, I think it’s little unfair to utilize sources like IMDB and RT’s audience scores when it’s easy to spoof ratings and for some odd reason, there are people who genuinely want the show to fail.

I mean, it’s far from perfect. But I don’t think it deserves a 1.0 rating on IMDB. Can anyone here honestly suggest it does?

People hate Iron Fist but I love it more than Daredevil or Luke Cage. I actually like Discovery. My favorite reviewers had nothing but positive things to say about it. I don't care what the fans think. They liked the God Awful JJabramprise nonsense. They also seem to like the Orville which is dull. So yeah I don't care. Live long and prosper STD.

A better way to track STD. Check the torrent numbers (since CBS isn't going to give us their internal numbers). You don't download shows you hate.

As far as Rotten Tomatoes goes, I'm not sure. The various Abrams films have survived disgruntled fans and scored fairly well.

It is still way too early to call Discovery, but if the scores continue to be mediocre, it may be an actual reflection of what many people think of the series.

Probably not fair for me to lump RT in there. And I’d probably rate the first two episodes at about a 65% so I find that number reasonable. My commentary on IMDB scores stands though.
