Are you a Star Trek fan?

That is because, as far as I know, I was the one who coined the term Trekkist.

So far as recent history, perhaps, but I remember a TV Guide article from the 70s in which the Trekkie/Trekker was being discussed and in a follow-up letter column, someone wrote something like, "whether they prefer Trekkie or Trekker, I think we can agree that they are all Trekkists".

Was that you? :)

Could be.. I am very old.

ee-up. I try to catch everything Trek but life sometimes has other plans. I don't feel like a lesser fan if that happens. I catch up sooner than later.

What's this "Star Trek" you speak of?
Seriously though, I'm a fan of it all, but when it was announced that JJ Abrams was remaking TOS, Trek died to me. Nothing left for me to enjoy in Trek but go to conventions and reflect on the past 40 years.

Oh yeah--JJ Abrams has me seriously worried! I'm not a huge fan of Trek movies, though.

I love 4 of the 5 series, and I read a lot of Trek novels in the 1980s and the first half of the 1990s. Watched TOS in syndication in the 70s as a preteen/teen, watched TNG and ENT all the way through their first run on t.v., watched Voyager on dvd, and I intend to catch up on DS9 sometime, maybe next year when I've exhausted all other Trek.

Trek's important to me, it helped shape my world view. I love the stuff.

I'm a Trekster. A uniquely special group of fans who love all forms of Star Trek and spend ridiculous amounts of time discussing what was really good in each episode and what was vile, horrible, and heinous in each episode. This pursuit consumes a large part of our lives, but we find it very pleasurable.

I've never heard of 'Trekkist' as a third definition. As 'ist' is often a suffix for an ideology or a religion; I would have guessed it means someone who takes the franchise even more seriously than Trekkies; to the point it becomes a doctrine to abide by.

You mean, like a psychiatrist, a botanist, a pianist, a linguist, a colonist, a tourist... ;)

Yes, I am a Star Trek fan. Having acquired all of ST on DVD over many years (searching for used deals with an enthusiasm that would make a Ferengai proud), I can say I am a fan of all the series and the movies. When I get burned out on one series I take a break and go to another. The movies I probably lean more toward TOS cast, but yup, it's all good.

And express your irrational fear and hatred of a film that won't be out until May.

It's the same as someone who either likes rock'n'roll, classic rock, '80s rock, or modern rock, you don't have to like all four to like rock.
This sums it up nicely IMO.

I agree.

I don't think you have to like everything to be a fan. I don't even think you have to have watched all the Trek shows to be a fan.

Although I do wish that people who haven't really watched a show would just admit it, rather than faking their way through with bogus comments about a show they've never seen, or seen very little of.

Those people are alot more annoying than those who just admit they haven't seen show X or Y...and prefix their remarks about the franchise in general with that disclaimer.

Irrational? I don't think so.

Star Trek hasn't died for me because of work that I haven't liked or my cynicism of the next movie. Heck, here I am still talking about a show (TOS) the likes of which will likely not be seen again, at least not as Trek.

For me my interest stays alight through pursuing Trek related projects and associating with like minded people.

If you like at least one episode or movie, then you can call yourself a Star Trek fan. However, like with other franchises, you'll usually have to clarify your particular interests to various people. For example, I call myself a TMNT fan, but I specifically like the 80s/90s TV show and the four movies. That's not to say that I would hate the comics or other TV shows, but I haven't cared to seek them out.

In a situation such as the one in the first post, I would give a qualified answer up front. Instead of just saying "Yes," I would say "I like X."

Then you're the only one.

The only one not desperate enough for more Trek that I'll swallow anything Abrams says or does.

Yeah. Keep tellling yourself that.
