Are you a purist?

I like TOS, warts and all.

I like TAS, too, big warts and all.

I didn't really like the movies, particularly as I got older. I didn't like TNG although there were a few good episodes.

So I like my Trek from 1966-1979. I like the fandom of the 70s, the cons, the Trek Magazine, the fan fic, the early Star Fleet Battles, the speculation...

Once the movies and TNG colored everything, the community didn't feel like the TOS community any more. I'd play SFB with people and they'd discuss "warp cores".

I guess I'm a purist. I started TBBS in this forum and hopefully will get my 16000th post in here, too. I'm glad there is a place I can discuss Trek without having to shoehorn in the Borg or Archer. :)

As far as I can discern the meaning here of "purist," I'd answer the question "no." If I only liked TOS, I would by now either be bored to death with all things Trek (those 79 episodes over and over and over and over and over and over...aaaaiiiiieeeeeeeeee!) or I would have become one of those...disquieting people who apparently have no life outside of Trek - who know more about Trek than anybody should know about any TV show, no matter how worthwhile.

But as it happens, I've liked almost all the various incarnations of Trek, and it's been great. Everybody is entitled to his own opinion, but as far as I can tell, anybody who hasn't found anything worthwhile - anything Trek worthy - in TNG, DS9, VOY...well, all I can say is, you've missed some fabulous scifi. Some fabulous entertainment, period. I feel about you almost the same as I feel about those people who say they can't stand scifi and have never watched Star Trek. Why not?

I can understand liking TOS best, but no matter how hard I try, I cannot imagine finding nothing Trek worthy in its successors. There is some great stuff there - episodes at least as good as the best of TOS (along with episodes as bad as the worst of TOS ;) ).

There are some excellent points here, that the "purists" are conveniently ignoring ;)

I like Star Trek and have since the beginning in 1965. Are there some incarnations that I have liked better than others? Absolutely.

Here are my preferences.

TOS
TNG
DS9
TAS - The Animated Series for the unenlightened.
VOY - I still think Cmdr Shelby would have been a better captain.
ENT - The Temporal Cold War killed this series for me. It could have been tons better.

I've always taken purist to mean TOS only. No films or TNG onwards. I seem to recall a British comedian denying the existence of even the 3 (at that time) films. Choosing to swear by just 79 episodes instead.

Me? Not really. Hell, I loved ENT from day one and still watch it now, back-to-back with TOS Remastered.

When your opinion differs from whatever's currently popular, it's amazing how many labels you'll collect.
No kidding! and no I don't consider myself a ''PURIST''

Hmmm... just saw of the front page of Trek Today: "As reported by news-journalonline.com, most Star Trek made after the original series didn't have anything to offer for the man who made Spock famous. "

Does that make Nimoy a purist because, like some of us, he found the subsequent series had nothing to offer him ?

This kind of attitude tends to bother me. Why can't Archer or TNG be brought up in this forum?

They can be, of course, and are.

Agreed. The occasional mention won't break the forum. ;)

For the most part, discussion on more than one Trek show should go in GTD. But every now and then, someone wants to talk about another show in comparison only to TOS and would prefer to address only the TOS forum denizens.
