Alas, I really wanted this PURSE for Christmas, but did not get it. And, as I'm on work furlough ( the office is shut until Jan. 10), I can't really justify spending more than I already have.

Alas, I really wanted this PURSE for Christmas, but did not get it. And, as I'm on work furlough ( the office is shut until Jan. 10), I can't really justify spending more than I already have.
I always carry a Coach purse. I love them. They cost a pretty penny but one of the good leather ones, if taken care of, will last forever!

So I would say over here we don't have the same kind of problems you're having keeping your stuff together.
The top one I would call a handbag (or more correctly a shoulder bag)
The bottom one I would call a wallet
I would call this one a purse (more correctly coin purse)
and I would call this a purse as well (its a combination of a wallet and a coin purse)
but it's so cute and summery looking! maybe it will become a mood enhancer. that would make it almost pharmaceutical in it's function, no? def worth the moolah then!

Yes, we would call that a coin purse in the US, too.
But purse by itself is interchangeable w/ handbag (or shoulder bag) or pocketbook. The latter, of course, can also mean a small paperback book. Just to make things more confusing.
Serial thread killer, Brighton (http://www.brighton.com) makes really nice quality purses-of-all-definitions. I don't think they have retail stores in the UK, but the website has links to a couple on-line merchants who sell them.
