Architecture fans, discuss the World Trade Center replacement building

I must say, as a wannabe architect, I am not a fan of the Freedom Tower design. The original WTC plan, two 110-story pylons, had a certain flair all their own. I was of the opinion that they should have rebuilt them, as they appeared on the outside, but with a few internal redesigns (such as dedicated concrete-encased stairwells in the four corners, as well as modern modular updating). Maybe even up them to, say 135-140 stories or so (granted, no match for, say, the Burj Dubai, but...).

I was wondering how other fans of skyscrapers felt about the Freedom Tower, and what they would have liked to see rise up in place of the old WTC.

In addition, feel free to post links to your favorite architecture sites showing tall buildings, big bridges, information and specifications, etc.

Here's my personal favorite. This guy's been the length and breadth of the Mississippi, and working his way down the Missiouri, taking pictures of bridges and listing information.

I'm also still of the belief that they should have been rebuilt as they appeared... perhaps with some stairwells in a couple corners. The current redesign plan is beyond pathetic. The Freedom Tower (now 1 World Trade Center) could have just as easily been conceived by a 12 year-old and a government bureaucrat. It's an uninspired design and the car bomb proof lower section is completely absurd.

I don't hate it, but it looks kind of awkward to me; I wonder what it will be like in the rooms at the corners of the triangles. I definitely think there should be twin towers.

Re: Architecture fans, discuss the World Trade Center replacement buil

I like it, I'm all about modern design building going up there. The twin towers weren't the greatest looking buildings. So ya, bring on the new shiny stuff.

If they ever get to building that is...

Re: Architecture fans, discuss the World Trade Center replacement buil

Haven't they already begun?

Re: Architecture fans, discuss the World Trade Center replacement buil

I preferred the Liebeskind plan - the current design is not the most imaginitive set of buildings and I always think architecture should keep moving forwards.

Re: Architecture fans, discuss the World Trade Center replacement buil

It's pretty dull, if you ask me. There are far, far more interesting skyscrapers out there.

I also share the concern that the base of the tower is pretty terrible. From what I've seen of it, it doesn't look like it will integrate terribly well with the street, which is unfortunate.

Re: Architecture fans, discuss the World Trade Center replacement buil

I'm by no means an architecture fan but I'm disappointed that we're only putting one tower in place of the twin towers. Personally, I think they should have put up four towers as a message to potential terrorists: For every tower you take down, we'll build two more.

Re: Architecture fans, discuss the World Trade Center replacement buil

Do you have a picture of the accepted Wold Trace Center design, so I can judge for myself?

Re: Architecture fans, discuss the World Trade Center replacement buil

I like it. Looks like it's from Coruscant or something.

Re: Architecture fans, discuss the World Trade Center replacement buil

The Freedom Tower is crap! They should rebuild the WTC as a slap in the face to binn laden. It will show him we can rebuild what he knocks down.

Re: Architecture fans, discuss the World Trade Center replacement buil

It's alright, I don't get the people who would want it to be rebuilt the way it was. Though now we have an emotional sort of wistful affection for those buildings, they were not beautiful, just giant glass covered gray square shafts. The new design actually has outward architectural details that seem pleasing to the eye.

Re: Architecture fans, discuss the World Trade Center replacement buil

I agree. And I can think of no better tribute to those who died in the Towers that day than to rebuild, bigger, stronger, taller, more modern, yet still keeping much the same look that made it an icon. Lower Manhattan just doesn't look the same without those two massive pylons looming over it.

Not to go off-topic too much here, but I don't foresee another jets-in-the-towers attack, where hijackers seize the aircraft...I think if anyone tried, (1) Air Marshals will put them down, or (2) the passengers will do as they did on Flight 93 and rise up against the hijackers, preferring to die storming the threat and the 'jackers put them into the dirt, than to end up in a skyscraper or national monument. All of the fear of risking more attacks by rebuilding identical replacements to the original towers is, IMHO, for naught. So there is nothing to be lost by rebuilding new towers right on those hallowed grounds. And everything to gain.

And that's exactly how everyone felt when they opened up in the mid-70s, that they were ugly and soulless. But they ultimately gained the affection and symbolism of New York and became irreplacable parts of the skyline. The new buildings just don't have the same pizzazz. And if you ask New Yorkers, they had the emotional wistful affection for the old WTC before they fell.

On a side note, I think an excellent view of the New York skyline could be gained from that 30 Hudson Street 780-foot building in Jersey City.

Well, both sidious and myself like the new design and I already commented how the old building were kinda ugly of you really looked at them.

Sights to be seen? Absolutely! But still kinda ugly.
