Apple Mac's worst kept secret finally revealed

I'm an avid mac user and have a 32gb touch, Macbook, 2 minis and have had others in the past. So yeah, I've drank the koolaide but so far my thirst isn't there this time.

It is missing some key parts for me - primarily a USB or firewire connection to hook up an external drive without going through another computer. Even at it's largest 64gb configuration, it is too small for heavy use on the road. Likewise the USB is needed to print anything with needing to piggyback on another computer. I also have not been able to locate an audio out (ie headphone jack).

Not important to me but others are also asking why no camera or mic for video conferencing or VOIP.

I'm guessing that there will be third party accessories coming that will take care of these issues. But there should not have been such issues to start with. Apple has a habit of purposely crippling some functions, this time I feel they went too far.

It will mature and the price is very good. The unlimited 3G data deal is excellent at $29/month with no contract ($15/month for 5GB limit). Yes, it is only with AT&T but I would not be surprised to see others matching it. The masses owe Apple a big thank you for slapping down the cell companies high prices.

That may be the biggest part of the whole announcement.

Dear God, they went with the "iPad" name. As so many on the MacRumors forum pointed out, it sounds like an Apple-branded feminine hygiene product.

All those people are obviously incredibly immature.

True. The same thing happened with Nintendos Wii. No one like the name now its not an issue.

Im not sure about this product. I guess it works for someone who weants to surf the net on the go wihtout the heft of a laptop and tiny screen of smartphone.

Not a product im interested in but Im sure there will be many that like it.

I am really looking forward to this. I will have the funds set aside soon. I'll be getting the 32Gb version, with G3, I think.

Mac raises the bar every time. That's why they rock!

The battery on my Blackberry lasts 5.5 days.

How long does the battery on an iPhone last for...?

Continuous usage or standby? Because if your Blackberry can access cellular internet, or play video or music, for five and a half days straight, I'll be more than impressed, I'll accuse it of witchcraft.

Blackberries are always connected to the internet....but no, you can't play music or video for 5.5 days straight on them..my newest Blackberry needs a charge every 12hrs or so.

RAMA

So Apple took a laptop, neutered it in every way possible, gave it one of their "cool" "i"-names, and then decided to charge $500 for it.

And the sad thing is? People will lap this up like it's the best thing ever.

Exactly. Give me one reason why I shouldn't buy a netbook for $400, instead. They can do everything the iPad can (and many things it can't, like play Flash-based apps), and do most of it better. I'm just not sure what market Apple is trying to tap into here.

Hell, just take that $400-$500 and buy a cheap laptop that are on sale every week at BestBuy. Sure, it won't play Doomquake XXVII - Ultima! But it'll surf the web and display the Flash that 90% of the websites on the planet use!

I turn it on at around 6.30am, and turn it off at 10pm. I check emails, surf the net, etc. It lasts 5 days.

I'm an Apple fan here, and I am not impressed. I don't quite understand who this product is supposed to be marketed at. I already have an iPhone (love it) and a MacBook Pro (also love it). Why would I need an iPad? If people want an ultra-portable device to look at email, watch video, listen to music, etc. then there's the iPhone or iPod Touch. If people want a portable computer, get a laptop. What exactly does this tablet device offer? For $500 most average consumers can buy an entire Windows-based PC.

All I can say is, my iPod Touch is too small. It was too small the day I bought it. I have always wanted a big iPod Touch. It arrives in 60 days. I am totally stoked!

Why light your money on fire when you can buy this sexy device that will play a video of benjamins ablaze on it's awesome LCD screen?

To the people saying they like it because it's like a bigger iPod Touch: why would you want your iPod Touch to be bigger at all? Maybe I don't use it for the same things as you, but I bring my iPod Touch in the car and to the gym. The last thing I want is for it to be larger!

MLB at bat?
viewing pics of my grandkids?
reading the news?

I've always felt my iPod Touch was too small. I have operas on it... ripped DVDs of operas, and I have to connect it to my laptop at work to watch them. I can watch them on the bus, but I have to hold it really close to my face. I have other ripped music DVDs, too, like The Concert for George.

I want an iPad today! I can't wait 30 days!!! :scream:

I guess I have never used my iPod Touch for such things. I watch occasional movies on it at the gym, and the size is just fine.

For me, the big advantage of an iPod Touch (and similar devices) is the portability, something that's lost with this awkward, bulky device.

Exactly. Why not just carry around a laptop?

Because a laptop forces me to flip open the bulky keyboard for all the things I do that don't require keyboard input.

The screen on my iPod Touch is too tiny for my 50-year-old eyes to look at for long stretches. The iPad sounds like exactly the compromise I'm looking for, between an iPod and a laptop. I can't wait to have one.

Usually, when people are talking about battery life and give a timeframe, they don't say a timeframe that includes turning it off for 8 hours at a time.

This. A laptop is heavy and cumbersome. It also requires a power cable and a dedicated bag. Add a mouse and/or a base fan to avoid the heat the thing gives off and I detest carrying one anywhere. The iPad looks rather ergonomic and simple. Like the Kindle, I would be able to carry it just about anywhere or toss it in a bag with other items.
