Anyone worked in Antarctica?

Anyway, has anyone here ever worked in Antarctica or just traveled down there?

No.

My advice: when the penguins start to look attractive, you've probably been there too long. When they start talking to you, you've definitely been there too long.

Penguins are cute.

I was there twice on a Coast Guard icebreaker -- each time for about 8-9 weeks.
Same one that's in your avatar?

Actually, no... that's the CGC Healy, which nominally does Arctic research patrols only.

Although she has been down to Antarctica once, she's billed as "a research vessel with polar icebreaking capabilities" ('only' 30,000 HP).

The ship I was on (the CGC Polar Star), with 75,000 HP, is labeled as a 'heavy icebreaker with significant research capabilities'.

Gotta love bureaucracies!!

^^ If your diet consisted mainly of raw whole fish, you’d probably smell pretty gross too.

I know some people who went to Antarctica recently as tourists. It was a cruise, but they got to set foot on the coast for a bit.

I'd like to go someday, just to say that I've been there.
