Anyone Think That Patrict Stewart Was Overrated As An Actor?

Without Stewart the Picard character would go down in history as Trek's worst captain. Picard as a character isn't all that compelling because he doesn't have the depth of Sisko or Cowboy image of Kirk or the sexy bi-polar qualities of Janeway. Stewart alone made the character watchable.

He had more gravitas than any of the other captains. He gave the impression he could quell rebellion with a glare, whereas the others would have to back it up with speech.

Indeed, that's exactly what happened with Jonathan Archer. A Picard wannabe played by an actor without a fraction of the gravitas.

Are you kidding? Picard was the king of making speeches! Just ask Q.

William Adama is the sort of commander who could quell rebellion with a glare. Picard would be excusing himself to his Ready Room if Adama gave him "The Look".

I think he's afforded a certain degree of credibility simply because his voice is, to most on this side of the pond, so compellingly and distinctly aristocratic British—something by which many Americans seem unconsciously (and, often, unduly) impressed.

That said, he convinces me utterly as Picard, and I've never seen him give an appreciably poor performance.

In short, I think he's a fine actor, but one can make a decent case for asserting he's overrated.
