Anyone Smoke?

Smoking is very unsexy. I dated two girls who smoked, that's it. I admit they were very accomodating about not smoking around me but of course I could still tell. I also found a few interesting ways to keep them from smoking.

RAMA

I just had a smoke. It was wonderful. I'll give it up soon.

Ditto. Been working through the remains of this pack I had lying around for a month at the rate of about one per day. Although I smoke only half a cig each time. They're these additive-free, super-strong American Spirits that give me such a nice buzz. Perfect with the afternoon coffee.

I smoked exactly once in my life, in 1987. After getting violently ill, I decided never to do it again and haven't. It's just as well too, since I have enough health problems to worry about.

I started smoking around 3 years ago. I was one of those guys who "quit" multiple times only to pick it back up a few days later.

Last June I puffed my last cigarette and never bought another pack. Sure I still get the urges, but the thought of breathing clear and not smelling bad usually outweigh the nicotine urges I get every now and then.

Unfortunately I don't have any advice on how to quit. It wasn't something that I planned to do, it just happened. Mostly out of necessity, as I was no longer able to sustain my habit and also pay rent.

I tried a cigar once, didn't care for it, so I never took it up.

If someone else wants to smoke, I got no problem with it.

I don't care if people smoke. Just do it away from me. One of the best things to ever happen around here was the law being passed that prevents people from smoking indoors. I was so happy the first time I went out to a bar and didn't come home stinking of smoke!

Yes, I've smoked since I was 15 years old. I came up with some reasons for quitting however they don't yet apply. I do maintain that I will quit when they do apply because it's a silly habit.

What reasons are those? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

1) If I have children
2) If it directly starts to affect my health - as in if I continue smoking it will be the end
2a) If I find myself with a health problem that could be exasperated by smoking
3) If I find myself unable to afford the habit

I know I'm addicted to nicotine, I also know that the enjoyment of smoking is a false sensation that is connected to the addiction to nicotine. Like another poster said, we all do stupid unhealthy shit.

I loved smoking but quit because I got pregnant. I don't miss it now ( a kajillion years alter) but quitting was hard - something I had to try several times. cold turkey finally worked best for me.

I don't have very strong opinions on who should or should not smoke, but I wish good luck to anyone trying to quit.

It sounds like you've made up your mind, StarMan. I hope you're successful.

Actually, I don't think so many people smoke around here. Of my circle of acquaintances, I'd say that the vast majority don't smoke, a few are very light smokers (3-5 cigarettes a day), and only a marginal fraction are heavy smokers.

According to wiki, 21% of all U.S. adults are cigarette smokers. Compared to UK (22%), Germany (23%), Italy (26%) and France (31%), it's not that much of a difference.

I noticed that in the States unlike Europe, where pretty much everyone smokes...

I always find mentions of this interesting. Why do you suppose it's so?

OK, well I only had France and Serbia to go on in my estimates. A third as opposed to a fifth of the populace is a significant difference. In Serbia, nearly half the people smoke. I figure in Serbia, it's so prevalent 'cause it's dirt cheap. And likely of a far lesser quality, and laced with some super-addictive shit additives. In France, I assume it goes hand in hand with how much weed they all smoke.

In the case of Serbia I'd say that, just like many Slavic countries, the message about exactly how bad it is for your health didn't have the time to be as effective as it was in Western Europe. It being dirty cheap is also an issue, I agree.

As for France, a third opposed to a fifth is indeed a significant difference. But it's hardly "pretty much everybody". Not sure if serious about the weed comment.

Looking at what I originally said, and Dennis snipped..

I noticed that in the States unlike Europe, where pretty much everyone smokes, smoking nearly always places one in the bottom tier of the economic ladder, which makes it all the less attractive.

..it looks like I meant that in Europe anyone is likely to smoke regardless of economic standing. Indeed, I found some studies that attribute the difference between the States and Europe to the fact that rich Americans are less likely to be smokers.

I see. Looking at Dennis's quote, it seemed to me you were saying that smoking was extraordinarily popular in Europe, which I found strange, since it was not my experience at all. Sorry if I misunderstood you.
