Hadrian, Gregory, Alexander. All good names.
Pope Francis I? Encouraging.
can someone explain the significance of Francis to this former heathen?

I thought Assisi as well, until my co-worker, a former seminarian suggested that it was most likely Xavier. I was rooting for Timothy Dolan, only because I met him a few years ago when he was still an Arch Bishop. Hilarious guy.Francis of Assisi was obviously the first one that came to my mind, too, but I just saw that the guy's a Jesuit, so he could also be thinking of Saint Francis Xavier.
So if we don't know who why is it a good start? I guess if it was a Saint with a unique name a distinction for good or bad can be madeI thought Assisi as well, until my co-worker, a former seminarian suggested that it was most likely Xavier. ....Francis of Assisi was obviously the first one that came to my mind, too, but I just saw that the guy's a Jesuit, so he could also be thinking of Saint Francis Xavier.
You understood correctly. His choice of name is a good start!
Gay marriage is a "machination of the Father of Lies." Adoption by gay people is discrimination against children. Words of wisdom from the new Pope who distanced himself from the liberation theology movement (the priests and nuns who actively opposed dictators and took risks for social justice). The woman president of Argentina said the Catholic Church under his leadership in the country was reminiscent of "medieval times and the inquisition."

A Catholic analyst just said it's possible the new Pope had both men named Francis in mind when he picked his name.

That's about all that sounds good so far, though...

Sounds like a prick to me.
