Seriously though nearly every author and director changes mythology to suit the story depending on what's needed, spirits are a very grey area of myth anyway and are vastly different from one country to another. So really just go with whatever works best for the novel/series.

But I agree. Endymion, my only thought after reading your post was, "How about sage?" But that's not quite right for your story. You should come up with your own protective charm or ancient artifact. It might be better than something from a real world legend in this case.
