Anyone know much about the occult?

I need some help. This can be real-real, or Michael Crichton-real. I'm writing this thing where a cult is kidnapping women and possessing them with evil spirits. There has to be something in the environment or in their houses that either the women are using for protection, or the members of this cult are using to their advantage. I'm having trouble figuring out what that something is. Right now, I've got nearby copper mines. Copper is one of the seven metals of alchemy, and generally thought to channel positive energy. The way I'm working things right now, the women knew they were targets, and were living near abandoned copper mines as a sort of shield from the cult members looking for them. It works, but I feel like there's probably something better I could use. Anyone know of anything I might be able to research a bit?

The women could pour a circle of salt around their homes. I saw something similar to that in a movie once. Not sure how "factual" it is though.

^Actually, salt is the most pure mineral in the Occult-Wiccan world. It is used to "ground" negative energy from objects, places, even people.

@Endymion: As for what your women could use to protect themselves with, the best thing for them to use would be voodoo gris-gris. They are small pieces of fabric sewn together to form little bags that hold protective herbs and stones. They are worn or carried everywhere on the bearers' person to ward off evil at all times. Hope this helps with your endeavor.

Hmm, my classmate's aunt is into some form of voodoo. Black magic anyhow. I'm. Ot certain of the specifics.

I can ask her a for a few ideas if voodoo is what youre aiming at.

Rather than using the dubious protection of a nearby copper mine or an easily dispersed circle of salt, they should put the salt in the walls of their house and wear clothes embedded with copper wire. This would offer much more reliable protection.

It's a little known fact that Arthur Fiedler used to wear suits lined with copper wire. That's what made him such a great conductor.

I'm shocked at the use of such elementary puns.

Fuck that, just use guns.

Kind of useless when spirits are not solid.

Silver bullet?

Depends on what franchise/mythology. Mostly just lycanthropes, in some cases vampires. Iron/steel for the Fae and copper for some monsters. For spirits most stories just have spells/magic or something like an exorcism, or like in Supernatural burning the corpse it belongs to, or in Buffy destroying the talisman that brought it into this world.
