Anyone know how to engage/find other Star Trek fans?

(apologies if the formatting on this post is bad i’ve never used this website and the layout is rather old)
Does anyone know how to find other Star Trek fans irl, i’m a young fan (mid to older Gen Z) and I have no one to geek out about Star Trek with. I’ve scoured social media (Insta, TikTok, Tumblr etc) and there’s barely anything (I don’t use Twitter and Reddit is good but quite antisocial). The only irl comic shops or anything of the like are 45 minutes away (i’m from the UK so Star Trek isn’t as popular here anyway). :/
Also quite annoyed because I feel like anyone that is a Star Trek or sci-fi/space opera fan in general wouldn’t talk to me about it because they assume I wouldn’t be into it. I told a guy in my physics class that I like Star Trek, and other nerdy ish fandoms and that I like going to comic-con and he was shocked saying he’d never expect it like i was too girly/basic or some shit etc etc and I wish I looked more like a fan (idk how that’s even possible but whatever) because maybe I’d be able to find another.
Long winded way of saying any way to find Star Trek fans irl or online please tell me because I am in NEED of geeking out over this show (preferably a lower age range because a lot of fans are older and while that’s great and I love discussions with older fans sometimes I also want to be silly and unserious in my geeking out over this franchise (specifically TOS and the movies))?
Oh also if anyone has any book recs please share (the audiobooks on spotify are not enough) or if you are willing to explain how to use the website

If interested in the history of the original series, Inside Star Trek by Herb Solow and Robert Justman is a great read. I’d also recommend the Fact Trek website, ran by two former members of this board.

@Annie McCoy So what drew you in? Which show or movie?

I started with AOS, like 2 years after beyond came out because I was having a phase with one of the actors that happened to be in it. Then when discovery was coming out I watched some of that. I had a Latin teacher that I adored and he was super into Star Trek to the point he would include it in our translation exercises and use the politics of the show to talk about the Roman Empire.

However, I didn’t get into it properly until a year or two ago when I started watching TOS, and the movies, and a couple other shows (Like SNW but idk i don’t particularly love SNW overall, there are a couple bits I like like Scotty, Uhura, the crossover and musical eps). My fav show now is TOS and the voyage home is a comfort movie at this point. Plus it’s nice to listen to the audiobooks when I study especially when i’m doing physics lmao

On a super unserious moment it’s so hard when your fictional “crushes” are from shows from the 60s because my friends don’t see the vision ;)

What about you, what’s your lil story of how you got into it?

I hate to be the parent (have three children including a 16 year old son), be careful who you interact with and make sure if you decide to do something with someone you meet online, make sure someone you trust knows who and where you are meeting someone and make sure you meet publicly.

Welcome to the board, and have fun. It is a great group of people of varying ages and interests.
Very much this.

I think there's a pretty low chance of anyone predatory being on here, but that chance is obviously not zero.

If you ever (and I mean EVER) have any concerns about something of that nature, please bear in mind that in the U.K. contingent we have moderators who are clergy and serving police officers, some of whom actually know each other in real life, which is an additional degree of security.

Personally, I trained as junior and infant school teacher and have been CRB checked, but not for over a decade. And you only have my word for that anyway.

I'm not trying to scare you, far from it. This should be a safe environment and there's some good people around if you feel uncomfortable.

This is one of the most heartwarming messages ever??? idk how to describe it but like thank you so much (currently upset the emojis on here don’t include the hands making a heart one bc i can’t add it).
I don’t have access to message functions for two weeks or so anyway because of the site, so hopefully if i’m still here then that i’ll have some more kind of know how about the site. I try to be careful online because i have been cyberstalked and worse when i wasn’t careful.
Very much adore the parental vibe in this thread :)

You're welcome.

Right, I'll leave you in peace to explore then. Enjoy, and see you on the board !

:)

Welcome aboard. And by all means don't worry about getting too silly or goofy about Trek. Lord knows I can seldom resist an opportunity to get a cheap laugh. The way I see it, if we can't have fun and joke around sometimes, what's the point of hanging out here and chatting with other fans?

And speaking as an old dinosaur who (dimly) remembers watching TOS during its original run on NBC back in the sixties, it always warms my heart to see younger fans embracing TOS.

This makes me feel so happy, I think so far my favourite part about this fandom is the cross generational interactions (especially this website) it makes me so happy i keep smiling every time some people welcome me here :)
I feel adopted by the thread lmao

Nah TOS is my fav so far, I rewatch episodes on my bus rides to college lol I think the show is so silly and I love trying to explain episodes to my friends and it’s just pure nonsense

Welcome! Don't worry about being silly - most of us are, regardless of age!

I told a guy in my physics class that I like Star Trek, and other nerdy ish fandoms and that I like going to comic-con and he was shocked saying he’d never expect it like i was too girly/basic or some shit etc
I'm sorry you experienced that. It's not always easy being female in geekdom. There are still a lot of assumptions out there.

Lighthearted but as in adults aren’t gonna wanna talk with older teens about trek (a lot have it on a DNI list in their bio) and finding fans my age is a STRUGGLE those that do know people that watch it it’s always their dad
Personally, I have several friends in their teens and love talking movies/tv with them.

Conventions and comic/game stores are good places to meet people your own age. When you go to uni, you're likely to meet people there too (I met my first group of geek friends in college).

That's so cool!

I get that. I had the same experience when I was your age and into older shows.

I think uni will be good too for the geeky side and just growing into my own person yk?

I tell my friends my newest TV “crush” and immediately they have to ask if they’re a pensioner or buried:weep: it’s a tragedy truly (curse of watching old Hollywood, Trek, Dr Who etc)

My latest physics teacher was telling us her stories being a woman in those kinds of areas and it has scared me when i want to go into that kinda thing sooo oops:whistle:

Yeah I like cons but sadly my local comic shop closed down so there isn’t one near me for about 45 minutes

Tell them to make their own time machine, you aren't sharing yours!

So real, they just don’t see my vision ! !

Also mini tangent before I started watching SNW i was starting to watch old hollywood and had a mini Gregory Peck obsession (who wouldn’t after watching roman holiday) and then I had to watch SNW after finding out Ethan was Gregory’s nepo (grand) baby and had an “omg” moment over that :lol:

I'm a classic movie nerd myself, thanks to having a grandpa who was an actor in the 40's through 60's, so I'm right there with you! The fun part is when you start noticing folks from TOS and even TNG scattered about these movies, years before they tripped the light Trektastic. There's a thread over in the TOS forum about that exact topic as well.

Also, welcome to the board!

Man, I wish 16 again. No worries about money, because my mom buys everything and the only chores I have to do is putting the dishes in the dishwasher and putting the dishes on the table again
I will say the fun thing about being an adult (in body, perhaps not so much in mind) is being able to buy all the things I wanted when I was 16, but couldn't afford or con my parents into getting for me.

There's way too much math in this forum lately.

Make sure you watch "Spellbound", a great Hitchcock film that also sets up Mel Brooks' "High Anxiety". OK, so "High Anxiety" is a parody of Hitchcock's oeuvre, but "Spellbound" provides the framework.

Omg i can’t wait to start making actor connections and feel like a genius lol
Thanks for the welcome<3

I never realised how much of what I type i rely on emojis until this site i’ve had to adapt my texting style:lol:

I definitely will, thanks! I’ve had spellbound on my list for a WHILE now just a matter of finding time and good places to watch it lol
