Anyone here think the moon landings were faked?

I was looking at a thread over in Sci Fi and Fantasy about an upcoming movie about a top secret moon-mission, and that got me thinking about all the people I know that truly believe we never even went to the moon in the first place.

This, distressingly, is a lot of people in my life. Personally, I have little trust in the American government, but I don't buy into the Moon Hoax theory, if only because that would mean there were thousands of people in the 60s and 70s who were pretty sure they were building stuff for moon missions, or, you know, went there.

But still, I run into SO MANY PEOPLE who think the landings were faked! This being a Star Trek board and all, I figure most folks here must be more knowledgeable than that. But you never know! Anyone here boarding the conspiracy train? Discuss!

I seem to recall an EPIC fake moon-landing thread on this board some years ago. Truly lolsome. Anyone remember it (or better yet, have it saved)? Might have been a Barcalow or Quacker thread?

I'm pretty sure JohnM was our resident moon truther.

Yeah, that's ringing an (alarm) bell or two. :D

Damn, I wish I'd saved that thread. People were pulling their hair out with him, and I'm not even sure if it was just metaphorical. :guffaw:

I remember a guy from work talked about the moon landings being fake.

I told him that the Soviet union were watching the moon landing closely, and then asked him what he thought the Soviet union would do if they indeed found out that it was fake.

He stopped talking about the moon landing after that ;)

Well then I guess it's a good thing that more entities worked on those projects than just the "American government" as that gives you a broad sample to research & draw your own conclusions from. I would also recommend looking into the numerous HAM operators from around the world who tracked every mission from launch to splash down.

Two good sites to start you on your way are Bad Astronomy and Moon Base Clavius. If you're feeling frisky and want to see multiple (and often conflicting) hoax theories get taken apart by dozens of incredibly knowledgable (and ubleieveably patient) people then I would also recommend the Bad Astronomy & Universe Today Conspiracy Theories Forum.

I always thought that this was an important consideration that these guys overlook when they dismiss the moon landings as hoaxes. At that time, we were still in the Cold War and in a space race with the Soviets. I am assuming (maybe I am wrong?) that the Soviets could detect and verify the location of the Apollo vehicles and their transmissions. What a PR coup that would have been for them to have been able to embarrass the U.S. by showing the world that any or all of the moon landings were faked!

Also, the Jodrell Bank Observatory tracked each and every Lunar mission independently...And they still have the original tapes of each and every one..

I WATCHED the Saturn Vs lift-off from the Cape as a young boy.. That was no Special Effects sequence..

The Moon Hoaxers are simply stupid ...

I think the moon conspiracy, like many conspiracies, relies on the listener to think that the conspiracy would be an easy and preferable thing to do. Ugh...that barely makes sense...let me use examples:

Moon Landing Conspiracy Guy: "Well..wouldn't it just be easier and cheaper to just make it look like you went to the moon?"

9/11 Truther: "Well, the government did it as an excuse to start a war so that people would be behind the effort!"

KFC Nut: "The CIA put chemicals in the chicken to make black men sterile"

These all play on the idea that the outcome would be so beneficial that you're supposed to think it simply must have happened.
Like if I see my girlfriend coming out of a room with tennis player Marat Safin all sweaty and out of breath it'll be hard for me to think they'd just finished playing tennis.

PS: The KFC one is touchy....I of course don't mean it's beneficial for black men to be sterile, but that that conspiracy would play to many racist people's thinking as being beneficial.

I don't think the landings were faked, but I think we found something up there or out there that spooked us... that's why we closed down the program and destroyed the drawings for the Saturn rockets and the rest of the hardware.
