Anyone Here Like The Big Bang Theory Televison Show?

I've only see a few episodes - it seems as funny as lung cancer to me - some guys who appear to be middle-aged playing overgrown teenagers.

Isnt that what a lot of Star Trek fans are? When I go to the comic con there are a ton of people in their 40s and 50 in costumes. Whats wrong with that?

Mine was a slightly different point - the actors seem to be playing characters much younger than their faces can carry off.

I'm not sure exactly how old the characters are supposed to be, but three of them have been PhDs since before the show began 8 years ago, so the guys are likely all in their 30s. The oldest of the main cast is in his early 40s. In TV casting terms, that doesn't seem like a big stretch, and would have been even less so 8 years ago.

I like the show but don't love it. I do this this current season has been the best by far though. They've actually allowed the characters to change and progress this year. Shledon has made some serious emotional advancements, and Penny finally got her life on track.

I think they wasted a huge opportunity though; Shledon should have remained a teacher. That was a hilarious premise you could mine for years.

I don't think the characters are playing much younger than they are. The show did start 8 years ago. The actors that play Raj, Howard and Leonard are in their mid to late 30s and probably playing mid 30s at this point. The actor playing Sheldon is 42 and probably is playing about a 35 year old. Not a big stretch at all. If you look at how they all looked in the first episode until now its difficult to see any changes. The biggest change is that Leonard has gained weight.

I've spent my entire life being one of those people, I'm not going to contribute to their mockery.

I don't know. I'm one of those folks, too, as are most of my friends and colleagues, and I frequently laugh in recognition at the situations and dialogue on BBT. "Been there, had that very same comic-book debate."

Says the guy currently sipping coffee from a Star Trek mug, while sitting in an office adorned with action figures and autographed photos of everyone from Nichelle Nichols to the Creature from the Black Lagoon . . . :)

Whatever - I still find it as found as the clap.
So a major point you made was shot down and now you're getting huffy about it? Sheldon, is that you? :guffaw:

It cannot be shot down as it's my subjective not objective view - the 'whatever' is in reference to the fact that *explaining* to me why my subjective view is wrong is pretty pointless. Is Sheldon the slightly tubby one?

Um, claiming the actors are too old to play the characters when the characters are about the same age isn't a subjective view. It's just wrong.

I have known multiple people very similar to each of the characters on the show, not to mention seeing a little of myself in all of them. That's why it works.

The same can be said for other sitcoms like Modern Family, The Middle, Everybody Loves Raymond, All in the Family, and on and on. These shows work because there's more than a little reality behind them.

Seems to me that a lot of nerds who don't like Big Bang have the same complaints. It hits a little too close to home for them, and that makes them uncomfortable.

Sheldon is the tall one who looks like a praying mantis.

I think of other similarly popular sit-coms featuring "un-nerdly men", and see that they are made fun of by the writers just as much. Ladies man Sam Malone was portrayed as a bit of an idiot. Ladies man Barney Stinson? The dude obsessed with all things guy-oriented, Tim 'The Tool Man' Taylor? Sports Writer that everybody loves, Ray Barone?

Why can't 'we' take a joke? These BBT folks are portrayed as decent, fairly likable human characters?

Rules of Engagement played Timmy as the "normal" one of the group, with all of the others as stereotypes. Men and women both. Still, in that one I see bits of myself (and my wife--shhh) in the other characters.

We watch together and laugh, especially the one where Adam and Jen take ballroom dance lessons. Adam got serious about it and Jennifer didn't want to be there. That's when Jeff and Russell pass by and see Adam dancing with the instructor ...

That's one of the funniest scenes in any show I've ever seen. I laugh every time.

Sitcoms show us caricatures of ourselves and our friends, exaggerating the flaws we all have. If a show touches something we recognize in ourselves it's just doing its job.

I like it alright but too often the jokes are too obvious.
I think the slowly growing Penny-Sheldon friendship is the best part of the show, they have a great chemistry together and it's really cute. I might be in the minority, thinking that the show got substantially better with the introduction of the girls, Amy and especially Bernadette are pretty awesome.

Big Bang Theory is just another one of those lowest common denominator sitcoms aimed at a mainstream audience with predictable jokes and dull characters. It's not awful and I might get the occasional chuckle out of it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it.

Exhibit A.

Okay, here's a question to make your head spin: Would Sheldon watch BBT--and what would he think of it?

You know, that could actually be a funny episode . . .

He would be forced to watch it by the group, but complain the whole time, making everyone miserable. At the same time he would be jealous of the Sheldon character.
