Ironically, while Uber is not available in my area, stores will still sell Uber cards, which I assume is another way to pay. We do have another smaller rideshare service, but I've never had to use it.
I didn't think I would either, but as soon as I checked out of my hotel and walked out of the front door....there wasn't a car in sight. The streets were almost totally empty. It was like 10 minutes before a cab happened by.
yep, that's Uber Cash. You buy the card in the store and load its balance into your Uber account (like with iTunes or Amazon gift cards), after which you can use that balance to pay for a ride.
Yeah, which is ironic because you can't use them here as the service is not provided in our area. My only thought then is that maybe they can be used for Uber Eats, which is available.
Yeah, I suspect you're right. And I feel it's quite a waste of plastic, really. It's like they're trying to target a cultural demographic that doesn't exist. Half of the cards I see are for stores and restaurants that simply don't exist over here.
When it comes to those, people can always buy them and then send them to other people where they have those stores or restaurants as presents.That's like how the stores in my area with the gift card endcaps always have them for a restaurant chain whose nearest location is four and a half hours away.The exact same cards must get shipped to every store in the country, or something.

That reminds me, at Christmas one year, we did a gift swap thing, and I ended up unwrapping a gift-card for a movie theatre chain that we don't have where I live.
I am trying...trying...TRYING not to get miffed at the fact that Uber doesn't use the umlaut. 
anyhoo, I have another question: If you are at, for example, an airport and you call for an Uber, how do you tell them where in the airport they should come get you?
I mean, depending on what airline you're on, whether your flight was international, how many terminals the airport has, and a lot of other things, you could be pretty much anywhere...so how does the driver know where to go?

You can use the app to send a note to (or call) the driver to let them know precisely where to pick you up.
Sounds like you may need to relocate somewhere with more things!

Heh, that one's amusing. I don't think the American version of the card would have been accepted at a Canadian one anyhow. Reminds me of the time my Sister (who lives in the U.S) had given me a prepaid Visa or Mastercard gift card. Now it's fairly common and can be found pretty much anywhere, but at the time they were fairly a new thing, and at the time none of the local Canadian stores could figure out how to use them as they didn't have a process or ability to process them as they weren't our domestic market yet, and so I couldn't use the card.
Uber themselves quit offering pickups and dropoffs at Ontario International Airport, effective 2019 (that's Ontario, California for anyone unfamiliar with the airport).

The page itself is just a list of airports with no details. The idea is to click the airport name for the specifics on what's available there.
So if you click on Ontario Int'l, then the page for the airport has the intro paragraph grayed out, and a message at the top says they don't have pickups or dropoffs there.

I've never understood why Uber suddenly stopped offering drives to airports. I think a lot of them also stopped their shuttle services, so I don't know how the hell you're supposed to get to one of those airports if you don't want to have drive yourself and leave your car there until you get back.
