Anyone else use twitter?

Facebook status is really the way to go. I do have the Twitter application, though... so but I think that only like 3-4 people follow it.

Quite frankly, most of this "Web 2.0" social scene stuff seems incredibly uninteresting to me.

I tend to agree. I've skipped all the Facebook/etc sites. I do read a couple of political and finance blogs, but they're pretty large and closer in nature to a frequently updated news site. Not the typical "my life & opinions" type of blog. Of course, forums like this one are sort of somewhere on the social-networking continuum but have a different enough feel/balance to them to be enjoyable to use.

The thread deserves much kudos though, for the wonderful nominative convergence of Byrdman and Twitter. :D

Guys fyi, Levar Burton, Brent Spiner and Wil wheaton all use twitter. Its a great way to like actually keep in contact with them. Brent just joined up about 2 weeks ago and levar just quit smoking about a week ago and just celebrated a birthday too. It's kind of a cool thing to be able to do

Twitter seems to be an absolutely useless application, IMO, unless you're completely self-obsessed and have some sort of fantasy that other people care about what you're doing every second of the day.

It may have some practical business uses (I know some airlines and airports, for example, will send out alerts about weather or delays via twitter.) But overall, it just seems kinda stupid to me.

I don't know. I find it's nice to have if you want to throw a random thought, observation or question out into the world. It's especially useful if you're out and see something interesting, since you can just text an update to Twitter which you might otherwise forget.

Keep your thoughts to yourself! ;)

Doesn't it though! :) I'm actually just impressed that a nearly month-old thread that I started was resurrected. I'm usually a thread-killer!

Not for me. I have a blog that I keep updated with my Wii game reviews (check my profile if you're interested), but that's as close to having a personal web presence as I desire.

I have a lot of free time, yet I'm not able to keep up with so many sites at once. I have a Facebook account, which I check maybe once a week to see how oversees friends are doing, and that's it.

I heard on the news yet again this morning that places like Facebook are actually causing mental illness in some young people! Wow. Whatever happened to doing that the old fashioned way with drugs and booze...

I signed up for an account there the other day... no idea why and no idea who all the people are that are suddenly following me :-s

Quite frankly, most of this "Web 2.0" social scene stuff seems incredibly uninteresting to me. Talk about an entire generation of self-important assholes screaming "look at me" as if I'm supposed to give a shit.

 And how does this not also describe this post you just made?

You're criticizing people for posting thoughts on one web site...by posting that thought on a different website. Ok, whatever.

And for the record, Twitter has gotten me invited to a birthday party, a fundraiser at a bar for building wells in Africa, and also a conference at NPR about creating online media. And that's in just 6 weeks. No offense to the TrekBBS, but I've been here YEARS and haven't accomplished anything that useful with this place.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and if I'd been in Phoenix that time when LeVar Burton had an hour to kill and asked if anyone wanted to join him for a drink, I totally would have done that. I wasn't there, but the point is, he asked!

I don't feel a need to tell people what I'm doing every half hour.
...
Twitter feels like the same thing to me.

Twitter does themselves a TERRIBLE disservice by putting "What are you doing?" at the top of their page. See, it's totally made you misunderstand what it's for.

It should really say "What are you thinking?" Because that's what it really is.

I post the exact SAME kind of thoughts there as I do here. The only difference is, on Twitter I get replies from my coworker, my sister, my cousin, and some mom in Washington state that I don't really know but am learning more about every day. That's actually a much more personal experience than posting here, where I get an answer from someone with a Captain Picard avatar and a fake name. (Hey, me included! I do the same, I'm just saying, it's not as personal around here.)

Twitter is much more "real" than this place is, actually.

I love them both, but saying Twitter is pointless on the TrekBBS is pretty funny to me.

Yeah, I have a facebook but it's a bit blah.

I like my myspace, and my twitter too, I'm trekkerguy there aswell.
Just like everywhere...

And I mean everywhere. :shifty:

I have a Twitter account, my username is SadBoring as Cali and Trippy might have guessed when I added them.

I much prefer it to Facebook as it doesn't require the use of a real name.

Thanks.
I checked it, but to be honest it doesn't seem that appealing.

I saw that video last year and decided Twitter wasn't for me.

I tried Twitter this year and love it.

Conclusion: That's a bad video.

I can't tell you why it's bad, I'm just saying, that's what happened to me. (For that matter, every blog I read about Twitter made me NOT want to try it. I'm thinking it's a hard thing to explain, because I never "got" it until I actually used it.)

it's a bit too cumbersome for me to be using it on my phone regularly, but I did get the TwitterGadget for gmail which is pretty cool

I don't know why I have one, but I do.

The first few days I used it I learned I'm more polite when Stephen fry is watching me, I make Robert Llewlyn laugh and I have an easy way to tell Jonathon Ross I enjoy his wifes cleavage.

I'm too addicted to the internet :(

edit, probably impolite not to include http://twitter.com/theredeemed - but I can't say theres anything interesting there :p
