Anyone Else Not Like Trade Paperbacks?

^Why would you pay for books then give them away? I would go to a public library for free, if I were you, or sell them to a used book store. I've heard of others doing similar things, even of people going so far as throwing books in the trash (!) after reading once. Astonishing.

Personally I prefer mass market paperbacks. I rarely buy hardcover fiction, and I'll only buy trade paper if the publisher won't release a work in any other format.

Since we're just talking about MMPBs and fiction, I see no reason not to give them away.
I just left Foundation and Empire at a bus stop. Though I am in Taipei, so it won't be of much use to many people...also it's a sequel, so it's use to the passerby is close to zero.

Battlestar Galactica's mini series paperback was pretty good. It followed the mini series, but had extra material in it that wasnt on tv.

Most tie-in novels are like that. That's one of the reasons they say "The book is better than the movie".

Take the novelization of Star Trek V: The Final Frontier for example. The actual movie doesn't even start until something like 110 pages in. It's been twenty years since I read those, but I'm pretty sure the Star Trek III book is the same way.

Of course, that's not always the case.

Star Trek V was a great book. It's probably the only reason that I like the film. I read the novelization first.

I hate coffee table books, actually. THey are so unwieldy and don't hold coffee well.

The only thing I hate about Trade paperbacks is that I'm running out of shelf space for them.

I don't get that thing with the paper, either. I think it's meant to make the book look more artful/fancier or something, but it doesn't really make a difference one way or another IMO.

I actually don't mind trade paperbacks. They are making the mass-market paperbacks so cheaply these days that they can't take much abuse before falling apart. Since I'm always shoving a book in a large purse or suitcase, I can sometimes beat them up pretty badly. At least some of the trade paperbacks are slightly sturdier.

People throwing books in the trash make me sad. Why not just donate or give them away? I get wanting to have your own copy and read a book at your own pace, and then give it away once you're done. That's a nice gesture at least!

People who throw books away should have to pay a stiff fine. That's beyond scaralege (I can't spell it, but you get the idea).

As for the shelf space thing, I'm planning to ask my next-door neighbors to move, so I can store some of my books in their house. I recommend you do the same.

I don't throw them in the garbage, I either leave them somewhere or put them on a shelf at work for coworkers to take.

So did I. In fact, I was in the middle of reading it when I saw it in the theater for the first time. I remember sitting there, and knowing what was coming next, because of the book, up until about an hour or so in.

I feel the same, and sometimes I go back to older ones.

But it's throwing books in the trash that makes my stomach turn--not leaving them for someone else to pick up and enjoy. That's a nice gesture. The idea of throwing them out in the trash makes me sad.

I personally like Trades a great deal more than Mass Market because they're better designed from a graphical standpoint, and easier to read because of it. The increased linespacing and better margins make it a lot easier for me to follow from one sentence to the next, rather than the way paperbacks sometimes seem to merge together in my head.

But then, I've studied graphic design, so I'm warped.

Ah, the dog days of August, when the heat and humidity get so ri-goddamn-diculous that even the trade paperbacks start to warp, curl, and expand.

I wish I had a photo so I could illustrate, but suffice to say, all our paperback tables at the store look like crap no matter what we do.
