Anyone decent at editing photos?

I'm pretty terrible at it, and what I need done is really simple. Just take this star:

And make the background black. I have a really cheap program, and whenever I do it, there's still an outline of white around the star. I'd really appreciate your help. :D

I gave it a go without using the magic wand or color replacement in an effort to prevent the edge aliasing. I managed to keep the little dot of red below the elbow.
 
I did one too:

I'm guessing I used the same method Guartho did: the original image as an alpha mask to cut out the shape from a solid red layer on top of a black layer.
 
I inverted the image to make the background black. Then I used the hue/saturation adjustment to turn the center back to red.
