Anybody going to the inaguration?

I originally planned on returning home to Washington for this however plans changed over the holidays and I will not be able to go after all.

I would love to though, Metro insanity  aside, because like some others I recognize the historical significance of the event and well Inauguration Day is a pretty big deal anyway.

Pingles, get a snapshot or two for me, ok?

I'll be teaching and it's all new students. Really haven't made up my mind...I really need to keep to ther schedule, but I know there will be hissy fits from some of my students if we don't find a way to watch.

<Edit for brevity -- CM>
Ok, apparently people are breaking out all sorts of completely unfunny humor. I'll assume you're doing the same and aren't actually blind to the historical significance of the inauguration of the first African American President of the United States. If I'm wrong, well, all I can say is that I feel sorry for you that you suffer from such a profound strain of cynicism.

Actually, I'm not suffering from cynicism or a completely unfunny sense of humor.

I just don't find it all that interesting or historic -- his skin color makes no utter difference to me. We have a new President every four (or eight) years.

In short, he's just another politician who, like the character from The Hunt for Red October so aptly put, 'When I'm not kissing babies, I'm stealing their lollypops.'.

Still, YMMV. To each his/her own. :)

I'll be happy swooshing down the slopes at Lake Tahoe while this craptastic city of Washington DC goes completely wacko for a few days.

Cheers,

I don't think I'd want to go to an Inauguration - crowds, noise, mess, fair chance of some kind of petty theft/disturbance, and an even better chance of crappy views. Yeah, sure, historic event, etc, etc, but really, what are you going to tell the grandkids?

"I was there, as were a million other people all milling around and shouting. I got price-gouged to buy a hot dog, and I saw the top of Obama's head from half a mile away.

It was quite the day."

Nope, I'd give it a miss. I wouldn't go to a Coronation procession either (yeah, yeah, same difference... ;) ), or any similar mass event. Not my cup of tea. Besides, if you really want to watch (which I wouldn't, either) you'll get better views (& better amenities!) by watching on TV.

I would love to go to the inauguration, but even though I can't, I did still get to see Obama and Biden in person at a rally in my home town. That will have to be good enough!

...what are you going to tell the grandkids?

You'd embellish like all grandparents do or you'd flat out lie like all grandparents do.

Fuck your grandchildren. They're young and stupid. They'll beleive anything you say!

I wouldn't go to a Coronation procession either (yeah, yeah, same difference... ;) )

Except I don't think anyone actually likes Charles. ;) Man, he must be furious that his mom hasn't kicked the bucket yet.

Is there any point in going to the inauguration itself if I don't have tickets? Reading up it seems like there might be non-ticketed standing areas in the Mall, but it isn't clear if tickets required there.....the parade is ticket-less though.

Tickets aren't required for the non-ticketed areas...ergo...the "non-ticketed" part of the name of the area.

However you won't be able to actually see the inauguration stand from this area. Big screens will be provided.

Got my tickets and engraved invitation! We're in the silver standing section of the mall though...which is across the reflecting pool. Should have a decent view of the jumbotrons at least.

I wanted to go. I have an aunt that lives in DC, but I didnt feel like fighting the crowds. I'll be at work, but I'll watch it on tv in the colonel's secretary's office.
