Anybody Else Find The Kirk/Spock/Mccoy Scenes In TFF Fantastic?

Yes, completely. I actually like Final Frontier, and the scenes and chemistry between the triad are the entire reason why. The whole Brig/Breakout sequence on the Enterprise is just pure gold because of those three.

I agree also. TFF is not the greatest of all the Trek movies but it is clearly way better that Nemesis. I love all the parts with the triad in that movie. The big breakout is great, Kirk and McCoy trying to teach Spock how to sing campfire songs is terrific and the whole rocket boots thing in the turbolift shaft is great.

I enjoy The Final Frontier because of those Kirk/Spock/McCoy scenes. This was the movie, I felt, that got the friendship close to what it was in the series.

I love the scenes with the trinity, but for some reason seeing them camping felt out of character. I doubt Kirk, McCoy, and reborn Spock would've found a better place to hang out instead of Earth. Maybe the budget prohibited them from being imaginative. And I thought they should've had women along with them. Maybe Gillian making a guest appearance would've been interesting.

I admit I thought of Sam when he said that, but let's take a moment and look at when each event happened.

Sam died about 25+ years before this, Spock had died and was "reborn" about 5 years ago. I'm not saying that Jim had forgot about Sam, but he had passed much longer ago than what happened to Mr. Spock.

Wasn't it just a few months, maybe? 2-5 happen back to back, if I'm not mistaken. "Lets see what she's got, the Captain said." bridges 5 to the end of 4. Definitely not 5 years. By Undiscovered Country, it would be around 5 years, possibly.

To the original question that started this threat....YES, YES, YES....I loved the Kirk, Spock, McCoy scenes in this movie.....but the scene at the very end..them back at the camp ground....that seemed a little too much. They should have wrapped it up on the bridge like from the good ol' days of the classics series.

It seems a lot of people get fired up about the "brother" comment and think that it completely ignores Kirk's brother Sam.

I for one never gave it a second thought. Kirk said "I lost A brother once," and went on to be clear that he was talking about Spock. He did not say "I lost MY brother once" which would have implied something completely different.

I think it's just another nit-pick area people who already don't like the movie like to poke at.

An older thread, and so this is a bit late to the party...anyway, my take (developed over time, not necesarily what I thought back in 1989) is Kirk mentioned it knowing his friends would initially think he was referring to his brother Sam, but then turned it around on them (a "see what I did there?" moment). The audience can be "in on it" or not, depending on their level of "knawledge".

And I do like the Kirk / Spock / McCoy scenes in the movie very much, actually used to watch the movie just for those...but over time I have grown to like most of the rest of the movie as well. And in moments when my wife gets "overly affectionate" in public, I will usually say "dear, not in front of the Klingons".:)

For me the best dramatic scene with the trio is when Sybok shows them their innermost pain. DeForest Kelly's performance alone is astonishing. Kirk's denial, and Spock's quiet shame. It really got to the heart of what makes these characters who they are...and why they continue to endure. Of the 6 original films, this was the one that got the rapport between characters closest to the original series. Silly at times, yes, but so was TOS...at times.

The Jack Marshall "pilot episode" cut of Final Frontier is, for me, the definitive version. I love that fan edit / movie SO much. Final Frontier has a hidden masterpiece hidden in it. I'd kill for a high res/def copy of that edit....

I think most everybody loves those scenes. It's just the question of whether you think they salvage the whole movie. I think they do to an extent, I think it's okay on the whole because those great scenes and the terrible ones balance each other out.

I agree. It's unfortunate that all the behind the scenes problems and developmental meddling harm what is otherwise quite a lovely showcase for these actors, obviously having a blast hanging out and playing these roles one more time. Star Trek V was kind of like the "Let's just have a fun adventure" before we get serious again with Star Trek VI.

I also really enjoyed the scenes toward the end, or rather scene, where Kirk, Spock, and McCoy debate whether "God" really is out there.

"I lost a brother once...I was lucky I got him back"

"I thought people like us don't have families?"

"I was wrong"

That type of unabashed sentimentality is one of the main reasons why I can never skip Star Trek V when having the semi-annual marathons...there's just too many great moments (followed by some not so great ones) but then the Original Series was like that too...

He'd have to throw it out and start over.

No. Not at all, in fact.

In there amongst the flaws and warts is actually a completely relevant and classic Star Trek story. And, as the theme of this thread points out, the relationship stuff between the characters is at its very best in this film.

Again, I suggest anyone who dislikes the movie to watch the Jack Marshall cut..... it is so perfect, so classic TOS; the pacing is excellent, and its the length of an episode. Unfortunately, I only have a low res file... the classic sound FX and musical cues, the streamlined pacing, and the removal of some of the more glaring blunders, change the entire feel of the movie.

The parts of that movie I find tolerable are the campfire scenes and the scene where McCoy remembers his father.

The "Captain Kirk is Climbing a Mountain" video was amusing, as was the Star Trek Continues parody "Captain Kirk is Building a Fountain".

Otherwise, the movie was crap.

Yeah these scenes were just all gold to me, hearkening back to the series and capturing both the humour and the depth of character (in the Sybok scene). I think Shatner is great in that scene in particular - 'I NEED my pain!'
Final Frontier is flawed for sure, but it had charm that was harder to find in Undiscovered Country, which kind of lacked that golden trio dynamic (a pity, for the final film of the franchise, in my opinion).

TFF is loaded with exceptionally bad moments, especially the horrendous comedy routines. Everyone except Uhura is made out to look like a total fool, especially Scotty who gets the worst of it.

And yet the non-comedic scenes with the Big Three make up for it all, Shatner did a great job with the direction.

Then add in their scenes with Sybok. He's underrated as a villain.

One has to wonder how the movie became a big mishmash of really great material along with what's essentially the nadir of all pre-2003 Trek. Paramount wanted more comedy thanks to the success of TVH, that much is common knowledge and the comedy pretty much kills a movie that needed to have a consistently serious feel to it...
