Xena leads Akemi across the bridge to meet Gabrielle. Akemi is very respectful, eyes downcast, half bowing as she goes.
Gabrielle, on the other hand...
well lets just say she looks a little off balance! I think Lucy said it best in the commentary when she laughed at how Gabrielle was "trying to be so gracious".

We're outside again... on the side of the forest near the teahouse. Gabrielle looks different. Instead of the Japanese armor over her red sports bra... she's wearing it over this great blue blouse. And instead of her short red skirt, she's wearing what looks like a long blakc skirt. In reality they are long black leggings.
The sacred katana is passed from Harukata's hands to Xena's,

Gabrielle arrives at the General’s encampment. Its night time, and the rain is just pouring down. She slips past the horse corral and spies two guards walking by. Using her whip, she lassos one guard about the neck and pulls him back towards her waiting kick.

Down he goes. The second guard likewise runs at her, and catches the same foot in his face.

Remember the opening lesson on the boat between Gabby and Kenji as they circled each other using bamboo sticks as weapons?

Gabrielle and the General circle slowly, stepping carefully as we hear the sounds of the encampment; the bonfire as it blazes, the horse whinneying from the coral, the water running across the ground.

They circle clockwise, then they go counter as their audience (his army) watches in silence.

His HEAL has come off the muddy ground and his forefoot is digging down to POUNCE... and so he does.

But she’s ready for him.
She side steps and brings her sword down on his weapon as he passes, knocking him and it to the ground before her. Then she whips the katana back up to hover just millimeters over his neck.

The demon bends forward, causing the old ghost killer to be pulled from the tub like a fisherman landing a carp. The old man goes flying over the top of Yodoshi, and as he does pulls the katana from the demon's back. The sword falls helpless to the ground, as does Harukata himself.
Not one to waste an opportunity, Xena catches up the katana and kicks the dark lord into the hot tub where she probably thinks killing him with the katana will be as easy as shooting fish in a barrel.
If that's what s thought, she would be mistaken.
Thrust after thrust merely finds more water, and in fact as she yells in frustration...
XENA: “Where is he?”

A flame blazes from Yodoshi's mouth as Xena follows her own example. Unfortunately her "Greek" idioms are not easily translated by the 2 other Geisha's in the teahouse as the nameless one basically goes up in flames as she runs away, never to be seen again. The other, Akemi, is also on fire and is neatly kicked into the "hot tub" by the ever thinking Warrior Princess as she battles Yodoshi for control of the sword.
Kenji the monk who was derided by his former associate of being so afraid of "everything", grabs a (?) prayer scroll and stands to confront Yodoshi.
Alas, Yodoshi feels the threat and spins Xena about as they both hold the sword that severs Kenji's head from his body.

I liked the shows but my big complaint about them is the rewrite of history and mythology. For example, it was Hercules who killed his own family in a drunken rage (although the drunkenness was caused by Hera) and Xena was obviously a time traveler who traveled several thousand years, and even into the future, or our past.
Yeah... that time traveling aspect of Xena (1500 years within her story line, not counting her reincarnated/cloned selves)used to make me laugh too, but I got over it
when I decided that Xena was simply an archetype of all women from ancient history who's contributions (positive or negative) were glossed over by the men who wrote the histories.You go... girls!

An aside.
It confused me for quite a while when I considered the film editor's choices for the flash back scenes during the burning of our Princess' body.
Oh... not the "If I had" scene. Heck that one has already been used 3 times BEFORE this funeral. And definately NOT the "comfort" scene from the prison. Heck, that one is a staple of so many youtube vids that I assumed even TPTB could feel the power of it.
No, I was confused about the choice of the last flashback.

Unlike many fans, I truly believe the teenager loved her Greek turned Trojan soldier. He was, afterall, her "first" love, but I suspect that he wasn't her "greatest" love.
By reminding us of Perdicus at a time like this and by reminding us that for him death WAS an obstacle he couldn't surmount... it shows us in vivid detail the difference between Gabrielle's two loves... and it sure isn't gender.

He sees a hawk perched on a tree limb and turns his one armed self into a mist to inhabit it.

XENA: “She’ll succeed. Don’t worry, she’s very good at what she does.”
Akemi still can't look Xena in the eye, and its starting to worry the Warrior Princess.
Akemi: “I’m so sorry.”
XENA: “Akemi… what’s wrong.”

So MANY decades ago, it was a frightened Akemi that held out her hand to a Warrior Princess in her Chinese warlord's prison and was pulled to "safety".
This time, its a resolute Xena who offers the hand.

I forgot to mention, for you "broadcast only" watchers, this last tete e tete between Xena and Akemi was never seen in the first run. Its only in the director's cut, and hints to the audience what's going to happen when Xena finally defeats the lord of the darkland.
In the commentary on the broadcast version, Rob Tapert makes note of this lapse and Lucy can be heard to say, "Yay, that was a terrible cheat." = leaving this scene out in the first go round.
Its amazing all the little lines that never made it in the broadcast version, not to mention whole scenes like this last one.
In fact, one of my fav lines of the whole show is only in the director's cut, and is coming up next.
