Any Xena:WP fans on the boards?

Aside #4...

The commentaries were quite lively during the Caesar/Alti/Xena/Brutus balcony scene. Lucy calling from the peanut gallery... "Oh NEVER WAIT!" when Xena delayed Alti's execution in favor of a public one before the forum. Rob and Renee then did a few riffs on James Bond movies to explain why waiting was never "good". (Gives Bond time to get away!)

Lucy loved the complexity of the wordless scenes that soon followed, and the fact that no-one (except Caesar) seemed to understand everything that was going on.

As Gabrielle was being led away by the Roman guards... Rob pointed out the silent centurion that watched her pass by... "TED!" was Renee's happy reply.

This is where its GOOD to have an executive producer with foresight. :bolian:

8 days before principle filming was to begin, Rob realized that "this little role" would be perfect for Ted Raimi (AKA Joxer). I LOVED it, especially the way they will use him as the show goes on. There's nothing of Joxer in this character... but his presence will provide us with another (if unintended) bookend at the end of this story.

The peanut gallery was very active during this first prison scene between Gabrielle and Xena.

"If Gabrielle had never met Xena... would she have left home and become a playwright?" Lucy to Renee as they watched this scene, and Renee's quick reply? "Sure."

I liked Renee's take on Gabrielle, that the adventurous soul would have found a way to follow her dreams even if Xena wasn't there to lead her astray/away. Rob seemed to think Gabrielle would have just settled for Perdicus and the "expected" life of a woman in ancient Greece.

Interestingly... the first draft of "When Fates Collide" had Gabrielle as a happily married woman, living among the vineyards of Greece with her children at her side. TPTB then realized that Gabrielle wouldn't have been able to "leave" that life behind. Rob doesn't spell out what he means by "leave"... as in "leave Greece to travel to Rome with the Theater company." or... "leave home to follow this new Romanized Xena."

Later, he does clarify that TPTB wanted Gabrielle's life to be "unfullfilled" despite her success as a playwright. Just as we have seen thus far that Xena's life is lacking, despite her success as Empress of Rome. [ "...all of Rome talks about you. The country thrives. The people adore you. They say that the army would follow you through the gates of Hades."]

I find that plan, that thesis to be quite shocking, given TPTB's long time contention that these two were "just" friends.

Getting back to the woman in the rag dress last seen in "Ides of March"...

I love this first prison scene for a variety of reasons, one being the realization that (like Xena) THIS Gabrielle is NOT our Gabrielle. She's never harmed anyone in her life, thus far. By this time (The Debts) in our universe, Gabrielle had already killed Meridien, not to mention cracked more than a few skulls with her fighting staff in the last 2 1/3 years.

She's not a fighter... and yet she's not a lover either. She's unmarried, and given her confusion over the connection these two are obviously feeling towards one another, she's probably not evolving into a current day Sappho. (Sappho will appear in the Xenaverse in "another" 29 years).

"That's what we all dream about, isn't it? Someone who looks so deeply into our soul that they'd find something worth dying for."

Gabrielle hasn't yet found that love, hasn't yet found those eyes that can search her soul for meaning... and the striking thing, as Xena turns back to look at Gabrielle once more before she finally quits the cell... the striking thing is that neither one has an INKLING yet as to why they are so drawn to one another.

Gotta disagree, there's plenty of Joxer in the Centurion, even with that little look he can convey a great deal. Here we see him as the respected warrior he always wanted to be but it hasn't actually made him happy

Do we know he isn't happy? He's married, he has children, he has a job which brings him in contact with the Empress at least once before, since she had her physician treat his youngest child.

As you have pointed out, this man is probably everything Joxer wanted to be, a serious warrior rather than a clown to be sneared at.

Xena: “No, Gabrielle, this is crazy. You can’t be in love with Joxer. He’s... well, he’s Joxer!”

One wonders if in this new reality he still married Meg and if Virgil is his eldest son.

Unlike our two best friends, I can't honestly say that his new life without them is less meaningful than his old life, since he actually spent most of his old life without Xena & Gabrielle in it in the first place.

That the Centurion is loyal to the Empress he feels saved his daughter's life.. that is indisputable.

That he follows her willingly and not only keeps her secrets but looks out for those secrets (Gabrielle) counter to the Emperor himself, that is also indisputable.

That such loyalty has been seen in Joxer is also indisputable, so if you are using that yardstick to measure these two characters... I defer to your interpretation.

When I said there wasn't "any Joxer" in the silent Centurion, I meant I couldn't see any evidence of the clueless clumsy clown that simpered after Gabrielle.

In the commentaries, Tapert noted Joxer didn't seem to have an eye for Gabrielle... although Renee felt he had an unexpected "fondness".

Again, I took it as a wise man who realized this woman was important to his Empress, which made her important to him.

Now, although unintended by the writer, I will be outlining the way this centurions life & the Empress's mirrors Joxer's & Xena's in "Fallen Angel" before this ep ends. That's why I loved Tapert's decision to put Joxer into this "small" role, giving depth to a character that would have been impossible with some other anonymous actor.

Episode # 133 Season 6 #18 "When Fates Collide"

ACT Two continues:

The Empress and the Centurion arrive outside Alti's cell. Xena's game face is FULLY on as she utters a command!

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_636.jpg

Xena: "Unlock it."
Neo:
(Silly man) "But Caesar said... "
Xena: (Her head whips to look at him as she GROWLS)"... to enrage the Empress till she beats the tar out of you?"
Neo: (You can almost HEAR him GULP!) "No, I must have missed that. I'll open the door."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_647.jpg

She enters the cell where Alti is simply sitting quietly, measuring each other like two seasoned warriors.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_643.jpg

Xena: (To her guard, Neo) "Get out." (She waits for him to lock her in and leave before advancing on Alti with an accusatory tone.) You implicated the playwright as your accomplice."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_181cd.htm

Alti:
[Laughs] "The playwright? Are you kidding me? What do you want?"

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_180cd.htm

(Xena's face hardens, to keep from revealing her surprise over Alti's revelation before she states her case)

Xena: "Your hands on me like they were last night. They gave me insight and knowledge. These are things I value greatly."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_184cd.htm

Alti: "And why would do that?"
Xena: "Then rot." (She turns to leave)

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_185cd.htm

Alti:
"Wait. Free me... and I'll show you things."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_186cd.htm

Xena: "You keep in mind what my husband will do to you if I am harmed in any way."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_188cd.htm

Alti: (She glides up to Xena) "Oh... your husband?"

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_676.jpg

She places her hand around the Empress' neck, and Xena's head extends backwards as new images flood her brain. There's no blood draining from her nostrils THIS time as Alti continues her exploaration, but there is pain. Pain on ALTI's face as well as Xena's as they try to understand the conflicting memories...some with dialogue attached...

[On a beach, 13 years ago from "Destiny"...
Julius Caesar: "Break her legs." Xena: [Screams as a centurion takes a sledge hammer to her]

Empress Xena: "Ow-w-w!"
[In a Siberian forest from "Adventures in the Sin Trades"...
Shamanness Alti: (Leaning over a prostrate Xena, both covered in deer hides and antlers) "Tell me who the blonde one is! Tell me who she is!"
In a converted weapon's depot from "One Against as Army"...
Gabrielle: "You taught me that there are things worth dying for."
In Rome, from "Ides of March"...
Julius Caesar: "You can't have a crucifixion without crosses, Brutus."
In the temple of the Fates, this ep's teaser...
Julius Caesar: "... which brings me to this... defining Xena moment... mysterious...
romantic...
good lighting."]

And some without dialogue attached, like visions of Caesar before the senate when he's about to be assassinated, young Caesar and young Xena kissing on the beach, Alti and Caesar having sex in Xena's bedchambers,

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_685.jpg

as Xena looks on... dressed as she was for the theater 2 nights ago.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_690.jpg

Scenes from "the Abyss" where Gabrielle is about to be roasted alive... scenes of BOTH Gabrielle and Xena being crucified... but not on a beach. This time it was in the snowy mountains of Italy. Scenes of Gabrielle lying in Xena's lap, trying to stay warm after her near drowing in "The Abyss", and scenes of Xena lying in Gabrielle's lap, being kissed before the guards take them for their crucifixion.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_742.jpg

Its finally too much for both Alti and Xena, and the connection between them is broken. Xena stumbles away an has to hold herself up by grabbing the bars of Alti's cell.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_770.jpg

Alti: "Those images... they're not from this life. There's something... more."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_772.jpg

Xena: "Yes, much more."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_199cd.htm

Alti: "Now, your part of the bargain."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_201cd.htm

Xena: (Suddenly, Xena looks up. Its too quiet.) "The hammering's stopped."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_781.jpg

From nowhere, her Centurion arrives at the cell door with frightening news.

Neo: "They've taken the playwright."

The interior jail cell scene switches to an exterior shot.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_204rcd.htm

Gabrielle is being led out of the building and down to the courtyard where we once saw Empress Xena ride her warhorse and shoot arrows at Brutus not so long ago. For those who remember the dignified stately way Gabrielle walked out of her prison in "Ides of March" towards her execution, THIS is quite a different story. This woman is afraid... she doesn't want to die, she especially doesn't want to die THIS way!

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_785.jpg

They bring her to the cross in the courtyard, and lie her down before tying her to the cross.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_207cd.htm

All she can do is hyperventilate and cry...

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_808.jpg

... and close her eyes to pray to whatever God or Goddess who might be listening, to deliver her from this cruel fate.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_812.jpg

Aside #5... (Back from the BBQ!)

:rommie:

This is just a quickie.

One of the things that makes me laugh in the commentaries by Renee and Lucy, is their problem with pronouns. Frequently, in the past, Renee will talk about "me"/"you" and Lucy will correct her with "Gabrielle"/"Xena". Frequently... but not always. Lucy does occasionally lapse into the "me"/"you" reference instead of "Xena"/"Gabrielle"... and in this commentary IIRC she does both. i.e. she asks Renee "would you have left home to follow Xena" and Rob does the same.

The reason I think this is funny, is it also shows the proprietary hold they each have on their characters... one Lucy will show us later in her commentary on the episode's penultimate scene.

Part of the "proprietary hold" Renee has on Gabrielle can be interpreted as Renee's hold on Gabrielle's hold on Xena.

Its the only way I can understand Renee's audible disbelieving snort "WHAT?!!!" when Alti asks the Empress "what" she wants and Xena tells her, "I want your hands on me..." ;)

Oh... and yes, both women laughed aloud in the commentary track when the Empress threatened to beat the tar out of Neo/Joxer. :guffaw:

See... that would NOT have been as funny, if the character was played by some nameless newbie to the Xenaverse.

Thanks again, Rob Tapert! :bolian:

Episode # 133 Season 6 #18 "When Fates Collide"

ACT III begins

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_812.jpg

Gabrielle: "Uh!"

The Centurions are methodical in their preparations, tying Gabrielle's arms and legs to the cross, placing the wood shims over the palms of her hands through which they will drive the huge spikes that will secure her painfully to her wooden deathbed. She's crying as the centurion raises his mallet on high, ready to drive the first spike into her right hand when suddenly a door opens from the prison...

Xena: "Stop!

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_208cd.htm

The centurion's hand and hammer were on the downswing as she cried out... and he's OBVIOUSLY well trained to heed THAT voice as he stopped! mid swing and simply stared back at the Empress and her Emperor.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_226cd.htm

Xena stalked to Caesar's side.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_843.jpg

Xena: I know the truth, Caesar. I know who I was. I know who you were."
Julius Caesar: (Denial ain't just a river in Egypt, baby!) "What on Earth are you talking about?"
Xena: (She who MUST NOT be swayed!) "Crucifying me on the beach was drastic. I must have been your worst nightmare."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_213cd.htm

Julius Caesar: "Yes... well, I've had better experiences with women."

I love the fact that she's basically been bluffing him with only a few facts as she could glean from the Alti visions, facts that she really didn't believe until he confirmed them.

Xena: "So, it is true... you betrayed me!"
Julius Caesar: (Charm alert!) "A regret I harbored for eternity... so I gave us a second chance."
Xena: "You tampered with the Fates and their loom. This is
madness."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_866.jpg

I love how as these two negotiate, Gabrielle is STILL tied to the cross as several centurions wait with spikes at the ready to finish the job.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_219cd.htm

Julius Caesar: "Listen, my love. As we speak, our legions are preparing to conquer the kingdom of Lao Ma... the richest province in Ch'in. Once achieved, all nations will bow at our feet. We'll be the Emperor and Empress... not just of Rome, but of the world. That is our destiny."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_861.jpg

Xena: "And that can still happen. If you set her free I will be your Empress and we will conquer the world. But if you kill her I will dedicate this life to changing things back to the way they were... and I can do it, because we both know I have many skills."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_874.jpg

He stares into that face for several beats as the courtyard and one small playwright from Athens waits with bated breath...

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_223cd.htm

Julius Caesar: (Looking at the Centurions around the cross, he simply raises his hand and announces...) "Release the prisoner."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_883.jpg
http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_886.jpg

I still want to know which god/goddess she was praying to at this moment.

The men hurriedly untie the prisoner from her cross as the Empress herself flies down the steps to release her, tossing men aside who are too clumsy to stay out of her way.Too bad she doesn't spare a backwards glance to the unhappy man she left at the top of the stairs...

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_889.jpg

Xena: "Gabrielle!" (To the common soldiers obstructing her path) "Get out of the way! Get your filthy hands off
her!"
Finally the Empress reaches the woman still lying on the cross as she's trying to sit up.
Xena: Gabrielle... can you stand? Are you all right?"

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_231cd.htm

Xena gently pulls Gabrielle to a standing position, but the playwright who had no trouble looking into the Empress' eyes after the play, nor from her balcony when clad only in a sheet, nor even while in her prison cell after being stripped of her clothes and shorn of her golden tresses... THAT woman can't bring herself to look up into her savior's eyes.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_907.jpg

Gabrielle: "Thank you for saving my life, Empress. I am in your debt."
Xena:
"I'm not your Empress."

And now we discover that the beautiful velvet dress isn't a dress at all. Its a deeply purple wrap, with a dark green inner lining, as Xena whips it off her shoulders and wraps it around the woman dressed only in rags.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_916.jpg

Xena: "I'm your friend." (She looks up and shouts to a centurion nearby) "Bring her a horse!

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_920.jpg

Xena then turns back to the shocked woman before her, and raises the ante a thousand fold by leaning down and embracing her.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_923.jpg

Xena: (Whispers directly into her ear) Gabrielle, go back to your vineyard by the sea. Be happy. Write all those great plays you've got inside you."

And just as quickly, Xena breaks off the embrace and turns to walk away from the playwright forever. She just didn't take one little factor into account. One blonde factor.

Gabrielle: "Xena... Xena!

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_239cd.htm

Gabrielle: When I thought I was going to die... it all
became so clear.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_240cd.htm

Gabrielle: "My life is empty, despite my success. I write about love, but I've never felt it before."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_243cd.htm

Xena turns back to hear an extraordinary confession.

Gabrielle: "I write about love, but I've never felt it before."

And as one heart admits to never having felt love before, another reaches out a hand to wipe away a tear.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_945.jpg

Sadly, this Empress has finally caught a clue... a clue about love and a clue about the danger that comes with love.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_246cd.htm

Xena: "Rome is not safe for you. Leave now."
Gabrielle: "I will never forget you."

The Empress gives a knowing headshake to the two Centurions who have stepped up to escort Gabrielle out of the courtyard, and eventually out of the city. Xena watches her leave...

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_248cd.htm

... then remembers she has bigger problems than an Athenian playwright.

Sigh. :sigh:

I'm such a soft touch... and yet cheap as well!

I learned this weekend that Creation entertainment, the corporation that runs the star trek cons I attend, will be holding their last Xena con next January in Burbank. After spending all this time on Xena.. I decided it was time to breakdown and buy some memorabilia before creation "runs out". (I guess I won't bother campaigning for an east coast con at this rate. :p)

Now... if I was really a soft touch and NOT so damned cheap, I'd hop a plane and attend the last con... but alas, The money I'd spend on airflight and hotel alone would get me the best of everything in the creationent store (well... maybe not the gold chakrams for 800 dollars!) ... so I'm staying here and having fun with the credit card tonight. :guffaw:

If you are on the west coast of the good old USA... or plan to be next January, you might want to consider dropping by the Burbank Marriot. If you do, drop back here and tell me how silly I was to miss the "real" last dance.

Thank god for "Youtube". :bolian:

Remind me, is it centurion joxer who crucifies gabby?

Yeah, everyone should go to a xena, if only just once

No... he doesn't. He's with Xena as Gabby is taken away.

He doesn't technically crucify Xena either... but we're getting ahead of ourselves. ;)

I remember being "afraid" to go to my first Star Trek con, in case I wasn't "geeky enough", and I'd been a Trekkie since Trek began. I still remember running into a faux "Jadzia Dax" in the conference center bathroom, with her full length red leather wedding dress and thinking... "Oh my". :rommie:

Being a "Johnny come lately" to Xena:WP, I'd feel like a pretender amongst the ardent faithful.

You may be late to the party but I'm sure you'll make up for it with your enthusiasm:)

Well, my enthusiasm probably wouldn't withstand the sticker shock of 1200 dollars for the flight and 4 nights in the hotel... and THEN there's the convention tix/and ancillary costs of the con. Those 800 dollar gold chakrams are looking pretty cheap in comparison! ;)

This month a friend and I will drive to Boston, get 1 day tickets to see Shatner then get in the photo queue / autograph queue with "his holiness". I just hope its as much fun as 2 years ago when we saw Nimoy. I remember walking away from that photo op saying... "I just touched a Trek God. I spoke to him and he spoke back!" :bolian:

SWOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am SUCH a fangirl!

ETA: Don't even get me started on what happened when I met Mulgrew for the first time! :alienblush:

^^ May I assume you are refering to Burbank 2005? :rommie:

I liked it when Lucy reminded people she usually leaves once the wig comes off. I'll need to find THAT con! ;)

Ahah! Found it already!

wished they would come to the dallas area for con. I get really air sick when I fly and the teleporters are'nt invented yet so what can I do.

Oh how I wish I could access those commentaries... Alas the UK edition DVD's have nothing :( All the more reason to thank you JanewayRulz for giving some insight into what I've missed.
This episode is a particular favourite, as is the case for many fans. It's beautifully shot and brings together wonderfully some of the themes of the show as well as giving a little foreshadowy glimpse of what's to come for our hero. Most of the elements are there that made me fall in love with the show and those characters and I think you're right that the actors love those characters too.
I rewatched The Debt(s) tonight. Must re-read your recap but these are the kinds of episodes I wish people would view to help revise opinions of the show. Yeah there were times it revelled in it's cheesiness and some beyond wooden acting but at other times it was just epic storytelling and pretty compelling. And I can't believe that we got to have those two women have the relationship they did - no matter the reading of it - driving the story for the entire run. Without steady 'boyfriends' or rescue.

I think Xena's secret was that it appealed to a wide audience, there were eps you'd let your kids watch and eps you wouldn't. there was comedy, tragedy, action, romance. People may have initially tuned in to see a statuesque beautiful woman in tight leather beating up men and jumping into the hot tub with her petite feminine gal pal
but they then stayed for the characters and drama;)

Strangely enough, Xena is like a well planned dinner party.

Wonderful aperitif drinks, then appetizers, then 1st course, followed by a salad course, then 3rd course with entree followed by delectable side dishes which you've never heard of much less tasted, then a sorbet followed by a cheese course before they bring in not one but two desert courses. All of the above peppered with appropriate wines. (Yes, I did eat such a dinner once, and actually left out the soup and 2nd appetizer courses. The darned thing lasted 5 hours!)

"...People may have initially tuned in to see a statuesque beautiful woman in tight leather beating up men..."

I hate to say it, but THIS is one of the reasons I STAYED AWAY from Xena for so long. I had absolutely no interest in watching (what I thought) was just a sword and sorcery version of Baywatch.

"....stayed for the characters and drama..."

I am so often blown AWAY by this aspect of the show! This is the reason I stepped into the Xena verse in the first place, because of the promise of such a story line. Sure, the campy youtube vids on line also encouraged me that it WASN'T all doom and gloom... who needs 140 eps of "Lifetime channel" afterall?

But it was the story line absolutely grabbed me, and the sissyphian journey our heroine found herself on... as Tarnetino said "always paying 10 cents on the dollar"... knowing that NO MATTER WHAT GOOD SHE DID in the future, it would never make up for the EVIL she HAD done in the past.

And of course it was that relationship with Gabrielle, and how BOTH women changed because of it that was so intriguing. "Are they or aren't they (lovers)" may have been titillating for the audience, but what wasn't in dispute was "do they or don't they (love each other)" was never in doubt.

I have to say... I chuckle at most Xena fanfic, because most of it is primarily centered on their sexual relationship. I laugh because after 140 eps and what... 5-6? kisses, the TV SERIES shows us their love more clearly than any of the sexually charged internet fanfics can even hope to proclaim.

I feel so guilty about not getting on with the next "aside", but real life does rear its head once in a while.

Aside #6 (Act III)

Again, its fun listening to the trio discuss or in some cases "talk over" each other as they watch the show, especially as Lucy continues to bring the irreverant light hearted commentary to the fore.

As Julius is trying to convince Xena of his sincerity in rewriting history/tampering with the loom of the fates, so he AND she can become Emperor and Empress of the WORLD... Lucy interjects... "Okay, carry on then!" Later, as Xena runs down the stairs to lift Gabrielle up from the cross, we see a very perturbed Caesar watch from behind, and Lucy adds, "Ohhhh THAT doesn't look good for YOU, Xena."

But just when you think Lucy's not taking it seriously, she blindsides you with insight as when Renee admitted how strange it felt for Gabrielle to become so subservient to the "Xena Character" after she was freed from the cross.(When Gabrielle kept looking down, not looking at her rescuer as she was thanking the "Empress" for saving her life.)

(Paraphrasing Lucy) "Except now Xena's becoming more like the Xena we know... before I was surprised at how I was playing her... she was complicit with Caesar's actions... don't get me wrong, I liked it.. it worked for me..."

I have admitted earlier that "it worked for me too"... seeing the Xena character evolve in the very brief time she's been exposed to Gabrielle... was almost like watching their relationship of last 6 seasons in time lapsed 1 episode fashion.

But nothing happens in a vacuum... and just as Xena has been affected by Gabrielle, so has the Playwright been affected by the Empress.

What was impressive to me, as I watched the woman in a rag dress who at first couldn't bring herself to LOOK into the eyes of THE EMPRESS OF ROME... watch this same woman actually find the courage in her heart (after Xena calls her a friend and hugs her repeatedly) to not only look up at said EMPRESS as she walked away... but to CALL her by NAME.

Gabrielle: "Xena... Xena! (Xena finally stops walking, but doesn't turn back quite yet) When I thought I was going to die... it all became so clear.

(And the woman who dreams of finding someone who can look so deeply into her soul that they can find something worth dying for, admits a great truth.)

Gabrielle: "My life is empty, despite my success. I write about love, but I've never felt it before."

As Gabrielle is led away, we see Xena and Caesar give each other the once over and you can't help but wonder what's going through HIS mind. Its pretty obvious from her face, what's going through Xena's mind! :klingon:

Episode # 133 Season 6 #18 "When Fates Collide"

ACT III continues:

Caesar walks into his bedchambers, and finds a statuesque brunette waiting for him on his bed. She's lightly stroking her leg as she says...

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_974.jpg

Alti: "Your wife freed me."

Julius Caesar: "Of course. You showed Xena visions of her former life."

(Why doesn't Alti wonder about HER former life too? Afterall, she did glimpse it when she watched Xena's visions)

Alti: "She'll never play the good little Empress now.
[Chuckles] You need a much more loyal partner... Caesar."

He gets into her face.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_979.jpg

Julius Caesar: "I don't trust you... Alti."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_981.jpg

Alti: "I love Rome just as much as you do, Caesar. And those visions? Made my abilities so much stronger."
JC: "Prove it. I pardoned that playwright, Gabrielle. Find
her. Kill her."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_256cd.htm

****

We see Gabrielle galloping her horse through the Roman countryside. The soldiers who escorted her away from the courtyard obviously let her go home first and change out of the rag dress and into something more comfortable for traveling.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_986.jpg

But wait... she IS still wearing something from the crucifixion courtyard. Around her shoulders is that purple/bluegreen velvet wrap the Empress laid there to protect the playwright's dignity.

Gabrielle: "Whoa! [Yells] No!"

That dignity doesn't last for long, when an unseen hand snatches her up off the horse and tosses her like so much garbage onto the ground.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_260cd.htm

The hand may be unseen, but the source of the disturbance is quickly seen...

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1001.jpg

Now THAT face would give ME nightmares, if it was staring down at me! Gabrielle is no fool, and quickly tries to crawl away from her newest enemy, but Alti catches up with her easily, throttling the playwright as easily as she did Xena in the prison.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1014.jpg

Alti: [Laughs at Gabrielle as she tries to squirm out of her grasp] "Aw such a pretty girl, huh? Do you know what a
fate worse than death
means? Dying before you get a chance to know who you really are."

And then the visions start as Gabrielle kneels helplessly in front of the woman towering 9 inches over her.

[We see Gabrielle entrating Xena in her Potadiean home.
Gabrielle: "I'm not cut out for this village life. I was born to do so much more."
We see Gabrielle being helped up onto Argo for the first time.
We see Gabrielle covered in mud and trussed for the spit scream as a tube is forced into her mouth.

Gabrielle: "Xena-a-a-a-a!"
We see two hands intertwine...
Xena: "Even in death, Gabrielle... I will never leave you."
We see many things, Gabrielle and Xena crawling towards each other after defeating Alti in India,

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1035.jpg

we see Alti beating Gabrielle's neck with a staff during the same encounter.

We also see Indragit throttling Gabrielle in India...

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1056.jpg

We see Xena and Gabrielle laughing uproariously and hugging at the end of the dance of the Muses... and we see her being crucified on a snowy mountainside.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1060.jpg

Alti is so caught up in everything Gabrielle sees in her past life... that the High Priestess misses something even more important in the present.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1085.jpg ]

The Warrior Empress has ARRIVED!

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_269cd.htm

And she's NOT pleased with what she sees!

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1079.jpg

LOOK at those eyes!

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1077.jpg

Xena: "Alti-i-i-i-i!

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1081.jpg

Xena: Yah-h-h-h!

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1084.jpg

(And she gallops her warhorse towards the two women, taking aim with her bow as she flies down the hillside)

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1091.jpg

Xena manages to drive Alti off, and dismounts to run to Gabrielle's side. Gabrielle is still kneeling, frozen in the rush iof images still flodding her mind from Alti's contact. Her nose is bleeding as Xena cups her face and tries to wake her up.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1118.jpg

Xena: Gabrielle come on, get up.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1122.jpg

Xena: Gabrielle... what has she done to you?

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1123.jpg

Xena: Alti-i-i-i-i-i!"

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1142.jpg

And from far away, still unseen, comes a response.

Alti: "My powers have evolved, Xena. That glimpse into your soul showed me the other world."

Xena continues to turn right, left, trying to triangulate upon that hated voice.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1157.jpg

Xena:
"Alti-- "
Alti: "I saw just how strong I've become and, thanks to you, I'm just hitting my stride."
Xena: "This isn't about you, Alti!"
Alti: "Oh, yes it is! It's all about me and what I know!

FINALLY Xena has figured out where Alti is...

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1163.jpg

Alti: Your story will end with your playwright unable to save her `Fallen Angel'." [Laughs]

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1166.jpg

An Alti, high upon a hill, leaps into the air and is flying towards Xena with increasing speed. Xena, not content to wait for her enemy to arrive, leaps into the air and begins the battle royale, kicking Alti from the sky.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1184.jpg

Xena: "This is where your memories end, Alti.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_284rcd.htm

And she throws a right cross at Alti's chin, not only knocking her sensless but more importatnly breaking her psychic hold on Gabrielle. Gabrielle's no longer kneeling frozen in the field... she's keeled over as if Xena had knocked HER lights out!

Xena: (To Alti)Get up! Get up!"

Suddenly a Roman phalanx comes charging over the hill at Xena. Xena punches Alti once more before turning to meet her newest foes. One... Two... Three guards attack and she deftly handles each in turn, and actually rips the sword from the hand of the third Roman to then turn it on him.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_291cd.htm

Suddenly we see a style reminscent of OUR Xena as she blocks sword strikes from behind, and impales men who she's already physically taken down and catches a spear thrown at her before turning to her own advantage. Needless to say, many good Roman soldiers died this day.

Gabrielle is off to the side when suddenly two Romans capture her, and Xena sees it.

Xena: "No-o-o-o-o!"

Caesar and Brutus arrive by chariot, surrounded by archers. Before Xena can run to Gabrielle, the archers fire, striking first her right shoulder, and then her left thigh.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1315.jpg

Julius Caesar: (to his team of horses) "Whoa-a-a-a."

Neo: (AKA Joxer arrives and frightens off Gabrielle's captors by taking charge of the prisoner) "You! Watch that sling! Back in line!"

Gabrielle has eyes only for the woman being overwhelmed by soldiers in front of her.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_294cd.htm

Gabrielle: "Xena!"
Neo:
(The Empress' faithful servant struggles to hold the playwright back) "No! No! You can't help her... but I can help you."
Julius Caesar:
"You couldn't let it go... couldja?"

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_298cd.htm

Again... I advise you to WATCH the show. Xena IS speaking to/taunting Caesar, but all the while her eyes keep going to her right, where Neo has Gabrielle under control. Caesar doesn't even notice her preoccupation.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1370.jpg

Xena: "You betrayed me again, Caesar. No matter what life you live, you'll always be scum! Not even the Fates could change that."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc_2/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_1339.jpg

Julius Caesar: "Your death will not be in vain, Xena, because you'll always hold a special place in Rome's heart amongst Caesar's conquered."

Xena: [Spits at him, as he simply leans back to avoid it.]

They break off the ends of her arrows, tie her feet with rope, and hand the other end to a mounted soldier before dragging her all the way back to Rome.

Soldier: "Hyah! Hah! Yah! Yah!"

Alti: [Laughs]

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_304cd.htm

Needless to say... Caesar is well pleased.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_305cd.htm
