Any Xena:WP fans on the boards?

Moby dick with renee O'connor tonight on the sy fy channel.
all so bsg on bbca don't forget.

Oh... I'm too greedy when it comes to BSG... I have those on DVD when I need my Admiral/President fix! (Fav scene is their good bye kiss before Laura boards the ship and flies to the cylon base ship. Apollo and Starbuck are "trying" not to look... and you "know" the kids in them are going... euwwwweeee.. get a room for godz sake!"

Have you noticed that all three of Lucy's hit tv shows have a polythesitic religion background? Xena... BSG and Spartacus all believe in a pantheon of gods.. well, except the cylons. ;)

Have you caught that webseries "Ark" yet on hulu? Good stuff and (unfortunately) doesn't take long.

IIRC, the BSG Miniseries was a 2 nightevent, 2 hours per night. I COULD be wrong, since IT is not my fav and I don't rewatch it.

I was "so-so" BSG fan with the miniseries...but I became a RABID BSG fan with the first ep of season 1.. "33".

I was hooked the moment I saw #6 THANK you. all so that is what drew me xena was lucy in that leather armor.

:drool::drool::drool::drool: I am so into women in power thank you so much xena!!

Don't forget Lucy on the X-files. My favourite scene in BSG is Adama almost goading Tigh into killing him following Duala's suicide, my favourite ep is the Starbuck tour-de-force Scar and my favourite moment is when the Galactica makes her final jump, passing battered and bleeding over the surface of the moon and coming upon our beautiful Earth, you recognise Africa and realise humanity has found it's home at last, Galactica has performed on last service for her crew:techman:

I never got into X files... that darned tv reception thing affected my viewing for years, until the small satellite dishes came out.

LOVED BSG... sigh.

So, was Lucy a baddie on Xfiles? Need I ask?

I loved her comment on a youtube con that her son was "ashamed" of his mother because she was always the "bad guy".

I don't think we ever found out if her character was good or bad (or whether she survived or not?), I think her recurring role was cut short due to her pregnancy

I looked for her on youtube, and found this interview which included a clip from the TV Guide.

I plan on getting to "When Fates Collide" soon, but with this one I have an embarrassment of youtube riches. "The last Centaur" had one not so great yt vid as far as I could see, while WFC has about 3/4's a of a trillion. (That might be a slight exageration. ;) )

Anyway, I'm still trying to decide which ones will illustrate our next review/recap.

To hold you over until then... a few things to remind you of eps/themes that WFC bookend.

Episode # 133 Season 6 #18 "When Fates Collide"

[TEASER]

FLASHBACK # 1:

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_005.jpg

(We see a woman being raised high on a cross, a beach in the background. She bounces as the cross slams into place. She's hanging with her wrists tied to the cross beam)

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_006.jpg

Young Xena: [Spits at her captor!]
Young Julius Caesar: "Goodbye, Xena." (He turns to walk away, and tells the centurion standing with the very large sldge hammer...) "Break her legs."
Young Xena: [She screams as the centurion follows his orders]

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_013.jpg

FLASHBACK #1 PAUSES.

Julius Caesar's Voice: "Stop. Back it up. Now. There. Let's take a look
at that."

FLASHBACK #2:

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_018.jpg

A pretty amazing looking young woman in a red dress is crawling towards a young Julius Caesar.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_002cd.htm

Young Xena: "Why don't you and I work together?"
Young Julius Caesar: "So... you wanna help me conquer the world."
Young Xena: "Why not? We'd make an unstoppable team....I'd love to join forces with you."
Young Julius Caesar: "Some enemies are... harder... than others."
Young Xena: "Oh, I count on it." (And she closes in for a very sensual kiss)

FLASHBACK #2 PAUSES

Julius Caesar's Voice: "Much better."

And we see his hands in a bowl of water, holding the thread of his life. The toga clad Former Emperor turns and looks over his shoulder at the three females watching him. From his position, you can be forgiven if you think the red on the front of the toga is decoration. He continues to talk to his captive audience.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_009cd.htm

Julius Caesar "It's ironic, isn't it? How a single decision can change the entire path of one's destiny. Had I not betrayed Xena, I'd be ruling Rome today. Instead, I get stabbed in the back by my good friend, Brutus.. while Xena gets to ride off into the sunset with her girlfriend... hardly a fitting end for Julius Caesar."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_016cd.htm

Finally the FATES speak. We see the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone are chained to a pillar in their temple, as Julius stands before their unguarded loom of Fate.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_034.jpg

Clotho: "You cannot change your fate... "
Lachesis's Voice: "... once it has been chosen."
Atropos: "Unchain us now and accept your destiny."

Julius Caesar: (THIS is Caesar! He can do WHATEVER he wants!!!) "Let me tell you... about my destiny. With Hades out of the picture, underworld security's become rather, uh...lax, which brings me to this defining Xena moment." (He looks once again at the thread of his life, like its a strip of super 8 film) "Mysterious...romantic... good lighting."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_059.jpg

(He reaches for the scissors hanging from the belt of the Fates and snips the thread before walking back to the loom and restringing it. As he stands before the loom, we see the multiple stab marks on the back of his Toga, and realize the red decoration on the front WASN'T decoration at all. It was more blood from his murder 28 years ago. As the Fates admonish him, we see the thread winding its way through the complex tapestry on the loom, finding its correct niche.)

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_019cd.htm

Atropo: "Tampering with the loom will alter the very fabric of life..."
Clotho: "... changing not only your destiny... "
Lachesis's Voice: "-- but that of countless others."

Julius Caesar: (Turns to snear at the Fates) "Oh, I'm counting on it."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_067.jpg

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Its a new day. We see Brutus walk briskly across the terrace to stand at Caesar's side. Caesar is standing at the top of the stairs leading to his fortess, the sandy courtyard lies below. He's speaking with a bureaucrat.

Julius Caesar: "That grain must be allocated. The people must eat."
Brutus: [Clears throat] "Caesar?"
Julius Caesar: (To the bureaucrat) "Excuse me. What news, Brutus?"

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_023cd.htm

Brutus: (He looks like the cat that swallowed the canary!) "The Chinese emissaries have arrived."
Julius Caesar: (He turns from the courtyard and starts to walk back towards the doors to the fortress.) "Ah-h-h-h... excellent. Lao Ma's peacemakers."
Brutus: "This visit is very important to us."
Julius Caesar: "Of course. And, as always, Brutus... I greatly appreciate your counsel [He laughs as he gives Brutus a man hug]-- my good friend. Now, escort them in."

But before Brutus can run and do his Master's bidding...

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_032cd.htm

Soldier's Voices: (SHOUT) "Open the gate! Take your positions!"

The gates open, and we see a figure dressed all in black, with golden armor decorating her chest and skirt, sitting atop a magnificent dark chocolate warhorse.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_092.jpg

Soldiers' Voices: "Get ready!"

Suddenly, she spurs the horse onward, galloping towards the men atop the stairs at the other end of the courtyard. Before she gets there, she does some very tricky flips on the horse, kicking aside many of the guards that stand between her and her goal.

Soldiers' Voices:"Oh, my head!" "Help me up."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_115.jpg

Before you know it, Brutus is drawing his sword but she has drawn HER Bow and sent two arrows flinging his way, tacking him to the wooden doors to the fortress while sparing Caesar completely.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_125.jpg

As the horse comes to an abrupt stop at the base of the stairs, she launches herself into the air with a DISTINCTIVE war cry, and lands on the middle of the steps.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_035rcd.htm

Caesar stares her down as she straightens up and simply saunters up the steps.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_036cd.htm

Once on level with him, she removes her helmet with its full face mask, and for once we see something besides her eyes.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_037cd.htm

As she walks closer, she simply SMILES, and in a throaty voice she acknowledges...

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_041cd.htm

Xena: "My Emperor."
Julius Caesar: "My Empress."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_143.jpg

Xena: [Giggles]

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_042cd.htm

Episode # 133 Season 6 #18 "When Fates Collide"

ACT ONE:

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_043cd.htm

Caesar and Xena are walking through their palace, arm in arm.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_044cd.htm

Julius Caesar: "Oh, I have some entertainment planned for my lady tonight."
Xena: (The Empress from Thrace is excited) "A new wrestler from Thrace?"
Julius Caesar: "No... a new play from Athens. I thought you'd appreciate a
taste of your own culture."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_154.jpg

Xena: (She is shamelessly flirting as she winks at him during this next exchange) "Oh-oh... more drivel from old men with tricky names. That was very thoughtful of you."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_047cd.htm

Enter Brutus, leading two Chinese ambassadors.
Brutus: "Emperor-- "

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_049cd.htm

Julius Caesar: "Ah-- honored emissaries."
Xena: "Huh well, the senate is meeting to vote on new weaponry for my men. I feel I should be there."
Julius Caesar: "Of course. Brutus, accompany her, please." (Brutus looks surprised, but turns on his heel and follows Xena out, leaving Caesar alone with the 2 Chinese emmisaries.)

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_175.jpg

Julius Caesar: "Representatives of Lao Ma, from the land of Ch'in, welcome. Now, what have you brought for me?"
Emissary 1: (Hands off his staff to his partner, and bows to Caesar, holding a scroll in his two hands, as he reverentially says...) "Directly from Lao Ma's hand."
Julius Caesar: (Glances briefly at the scroll before turning back to the 2 men) "Hm-m... Lao Ma's reputation for fairness is well-deserved. Rome accepts her offer of an alliance with Ch'in. Now, please, accept my offer of hospitality for the evening."

Suddenly, someone grabs both men by the scruff of their necks, and lifts them into thwe air where they dangle helplessly as blood runs from their mouths and ears, and visions flood their brain.

Emissaries: [Gasp as their minds are overtaken]
Julius Caesar: (Hisses) "May I introduce Alti... high priestess of Rome."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_196.jpg

Visions of explosions, of soldiers being tossed aside by psychic blasts, of mens hands being branded course through their brains until they finally stop moving and simply die. She tosses them to the ground as soon as they stop twitching.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_059cd.htm

Alti: "The pleasure is all mine." (She walks over to Caesar, almost dripping with sensuality as she relates her psychic experience with the Chinese.) "A lifetime of pain in one exquisite moment." [Laughs]

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_061cd.htm

Julius Caesar: "Xena's right. You are amibitious."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_062cd.htm

(And he needed XENA to tell him that?????)

Act One continues.

Act One continues.... eventually. ;)

This episode is so complex, and bookends so many different things, that rather than point them out as I go, I'm going to step back and acknowledge them in several "asides".

Like this one.

This ep began with a very famous season 2 scene... the crucifixion/leg breaking of Xena on the beach by Caesar from "Destiny".

But its another crucifixion episode, with that other force of nature... CALLISTO in season 4's "Ides of March" that will eventually play a huge role in this show.

In the audio commentary, Rob Tapert made several interesting points. The episode is set at the times of "The Debts", when Lao Ma was at her height. (He didn't say it, but I will... since Evil Xena never met Lao Ma or her former owner, or her son... then the evil Green Dragon probably wasn't in existence and therefore wouldn't have killed her.)

Rob said they (TPTB) thought it would be "fun" for the fans to think Lao Ma was still around, and it WAS for this one. ;)

Rob also noted that TPTB had different ideas for the "villains" in this ep, and even had ideas for people "on the other side" being involved... but the author K Fugate came back with ALTI... and, as they say, the rest is history.

As Fugate says herself in the dvd interviews (sorry guys, not on line, please consider buying the "older" dvds to pick them up.) when you consider the Xena universe, ALTI was the only one as concerned with POWER as Caesar, so it was an easy choice.

Lucy Lawless agreed with this idea during the commentary, calling the character "potent".

Fugate made a few other interesting points in her interview, some of which I agree with and yet a couple I don't... but we'll get to that later.

After watching 6 seasons of Xena on dvd and listening to the commentaries (both video & audio, since they sometimes DON'T agree!) I have to acknowledge a few funny observations... ones which both actresses have admitted in the past.

Lucy is NOT interested in the "blah, blah, blah" on the screen MOST of the time, and just wants to get ON with the story/to the point, while Renee really is the romantic of the two, and often simply revels in the process. That tendency is very apparent in their commentaries on this ep...as is the tendency for both Lucy and Renee to tease each other on their different viewpoints.

Anyway... getting back to bookends, we are about to be subtly introduced to yet another one.

Remember how Season 4's "Ides of March" ended? Our two "best friends" died on their crosses?

Remember how season 5 began?

"Fallen Angel" showed us both women being raised on high by their guardian angels in white, until the demons from the underworld attacked and Gabrielle was lost to hell. The green winged Archangels flew to Xena's rescue... and appeared to be willing to leave Gabrielle behind. That was when Xena walked to the edge of the mountain and simply threw herself off the cliff, to join Gabrielle in hell.

Lots of things happened, as you may recall, including Xena assuming Callisto's sins and becoming a demon herself. remember this exchange between the she-demon and the Archangel Gabrielle?

DemonXena: "Why not? Gabrielle, the love that we have, it's-it's stronger than Heaven or Hell. It transcends good or evil. It's an end in itself! Our souls are destined to be together. Gabrielle, you can't let me walk through Hell alone."

Until finally at the end of the episode the spirits of our two "best friends" were returned to their lifeless bodies lying on the altar in the abandoned temple.

Do you remember their first words to each other, after their resurrection? They were also the last words of the episode.

Gabrielle: "We're going to be together... for eternity."
Xena:
"Yeah."

http://mikex.me.uk/eps/fallen/pages/fallen_mq_446ati.htm

Ok... now its time to go and listen to that new play from Athens.

Episode # 133 Season 6 #18 "When Fates Collide"

ACT ONE continues:

We are looking at the Royal box, as the lovers on stage are finishing their last lines. Brutus is ASLEEP!

Caesar is yawning and looking around to see if anyone else is asleep. Alti isn't, down on the floor, but its OBVIOUS what she thinks of the play!

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_063cd.htm

While back in the Royal box... Xena is simply ENTHRALLED!

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_255.jpg

We look down onto the stage, its backdrop is ancient Rome, and to either side of the stage are huge fireplaces with the masques of comedy and tragedy. The two lovers are sitting atop what appears to be a familiar altar. Kneeling before the altar on our left is a woman with white wings, to her side is a masked demon. Kneeling to our right is a green winged man, and to his side is yet another masked demon.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_237.jpg

Actor: "The love we have is stronger than the Elysian fields or Tartarus."
Actress: "We're gonna be together for eternity."
Actor:
"And I wouldn't have it any other way."

[Applause from the audience, as the couple embraces]

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_064cd.htm

Applause isn't enough for our Empress, as she rises to give a standing ovation, followed quickly by her husband the emperor.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_257.jpg

An Emperor who is NOT going to like what he's about to hear!

Actor: "Let me introduce to you... the writer of `Fallen Angel', Greece's own... Gabrielle, the visionary voice of Athens."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_068rcd.htm

(Ladies and Gentlemen, this is one of SEVERAL scenes where words simply do NOT suffice to describe everything going on in this shot. BUY the dvds, GET HULU-PLUS and watch it online. CALL NETFLIX. Do it now. and NO! I do not get a kickback from every sale, nor do I get free dvds.)

Xena is standing, giving her all with applause, Caesar is trying Sooooo hard to be nonchalant, while watching Xena for ANY hint of recognition. Xena doesn't seem to recognize her, but if you thought she was enthralled by the play, WAIT until you see her become ensnared by the visionary voice of Athens.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_069cd.htm

Xena tosses her rose to the stage, among many others already littering it, and finally Gabrielle bends over and picks up a bouquet ...

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_071cd.htm

before turning to the Royal box and acknowleding its occupants.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_072cd.htm

Xena HAD begun clapping again before THAT happened...

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_272.jpg

but once Gabrielle looks at her, the clapping slows and simply stops.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_282.jpg

To be fair to Xena... its OBVIOUS she's not the only woman who was thunderstruck that night.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_285.jpg

It was with the greatest of effort, that Gabrielle was able to pull her gaze from the Empress of Rome,

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_074cd.htm

a wordless exchange that was not only of great interest to Caesar... but to Alti as well!

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_075cd.htm

Episode # 133 Season 6 #18 "When Fates Collide"

ACT ONE continues:

Its the after hours theater party, where the audience gets to shmooze with the actors and actresses... oh.. and that visionary voice of Athens. The Empress of Rome is chatting up the Playwright, drinks in hand.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_310.jpg

Gabrielle: [Chuckles, at what? Who knows, maybe a nervous response to being THIS close to an EMPRESS!]
Xena: (Quietly) "I found your play very moving."

Across the room, the snake that is Alti has crawled up next to Caesar.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_078cd.htm

Alti: "What do you suppose the Empress and the writer are discussing, hm-m? Horse-riding? Sword play?"
Brutus: "Emperor, I need to speak with you immediately."
Julius Caesar: (His eyes are GLUED onto Xena) "Really, Brutus, this isn't a good time."
Brutus: (An insistent little man, isn't he!) "Regarding Ch'in, and her emissaries."
Julius Caesar:
(Oh right, the two you had executed just before the night's "real" entertainment) "Ah yes, of course." (With impeccable manners, he turns back to Alti) "Excuse me."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_088cd.htm

Xena: "What inspires you?"
Gabrielle: "It's like the words come from somewhere else. I just write them down. But you, Empress, all of Rome talks about you. The country thrives. The people adore you. They say that the army would follow you through the gates of Hades."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_086cd.htm

Xena: (She's clearly embarrassed at this unexpected praise, and she looks surreptiously at Caesar in close talks with Brutus) "Well, everything has its price, Gabrielle."

Meanwhile, across the room...

Brutus: [Loud Whisper] "You ordered Lao Ma's emissaries killed?!"
Julius Caesar:
"Yes. Alti advised it."
Bru [Softly]: "Lao Ma will send assassins."
Julius Caesar: "Don't worry, Brutus. I know how to deal with assassins."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_088cd.htm

Xena: "In the third act, you had your hero throw himself over the cliff with no fear of dying... all for her. Do you really believe that kind of love exists?"

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_089cd.htm

Gabrielle: (Her eyes are GLOWING as she looks up into the Empress's face.) "That's what we all dream about, isn't it? Someone who looks so deeply into our soul that they'd find something worth dying for."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_091cd.htm

Julius Caesar: (Enter the third wheel, or rather the man with a monkey wrench, to slow this mutual admiration display.) "Excuse me." (To Gabrielle) "Your play was, uh... riveting. Well-done. Thank you." (Turns to his Empress) "The army's expecting us first thing in the morning."
(Gabrielle looks crestfallen at her apparent dismissal)

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_095cd.htm

Xena: (The Empress nods, then turns to pour her charm yet again on the playwright.) "Thank you, Gabrielle, for honoring Rome with your play. Good night."
Julius Caesar: (As he leads his wife away, he inquires solicitously) "Did you enjoy the evening?"

We don't hear her response... but we see Gabrielle's eyes fixated on the retreating figure. As the green eyes look up and down, I'd lay odds she's NOT looking at Caesar!

Episode # 133 Season 6 #18 "When Fates Collide"

ACT ONE continues:

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_099cd.htm

We are in Caesar and Xena's bedchambers. Shimmering bits of drapery divide the room. Xena is in her 1 shoulder sleeping gown, and is aimlessly braiding her long hair. Caesar is probing for any information that she recalls who Gabrielle truly is.

Julius Caesar: "Tell me, what did you and that playwright talk about?"
Xena: (Her eyes are focused elsewhere, and she doesn't realize the danger in her words.) "Her work, her life. She interests me."
Julius Caesar: "Really?" (He moves close, an begins to kiss her shoulder)

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_101cd.htm

Julius Caesar: "It's been a long time."

(Oh my! So things were getting cool even BEFORE Gabrielle entered from stage left?)

Xena: (She simply pats his hand, there's no recirpocating passion) "It's been a long day."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_102cd.htm

Julius knows when he's not wanted, and turns to pick up a scroll before he quits the bedchamber)

Xena: (Hmmm, a little TOO possessive, considering your LAST comment!) "Where're you going?"

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_104cd.htm

Julius Caesar: "Well... since I'm not needed here... (He waggles the scrolled parchment) "... there's a little matter I must discusss with Brutus."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_105cd.htm

Caesar leaves, and if all you do is read the whoosh transcipt, you are going to be soooooo confused, because one of the most interesting scenes is about to play out, without a single word of dialogue!

You can get the idea from this vid... the appropriate section is 0:32 seconds to 0:52 seconds.

Oh... and even THIS heterosexual can seewhat's going on. :alienblush:

Xena is alone in her chambers on a hot Roman night. She walks out onto her balcony for some cooler air, and leans her elbows onto the railing as she glances around. At first... she doesn't see the woman who's just walked out on the balcony across the road from her.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_107cd.htm

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_108cd.htm

When she suddenly SEES the blonde with the sheet wrapped around her torso... this courageous woman whom the Roman army would follow through the gates of hades... jumps BACK into the shadows and presses herself against the wall so as not to be seen.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_110cd.htm

But then, for reasons known only to Xena... she steps out of the shadows, and walks back to the railing. The blonde woman across the courtyard still hasn't noticed who's balcony is across from her own.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_111cd.htm

As she dips her head and studies the railing, you wonder just what is occupying her thoughts so completely... until she looks up.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_112cd.htm

Does she realize yet, the danger she's in, as she looks at the wife of the Roman Emperor?

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_113cd.htm

Its painfully obvious that Xena doesn't!

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_385.jpg

Gabrielle remembers her station, nods slightly to the Empress and then turns to walk off her balcony, back into her rooms. Poor Xena doesn't even have a moment to savor their nonverbal encounter, before a noxious personality decides to interfere.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_116cd.htm

Alti: "I had the most interesting vision tonight... of you and
the writer?" (She's pointing to the empty balcony across the courtyard)
Xena: (The lovesick woman is gone and we are in FULL EMPRESS XENA mode once again as she hisses...) "You take liberties, Alti."
Alti: "Really?" (She is sooo unimpressed. Her mistake.)
Xena: "The high priestess has no business in my bed chamber."

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_119cd.htm

Alti: (OUCH!) "Well, it's Caesar's bed chamber, too." (She walks closer, and motions to the empty balcony again) "I saw the way you looked at her tonight during the play." [Chuckles] "Wouldn't Caesar give anything to have you look at him that way."
(Interesting, no denial, no explanation... not that the Empress need explain herself to an employee, even if she is High Priestess of Rome!)
Xena: "What do you want?"
Alti: "You're in my way, Xena... and it's time I did something about it."
(I know... I said I wouldn't bring up commentary points in the recap... but I LOVED Lucy Lawless at this moment when she said... "Oh Alti... will you NEVER learn? :rommie: )

And so... the first "real" fight occurs in the ep... as Xena and Alti go mano y mano on one another, flipping around the small space of the balcony.

Finally, Alti achieves what she wants... her hands on Xena's throat...

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_433.jpg

Alti: "I can see into your soul, Xena... where you've been and where you're going.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_434.jpg

And as she drains Xena's memories, we see scenes NOT from the Empress' life, but scenes from the Warrior Princess' life.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_469.jpg

Alti: I have that power and I will destroy you. Can you feel the pain and terror in your soul?

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_458.jpg

Alti: Secreting its blackness... oozing inside of you? And know this, Xena... Caesar, Rome... all of it... will be mine."

ACT ONE ENDS! (Finally!)

Act Two of "When fates Collide" begins.... eventually. ;)

Aside #2

"Oh Alti... will you never learn?" Lucy Lawless to the TV set in WFC commentary.

The surprising thing... for we regular watchers of Xena, is that in act 1 ALTI quickly got the UPPER hand with Xena after a relatively short if acrobatic fight.

One of the things we have to remember, however, is that this woman ISN'T the Xena we know and love. Lucy even makes a comment during act 3 about how different she's playing the character, making her seem almost complicit with Caesar's actions... OH and YES... Lucy LIKED the difference.

(Not that she wants her complicit, but we need to see where she is... to appreciate where she ends up.)

Rob will eventually make a similar point, stating this Xena never evolved the same way re: her fighting style (she can catch spears but not arrows) and re: her response to "stimuli".

(Get your minds out of the gutter! I'm talking "pain" stimuli here... NOT Gabrielle! ;) )

And since this isn't "our" Xena... it isn't exactly our "Alti" either. This Alti didn't create "The Destroyer of Nations"... unless that person is Caesar. She never met up with Xena in "The Sin Trades", because Xena never went through THAT particular crisis of Faith. Interesting that Alti doesn't seem to be confused at the strange images she sees of Xena with limbs chopped off, or dead with limbs intact, much less recognize the future incarnation of herself when she cycles through Xena's visions while on that balcony.

Speaking of Balconies... Renee is such a romantic softie and Lucy is so pragmatic!

During the commentary, as the silent balcony scene begins Renee seems to sigh and says something like... "Nothing needs to be said" as the scene unfolds... to which, Lucy immediately offers her opinion... on the bluish gown she's wearing and bluish sheet Gabrielle has wrapped around herself before walking out on the balcony. (She didn't like them)

As funny as that sounded... the three doing commentary were even funnier during the "Xena shoots down Caesar's bedroom proposal" scene.

(Please recall... when I first saw this commentary 8 months ago... I did NOT know that Rob and Lucy were married!)

Anyway, after Xena shoots Caesar down and he walks away to chat up Brutus... Rob says, "I don't blame Caesar for betraying her, now." which makes Renee laugh out loud. Lucy is either a little slow on the uptake or too wrapped up in the beginning of the balcony scene sinces its a couple beats before she asks her husband (the Executive Producer of Xena), "Why, for withholding his conjugals?" and he replies, "Yes!"

I think Renee liked being the third wheel in that conversation.

Now that I realize who he is... I think its hilarious too!

:rommie:

When I relistened to the end of act 1... I realized I forgot something funny, which made me realize I forgot something else, which made me realize.... well... that this episode is more complex than you realize at first blush.

The "funny" thing I forgot was Lucy's take on Alti's interruption of the famed "balcony" scene.

"I saw the way you looked at her tonight during the play. "Wouldn't Caesar give anything to have you look at him that way."

Lucy laughed and proclaimed Alti's "gaydar" was on high alert, and for a minute it sounded like she was going to have to explain the term to Renee. (Please, Renee, You live and work in California!)

I keep mentioning the pragmatic Lucy vs romantic Renee, but I neglect to mention things like this that remind us Lucy isn't blind to the story between the action scenes. In fact, back in early act 1 when Xena is seeing Gabrielle for the first time, Lucy comments on the "smouldering looks" going on. Renee seems to dispute it, but I think because by the time it was mentioned the scene had progressed to a safer (less smouldering) interaction between the characters when they were talking for the first time.

During that first conversation, Lucy pointed out how Xena was responding to Gabrielle on a subconscious level... and "I just like you"/"I feel comfortable with you" level, without understanding why it was so.

This ISN"T our Xena.

She wasn't betrayed by Caesar, nor loved/rescued by M'Lia. She wasn't rescued/loved by Lao Ma. She wasn't loved/"betrayed" by Akemi. She didn't meet, become enamored of Cyane, nor was she "gifted" with a Shamanesse apprentice by Alti.

In this "world"... it would be our fictional Xena who would need instruction in the definition of "Gaydar"... rather than our real life Renee.

Such confusion as to her immediate "I Just like you"/"I'm confortable with you" feelings on Xena's part, puts another layer of meaning on the silent exchange between balconies that night... and explains WHY Xena was so dense when it came to Caesar's eventual response.

Episode # 133 Season 6 #18 "When Fates Collide"

ACT Two begins.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_121cd.htm

Xena is at Alti's mercy... the Shamaness' hand is around her neck, draining her life force as easily as she drained it from Lao Ma's emmisaries earlier that evening. Just as you think Xena is about to die someone breaks the connection and she falls away from the evil woman.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_492.jpg

Julius Caesar: "XENA!" (He looks so sincere as he reaches his hand down to her!) "Are you all right?"

(After pulling Xena off the floor, we turn to see BRUTUS had the MUCH TALLER Alti in an arm lock!) http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_503.jpg

Julius Caesar: "Tell me, Alti-- is there a single reason I shouldn't kill you right now?"

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_502.jpg

Xena: (You KNOW you are in trouble when THAT voice drops an octave!) "Yes-- because I wanna do it... in the forum before the public"

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_513.jpg

Julius Caesar: "Of course. Brutus, have her interrogated. There may be others involved. And make sure you warn the guards about her powers." (Alti looks soooo smug when Brutus waltzes her out of the royal bedchambers)

And then yet another GREAT scene plays out WORDLESSLY. :p

Have I mentioned yet that you can watch this on Huluplus if you don't netflix and can't but the series?

Brutus has just hustled the shamaness away, and the solicitous husband takes his wife in his arms. He's facing the balcony as Xena lays her head on his shoulder.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_527.jpg

When what to his wondering eyes doth appear... but a blonde playwright wrapped in nothing but a simple sheet and gazing into his own balcony.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_134cd.htm

As if THAT wasn't bad enough... Xena oblivious to the drama playing out behind her back, picks that moment to vacate the arms of her husband and walk silently away.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_528.jpg

And of course, before she has the good sense to tuern away... Gabrielle has seen it all.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_529.jpg

(Someday some one will have to explain to me the reason why the sheet is draped about Gabrielle differently in THIS scene vs the first between Gabby and Xena alone. ;) )

A new day has dawned in Rome, which can only mean one thing.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_136cd.htm

Xena enters her husband's office dressed to KILL and I don't mean with a sword! Brutus sweeps by her, without saying a word, leading a contingent of men away on some new mission.

Xena: (Her curiosity is piqued!) "Where is Brutus going with the royal guard?"

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_540.jpg

Julius Caesar: (He looks SO DAMNED sincere! If not outright apologetic!) "Oh, arresting that woman playwright.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_544.jpg

Julius Caesar: (He's busy writing in his scrolls, but delays long enough to look up at his purple velveted wife) "Alti confessed that she was an accomplice in her plan. Apparently, they were both working with assassins from Ch'in to destroy us. Hope you weren't too fond of her."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_550.jpg
http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_139cd.htm

Xena looks stunned at the news, before catching a clue as to the danger that is circling her world and shrugging as if the playwright means nothing.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_141cd.htm

Suddenly we see Brutus' Roman guards pulling a protesting blonde along the cooridors into the dungeon.

Gabrielle: "There must be a mistake! I've committed no crime against Caesar!"

What happens next wasn't planned by the episode's author, but was the brainchild of the Exec producer... Rob Tapert. Another Roman guard steps aside as the contingent flies past him, then turns his head as his eyes follow the blonde as she's lead deeper into the dungeon.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_558.jpg

Recognize him? He actually seems to follow them as the scene fades.

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_560.jpg

Episode # 133 Season 6 #18 "When Fates Collide"

ACT Two continues:

Yet another silent scene unfolds before us.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_148cd.htm

We watch as Gabrielle, now clad in the 2 piece rag dress we last saw in "Ides Of March" (You remember... Callisto in white, chakrams Xena in the back, rendering her a paraplegic), submits to the dungeon barber.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_149cd.htm

"Why"? you may ask, do they do this to the celebrated young playwright? What else can you do to a young woman to remind her she's at your mercy?

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_564.jpg

You take away her home grown golden crown of curls.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_148cd.htm

We are no longer in the cell, but are approaching it with Empress Xena, still garbed in royal purple. She's looking about furtively as a Roman Centurion leads her through the dungeon passageways.

Neo: "This is a great honor, Empress. You know, you once did a great favor for me."
(She's so distracted as she follows him that she barely looks at him as she nervously looks around.)
Xena: "Oh, I did?"
Neo: (He's so self effacing) "Mm-hm-m-- my youngest daughter was very ill, and you allowed your physician to treat her. You saved her life, you know."
(I love how in either reality, Joxer was gifted with a family)
Xena: "I'm pleased."
(She finally stops and looks up into his eyes. No hint of recognition passes between them as she breathes quietly...)

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_150cd.htm

The door to Gabrielle's cell opens, and the EMPRESS enters.

Xena: (To the prison barber, her voice drops an octave and perceptibly hardens) "Leave us."
(As he leaves, she turns to her guide, still standing in the doorway and her voice softens ever so slightly.)
Xena: "You, too."
Neo: (His honor rises) "I can't leave the prisoner unguarded."

Xena just slams the door closed behind her, and Neo/Joxer locks her in with the prisoner and walks away.

Its about time we talk about this "dress" the Warrior Empress is wearing! It isn't just royal purple. It's slit all the way up her right leg, a leg that was seen frequently when walking the hallways to this cell, and which we see again as she paces in front of Gabrielle.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_153cd.htm

Speaking of Gabrielle... its obvious she knows her "place", as she wisely stood up when Empress Xena came into the cell.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_152cd.htm

Gabrielle: (She is trying so hard to hold it together.) "Empress."

Last night they shmoozed at the after hours party for the theater, the celebrated playwrite and the Empress, both dressed impeccably. Today Xena still looks every inch the EMPRESS, but the playwrite's beautiful dress and hair and philosophical attitude have all been stolen from her.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_155cd.htm

Xena: (She gets down to business without preamble) "Caesar tells me that you are an assassin. Is this true?"

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_158cd.htm

Gabrielle: "An assassin? I've never harmed anyone in my life.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_157cd.htm

Gabrielle: (She shrugs at the absurdity of the question and the questioner) Why should you believe me instead of your husband?"

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_159cd.htm

Gabrielle realizes since she's getting killed soon anyway, why not sit down and make herself comfortable in the Empress' presence?

Xena: (The Empress crosses the cell towards Gabrielle) "I believe you."
Gabrielle: (The playwright is flummoxed by the answer as Xena sits next to her.) "Why?"

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_611.jpg

Xena: "You think that love is worth dying for. That's not exactly the path of an assassin."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_614.jpg

Gabrielle: [Sighs as she looks up to her left] "They're building crosses."

http://miroirdarc.com/xwp/s6/wfc/xena_s6_wfc_dArc_616.jpg

(Her eyes follow Gabrielle's as she too listens to the pounding of the nails)

Xena: "Yes...You can't have a crucifixion without crosses."
(Turns back to the woman on her left, STILL completely clueless to what may or may not have passed on the balcony last night.)
Xena: "Why would Caesar want you dead?"

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_166cd.htm

Gabrielle: (Equally clueless to the transgressions from the night before) "I don't know. I'm a playwrite. I live on a vineyard by the sea. I... I have a simple life. What possible threat could I be to Caesar?"

http://mikes-images.com/eps/wfc/pages/wfc_mq_168cd.htm

Xena: "I don't know... but I intend to find out. Guards?!"

(That familiar centurion's face immediately appears at the door, opening it to allow the Empress egress. She looks him in the eye and commands once more.)

Xena: "Neo... come with me."

As the door is shut once again upon the cell with the playwright, we see Gabrielle as she listens to the nailing of the crosses outside the dungeon walls.
