Any Xena:WP fans on the boards?

I think Legacy had my favourite Xena nickname, 'Ceaser's Thracian whore'?

As for Abyss, well, we'll talk more about it as you go through your summary but once again, how did anyone ever think this was a kids show?

On Voyager we have people who count how many times they say "47", and how many shuttles they've lost.

I wish someone could tell me... not how many she's KILLED, but just how many men have had their THROAT CUT by this woman.

Children's show my... aching back.

:wtf:

ETA I'm working tonight, so won't get much further on the review.

Episode 118 season 6 #6 "Abyss"

ACT I

The two are paddling down the river, searching for “the lost boys”.

Gabrielle: "Virgil! Virgil!"
Xena:
"If they made it this far, they'd most likely keep to the river"
Gabrielle: "That's if they made it, Xena."
Xena: "Gabrielle "
Gabrielle: (Getting more frantic) "Virgil! ... I don't know what's wrong with me."
Xena: (The Warrior Psychotherapist is in, 5 cents please.) "You're still condemning yourself for killing that boy in the desert."
Gabrielle: (Glances back, literally and figuratively) "I condemn myself for his father's sake."
Xena: (Reorients the Bard to the facts on the ground) "Korah's father forgave you. So would anyone with enough wisdom and experience to… "
Gabrielle: [Interrupts] "… to know what? ‘These things happen?’ "
Xena: (Sad but true) "Unfortunately, they do."
Gabrielle: (Xena’s not the only one who can refuse to be forgiven) "My reflexes are those of a warrior. I'm afraid my judgment's not. I think that's a bad combination." (Turns back to her mission at hand) "Virgil! Virgil!"

The two friends continue down the river until they find the remnants of the "lost boys'" canoe, and hear the waterfall off in the distance. Meanwhile, Virgil tries to run away from the cannibal camp and his friend on the spit, but is tripped up by yet another trap set by the cannibals. This time its HIM that's carried tinto camp like the prize turkey at Thanksgiving.

Gabrielle keeps ruminating on the death in the desert.

Gabrielle: "Xena, if I had listened to my heart-- do you think that boy would still be alive?"
Xena: "You did listen to your heart. You thought he was going to kill me. Your heart said to protect me. Anyway, a trained warrior would never have ridden up behind me knowing it could have been perceived as an attack."
Gabrielle: "Are you saying that he sent a boy to do a man's job?"
Xena: (Looking at the surface of the water surrounding their canoe for more than a little concern) "I'm saying I'm glad I can trust you with my life, especially right now."
[Fight erupts as two spears come up from the bottom of the canoe, and a savage rises out of the river on either side of the canoe. Xena knocks out the one on their starboard side while Gabby uses the port side savage as a knockabout doll to vent her frustrations upon using her trusty paddle ]
Xena: "Head for shore!" (You DON'T have to tell her twice!)

The girls abandon their canoe (recall the waterfall was downstream, and they would have been forced ashore soon anyway) and are quickly accosted by more savages. 3 on Xena and 2 on Gabrielle seemed like good odds until they started mimicking the bacchae and took bites out of Xena's neck and Gabrielle's leg. Gabrielle had her second savage on the ground, but before she could deliver the killing blow she saw desert boy Korah cowering before her and HESITATED!

He didn't hesitate as she plunged his knife into her side. :scream: Gabrielle tries to pull the knife free when she's picked up by the savage. He runs her back to the side of the river while she cries out for Xena before being unceremoniously tossed into the raging flood. Xena hears her cry, dispatches her last savage and then runs to the riverbank where she tosses the last savage aside before diving into the flood.

Xena: "Gabrielle!"

Yeah, The Abyss is an ep which puts our heroes/heroines in peril and just NEVER lets up. Possibly it's necessary because it puts Gabby in a life and death situatuion where she realises that sometimes she has to kill or be killed.

I'm sure if you hit the Xena boards someone must have totalled up kills/sex for all the characters, Xena's must run into the hundreds on both counts.

Episode 118 season 6 #6 "Abyss"

ACT II

Xena is being carried downstream in the raging river, calling for Gabrielle as she goes. Gabby is being swept near to the waterfall when her foot catches on an underwater vine/branch and she's pulled 10 feet under. (I know, I know... suspension of belief here... but not as bad as believing Xena can walk to Siberia and back when she's pregnant!)

Xena starts diving under the water to find her friend, and instead finds partial skeletons of other river victims. During her final dive, she sheds that darkbrown coat I love and finally finds Gabrielle. Lucky for Xena, Gabby must have shed HER rustcolored coat (that I also love) just before she arrived, making her easier to pull to the surface. Also, lucky for Xena, there just happens to be a cave mouth at the river's edge, just before the waterfall. Xena swims/pulls Gabrielle there and tries to revive her. Unlike "Is there a Doctor in the house"... its actually quite easy this time.

Xena: (She swims to the cave mouth, pulling Gabby behind her) "Hang on, Gabrielle! [Grunts as she pulls Gabby half out of the water and places her on a rock where she starts gently slapping her face] Gabrielle? Come on, Gabrielle!"
Gabrielle: [Coughs and chokes which pleases Xena to no end as she kisses her forehead] "My side-- "
Xena: "Come on! Get up and let me take a look at that." (Gabrielle turns so Xena can check the right side of her abdomen) " Take it easy. Take it easy. "
Gabrielle: (Shivering in the cold) "Those things b-bit us-- like-like they wanted t-to eat us."
Xena: (Stating the obvious for her wounded friend) "They were cannibals, Gabrielle."
Gabrielle: "Cannibals? We have to tell Virgil." (Uh Gabby, I THINK he knows... remember when Xena said 'they were running for their lives' ?")
Xena: "First things first." (The art of physical exam... "Xrays? We don't need no stinking Xrays!) "Got a bit of blade stuck in your side. We need to get that out. All right, you ready?" (Gabrielle turns her head away and braces herself as Xena pulls her dagger from her belt.)
Gabrielle: "Uh-huh." [Screams]
Xena:
(Disassociates herself from the woman screaming under her knife as she keeps working and talking.) "I'm not going to let you get yourself killed because of your guilt, Gabrielle."
Gabrielle: "Just stop the lecture!" (Gabby now knows how Xena felt in "The Greater Good")
Xena: (The WP is actually starting to get a little panicked) "You can't keep seeing that boy's face every time you raise a weapon! You can't!"
Gabrielle:
(Her guilt is stronger than both her fear and her pain) "Uh! If I. if I ha-hadn't hesitated, then m-m-m!"
Xena: "Don't think about it any more." (She pulls the broken knife point from Gabrielle's side and tosses it away. Too bad she couldn't remove her friend's guilt as easily.) You're gonna have to conserve energy. I want you to get back into the cave as far as you can. Try to keep warm. I'll be right back."

Gabrielle is left to find her way into the watery cave, still bleeding from the wound in her side, as Xena swims back into the current, seeking an escape route. She tries to climb up the sheer rock face that borders the river at the head of the waterfall, but is denied by the savages on the cliff above tossing rocks down onto her head. She falls back into the raging river after a nasty knock to her skull.

Meanwhile... back at the Cannibal camp... the savages are examining Virgil to see if he's an acceptable morsel for tomorrow's dinner. They're still busy eating Hosef so Virgil is safe for the moment.

Xena is back at the cave, looking for Gabrielle. She finds her friend curled into a ball, on a moss covered boulder a few inches above the waterline. Xena slides up on the boulder and lifts Gabrielle's head onto her lap. It takes a few moments for Xena to realize that Gabrielle is hallucinating.

Gabrielle: "Hope?"
Xena: (She missed that first word!) "Did you say something?"
Gabrielle: [Whispers and reaches her hand up to touch Xena's cheek] "My baby. My baby. Is that you?"
Xena: [Whispers] "Yeah, it's me."
Gabrielle: [Whispers] "I love you. [Softly] I would never hurt you. You know that, don't you?"
Xena: (Xena's hand is holding Gabrielle's as she cries) "I know."
Gabrielle: [Whispers as she turns away from the woman holding her] "You're my child. You have to go. She'll hurt you. She'll take you away from me."
Xena: (FINALLY realizes Gabby is hallucinating, and about what she's hallucinating!) "You have to rest. You don't have to go anywhere."
Gabrielle:
[Whispers as she looks up once more] "You don't understand."
Xena: (Tears pouring down her face for so many reasons as she hugs Gabrielle close) "I do understand. I understand everything."

Meanwhile... back at the cannibal camp... Virgil is placed in the pantry, er, the jail with another prisoner, to wait for his turn on the rotissiere. There he meets a scawny little man who's avoided his own turn through judicious diet (anorexia) and exercise.

Virgil: "What kind of savages feed their captives like kings? Maybe they did understand me. Now that they know that I'm a friend of Xena." (Rubio reaches out and pinches Virgils butt, causing him to jump out of his skin) "What are you doing?!"
Rubio: "Breathing a sigh of relief."
Virgil: "About what?"
Rubio: "Your youthful zest for food and drink."
Virgil: "Oh, I get it. I'm the catch of the day."
Rubio: (JOXER LIVES!) "You were a little slow on the uptake, my friend, thinking all these goodies were because you knew some warrior named Zebra." [Snickers]
Virgil: "Xena! Her name is Xena, and she will come for me, you watch."

Such faith.

And for good reason!

It starts to rain, hard, and the river rises, which means the cave is flooding even more. Gabrielle's boulder initially kept her 3-4 inches above the waterline, but now its submerged. Gabrielle is alone, still curled into a ball and half submerged herself. Xena splashes back towards her, with coils of vine over her shoulder and the scene where subtext becomes main text is played out.

Xena: [Whispers to her friend as she sits her up] "Gabrielle Gabrielle here here. The time's come. We're getting you out of here, all right?"
Gabrielle: (She hasn't looked this cold since the crucifixion!) "Oh."
Xena:
"All right."
Gabrielle: (Shivers uncontrollably as Xena wraps the vine about her) "Xena, I have a... a last wish."
Xena: "I don't want to hear of it."
Gabrielle: "No-- I'm serious. You don't want to know?"
Xena: (Guilt DOES work on WP's!) "What is it, then?"
Gabrielle: (Still shivering) "I don't... want... to be buried... with... the Amazons."
Xena: (Did her job, listened to her friend and now plans to ignore the implications completely!) "All right. Well, in fifty years, when the time comes."
Gabrielle: (Green eyes look up into blue) "Xena... I wanna lie with you... with your family... in Amphipolis?"
Xena: (She stops ignoring implications, and stops wrapping vines as she looks at the dying woman before her) "What about your family?"
Gabrielle: "I love them, but I'm a part of you. I want it to be like that forever. I love you."
Xena: [Whispers] "OK."
Gabrielle: "This is all my fault."
Xena: (The war of the Guilts) "This is not your fault. This is not your fault. It's mine for setting you on a path you were never meant to walk"
Gabrielle: (Still shivering as Xena finishes making the vine hoist around her) "Any path is OK, Xena, as long as it's with you."
Xena: (Jaw is set, plan is laid, now all it takes is for someone to put it into action) "I'm setting you on a path to somewhere warm and dry."

Its night outside, and the rain is just POURING down. Xena is back at the cliffs we saw her try to climb during the day, before the savages drove her off. No savages this time, but the going is difficult as this time our Warrior Princess has Gabrielle tied to her back as she pulls herself up one hand hold at a time. Like season 1's "Altared States", we have the great iconic shot, we are at the top of the cliff and see one great hand come up and over the top, pulling herself and her load with a cry of will... but unlike that previous time we don't see Gabby scramble up and over her shoulder. No, Gabrielle is sick.. she's sick and cold and will die if something isn't done soon to save her. Xena lays her down on the top of the cliff as the rain pours down and the lightning flashes all around them.

Xena: "Hang on, Gabrielle." [Grunts as she crests the cliff]
Gabrielle: (Lying on the muddy ground) "It's cold. It's cold. Cold."
Xena: (Leans over her friend) "Gabrielle. Gabrielle. Listen, don't be afraid. Trust me."
(And then Xena stands up straight; lightning backlighting her, sees torches flickering in the distant trees, and gives her trademarked warrior cry before running away from Gabrielle to hide in the nearby boulders.)

Gabrielle: "Xena? Xena. Xena?" (The savages run uo and surround the bard shaking on the ground, then pick her up and carry her away) "No. No! Xena! Xena! Xena-a-a-a-a!" (Xena stays hidden, despite the cries of her best friend.)

ACT III

Have I mentioned the great photography seen in this series?

Gabrielle is being carried through the woods on the shoulders of the savages. Its the dead of night, but at least its stopped raining. During a lightning flash we briefly notice Xena plastered against a tree the crowd is passing, then we see her again as she takes a half step forward into a small pool of light. The "pool" is just large enough to illuminate her face/eyes as she tries to follow. "Tries" because these savages aren't stupid. These guys know there were 2 women in that canoe, and no way was the sick one climbing up that cliff on her own! Suddenly Xena is jumped from behind... which was really too bad for the guy who drew THAT job on the daily scouting roster. At least Xena now has a great looking boar's head/cloak to wear into the cannibal's camp so she will blend in with the locals.

Speaking of the camp, the jail's door is opened and a savage carries Gabrielle in and drops her at Virgil's feet.

Virgil: "Gabrielle! You're freezing. Give me that rug!"
Rubio:
(He tries to touch Gabrielle and his hand is batted away by Virgil) "Ow! (He's obviously a "glass half full" kind of guy!) You just gained more time. Women always retain more."
Gabrielle: (Awakens in Virgil's arms) "Who is that?"
Rubio: "That-- is Rubio. You may call me-- "
Virgil: "Shut up!" (To Gabrielle) "Where's Xena?"
Gabrielle: (Still shivering) "I don't know."
(Suddenly the door opens and a crowd of savages enter. They grab Gabrielle and place her on a nearby table.)
Virgil: "Don't hurt her. Take me. Take me."
Gabrielle: screams [as the witch doctor pours a fluid into her mouth from an old skull, then forces her mouth closed until she stops fighting and then swallows the liquid. She lays still as if passed out while the witch doctor says prayers over her and drops grains of something over her torso before turning to leave. Once they're all gone, Virgil runs up to the table and lifts Gabrielle into his arms once more as she regains consciousness]
Virgil: "They were trying to treat your wound."
Rubio: "These boys will do anything to save meat from going bad. No offense."
Virgil: "Maybe you should rest, Gabrielle... because if given half the chance, I promise you, I'm gonna get us out of here."
Gabrielle: [Whispers as she closes her eyes and lays back into his embrace] "Be ready when Xena comes."
Virgil: "I will."

Xena has been sneaking around the camp to check on their strengths etc. She decides her friends will be safe until morning, and goes back to the river to put a plan into action that is EASILY the most ambitious we've seen in a Xena ep.

All I can say is... its not as silly as (MAJOR SPOILERS FROM 33 YEARS AGO!!!!) Superman's plan to spin the world backwards and reverse time to save Lois Lane from the earthquake in the 1978 movie!

And to THINK she dared complain to Gabrielle that her sword wasn't to be used for making kindling!

Its the "next day", and Gabrielle is waking up in jail.

Virgil: "Yeah. Hey-- "
Gabrielle: [Gasps]
Virgil:
(He's cradling Gabrielle again) "... your fever's broken... but you're still weak."
Gabrielle: (Guilt returns) "Virgil, I'm so sorry."
Virgil: "For what?"
Gabrielle: (She realizes the true consequences of yesterday's mistake when fighting the savages) "I lost my nerve. That's how I got hurt. If I had just killed that cannibal who attacked me, then Xena and I would have saved you by now."
Virgil:
"Never apologize for having compassion, Gabrielle. That's one of the most beautiful things about you."
(Lets get real! This is JOXER'S son...He'll say anything to keep Gabrielle in the crook of his arm like she is right now. Unfortunately, it doesn't last long as the cannibals are back and they're looking for a female entree this time)
Virgil: "Wait, wait, wait, wait! Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait! Don't hurt her! Do not hurt her! Don't hurt her! Take me instead! Take! Me! Instead!"
Gabrielle:
"Virgil!" (Screams as she's pulled from the room)
Virgil: "Wait! Wait! Wait! Where are they taking her?! Where are they taking her?! No! Gabrie-e-e-e-e-elle! Gabrie-e-e-e-e-elle!"

The most impressive thing about this... isn't in the camp... its what happens down by the river. Xena is standing, looking over her handiwork when she suddenly hears Virgil's ANGUISHED CRIES...

Virgil's Voice: "Gabrie-e-e-e-e-elle! Gabrie-e-e-e-e-e-elle!"

...and she turns and runs towards them.Unfortunately she runs into 3 cannibals intent on having "seconds"... and as she fights them we see Gabrielle being tied to the spit and her skin being coated in mud. She's beyond unhappy.

She's downright frightened to death!

Gabrielle: "Xena-a-a-a-a! Xena-a-a-a-a!"

Episode 118 season 6 #6 "Abyss"

ACT IV:

Xena is fighting 3 cannibals intent on expanding their palate, while Gabrielle has been tied to a spit, coated in mud to prevent (?) carmelization of the skin during cooking, and has just had a tube shoved into her mouth to keep it open. Not sure what that's for... not sure I want to find out, but just before it gets shoved in Gabrielle lets loose one last desperate plea for help.

Gabrielle: XENAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!

One that's FINALLY answered by the whrrrrrrrrringgggggggg of a chakram!

Did I mention that the savages were considerate enough NOT to strip Gabrielle naked before tying her to the spit? Not only is she fully clothed, but she still has her boots on (WHEN do these women EVER take their boots off??? :rommie: ) AND more importantly still has her sais IN her boots! The chakram hits some spears, hits the rope binding Gabrielle to the spit then goes off to do other wonderous things before being caught by our WP.

Gabby uses her now free hand to remove the tube from her mouth and to finish untying herself from the spit. LOVED it when she took the "spit"/beam and used it to pummel the witch-doctor. :bolian:

Gabrielle, still coated head to toe in mud, finally meets up with Xena, and gets her instructions. Release Virgil and get to the horses. LOVED the incongruity of watching Little Gabrielle KICK DOWN the door to the jail, the same door  that kept Virgil at bay while she was screaming for her life. Hey... it "looked" good. Virgil finally get to be a hero as he takes on several Cannibals with two hammers?axes? and fights their way towards the horse pen. WHile Xena keeps the cannibals occupied with her chakram and her sword, Virgil and Rubio mount up, and Gabrielle hangs onto a horse taller than Argo as she calls Xena to flee. Those poor horses... THEY were caked in the mud that covered Gabrielle!

(The quartet has ridden to the cliffs overlooking the natural phenomenon formerly known as a "waterfall")
Xena: "Whoa... stand up"
Rubio: (Riding with Gabby) "Why are we stopping? We must keep moving!"
Gabrielle: (Sees the damn across the river, just above the waterfall, and smiles) "It looks like the cannibals weren't the only ones cooking something up."
Virgil: (Smiles as he's starting to get USED to these things from Xena!) "So, what's the plan?"
Xena:
"I'm going back."
Rubio: (He's not used to ANYTHING when it comes to this warrior) "Going back?"
Xena:
(NOBODY threatens to eat her "best friend" and lives to tell about it) "I'm going back to lead the cannibals around below the dam. Gabrielle and Virgil, I want you to stay here. When you see them in position, cut the vine."
(The vine is attached to a boulder suspended in mid air. When the vine is cut, the boulder will fall and displace key parts of the damn, collapsing it and allowing the water to flow freely)
Rubio: "What about me?"
Xena: "You take the horses and get outta here."
Rubio: "Ooh. Yeah." (Can do, Warrior Princess!)

Xena lures the tribe into the dry riverbed below the damn, and once there calls out for Gabrielle to cut the vine. Unfortunately for Xena, but fortunately for the dramatic tension in the story, several cannibals have found the contraption above the cliff and are investigating. Gabrielle and the unarmed Virgil are hiding as they approach the vines holding the boulders back.

Do you remember in season 4, how Xena wouldn't defend herself when they arrested her and took her to shark island? Do you remember how she finally started fighting again, when someone ELSE was in danger? And when she was tied up, in the bottom of a rat infested pit, it was GABRIELLE being in danger that literally roused her to great heights of derring do?

XENA is at the bottom of a cliff that was once a waterfall. In front of her is nearly the entire tribe of cannibals (less the 5 accosting Gabrielle and Virgil), and she's yelling for Gabrielle to rescue her by cutting that damned vine.

Those 5 cannibals didn't stand a ghost of a chance, as Gabrielle AND Virgil killed them all, one by one. She did it despite seeing Korah, the desert boy's face as she killed yet again. Eventually Gabrielle attacked that vine with the same gusto she attacked the men who threatened Xena's plan and Xena's life.

The boulder drops, the "keystone" to the damn is pulled and the damn/water cascades back down the cliff to where Xena and the cannibals are trapped.

Make that... "to where the cannibals are trapped" since Xena has just catapaulted herself across the "river" to a nearby cliff face and is hanging high above the "future" river level. She continues to hang there as the water reclaims its right to run, and the cannibals all drown within its depths.

DON'T EVER threaten Gabrielle when Xena is around!

The end is near, and thankfully Gabrielle has taken the time to not only wash off all the mud, but to wash her clothes as well. She's dry and clean as she comes to sit next to Xena. Xena is busy sharpening her sword as Rubio eats voraciously nearby.

Xena: (The sharpening stone is getting a workout!) "This sword's looking a little worse for wear. How you feeling?"
Gabrielle: "I feel better." (She sounds better.)
Xena: (Looks up to the top of Gabby's head) "I mean upstairs."
Gabrielle: "Xena, I did what I had to do. I will learn to live with my mistakes, no matter how terrible they may be, but that's the way."
Rubio:
(Mouth stuffed full of watermelon) "What way?"
Xena: (Can be so sweet when she wants to, and she wants to here.) "Who are you, anyway?"
Rubio: (Pulls himself up straight!) "I... am Rubio... but you may call me... "
Virgil: (Pats him on the shoulder) "We know."
Rubio: "... Rubio."

"35 Years Later..." after the theft of the Rheingold.

We come upon a small tavern, and follow a Warrior inside where we see two familiar women sharing a meal. Actually, we see one woman eating, the other gnawing an empty bone as she looks wistfully at her neighbor's plate.

Gabrielle: "What?" (She asks, smiling.)
Xena: (Waves the empty bone at Gabby's plate) "Ya gonna finish that?"
Gabrielle: (She nods as she continues to smile) "All of it."
Bartender's Voice:
(To the Warrior who's just entered) "A drink, sir?"
Xena: (Still fishing for some sympathy) "I thought the portions here were kind of small."
Gabrielle: (You can almost see the boundary chains come up around Gabby's plate as the Warrior princess looks at it, once again) "You're not getting mine."
Xena: (Since sympathy wasn't working, she tries logic) "Come on, Gabrielle. You're playing with your food."
Gabrielle: "No, I'm relishing it."
(The hairs on the back of her neck start to stand up, and Xena turns to see the Warrior at the other side of the bar is taking too much of an interest in their table.)
Xena: "You got a problem? I don't appreciate people staring at me while I'm eating."
Beowulf: (He crosses the bar to stand next to their table) "Are you Xena?"

http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net...Beowulf.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20130811070425

Xena: (Doesn't bother to look at him.) "Yeah, who wants to know?"
Beowulf: "My name is Beowulf."
Xena: "You got business with me, Beowulf?"
(He comes forward and sits a rusted piece of metal on the table between Xena and Gabrielle. It's two ravens, heads turned towards one another. Xena looks like she's been poleaxed.)
XENA: "I gotta talk to this man, Gabrielle."
(And she stands up to lead him away from their table so that "no-one" can hear the conversation.)

TEASER ENDS:

ACT I:

http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net...tlecard.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20130812081017

Still in the tavern, Xena finally finishes with Beowulf and returns to the table. She is NOT forthcoming about what just happened. Whatever it was, its obviously already taken a toll on the WP.

Xena: (To Beowulf)"All right."
Gabrielle: (Lifts up the raven lock and shows it to Xena as she returns to their table) "What's this about?"
Xena: (Ignores the lock, and the woman holding it, as she stares off into space) "Nothing."
Gabrielle: (Gabby is flummoxed as she looks at the WP and then down at her plate, trying to find a way to return to the light hearted banter of just a few minutes ago.) "Hm-m-- do you want my food?"
Xena: "No, I've lost my appetite." (Okay, now we KNOW there's something wrong!)

Scene switches to a tavern bedroom where the ladies are about to lay down ("separate beds!) to sleep. I usually rationalized their tendency to sleep with their boots on when they camped "just in case" they needed to get up and run from an animal or bandit. I can't explain Gabby's boots still being on when she went to bed in a BED... unless it was because she thought she might have to surreptitiously follow a certain WP out of the tavern in the middle of the night.

Gabrielle: "Still keeping secrets from me...after all these years."
Xena: "Look, it's something I did a long time before I met you. I just don't feel like talking about it right now."
Gabrielle: (Lying in her bed so she can still see Xena across the room) "All right."
Xena: (Tries to take the sting out of her words) "I'm not trying to shut you out. You know our friendship's the most important thing in my life, but in this case... "
Gabrielle: (She has this almost plaintive tone in her voice) "Xena, you don't have to tell me. Part of being a friend is letting people keep secrets. I respect that."
(Sweetpea, if you are trying to guilt her, it didn't work. And if you are SERIOUS about what you just said... PLEASE remember this is XENA you are talking to. Letting her keep secrets is how you ended up in China on the wrong side of the bed!)
Xena: (Sounds almost sullen) "OK."

(Nota bene to Gabrielle... whenever Xena goes to bed INSIDE and she's still wearing her armor... DON'T close your eyes for 1 second!)

This ep is the first in the Norse Trilogy, or the Ring trilogy. Our two heroines are tested in a variety of ways, from their courage to their morality, to their love for one another. We have just come from "Abyss" where subtext became maintext when Gabrielle asked to lay with Xena for eternity, and her family in the Amphipolis tomb. This trilogy will reinforce in word and deed the entire idea of "soulmates" which had been toyed with for at least 3 years in this series.

"The Rheingold" first separates the two women, and Gabrielle must go in search of Xena with the assistance of a guide, a woman who knows more about Xena's past than Gabrielle ever did.

"The Ring" will bring them back together, and will add two serious complications/competitors for their relationship.

"The Return of the Valkries" will separate them once again, and this time it will be Xena who shall be lead into a search for Gabrielle, by a man who loves the Sleeping Beauty almost as much as Xena.

But for right now... its morning, and Gabrielle awakens alone in their room. She sees a scroll on the pillow where Xena's head had recently laid.

Xena's Voice Narrates: (Gabrielle picks up and reads letter)"Gabrielle, I've gone to take care of some unfinished business. This mission is so dangerous, I'm afraid I won't survive, and I can't ask you to die with me once again. Whatever happens, know that my love for you is endless. Xena."

Gabrielle's Voice [Narrates as we see the bard ride her horse north in search of Xena. We see the sun rise/set, the moon rise over Gabrielle's campfire, we see the bard snuggle into her furs as she feels the cold deepen.] "I know Xena wouldn't have done this if she didn't feel this was something she had to do by herself. I debated whether to respect her wish, but I can't. Her path is my path. I've been following her now, for weeks. Her trail has taken me north, due north farther north than I've ever been."

Episode 119 season 6 # 7 "The Rheingold"

ACT I continues:

http://images.wikia.com/hercxena/images/1/1c/Therheingold_01.jpg

Gabrielle has arrived at a village and has stopped for some information. Like a good detective, she starts by discovering the local lore, starting with a tapestry depicting women soldiers flying through the sky on horseback. Unfortunately, the detective hasn't noticed she's already picked up a blonde stalker once she entered the village. One would think after her dealing with Callisto and Najara, that Gabrielle would notice a blonde tailing her through the market... then again she IS a little distracted by her current mission to find Xena.

Gabrielle: "Excuse me, does your tapestry have a story behind it?"
Old Man: "You're not from around here, I take it."
Gabrielle: (That damned Greek accent gave her away again!)"No."
Old Man: "Hah, well these women that, er- ride the flying horses they're called Valkyries, Odin's elite guard."
Gabrielle: "Odin-- "
Old Man: "Mm-hm-m."
Gabrielle: "-- king of the Norse gods?"
(Hanging around with Xena does have its pluses, like all the comparative religion studies they must go over every night by the campfire.)
Gabrielle: (Still intrigued by the tapestry) "This one... here?"
Old Man's Voice: "Hm-m."
Gabrielle: (The only Valkyrie not blonde) "She looks different from the rest."
Old Man: "Yes, now what was her name?"
Brunhilda's Voice: (The stalker standing at the next market stand now speaks) "Xena."
Gabrielle: "Xena? Do you know about this Valkyrie, Xena?"
Brunhilda: "Well, studying her has been the passion of my life." (Something Gabby can relate to!)
Gabrielle: "Have you seen her recently?"
Brunhilda: "Look, Xena's reign of terror ended almost 35 years ago. She's lo-o-o-o-ong since disappeared."
Gabrielle: "My name is Gabrielle. I have come a long way to find out about this Xena. Please, will you tell me what you know?"
Brunhilda: "She came to us from a distant land in the East. She called it Ch'in."
[Flashback]
Xena: "Yah!"
(She's riding through the woods on horseback)
Brunhilda's Voice:
[Narrates] "We call it the land that sent us a demon."

I have always wondered, from the BARBARIAN she was before and after Ch'in, how did Xena ever acquire the polish we saw when Gabrielle first encountered her? This trilogy goes a long way towards answering that question. The woman who rode through the forest and discovered Odin crucified on a Pine tree WAS the Xena of old, complete with coined headress and vulgar manner. But to be fair, it was that vulgar lusty Xena that intrigued Odin enough to come down from that tree and stop bemoaning his place in the universe.

Brunhilda's Voice: [Narrates] "Xena brought Odin out of his despair by sharing with him her lust for life. He, in turn, made her a Valkyrie."
Valkyrie's Voices: "Yah! Yah!"
Brunhilda's Voice: [Narrates]: "Xena excelled in her new role, but it was only a matter of time before she came into conflict with the woman who was the leader of the Valkyrie and Odin's lover, Grinhilda."

Valkyries are supposed to escort the honored slain to Valhalla, but Xena decided to goad men who were considering surrender into fighting to their deaths. Something that did not sit well with Grinhilda.

Xena: "Did someone say `Surrender'? What does surrender give you?"
Grinhilda: "The ability to fight another day, a chance to
see their families again and the berserkers who were chasing them will have an opportunity to show mercy."
Xena: "This is a battlefield! The only thing to do here is fight. Your pursuers come over that rise in seconds. So you can surrender and crawl back to your hovels and the everlasting scorn of your kinfolk or you can go out in a blaze of glory and fight and die in Odin's name!"

Needless to say, there were many more soldiers to transport to Valhalla when Xena was done giving her "pep" talk. She didn't even bother to stick around and do the transport herself, running home instead to Valhalla for the evening meal and some shameless flirting with "the boss".

Odin: "And what exactly do you desire?"
Xena: "Pour me some wine and I'll have to show you after dinner." [They chuckle as Grinhilda comes into the hall with serious attitude.]
Odin: "Oh Grinhilda, you're late. Where have ya been?"
Grinhilda: "Well, I've been escorting slain soldiers to their quarters here in Valhalla."
Xena: "They're all good soldiers, willing to die with Odin's name on their lips."
Grinhilda: "Escorting the dead is our sacred duty. There's no joy in that duty when brave young men are killed over a senseless battle for greed."
Xena: (Gordon Gecko's Hero!) "Greed is one of the fundamentals of life. It's like sex. It's-it's like the will to power. It's survival."
Grinhilda:
"Not their survival."
Xena: "Oh. No, not theirs, but theirs is a greater reward. Dying with a sword in their hand honors their lord and master Odin and earns them a place at his eternal banquet."
Grinhilda: "Odin, this is madness."
Odin: "Oh, I don't know, Grinhilda. Makes some sense to me."
Gri: "If you're embracing her worldview, there is no room here for me. I'll go."
Odin: (He slouches into his chair as Grinhilda stalks away, and turns to Xena)"I loved her once."
Xena: "Trust me, sire, you can live without love."

That line breaks Gabrielle out of her reverant audience mode to interrupt the story teller.

[The Present]

Gabrielle's Voice: "Poor Xena."
Brunhilda's Voice: "Poor Xena? You haven't been listening very well, have you?"
Gabrielle: "Xena thought that she could live without love. I know that she can't, 'cause she's my friend. Is there anything else you can tell me to help me find her?"
Brunhilda: "Camp here tonight. I'll come visit you this evening. I'll tell you what I know. Maybe something will help."
Gabrielle: "I'd appreciate that." (WHO could resist THAT face? Brunhilda sure can't!)

Its nightfall and Gabrielle is sitting by her fire, writing the scroll/ diary she started when she left on this journey to find Xena.

Gabrielle [Narrates]: "I don't know the details of Xena's mission but I'm beginning to understand her goal. She wants to correct some great wrong she did in the past. My dear friend's curse is to spend the rest of her life seeking a redemption she'll never allow herself."

Gabrielle: (She hears a noise, and puts her scroll down. Of note, her sais were ALREADY in her left hand as she stands up to investigate) "Brunhilda? Is that you? Brunhilda?"

I must confess that to the same extent as I hate the India arc I LOVE the Rheingold trilogy (or quadriology if we count 'You are there'?). Lot's to talk about!:)

WHEW!

;)

For a minute there, I thought you were going to say that you despised it even MORE than the India arc!

:)

For a show that purports NOT to push the "sweeter" aspects of their relationship upon the audience (Paraphrased IIRC from Rob Tapert in his interview for Rheingold) season 6 just keeps increasing the ante on these two and with this "quadrilogy" (LOVE that term), they go for the whole enchilada. (That's an American term, NOT a Freudian slip. )

Her sword is drawn and she brings it down on Gabrielle who easily deflects it with her sais. They battle back and forth with Brunhilda becoming "enraged" when Gabby twists her sword in such a way she cuts Brunhilda's thigh with it.

POW! BAM! SOCK! and DOWN goes Gabby on her back as Brunhilda smiles and places her sword back in its scabbard.

Brunhilda: (Towering over Gabrielle who's on her back, on the ground and NOT happy about either!)"You're pretty good. You cut me with my own sword. That's impressive. I can't tell whether you're better than me or not, though, and to prove it, I think one of us would have to die, and I don't want that." (She stretches out her hand to help Gabrielle up, and Gabby SLAPS it away and stays where she is.)
Gabrielle: (She's not ready to forgive and forget YET!) "Why did you attack me?"
Brunhilda: (Her hand still outstretched to the bard) "To prove to you that I am worthy to fight alongside Xena." (The hand still hovers over Gabrielle's face and it finally beckons Gabby with 2 quick "come on" motions before Gabby gives up her distrust and grabs it.)

The fangirl in Brunhilda is going into some serious overdrive as she sits next to Gabrielle's campfire and dishes even more on Xena.

Brunhilda: "If what you're telling me is true and Xena's still alive, I am on the verge of realizing a lifelong dream. I'll be able to meet the great Xena. Let me help you find her. I know these woods like the back of my hand."
Gabrielle: "If you can tell me everything that you know about Xena and these Valkyries, I bet I could figure it out."
Brunhilda: "All right, where did I leave off?"
Gabrielle: "Xena won Odin from Grinhilda."
Brunhilda: "Right."

Have I mentioned yet how much I like the costumes the Valkyries are wearing?

http://images.wikia.com/hercxena/images/0/02/Xena_Valkyrie.jpg

The PTB's have put this actress/character in a lot of costumes that have not done her justice, not to mention helmets that should best be forgotten (can you sing "The Bitter Suite"? ), but in these eps the costume, EVEN the helmet looks freaking awesome!

Even Grinhilda looks amazing in the get up.

http://images.wikia.com/warriorprincess/images/0/01/Ring_mq_078sd.jpg

[Flashback]

Brunhilda's Voice: [Narrates as we see Odin and Xena in Valhalla as he's teaching her some magic] "And, of course, that wasn't enough for Xena."

Odin: http://images.wikia.com/hercxena/images/2/27/Odin_2.jpg

Odin: (The vase of lilies before them have just burst into flames with Xena's spell) "You learn quickly."
Xena: (Xena's not impressed with the vase of fire) "That's the power you're going to give me? But couldn't I do that by just rubbing together a couple 'a sticks? [They chuckle as she continues to flirt.] Well, couldn't I?"
Odin:
"No, you've only just begun exploring it. You can go much further. If you keep practicing, one day you'll be able to harness all your energy into a flame that will burn for as long as you wish." (Foreshadowing alert!)
Xena: "Turn all of my bodily energy into a bonfire. Sounds like self-sacrifice. I'm not into that, Odin."

The flirting continues until Xena gets to the point, she wants to know about the Rheingold. When Odin hesitates, we see Xena pull out all the stops as she professes she can't "give" her love to someone who doesn't trust her and tries to walk away. Odin is SHOCKED that Xena could love anyone, given her previous statements re: living without it.

"I lied." claims the newly polished barbarian as Odin takes her in his arms to "comfort" her. (Just LOOK at Xena's face in the embrace! You KNOW what she's thinking.. "Norse gods are soooo easy!)

Odin: "Xena, I had no idea you felt this way. The first thing you should know, the Rheingold is very dangerous to someone who hasn't forsaken their love."

Norse gods may be easy, but the former head of the Valkyries is NOT!

Grinhilda's Voice: "Xena is moving up the Rhine searching for the Rhine maidens. How does she know about the maidens? You told her. She knew you wouldn't tell her if you thought she had forsaken love so she acted as if she was in love with you, didn't she?"
Odin: (Denial ain't just a river in Egypt, baby!) "That's ridiculous! How would she know that the power of the Rheingold is only available to those who have forsaken their love?"
Grinhilda: "Everybody knows what the gold does to a loving heart. The local bards sing songs about it."
Odin: "The local bards know this?"
Grinhilda: "Oh, you ought to mix with the people more, Odin. What they don't know is how to find the Rheingold. Now, however, Xena does. Give me back command of the Valkyrie. I can stop her."
Brunhilda's Voice:
[Narration continues] "So Xena headed for the Rhine river in
hope she could get the Rhine maidens to lead her to the gold. "
Xena: "Yah!" (Flying over the coutnryside.)
Brunhilda's Voice: "-- but Grinhilda and the other Valkyrie weren't far behind."
Gabrielle's Voice: (Interrupts the storyteller yet again) "They couldn't stop her, though, could they?"

We see a great fight between Xena and 5 other Valkyries on horseback.

http://dvdmedia.ign.com/dvd/image/a...ior-princess-season-six-20050404024036715.jpg

What impressed me the most, however, wasn't Xena's skill/tenacity, killer instinct. What impressed me was Grinhilda's passion. She said she would stop Xena, and when she was disarmed in mid flight, she did the only thing left to her. She JUMPED from her horse to Xena's, knocking them both off so that they fell several hundred feet to their apparent deaths.

ACT II ENDS

Apparent, because this IS afterall only the first ep in the trilogy.

ACT III BEGINS:

They each hit several branches on pine trees as they fall into the forest, which slows their descent and merely knocks the wind out of them as they hit the ground. Well, knocks the wind out of Xena, Grinhilda is a little more the worse for wear.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Q9irvoXZzmc/TVbQruRjU7I/AAAAAAAAA58/i_NYnM2sKyU/s1600/xena+Valkyrie+Gauntlets.jpg

I loved the interview with RJ Stewart (writer/producer) on the DVDs. He's frequently asked "WHY" Xena doesn't just kill Grinhilda here. Its obvious she planned to, she even raised her sword to deliver the killing blow, but she just stops, punches out "her lights" and walks away. RJ reminded us what Xena said when she first met Odin. She lived for conflict, she lived for battle and the thrill of winning. Well, she'd won. By letting Grinhilda live, it gave her the "opportunity" of meeting her again in the future, which meant more conflict which to Xena meant more fun.

Remember guys, this was "before the age of video games", and Xena had to find her fun where-ever she could.

Brunhilda's Voice [Narration continues] "So now, only the Rhine maidens stood between Xena and ultimate power."

Xena is playing sea sprite with the Rhine maidens.

http://images.wikia.com/hercxena/images/b/bb/Rhein_Maidens.jpg

I won't say she seduces the silliest one, but yeah, basically she does. It appears they are no more keen on the wiles of a Warrior Princess than the god Odin, and soon one is leading Xena underwater to a cavern that houses the treasure.

Xena: "Where is it? (She opens the small chest housing her heart's desire) All right. The Rheingold."
Rhinemaiden:
"You mustn't touch it."
Xena: (She reaches out her hand to pick up the large nugget) "Yes, I must."
Rhinemaiden:
"Are you mad? The Rheingold will only bring about your destruction."
Xena: (Eyes only for the gold in her hand) "Only if I haven't forsaken love."
Rhinemaiden: (The blonde beauty is starting to catch on!) "Have you?"
Xena: (Viciously elbows the blonde in the nose, knocking her down as blood spews EVERYWHERE) "Yah! Yep."
Brunhilda's Voice: (We watch as Xena the Valkyrie works the forge to melt the nugget into liquid and pours it into a mold to create the ONE ring!) "A ring forged from the Rheingold would give Xena ultimate power. And once she put it on, she became invincible."

[The Present and that pesky woman who keeps INTERRUPTING the storyteller!]

Gabrielle: (Still at her campfire, sitting with Brunhilda) "Xena wouldn't need a ring. She's a great fighter. She's probably the best."
Brunhilda:
(She's intrigued!) "You love her very much, don't you?"
Gabrielle: (Surprisingly circumspect for Gabrielle) "She's my best friend. I know her like I know my own heart."
Brunhilda: "A friendship like that is something to be envied."
Gabrielle: (Sidelong glance at Brunhilda before venturing) "It has a price, like everything."
Brunihilda: (This woman should have her own Oprah style talkshow!) "A price you love paying."
Gabrielle:
(She ADMITS it!) "Yeah."
Brunhilda: (What answer do you fear the most, Brunhilda???) "She feels the same?"
Gabrielle: (Still being very sparse in her responses) "I hope so."
Brunhilda: (Spoken like a true warrior) "She must. She must be on a very dangerous mission; otherwise, she probably wouldn't have left you behind."
Gabrielle: "That's what her note said."

I don't know about you, but I'm about to go into Xena withdrawl... I mean really, there IS a difference between OUR Xena and the evil chick we've watched all ep long. OUR Xena hasn't forsaken love, hell because she loved Gabrielle, she left her behind.

Right?

They are walking through the woods like two old warrior companions, comfortable with each other, and able to read each others thoughts.
Beowulf: "You miss your friend, don't you?"
Xena: "Sure."
Beowulf: "She is very beautiful."
Xena: (Smiles) "Yes, she is."
Beowulf: "I only saw her the one time, but she seems special. Who knows how I'd feel if I got to know her."
Xena: "Oh, you'd like her."
Beowulf: [Snickers as the pragmatic side wins out] "Of course, neither one of us will live long enough to-to see her again, anyway... We'll be there soon."
Xena: (Looks ahead, her face a mask of determination )"Good."
Beowulf: (Is this his idea of small talk, or is he trying to probe his companion's psyche?) "The people up here think of you as a demon."
Xena: (Face set like stone) "So they should."

The first 1:14 deals with the first ep.

Finally Brunhilda stops talking and asks some questions of her own... that's when she learns of Beowulf's interaction with Xena and the raven lock he carried.

Brunhilda: (Still sitting at the campfire, her face looking incredibly sad.) "Then I know why she came north, Gabrielle. She's on a suicide mission."

Meanwhile, Beowulf and Xena have arrived at the last outpost his men manned before they were slaughtered.

Beowulf: "Well, this is it-- the end of the line." http://images.wikia.com/hercxena/images/8/8c/Beowulf.jpg

My fav line of the ep comes next, as Beowulf walks towards the house and Xena turns back to the southern horizon and simply whispers a final prayer.

Xena: (Sad but nethertheless resolute) "Stay strong, Gabrielle."

ACT III ENDS

Heading away for a couple of weeks with work but I shall return to talk over the last hurrah of Xena season 6, see you then

Episode 119 season 6 # 7 "The Rheingold"

Gabby & Brunhilda at the campfire, end of act III: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_YW8n5zuwu...AB0s/6NFEyUuJyAs/s1600/rheingold_mq_264sd.jpg

ACT IV:

Our two brave, if not suicidal warriors are killing time in the outpost Beowulf's men defended to their deaths. Dead guys are scattered around the property, and even in the back of this building. Beowulf is sharpening his sword as Xena paces.

Beowulf: "23 warriors, ripped apart. The lucky ones died right here. The unlucky ones, dragged back to the beasts's lair...eaten alive."
Xena: "Friends of yours?"
Beowulf: "Many friends. Two brothers. I will do anything to avenge them. I'm ready to die, myself."
Xena: "Whatever happens, Beowulf-- I'm with you. What do they call this beast?"
Beowulf: "Grindl."
Xena: "Maybe we can take Grindl down with us. It's big and it's slow."
Beowulf: "You know this monster pretty well."
Xena: "I should, I created it."

My only beef with the editing here is the times aren't matched between X&B approaching the outpost and Gabrielle and Brunhilda's march after Xena. The two girls have finished sharing their Xena tales and now are marching in the dead of night while Xena is seen traveling in the day. Not a "big" deal, just disconcerting when they edited the various scenes together.

Brunhilda: (They have left Gabby's campfire far behind as they trudge through the forest.) "I'm sure they went to the Eastwyn bog."
Gabrielle: "How far are we?" (You would probably make better time on this night march, sweetpea, if you had brought your HORSE! )
Brunhilda: (The chick has an ulterior motive, Gabby!) "Well, we should camp here tonight. That way, in the morning... "
Gabrielle: (Are you KIDDING? There's no way Gabrielle can sleep when she thinks Xena is on a suicide mission!) "No, no, we're not gonna camp. We're going to travel through the night."
Brunhilda: (She rolls her eyes at the bard) "Then we'll be there by morning. I just hope we don't run into Grindl along the way." (Does she seriously think she can SCARE Gabby?)
Gabrielle: "Who's Grindl?"
Brunhilda: "`What's Grindl''s a better question. All the while I was growing up, I heard stories about a monster trapped in an abandoned mine above the bog."
Gabrielle: "Held by a raven lock?"
Brunhilda:
"Exactly. Ravens are the sign of Odin. He crafted that lock himself. Supposedly, it was unbreakable by human hands."
Gabrielle: "What happened?"
Brunhilda: (Flabbergasted at the Bard's refusal to see the truth) "The ring happened, the one that Xena made out of the Rheingold."

Xena & the ring: http://i.ytimg.com/vi/Wsr-77WccoY/0.jpg

Wherever our two warriors are, its finally night, and they hear something outside. Before he can react, that something decides to knock Beowulf across the room, where he's beyond reach of his sword. He notices another sword conveniently sticking out of the chest of a slain soldier, and he scrambles to get it as the beast makes its way into the building. Xena is off to the side and attacks him as Beowulf gets re-armed, then vaults over Grindl to stand as promised at Beowulf's side.

Xena & Beowulf: http://www.xenaville.com/cast/renato.jpg (Right guys, wrong ep, ignore costume!)

[BIG Fight]
Xena:
"That ring's gotta go back to the Rhine maidens."
Beowulf: "If one of us survives."
(BIG FIGHT CONTINUES!)
Xena:
(She finally sees the ring on Grindl's claw/finger) "The ring!"
(MORE FIGHTING)
Xena:
"Get ready for round two."
(Grindl knocks Xena to the ground and throws Beowulf across the room where he lands in a heap. Suddenly a beam gives way and the soldier is totally covered by falling debris!)
Beowulf: "Uh!"
(Xena is also down for the count, bloody, swordless, flat on her stomach as Grindl turns to eye her.)

Xena down, but is it for the full count? http://amazonbon200.tripod.com/rhin28.jpg

Its daylight again, and our two seekers have come upon the outpost.

http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/_...Gabrielle_Norse.jpg/250px-Gabrielle_Norse.jpg

Gabrielle: "This is it, isn't it?"
Brunhilda: "You do realize this may mean your death."
Gabrielle: (SHE doesn't realize, NOT doing this WILL mean Gabrielle's death.) "Xena's path is my path."
Brunhilda: (Sighs) "I wish I had a friend like you."
(Gabby turns back to Brunhilda and places a companionly hand on her shoulder.)
Gabrielle: "You do."

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...dsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:10,s:167&biw=1003&bih=592

Brunhilda looks shocked as Gabrielle turns back towards the building, making ready to do battle. Gabrielle sets her pack down and pulls her sais from her boots as she steps over the dead vikings and heads for the building that we saw Xena disappear into yesterday. Brunhilda draws her sword and is right behind her.

http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/_...unhilda.jpg/150px-Gabrielle_and_Brunhilda.jpg

They enter the building, and at first it seems deserted. Then Gabrielle hears a moan, and runs for a pile of debris to unearth the person trapped beneath. When she pulls him upright, Beowulf looks up into her green eyes, and knows the question burning in her heart.

Beowulf: [Moans] "It dragged her off. I don't know whether she's dead or alive."

Gabrielle stands up to piroutte in the room, looking for clues. She calls to her friend, but instead of hearing another moan from another debris pile, she sees a pile of armor.

Gabrielle: "Xena? No. [Sighs as she gently picks up the chest armor and says ...] Xena."

Episode 120 season 6 #8 "The Ring"

I don't usually discuss the "disclaimers" at the end of the show (the cute line tacked onto the end of the credits).

IIRC I did mention the one at the end of "Ides Of March". ("Xena and Gabrielle were killed during the production of this motion picture.")

This time, I'm not only going to mention it, I'm going to mention it "up front". ;)

"Gabrielle's popularity soared in the making of this motion picture."

You'll understand why I'm doing this, soon enough. :bolian:

http://images.wikia.com/hercxena/images/1/1c/Therheingold_01.jpg

TEASER BEGINS

Last time, on Xena:

A stranger from the north has come looking for Xena. A monster she caged 35 years ago is loose and she must return with him to slay the beast. The mission is so dangerous, she tries to leave Gabrielle behind, but the Bard refuses to be left and so follows the Warrior Princess. On her way north, Gabrielle meets a blonde warrior who tells her stories of a Valkyrie named Xena who terrorized the people 35 years ago before she disappeared from their lands. This Valkyrie became Brunhilda's hero, and she promises to help Gabrielle for a chance at meeting the legendary Xena, but before that could happen, Beowulf and Xena meet the monster Grindl and are defeated. Beowulf was left for dead by the monster, while Xena was dragged away to its lair. All that is left for Gabrielle to find of her "best friend" is the chest armor that once protected the Warrior princess' heart.

Gabrielle is leading Brunhilda and Beowulf on a forced march through the winter forest, looking for Xena and Grindl.

Beowulf: (Says the man who already admitted to Xena that after one look, he was smitten with Gabrielle) "We're deep in Grindl territory."
Brunhilda: (Says the woman with more than a few ulterior motives of her own!) "The chances of finding her are getting less and less."
Gabrielle:
(Says the best friend who is oblivious to everything except the fact that Xena has been captured by a monster!) "Then we pick up the pace."
Brunhilda: (Isn't she the one who's life long dream was to MEET Xena?) "What I'm trying to say is, don't get your hopes up, Gabrielle."
Gabrielle: (She may be oblivious, but she's TOTALLY right when it comes to Warrior Princesses!) "I'm not relying on hope. Xena's tough to kill."
(Beowulf comes forward and fingers a red smear on a nearby tree trunk)
Beowulf: (Don't assume... its makes an "ass" of "u" and "me") "Xena's blood. This is where it ended."
Gabrielle: (You can call her a LOT of things, but "ass" ISN'T one of them!) "It's where she got away, not long ago."
Beowulf: (Is he just being pragmatic, or ready to press his advantage of Xena's "death") "Gabrielle, are you being totally honest with yourself? I mean, all of the evidence points to the fact that Xena... "
Gabrielle: [Gabby interrupts as Brunhilda  at Beowulf] "She got away. She waited for her chance and she escaped." (Gabby looks at the surroundings, and finds one of Xena's forearm guards (bracers?) lying nearby, covered in blood. Its Beowulf's turn to )
Brunhilda: (The blonde is getting a tad impatient) "Where are her tracks?"
Gabrielle: "Xena is alive. If we split up, we can cover more ground.:

And with that pronouncement, the three take off in different directions, with Brinhulda looking the MOST put out, and NOT because she's missed her one and only chance to meet her childhood "hero".

Gabrielle is walking alone through the woods, her pack on her shoulder, Xena's armor hanging off the pack, when suddenly she slows, and looks about warily.

Gabrielle's Voice: "Xena?"

http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/_...Gabrielle_Norse.jpg/250px-Gabrielle_Norse.jpg

She steps back to the right to survey the lanscape, when suddenly from nowhere we see a figure dart from the side, a left arm reaches out and grabs Gabrielle to pull her back behind a tree.

Gabrielle: [Muffled cry] "Xena-- "

We see a bloody, dirty WP pull her friend close, her left hand over the younger woman's mouth as the Warrior scans the top of the hill before them. Gabrielle goes immediately quiet, eyes darting back and forth as Xena relaxes her grip on her mouth.

Xena: [Warns the warrior in a whisper] "Sh-h."

Leaning on the tree to her right, Xena quietly points to the top of the hill and Gabrielle leans slightly left to see better.

Xena: (Whispers) "There."

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...page=1&ndsp=12&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0&tx=87&ty=81

Through the trees, we see Grindl walking the crest of the hill. The monster is a reflection of the bog and the forest from which it sprung. Its like nothing Gabrielle has ever seen before and she leans back into Xena as the Warrior looks at her adversary with scorn.

Beowulf's Voice: (In the distance) "Gabrie-e-e-elle!"

The monster stops to listen, and seems to sniff the air as Xena and Gabrielle remain hidden behind the tree. He then turns and resumes his march over the hill until he disappears. Once gone, Gabrielle finally starts to breathe again and turns to look Xena in the face for the first time in many weeks.

Gabrielle: (She grabs the wounded WP in a bearhug) "Oh-h-h-h-h... don't ever leave me again." http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l92yskATg81qbxq6qo1_500.gif (Realizing Xena is hurt, she releases her hug and steps back to survey the damge, and doesn't like what she sees!) "Look at you."

(Xena leans back against a tree and slides down to sit on the ground, her sword at her left side, her chakram still on her right hip as she tries to reassure her worried friend.)
Xena: "Yeah, I know. It's all right.Don't fuss, OK?"

(Gabrielle is going through her pack looking for something to bind up Xena's wounds, as Beowulf and Brunhilda run up. NEITHER ask about the woman bleeding on the ground!!!!!)

Beowulf: "Gabrielle!"
Brunhilda: "Gabrielle! Are you all right?!"
Gabrielle: (Just call her oblivious!) "I'm fine. Xena needs water."
Brunhilda: (Oh right... THIS is my childhood hero???) "Xena."
Beowulf: (Oh right... this IS the woman I traveled for 2 months to find and bring back to fight a monster that was killing my people...) "Yeah. Clean yourself up. You look awful."
Xena:
(The very dirty, very bloody WP looks up into the smiling face of her comrade in arms, and returns the sentiment) "Thanks."

http://thetorchonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/ring004.jpg

Beowulf leaves the girls to scout ahead for Grindl. Gabrielle is busy pulling a cloth from her pack, and using it to bind Xena's right thigh wound to stop the blood from coursing down her leg, as Brunhilda finally lets her inner fangirl free.

http://mikes-images.com/eps/ring/images/ring_mq_035sd.jpg

Brunhilda: "Xena, I have waited my entire life to meet you."
Xena: (Begins to pull on the armor Gabby just returned to her) "If I knew I had a fan coming, I would have combed my hair."

(Trust me Xena, true fan girls aren't put off by bad hair days!)

Brunhilda: "I never should have doubted that you'd be alive." (I think I can hear Gabrielle say "duhhhhh!!!) "Only the legendary Xena could survive against Grindl and the power of the ring."
Xena: (Its actually cute to see Gabrielle simultaneously wind the bandage about Xena's leg AND help the WP on with the armor at the same time) "I would have thought the legendary Xena wouldn't be too welcome up here."

Brunhilda: (She obviously doesn't understand Greecian sarcasm when she hears it.)" Weaklings don't like you. I have nothing but the utmost respect for you and your philosophy. From the very first story I ever heard I knew I wanted to be a warrior like you, to live for battle-- die with valor-- "

(Xena is uncomfortable with this effusive praise and she glances nervously about. She actually winces as Gabrielle tightens the bandage about the thigh.)
Xena: "Well, I've gotten a lot smarter since then. I've learned to respect life, love, and peace."
Brunhilda: (The chick's flummoxed!) "Why? What happened?"

(Xena smiles, looking positively embarassed as she looks at Gabrielle who's smirking silently at the WP as she finishes the bandage.)
Xena: (Shrugs) "Lots of reasons."

Brunhilda looks from Xena to Gabrielle and back... and she DOESN"T look pleased. Beowulf finally returns, announcing the monster is gone. Brunhilda presumes its flanked their position, cutting off their path of retreat. Xena concurs and she stands to make a final entreaty.

http://www.rocnet.us/site/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/s6-ring-duo01.jpg

Gabrielle: (Helps Xena to her feet) "Let's get you outta here."
Xena: "No, Gabrielle, I can't do that. Grindl and I have a date with destiny. Gabrielle, I know better than to try to talk you into leaving, but you two should go. (She's quoting Grinhilda here!!!) Live to fight another day. This is my battle."
Gabrielle: (Looks up at Xena) "Our battle."
Brunhilda: "I won't leave Gabrielle."
(Gabrielle smiles at her newest buddy)

Beowulf: "Neither will I."
(Gabrielle looks at Beowulf with confusion)
Xena: (She may be bloody, she may be dirty and need a good comb out, but she is NOT oblivious to the gauntlet that has been thrown down before her!) "Well, I guess we're in this together, then. This way."

["Gabrielle's popularity soared in the making of this motion picture." ]

Episode 120 season 6 #8 "The Ring"

http://images.wikia.com/hercxena/images/a/a1/Thering_01.jpg

Act I:

The quartet approach Grindl's lair, and Gabby tries to give Xena one last chance to back out.

Xena: (Our armored WP stares into the entrance to the abandoned mine turned prison) "This is it. This is its lair."
Gabrielle: "Are you sure about thus?"
Xena: (Grimly determined) "I'm sure."

She leads them deep into the mine's corridors until she finds where they will make their last stand against the monster.

Beowulf: (Channeling Eve?) "So, what's your plan?"
Xena:
"I'm going to lure Grindl in here. When she's in position, I want you bring the mountain down on her head."
Gabrielle: (Someone's listening!) "Her? What is this Grindl?"
Xena: (One final revelation, one more sin to atone for) "A mistake from a very long time ago. I defeated the Rhine maidens to steal their gold not for the wealth it could have brought me but for the power foretold by Odin's rune stones."

We watch the Xena of old break open the mold and remove the ring of power... after it cools she picks it up to admire it but suddenly an ARROW comes flying across the forge and strikes the ring from her hand. Being in the Xenaverse, the physics of arrow motion allow it to strike the back wall and ricchocet into the hands of the archer... Grinhilda!

http://www.xena.nu/grinhilda3.jpg

Xena is ticked off royally that Grinhilda has her ring, and demands its return. Grinhilda, for her part, is ticked off royally at the shame and dishonor Xena's brought upon the Valkyries.

Xena: "It's no use to you. You know what the runes say, unless you have forsaken love the power of the ring will destroy what you value most."
Grinhilda:
"The runes also say that anyone who puts on the ring has a surge of godlike strength before the destructive power kicks in."
Xena: "You'd gamble that you can beat me before the ring destroys your essence."
Grinhilda: "I'll take that chance to destroy you. The Valkyrie had honor once, before they learned to prize the thirst of blood. You taught us that, Xena."
Xena: (No matter whether she's evil or good, she ALWAYS gets the best lines!) "Let's see if you took notes."

Grinhilda puts the ring on her finger and is imbued with the power foretold by the runestones of Odin.

http://i521.photobucket.com/albums/w333/kayleeleigh/grinbut6.jpg

BIG FIGHT ensues; back and forth they battle, first one has the upperhand, then the other. Suddenly Gribnhilda has Xena down on the ground, and she pulls her arm back to give the killing blow... so reminescent of that scene in the meadow where Xena was about to kill Grinhilda on her way to the Rhine Maidens. Xena spared Grinhilda that day... but its obvious that act of mercy will NOT be repeated today.

Suddenly Grinhilda feels something run through her arms, and she falls to the ground before Xena. Her slender shapely hands morph into huge long fingered stick like objects, and her body/head follow as she changes into a hideous monster which recalls the bogs that surrounds these lands.

http://thetorchonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/xena1.jpg

Despite being dwarfed in size, evil Xena continues to trashtalk her nemesis.

Xena: "It's a whole new you, Grinhilda. Now we see what you prize the most, Grinhilda. You've lost what you hold dearest in your heart, your humanity, your beauty."

And to add insult to injury, evil Xena swings her sword and cuts off the newly made monster's finger. Not just any finger, but the one that wore the ring of power.

Xena's Voice: [Narrates as we see Xena lure Grinhilda into her new prison] "Using chains I stole from Odin and Grinhilda's own necklace as a lock-- I transformed this mine into her prison, then I drove Grinhilda towards her fate. I knew being trapped in that hideous form would be the ultimate torture for Grinhilda. I wanted her to suffer with her own ugliness forever."
(We see once again how Grinhilda stripped the ring from Xena's hand as she was locking the Valkyrie turned monster into the cave)
Xena: (To the newly imprisoned monster) "Don't think you've won anything! These chains will hold you for eternity, and you will never use the power of the ring, never!"
(Xena rides away from Grinhilda and her prison without a backward glance)
Xena's Voice: "I wasn't going in that cage without the ring and Grinhilda wasn't about to give it to me. It was a stalemate."
(Back in present times, Xena looks at Gabrielle.)
Xena: "I knew that the power of the ring wouldbe useless to her unless "
Gabrielle: "... she learned to forsake love."
Xena: "That's right. 35 years of imprisonment is enough to drive love out of anyone's heart. And once that happened the power of the ring was hers. She broke free. Now nothing would stop her murderous rampage. You ready for this?"

Xena goes out to tempt Grindl into the cave. As Grindl follows her deeper into the cave, they finally enter a tall cavern, one that has Beowulf, Gabrielle and Brunhilda hiding on a "2nd story" shelf with a large boulder. Its obvious that they are to drop it on Grindl's head as she passes beneath them... but its also obvious this monster wasn't just born yesterday. It smells a rat and turns to run away.

To say Xena is pissed would be putting it mildly as she chases after the monster, just as its an understatement to say Gabrielle isn't happy with the Warrior's change in plan as she abandons her safe perch.

Gabrielle: "Xena, no! Xena!" (She leaves her perch with the others in close formation and chases Xena down the corridor.)
Xena: (She's stopped at a T junction and is trying to decide which one to follow as Gabrielle arrives) "I thought I told you not to come in here!"
Gabrielle: (Xena obviously hasn't been taking notes THIS adventure!) "I never listen!"

Suddenly Grindl comes crashing through the tight knot of 4, knocking them all to the ground like a bowling ball. Xena and Beowulf are up first and start attacking the monster. Gabby is next, and is knocked down twice before she can do any serious damage. Brunhilda, that wannabe Xena doesn't even draw her freaking sword until Gabby is knocked down the SECOND time, but at least she finally takes it as a personal affront and tries to defend the bard before she too is batted away by the huge monster and Gabrielle falls for a third time.

A ceiling beam cracks, and Xena gets an idea!

http://www.xenites.fr/blog/images/Personnages_secondaires/beowulf.jpg

Xena: "Beowulf, get to the other side!"
Beowulf: "What about you?!"
Xena: "Don't worry about me. Go." (And she pulls her chakram from her hip and sends it whrrrrring into the broken beam, finishing the job! Xena tries to run past Grindl to safety but is batted back into the deeper end of the mine as the ceiling falls.)
Beowulf: (Pulls the fallen Gabrielle up and away from the falling debris, as Brunhilda turtles her way backwards to prevent being covered) "Gabrielle! Look out! Gabrielle, are you hurt?"

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_YW8n5zuwunI/THKy76GoaRI/AAAAAAAAB0c/fkm-hOkk3kY/s1600/Brunhilda_500.jpg

Brunhilda: (AGAIN with the "Gabrielle" obsessions when its XENA that just saved all of their lives and who's safety is completely unknown!) "Are you all right?"
Gabrielle: (I can forgive her obliviousness, since at least SHE'S got her eyes on the RIGHT prize!) "Xena-a-a-a-a! Xena-a-a!"

Episode 120 season 6 #8 "The Ring"

ACT II:

The ceiling has caved in, completely separating Gabrielle from Xena, a completely UNACCEPTABLE situation in the "best friend's" mind.

Gabrielle: (Staring at the wall of rock between her and Xena) "Xena?!"
Beowulf: (They both start attacking the wall, pulling stone from the pile) "She's right behind here!"
Beowulf: (FINALLY he starts thinking of someone besides Gabrielle) "Xena-a-a-a-a-a!"
Gabrielle:
(Climbs to the top of the pile, attacking the rock there) "Xena-a-a-a!"
(Brunhilda, meanwhile, is strangely passive while her "childhood hero" is in danger)
Gabrielle: "Watch out!" (Rolls the rock down the pile and behind her as she commands) Help me!"

Meanwhile, back on the OTHER side of the rock fall, a WICKED battle is going on between one Warrior Princess and one REALLY BIG, really pissed off Monster, complete with lots of grunts, groans, roars and THAT'S just from Xena as she hits the Monster time and again with her sword. Her chakram, alas, is out of reach, partially buried in the rockfall, and Grindl is blocking her way to it. Finally, Xena jumps up and runs away, further into the mine, with Grindl in hot pursuit.

Gabrielle and her troops have finally cleared a large enough space in the top of the rockfall for the petite woman to squirm her way through to the other side.

Gabrielle: ( From the top of the rockfall, she sees the empty mine corridor before her and screams as she wriggles her small frame through the opening)"Xena-a-a-a!"
Brunhilda:
(Standing behind Beowulf, that OTHER blonde in the quartet is NOT happy with the Bard!) "W-wait! Gabrielle, wait! Wait!"

This next moment reminds me of the scene in the 1981 movie "Excalibur", when Lancelot and Guenivere wake up and find King Arthurs sword plunged into the ground nearby. No... not the sexual implications of the betrayal of the best friend and the Queen, but Lancelot's reaction when he realizes Arthur and Excalibur are not together. I can't find the damned quote, but it goes something like, "The KING without his sword! The LAND without its King!"

Gabrielle: [Whispers reverentially as she stands on the other side of the rockfall, and sees the Chakram caught in the debris] "Xena."
(She bends down to pick it up, and then runs down the corridor in search of her friend, leaving her larger "troops" behind, still trapped on the other side of the rockfall.)

Beowulf: (Still behind the rockfall with Brunhilda) "Gabrielle!"
Brunhilda: (If looks could kill, Beowulf would be in trouble right now!) "Ah-h-h-h-h."

Meanwhile, Grindl has caught up with Xena in that cavern we saw once before. Grindl has the Warrior Princess in a deathgrip; her feet dangling high above the floor and Xena, though enraged, is still helpless.

But not friendless!

Enter the running figure of Gabrielle who LEAPS onto the back of the Monster and using the chakram begins chopping at its neck like a lumberjack.

Xena: (Whispers) "Gabrielle."

Grindl finally dislodges her assailant by dropping Xena and reaching back to fling Gabrielle forward where she falls hard upon the ground. As Gabrielle flies through the air, she loses her hold upon the chakram and it falls into the utterly capable hands of one VERY ANGRY WARRIOR PRINCESS!

Xena grabs the chakram and shoves it under Grindl's breast bone, inch by inch she shoves it as the Monster screams, until finally she rips it all the way through, cutting the heart from its connections and pulling her chakram free as she pivots away from the beast. Grindl stops screaming and falls silently behind her as Xena looks at Gabrielle.

Xena: [Turns back to Grindl and says as Beowulf and Brunhilda finally run into the scene] Forgive me, Grinhilda."
Gabrielle: "Are you all right?"
Xena: (Places her hand reassuringly on Gabrielle's shoulder) "Yeah, I'm all right."
(Xena bends down to take the ring of power from Grindl's "hand", then she notices something interesting and gives a little startle)
Gabrille: (Too involved in looking at Xena to notice anything else but her) "What is it?"
Xena: (Appears to hear a growl from far away) "Let's get out of here."

Although we just left the cavern where we last saw Gabrielle wearing that great patchwork coat of hers, she doesn't bother to retrieve it before walking out of the mines and into the forest and the cold Euopean winter, much (I'm sure) to certain fanboys/fangirls and Brunhilda's everlasting joy.

(The two friends are walking through the forest as Beowulf and Brunhilda tag along, temporarily forgotten.)

Gabrielle: "Xena, you killed it. It's over."
Xena: (She finally fesses up) "No, that monster that I locked in the mine long ago, I cut off one of its fingers. What I killed just now, it had all of its fingers."
Gabrielle: "If then wasn't Grinhilda, then what was it?"
Xena: (They hear another roar in the distance) "That's Grinhilda, and whatever it was I killed, she's not happy about it. We gotta get to the Rhine maidens. I got somethin' that belongs to them."

(Xena is on point, Beowulf is covering their retreat, and that leaves Brunhilda time to "bond" with her blonde Greecian friend.)

Brunhilda: (Its heartbreaking when fangirls cry because their heroes turn out to be flesh and blood afterall) "She really is giving up the power of the ring. She is not the Xena of the legends."
Gabrielle: (And that's a bad thing?) "She fights for good now."
Brunhilda: "I don't know. I mean, in battle she's everything that I imagined, yes."
Gabrielle:
"There's more to being a warrior than skill. There's fighting for what you believe in, for people that you love." (Xena has stopped and is bending over her right thigh to inspect the bandage Gabrielle placed there when they first met. She's listening to the conversation going on next to her, and I'm LOVING her reactions!)
Brunhilda: (Eyes only for the oblivious Gabrielle) "You know, before I met you, I never thought of a warrior as having any love but the love of battle." (Xena's eyes are rolling at this last comment!)
Xena: (Still playing with her bandage) "I'm gonna tend to this. Brunhilda, could you scout up ahead? See what's over that ridge?" (Brunhilda looks first at Gabrielle who smiles at her, before she runs off to do the WP's bidding) "Thank you."

(Xena watches Brunhilda disappear before standing up to look at Gabrielle.)

And now, my favorite line of the episode!

Xena: (Looks directly at Gabrielle) "I don't like her."

Gabrielle turns to look at Xena in confusion.

Gabrielle: (After Thelassa in Shark Island prison, and Najara BOTH times they met, you'd think Gabrielle would start to get a clue when someone is crushing on her!) "Why do you say that?"
Xena: (Is she coy or is she really uncertain?) "I don't know. She's just not who she says she is, that's all." (Yeah, right, and the "check's in the mail.")
Gabrielle: "Xena, she's searching. She doesn't know what she believes in."
Xena: "No, she believes in exactly what I used to believe in. I don't trust her."

(LOVED the sidelong glance Beowulf gives Xena when she says this.)

Brunhilda is scouting ahead, but the only thing she finds are ravens. You remember what THEY signal, right?

Odin: "You don't like my friends, Brunhilda. They're my eyes and ears in the field. So what went wrong, Brunhilda? The plan was once Xena had the ring you were to attack her in a weakened state and take it!"
Brunhilda:
(Freaking Valkyrie in disguise! That Blonde hair should have been a dead give away!) "Yes, but there were complications."
Odin: "Complications. My ravens, they tell me you've fallen in love with her partner. Is it possible you thought that killing Xena would kill any chance you had with Gabrielle?"
Brunhilda: (Under her breath) "Those mangy stool pidgeons." (Normal voice) "Odin, I had to play up to Gabrielle so she wouldn't suspect my true motives."
Odin: "Youfailed to bring the ring to me."
Bru:nhilda "But I j... "
Odin: "Silence! I`ll deal with you later." (He turns to his quard, 4 Valkyrie on horseback) Xena has the power to kill gods. She's also capable of taking out her share of Valkyrie. But she has a weakness, her partner, Gabrielle. Capture her and the ring is ours."
Head Valkyrie: "And if she won't trade?"
Odin: "Oh, she'll trade." (he turns to stare into Brunhilda's face just before he disappears) "...or Gabrielle will be killed."

Back down the trail, the trio are starting to get suspicious about Brunhilda's prolonged absence.

Beowulf: "What's keeping Brunhilda?"
Xena: (She smells a rat!) "Somethin's going on."
(Suddenly the Valkyrie arrive... on foot!)

VALKYRIE: (stop at 1:18 if you don't want " fight spoilers".

Head Valkyrie: (Points to Gabrielle) "That one! Get the blonde!"

[Fight starts, with Beowulf and Xena both keeping the Valkyrie from getting anywhere near Gabrielle.]

Brunhilda: (Suddenly from nowhere a black steed gallops into view, carrying Odin's disappointment into the fray) "Yah-h-h-h! Yah!" (But she doesn't attack the Valkyrie, nor does she strike at Xena... instead she grabs Gabrielle as she rides by and the horse takes flight through the trees)
Gabrielle: "Xena!" (THIS is the woman who thought ARGO was too tall!)
Xena: "Brunhilda, stop!" (Oh puhlease, Xena... as if YOU would "stop" just because someone asked you?)
Gabrielle: (Her voice fading in the distance) "Xenaaa!"
Xena: (Brunhilda obviously doesn't know what this woman did to a whole tribe of cannibals who tried to keep her from Gabrielle) "Gabrie-e-e-e-elle!"

Episode 120 season 6 #8 "The Ring"

In the episode commentary, the playwright discussed how they always try to separate Gabrielle and Xena in the "act breaks" for dramatic tension". I'd say they hit their marks during THIS ep!

ACT III BEGINS

Gabrielle: (Still screaming from her perch on the flying horse) "Xena!"
Beowulf: (You can imagine him cursing the Blonde traitor who's just stolen his one great if unrequited love.) "Gabrie-e-e-e-elle!"
[Fight continues between Xena and the 4 Valkyrie]
Xena:
(Growling as she swings her sword!) "Beowulf! See if you can find where they're headed!"
(She doesn't have to issue THAT order twice, as he runs off to search the sky)
Odin: (The Norse god appears as Xena looks to behead a Valkyrie) "ENOUGH! Let's talk about this..." (Looks to his head Valkyrie) "...alone. [Sighs at Xena as his guard melt away] "35 years, you look amazing, Xena, for a mortal."
Xena: (The Mistress of the obvious) "You've come for the ring."
Odin: "And you want your friend. May I suggest a trade?"
Xena: "A trade."
Odi's Voice: "Hm-m."
Xena: (I love how no matter HOW stressed she is, this woman's mind is always processing new data and coming up with amazingly insightful deductions) "No, I saw your faces when Brunhilda carried Gabrielle off. You were as surprised as I am. She's acting alone."

Odin thinks he has an Ace up his sleeve, and tells Xena the Monster she killed was Grinhilda's son. He suggests an alliance between Odin and Grinhilda would be unbeatable, even for Xena. Xena tries to reassure the god that her only intention is to return the ring to the Rhinemaidens, which DOESN'T please the god. When he threatens to kill the WP, Xena finally realizes what he wants.

Xena: (shocked) "You want that ring for yourself."
Odin: "Yes, it ensures my power against other gods and god-slayers like you."
Xena: (Snears) "Have you forsaken love?"
Odin: (Sees her snear and raises it 2 fold!) "After you it wasn't very hard." (SEE! Xena really IS THE CAUSE of everything important that occurred in history!)
Xena: (Game face is FULLY ON!) "Then I'd be a fool to give it to you."
Odin: (Picks up the rhetorical gauntlet) "Then you leave me no choice. You remember, your ability to forsake love is long gone! I'll give Grinhilda your regards."

As Odin disappears, Beowulf arrive with news. The traitorous Valkyrie was flying Gabrielle BACK to the Eastwyn Bog. (Where they had just come from, the home of Grindl's lair)

Xena: (All thoughts of Rhinemaidens and missing gold are pushed away as one thing becomes paramount in her mind... the rescue of her friend) "Take me there."

The horse has come in for a landing in the Eastwyn Bog, and Gabrielle is tossed to the ground, but she doesn't stay there long as she jumps up to angrily face Brunhilda's treachery.

Gabrielle: (Spins to face her captor) "What are you doing?"
Brunhilda: "Odin and the others were gonna kill you for the ring."
Gabrielle: (Still not catching on!) "We left Xena to fight them all."
Brunhilda: (Be careful, Brunie, your own obsession is showing!) "Is Xena all you think about?"
Gabrielle: "Sh... " (FINALLY... Gabby IS catching a clue as she tries to open the Valkyrie's eyes) "...Xena is my family. She's the most important thing in my life."
Brunhilda: "All right, Gabrielle, listen to me. I bring to Valhalla the bravest warriors slain in battle, heroes. But your heart has more truth and courage than any that I've seen. The beauty inside you burns like a star, Gabrielle. I was supposed to betray you and Xena but I couldn't, not now. You've changed me. You've opened my eyes and you've changed me the way you changed Xena."
Gabrielle: (Listens, processes and comes straight to the point with this newest suitor) "I don't know what to say. I'm sorry." (She spins and walks away, back to where she left Xena fighting for her life, which does NOT please Brunhilda!)
Brunhilda: (Chases after the woman who's ability to love melted her own hardened heart, until she can grab her and demand a different answer) "I defied my god for you, Gabrielle!"

True to his word, Odin goes to Grindl's underground lair where he discovers the monstrous Grinhilda mourning her monstrous son. He tells her Xena is back and killed the "boy" which enrages the Mother even further. She nonverbally agrees to his offer to ally in order to kill the Warrior Princess.

Meanwhile, not too far away we see Gabrielle still in her tete e tete with Brunhilda. She is being more blunt about her feelings for Xena than she ever was during those campfire discussions in "last week's" episode. Too bad Brunhilda's obsession makes her blind to a simple fact. The thing she loves the most about Gabrielle, is the thing that prevents Gabrielle from feeling the same about Brunhilda.

Gabrielle: "Xena and I have a connection. It's stronger than either one of us. We're soul mates."
Brunhilda:
"My love is strong. I can feel it!"
Gabrielle: "I am trying to tell you that Xena and I are meant to be together. We didn't... we didn't make it that way. It just is."
Xena's Voice: (In the distance) "Gabrie-e-e-e-e-elle!"
Gabrielle:
(Looks up hopefully) "Xena!"
Brunhilda: "I can see your heart lies with Xena..." (She draws her sword and turns to march towards that rivals voice) "... but I'll prove to you which one of us deserves your love."

We see Beowulf leading Xena through the forest AKA Eastwyn Bog. He's as determined as she is... which makes them a potent fighting force.

Xena: (I can't tell if its a compliment or a question) "You do know your way around this place, don't you?"
Beowulf: "I never had a reason to come into this foul pit. But for Gabrielle I would go through the fires of Hell." (Sorry, Beowulf, but as far as Xena's concerned, she can say... "Been there, Done that, got the t shirt!")
Gabrielle's Voice: (In the distance) "Xena"!
Xena: (Hope springs eternal) "That's her."
Beowulf: "Over here."

Unfortunately... THAT way lay Odin and his Valkyries, who have NO intention of letting Xena and Beowulf pass. Odin's first firebolt takes out Beowulf, tossing him 6 feet behind Xena.

This time go to 1:18

Odin: "Give me the ring, Xena."
Xena: (I LOVE this threat!) "Step aside, or join the Olympians."
Odin: "Very well. I like the odds."
Xena: "So do I."

Odin is pissed as he sends part of his guard off to find Gabrielle with plans to kill her ON his order. THAT pisses off our Warrior Princess, and you can guess what she does next!

The fight was great, if disturbing in its initial brevity.

Xena does a spinning vault to her right to avoid a firebolt, but the tree she's standing in front of ISN'T a tree. Its a freaking 15 foot tall Grindl that puts her immediately into a pincer grasp.

It looks pretty bad for our Warrior Princess until Beowulf stands with his axe at the ready, distracting everyone.

Xena then kicks the Norse god in the head and gets away from Grindl/Grinhilda so she can fight in earnest. Odin tries to take her down with his axe, but Xena's chakram not only spilts the handle in two, it keeps whipping about Odin's head so that he's pinned down for a minute and can't interfere with Xena and Beowulf's fight with the Valkyrie. Xena has her way with two of the Valkyrie while Beowulf seems to be winning against their leader... until she puts her sword through his abdomen and he falls unmoving upon the ground. Grinhilda finally backhands Xena across the bog until she winds up against a large pile of rock.

The remaining Valkyrie, Odin and Grinhilda encircle Xena as she's backed up against the rocks.

Xena: "Beowulf!"
Odin:
(Xena has the ring out and is threatening to place it on her OWN finger) "Give me the ring, Xena and I won't kill your friend." Look, you can't defeat us all. You must forsake love to gain the ring's power. Your feelings for Gabrielle guarantee that it won't work for you."
Xena: (Looks up at Grindl's Alien-ess face) "The ring works for everyone at first. Ask her."
Odin:
(getting desperate) "Yes, but eventually it kills the essence of one that has not forsaken love. What do you hold dearest in your heart, Xena? Are you ready to lose it?"
Xena: (Sound familiar, Grinhilda?) "I'm out of options, Odin."
Odin: [Sighs as he commands his Valkyrie!] "Kill her! And kill Gabrielle!"

(When will these gods EVER learn you CAN'T WIN against Xena by threatening to kill Gabrielle????????)

Xena, the Warrior Princess, places the ring fully on her finger, and as bright lights encircle her she stares at Odin with a look that could freeze the hottest blood...

The power of the ring imbues Xena with more than strength and confidence, it makes her telekinetic as she stands before her enemies and simply opens her hands. The sword on the ground to her right, the chakram on the ground to her left both simply leap up into her hands! Odin reacts first, sending a firebolt she EASILY deflects into Grindl, sending her scurring away! A second firebolt is deflected into the chest of the head Valkyrie, taking her DOWN! The third? Well, as they say, the third one is the charm and she deflects it straight back at Odin who goes down HARD!

That leaves 2 more Valkyrie who have more loyalty than sense as they charge Xena. Xena goes into a ZEN mode, like something out of season 4's "Paradise Found" and dispatches them without even looking at them.

Meanwhile, somewhere nearby Gabrielle is chasing down Brunhilda, who is intent on killing Xena to prove herself to Gabrielle. (Its "stalker" logic, don't try to understand it!)

http://images.yuku.com/image/jpg/27316c6a669cbe7f9a7c426112b1d2d4e2b5dc16_r.jpg

Gabrielle: "Brunhilda, you can't win. Listen to me. This is wrong. Can we just, let's just talk about this!" (Suddenly 3 Valkyrie come running up to them, swords drawn)
Brunhilda: "Get back."

Brunhilda pushes Gabrielle back as the Valkyrie attack. The first is tossed aside, and ends up in Gabrielle's face. The Bard has her sais out and battles the Valkyrie efficiently, finally knocking her out. Two other Valkyrie attack Brunhilda and are killed for their troubles.

(They both hear Grindl/Grinhilda's angry roar)
Gabrielle: "Xena."
Brunhilda: "They're gonna kill her before I get a chance to prove my love for you."
Gabrielle: (Gabby has had ENOUGH and she grabs Brunhilda by the shoulders to shake some sense into her) "What are you fighting for? You want to win my love? You're going to shed blood for what? For me? You call that love? You're sick."

Xena is terrorizing first Grindl then the head Valkyrie then Odin and finally Grindl yet again. I loved the way she just punched the Valkyrie and she flew across the swamp. She did a similar thing with Grindl, but to be fair she DID use her left hand with the ring of POWER to send Grindl packing.

Then she stops and hears a voice call out to her...

Gabrielle's Voice: (in the distance) "Xena!"
(And she turns and vaults herself over the head of Odin, and runs off into the forest. The head Valkyrie is ready to chase after her, but Odin restrains her)
Odin: "Let her go!"
HeadValkyrie: "But she has the ring!"
Odin: (Smug bastard!) "But right now it's killing what she values the most."

(I got to say, the first time I saw this, I really worried WHAT that meant!)

Xena is jogging through the forest, smacking the underbrush out of her way with the sword, when she hears a woman's voice call to her. Its NOT Gabrielle's...

Brunhilda: (Well, she hasn't drawn her sword yet, that's a good sign!) "Xena. Odin will bring all of his forces upon Gabrielle until you give up that ring. You have to trust me. It's the..." (She sees the ring on Xena's left hand) "...you've put the ring on your finger. But Xena, you haven't forsaken love. Take it off!"
Xena:
(Acting distinctly in a very NONXena like way, she tries to hide her left hand behind and beside her) "I don't know what you're talking about."
Brunhilda: (Realization dawns, and for ONCE its not how this affects her obsession re: her & Gabrielle) "The curse is already working."
Xena: (Looks around, fright starting to creep into her psyche) "I don't know how I got here. What's my name? What's my name?"
Brunhilda:
(Continues to press) "You've lost your memory, your sense of self. What about Gabrielle?"
Xena:
(Face frightened) "I don't know her."
Brunhilda: (She sees the truth. Without the Warrior Princess, Odin's path to the ring is clear) "Xena, give me the ring."
Xena: (Suddenly possessive, though she doesn't remember the reason) "Why does everybody want my ring?"
Brunhilda: (Her hand outstretched, simply asking.. NOT demanding) "Xena, give me the ring and everybody will leave you alone." (Xena drops her sword and pulls the ring off her finger to give it to Brunhilda) "Thank you."

Brunhilda leaves Xena behind. A confused woman with no memory of her past. It was soooo telling to watch her pick up that shiny round chakram off her hip and examine it like it was an ornament. Remember when I asked how she could catch it without cutting her hand? Tonight we realize how sharp it is when just holding it "wrong" causes the blood to run down her wrist and arm. Xena realizes what's going on and simply drops the bloody thing next to the useless sword, and walks away.

What was Brunhilda thinking, when she walked back to find Gabrielle? Was she wondering what could have possessed Xena to put the ring on her finger? Did she realize the truth... that Xena did it to save Gabrielle.

Gabrielle had asked her..."You want to win my love? You're going to shed blood for what? For me? You call that love?" But the Valkyrie didn't have an answer for the woman she loved. She didn't have an answer, that is , until Xena showed her by example. Its not who you are willing to kill, its what you are willing to sacrifice... for love.

For those without broadband...

Gabrielle's Voice: "Xena!"
Brunhilda:
"Gabrielle."
Gabrielle: "Brunhilda, I am going to find Xena."
Brunhilda: "Xena won't know you."
Gabrielle: "Won't know... won't know me? [Snickers] What are you talking about?"
Brunhilda: "She put on the ring."
Gabrielle: "No."
Bru: "And she lost what she values most, you, the memories of you and the woman that you helped her to become."
Gabrielle: "No."
(And after so many false starts, so many 1 on 1 tutorials with Gabrielle and with Xena, the Valkyrie finally "gets it".)
Brunhilda: "Here. " (She places Xena's ring into Gabrielle's hand, closing the Bard's fingers over it) "This ring is too powerful to fall into undeserving hands, and so are you. But I can't protect in this form, not from Odin, and he and Grinhilda will stop at nothing. They'll kill everthing associated with Xena."
Gabrielle: (Still reeling from the implication of Xena's sacrifice) "In this form?"
Brunhilda: (Smiles sweetly, finally doing something for her love, instead of for herself) "I'll become an eternal flame for you. Only your true soulmate will be able to pass through the fire. You'll be safe." [Chants in a foreign tongue as she turns herself into a pillar of fire that stretches to the high heavens] "See, Gabrielle? You have changed me."

http://www.xenaville.com/eps/s6/ring.jpg

The pillar of fire widens its diameter until its a good 15 feet wide and encircles Gabrielle. As it passes over her, the Warrior's red skirt and top are transformed into a diaphenous gold and ivory gown, and her silver necklace/arm bands are traded for a gold leafy crown. Gabrielle eventually lies down on the raised flat rock nearby, an altar to transcedental love. As she falls asleep, her hand opens to reveal the ring of power within.

When last we saw him, Beowulf had been run through with the Valkyrie's sword, so we can be forgiven for thinking he was dead. But come ON! This is a Warrior of LEGEND, and we know THEY don't die easily on this show! We see him stir, and finally stand as he goes in search of Xena and Gabrielle. Instead he finds Xena's sword, and the bloody chakram. He calls for Xena... but hears no answer.

The dvd interviews with the playwright were fun, especially when he admitted coming up to Rob Tapert (the producer) and saying... "Rob, I have Xena alone, in the woods, walking around, suffering from amnesia... and I don't know how to end it."

Rob's answer?

Xena: (Stumbles through the forest, frightened of the noises she hears) "I can hear you laughin' at me." ( finally she falls to her knees and looks up to the sky...) Who am I? Please tell me. Who am I?!"

I've been laughing over some old interviews...

From 1997... the "Star" herself. http://www.xenafan.com/articles/scifiuniverse/ Loved her daughter's opinion of the action figure doll.

This one's from near the end of season 5 with Lucy Lawless. http://xenaville.com/articles/stuff.html

After the way he began the piece, I really loved the way the author allows himself to be "deflated" at the end. :guffaw:

For Joxer fans: Ted Raimi: http://xenaville.com/articles/xpose_ted.html

Renee, a couple years after it ends: http://dvd.ign.com/articles/441/441518p1.html

For those who know how the series ends... here's Lucy, Renne, Rob and RJ after the finale has been shown... http://xenaville.com/articles/tvzone_AUG.html
