Any Xena:WP fans on the boards?

Since I suspect my next recap won't hit till Friday... I thought I'd leave you guys with something a "little bit" different.

Tonight I read my second Leslie Ann Miller Xena fanfic, and I must say, without a doubt, it was freaking awesome! :bolian: :bolian: :bolian:

The story is set about 20 years after the finale, so if you haven't watched all the way through, "don't go there" yet. :)

On the other hand, if you are familiar with all 6 seasons, ESPECIALLY season 6, then may I recommend "What Mother Never Told Me".

http://xenafiction.net/scrolls/leslie_ann_miller_what_mother_never_told_me.html

For people who don't want to "see anything" they didn't see on Xena, worry not, you won't. ;)

For people who want a wonderful epilogue to a favorite series, I'll bet dollars to donuts that you'll find it here. :techman:

I don't know who Ms Miller is and I'm not "drumming up business" for her websites, but her story telling skill is worthy of Xena's own writers.

Pity TPTB couldn't recognize it and give us THIS story via that impossible fan dream of a post series movie. :sigh:

My favourite Xena fanfic is the 'Death of Gabrielle', 40 years after 'Friend in Need' Gabby is dying back in Potidea where she retired to live with Lila and Sarah and all the surviving characters or their children come to pay tribute to her, real, tear jerker

No sorry, I don't think the website I read it on exists any more

Yeah, my googling has been unsuccessful thus far, though I have found a couple "ok" stories in the search.

"Things my Mother never told me" is head and shoulders above the rest, so far.

You would probably love it, since Gabrielle figures in it so prominently.

Love the build up through the story...

Your mother's on the way...

Your mother's coming...

Keep holding on, she's almost here...

and Then FINALLY... after a "whirring sound splits the air..." we hear those blessed words.

"Your Mom's here." :bolian:

And Saturn5, they're not talking about "Xena". ;)

Episode 108 season 5 #18 "Antony & Cleopatra"

(AKA: The REAL reason Crixus did unto Lucretia what he did during the final scene of the finale of "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" ;) )

And just a "minor" observation on the LACK of my observation skills. When I do these recap/reviews, I often check out Whoosh.org for things I've missed. Well, tonight whoosh has proved to me that I'm not "looking" at my actresses close enough since I missed Gabrielle's areola in Eli's death scene earlier this season AND I missed the fact the Xena/Cleopatra was "cold" in this ep ;) in that thin white dress she worethroughout the majority of the ep.

What can I say? Mea Culpa. (NO! I didn't run upstairs to check it out on the dvd. )

(I'm sure Forbin WOULD have helped me out, but is just too busy rewinding "Lifeblood" to see Selma again. )

TPTB broke their mold this time. They didn't give us "30-45" sec of comedy before hitting us over the head with tragedy. They DID give us a fair amount of comedy sprinkled throughout, and enough "sex" to keep us distracted (or keep me distracted) from looking closely at the front of Xena/Cleopatra's dress.

Set up.

Queen Cleopatra is assassinated by an asp wrapped in a scroll that supposedly contained a message from Rome. The message was clear. DIE! But a Queen isn't going to oblige the assassins that easily, and scribbles a note before she dies, and instructs her slave to "bring this to Xena". The happy news for the slave was that Xena wasn't that far away in Egypt and was traveling to find Cleopatra.

Oh, and before you ask... NO they didn't leave baby Eve with the Amazons or Joxer. They left her with CYRENE (woo hoo!) in Alexandria. ( We see neither hide nor hair of Grandmother or grandbaby all ep, nor even hear of them after the teaser.)

The teaser wasn't much of a teaser... "are we going?" asks Gabrielle, as if she didn't know. :cardie:

Well, I guess there was something awesome about the teaser... Cleopatra sent Marc Antony a rug/carpet as a "welcome to Egypt" gift.

Antony: (To his guards/2nd in command) "Dismissed." (Reads the note that came with the gift) "`Will Rome enter Egypt?'" (He looks at the rolled up carpet, and kicks it once to unroll...)
Xena/Cleopatra: (A beautiful black haired woman, naked except for the gold chains encircling her body, is lying before him. She's face down at first... then raises her head to stare down Marc Antony.) "I am Cleopatra... Queen of Egypt... Slave of Rome "

TEASER ENDS:

Va Va Va Voom!

And THIS lady just had a baby a few months ago! :bolian:

Also from whoosh.org:

<B>06-11-00. In the June 2000 issue of Chakram, the newsletter of the Official Xena Fan Club, Robert Tapert was interviewed:
Interviewer: There have been some pretty hot scenes between Xena and Ares lately.
</B>
Robert Tapert: We have an episode coming up that's the most sexually predatory story we've ever told. And if I have any concern, it's over that.
Interviewer: Predatory?
Tapert: Xena uses sex as a weapon. "Amphipolis" was the first time we've ever done that. We do it again in "Antony and Cleopatra". It didn't bother me with Ares in "Amphipolis" because it was part of Xena's ruse.

Antony & Cleopatra (Xena style) Act 1

So. The real Cleopatra (Not Firefly's Gina Torres this time) is dead, murdered in her goat milk bath by an asp rolled into a Roman scroll delivered to the Queen.

Before she died, she sends for Xena who, Fortunes have granted, was already enroute from Alexandria. (For some reason, Xena claims she "owes it" to Cleo... not sure why unless its just one powerful woman looking out for another. In their last meeting (King of Assassins) it was Cleo who "owed" something to Xena for saving her life. BUT I digress. ;)

Xena takes on Cleo's identity and has herself delivered as a "gift" to Marc Antony inside a carpet. (Yowza! Even without the purple eyes of that OTHER famous Cleopatra!)

And this is where I again tell you, pull out your dvds/vhs or call netflix cuz you REALLY want to watch. NO! Not the gorgeous woman in gold chains... but her EXPRESSIONS while she verbally fences with Antony.

XenaASCleo: "Cat got your tongue?"
Antony: [Chuckles] "Queen Cleopatra... your reputation for not wasting time. 'tis well deserved."
XenaASCleo: "Egypt is yours, Antony. Won't you free me?" (Sensual kiss ensues, during which Xena passes the key to her chains into Antony's mouth.)
Antony: "Is that what you want? Surely... this is about you capturing me."
XenaASCleo: "If that was the plan, I would have dressed for the occasion." (He unlocks the chains that bind her) Ah-h. Hm-m. Now I am free-- and you?" (He gives her a royal blue cloth to wrap around herself)
Antony: "Let's just say your conquest is not yet complete."
XenaASCleo: "Well, of course not. And who could expect the great Antony to surrender easily. I simply thought that, you might be the type to enjoy surprises."
Antony: "Your guessing serves you well, Queen, but I came here to form an alliance with you one based on trust... and openness."
XenaASCleo: "I think we got the openness covered. And as for trust, well I really couldn't have come here in a more vulnerable state, now, could I? So perhaps you should trust me. Come to my palace." (She turns to walk away) "I think I can find a bed for you."

Xena brings Antony "home" to her palace, but there's a problem. BRUTUS, Antony's rival in all things, is already there, demanding to see Cleopatra. You should see his face, when the dark haired white & gold clad Greek slave that comes to deal with his insolence is none other than GABRIELLE herself!

Shiana: "Brutus-- is she expecting you?"
Brutus: "No, she's not, but I fear for her safety."
Gabrielle: "What does Cleopatra have to be afraid of, Brutus?"
Brutus [Whispers]: "Gabrielle."
Gabrielle: "I'm alive." (Turns to Cleo's "other" slaves) "I'll handle this."
Brutus: (They are alone) "You survived the crucifixion."
Gabrielle: (To the man who delivered her to the prison and promised there would NOT be a crucifixion) "You should have been there."
Brutus: "What are you doing here?"
Gabrielle: "I'm paying a visit to an old friend."
Brutus: "Where's Xena?"
Gabrielle: "She's with Cleopatra."
Brutus: "Well, then I'll see them both." (He obviously has never heard of "subtext" ;) )
Gabrielle: "It's not a good time, Brutus. I'll relay your concerns about her safety."

Of course, being a Roman General, he refuses to cool his heels for long, and goes looking for Cleopatra just as Xena is leading Antony into the palace. Shiana intercepts her with a warning, and Antony is led off by Shiana for the "cooks tour" of the palace as Xena changes into her leathers to greet Brutus.

If you think this is getting complicated, just WAIT until you see the Cleo clad Xena sleeping in the Queen's bedchambers (ALONE!) and a hooded figure creep up on her just before a series of Molotov cocktails come flying through the open balconies to light up her room. Xena already has "trapped" (MAN this is SUCH a fanboy/fangirl fantasy THIS week  ) the intruder on her bed as the fireballs begin. She's very "heroic" in her attempt to stop the fire AND to save the intruder who's trapped by the flames.

Who's the intruder, you might ask?

Octavius, grand nephew and adopted son of one Julius Caesar himself, and arch enemy of the Roman General running down the hall towards Cleo's bedroom as we speak, Marc Antony.

XenaASCleo: "Where'd you think you were going?"
Octavius: "Away from him. He wants me dead. Those assassins were after me."
XenaASCleo: "Oh, well aren't you the center of attention! Isn't it more likely they were after me? It was my bedroom they torched. "
Octavius: "That's why we must ally. They want us both dead."

Don't you just hate teenagers egos sometimes. :rommie:

Speaking of egos... after resisting her charms on his ship and later in Cleo's bath  (Hey, I can't remember to tell you EVERYTHING, can I?) MArc Anotony's resolve starts to crumble in the corridor after Octavius is led away to Cleo's dungeon.

XenaASCleo: (To Marc Antony as Octavius is led away) "How do I know that you aren't somehow involved in this?"
Antony: "I came here... to put out the fire. We have unfinished business-- you and I."
(Antony kisses Cleo goodbye and leaves her with her female slaves and one very interested Bard )
Xena: (To Gabby's unspoken question) "Yes?"
Gabrielle: "I'm losing sight of your plan, Xena. Are you going to flirt him to death?"
Xena: "I'm getting him to trust me, so I can do what I want with him."
Gabrielle: "Be careful. He's your type."
Xena: "You think?"
Gabrielle:
"What's this unfinished business?'"
Xena: "He's going to try to seduce me into letting him use Cleopatra's navy."
Gabrielle: "And then?"
Xena: (Back to torturing her favorite bard) "And then I'll have him on his knees...figuratively speaking, of course."
Gabrielle: "Of course."

Antony & Cleopatra Continued yet again.

Back to the end of act 2 and back to "Yowza! land again.

Whew. Got to turn the thermostat down.

What did Rob Tapert say in the commentary, this was the ep that he felt got Xena back on track? The pregnancy was over and with it all those pesky restrictions on what Lucy could or should do, and the baby was off in ALexandria with Grandmom Cyrene so SHE wasn't an impediment.

Hmmm, in the interview documented at whoosh, he also mentions how this was the first time (this and Amphipolis under Seige) was the first time Xena used sex as a weapon. I disagree only SLIGHTLY on this point. Xena has frequently used HER sex as a weapon, either to lull her enemies into complacency (Think season 2's Miss Amphipolis) or to distract them from their goal. (Just think season 1, "Altared States" when the very naked Xena stood up from that mountain lake, water running off her and walked up to the soldier manhandling the kid. "Didn't your mother ever tell you, its not polite to stare!" BOOM! goes her fist and down goes the soldier.)

But Mr Tapert is also right. Except for bits and pieces here and there, like season 2's Orphan of War where she's teasing/negotiating Dagnine for the return of her son, she doesn't really use "sex" per se all that much. Then again, as she told Gabby also in season 2, she does like to mix things up... "It gets" her juices going!

Back to Yowza land! (Go to 6:02 and just enjoy!)

LOVED the part where Gabrielle CAN'T take it anymore and walks in to "break things up". (Also loved the comments from Lucy TO her character on screen re: "then why are you so mad?)

Gabrielle/Iris [Clears throat]: "Queen Cleopatra-- don't forget your meeting with your advisors."
XenaAsCleo: "Ah, my advisors. Yes, they're such busybodies."
Antony: "Rome wasn't built in a day." (Kisses her yet again, and leaves Cleo with Iris.)
Xena: (Chastises her "busybody" partner) "What do you think you were doing? I was in complete control."
Gabrielle: (Doubtful!) "How far were you going to let that go?"
Xena: "Until he begged for my navel."
Gabrielle:
"Your navy?"
Xena:
"I know what I'm doing."
Gabrielle: "Xena, what happens if he's the one who killed Cleopatra?"
Xena: "Then he's the one I'll kill if I have to. I have no real feelings for him, Gabrielle, believe me." (This is where Lucy interrupts from the couch on the commentary.)
Shiana: "This is from Antony." (Hands a stem full of white orchids to Xena)
Xena: "Really?"
Shiana: "He invites you to meet him tomorrow night, under the pyramids."
Xena: "Tell him I'll be there." (Shiana walks away as Xena holds the orchids to her face) "Got him right where I want him."

ACT 3:

Thankfully, the observant people at Whoosh have alerted me to something historically accurate (for a change?) It is night and we see Xena walk up to Antony's campfire near one of the buildings on the sphynx's "courtyard". We see the sphynx in the background, and he STILL has his nose!

Ok... back to the Xena using sex as a weapon, story.

Antony: "Our time in this world is brief. Kingdoms, they're mere clay. Will Rome surpass their (the pyramids) majesty? I don't know. In a place like this, a man is truly small."
XenaASCleo: "Why did you come to Egypt? My navy."
Antony: "Yes... but that has changed."
XenaASCleo: "Changed how?"
Ant: "I don't want you to give me your navy. You would always suspect, that that is all I wanted from you."
XenaASCleo: "So, what do you want from me?"
Antony: "Your love."
XenaASCleo: "My love won't help you in a fight against Brutus."
Antony: "The first time I saw you, I knew a man would give up a kingdom for such a woman. There is nothing that I have learned since that would change my mind."
XenaASCleo: "Nothing?"
Anonyt: "Nothing."
XenaASCleo: "Antony."

Lucy Lawless is wonderful in this episode's commentary, asking at various times "why" is Xena is acting so mad or here why is she crying? and having her director and her producer try to explain Xena's motivations. I also love it when she is critiquing the lovemaking scene that follows the above dialogue where Xena's body language is "all wrong" if Cleo/Xena is really falling for the bad boy. Great points Lucy! :bolian: Although the practical person in me would say the bodies were arranged thus to allow the two actors the ability to jump up quickly as the opposing Roman soldiers come running in to kill them. :)

Which means, we FINALLY get to see a FIGHT!

Again, loved the commentary track here, where Michael Hurst points out the actor (Manu Bennet) fights full throttle and even knocked out a stunt man. The stunties were loath to act with him because of this. Later in the final battle, Renee points out he even knocked out Lucy's stunt double and Lucy admitted after a few takes of the two of them fighting (Lucy and Manu) she said to herself... "no no no... not a good idea." Lucy really enjoyed his performance as Marc Antony and admitted.. "Method actors are great to watch on screen, but are hell to live with!"

I suspect his "full throttle fighting style" came in handy when he plays Crixus on Spartacus. (Oh by the way... when I LOOK at Marc Antony, I don't see Crixus. When I HEAR him speak, however... its DEFINATELY Crixus!)

While Xena was with Crixus, Gabrielle was "interviewing" the young Octavius in Cleopatra's prison. She discovers he has potential and goes to meet Xena after her return from the pyramids.

On Zoe Bell's "Double dare" Documentary http://www.hulu.com/watch/179429/double-dare ... she talks about the dark makeup TPTB make Xena and thus Xena's stunt double wear. I never really "noticed (there it is again, my failing) the dark makeup as much as I did in this next night scene between the fair Gabrielle and the dark Xena. It really IS striking. :techman:

Gabrielle: (Follows her out onto a balcony) "Xena?"
Xena: (Looking only up to the stars) "You were right, Gabrielle, I do have a soft spot for bad boys. Even worse is a bad boy who loves like a fool."
Gabrielle: (The friend kicks in, ready for yet another heartfelt outpouring) "What happened?"
Xena: "He wouldn't take Cleopatra's navy. He says he wants my love instead." (Turns to look at Gabrielle, as all the subtext fans in the audience have a cow. ;) ) "I think he means it."
Gabrielle: (Being practical, not worried in the least, from my read on her expression) "Maybe you can enlist him as an ally."
Xena: "Well, what will happen when he finds out that I'm not Cleopatra? That I've duped him all this time?"
Gabrielle: (She doesn't have an answer) "What are you going to do?"
Xena: "I can't let him get control of the empire. There's plenty
of blood on those hands of his. He's not afraid to shed it. I know that. And what about Octavius?"
Gabrielle: "He's idealistic. His heart's in the right place, Xena."
Xena: "I wonder if he and Antony can work together."

No... Xena, they can't.

(In Cleo's palace, Antony is standing on a carpet depicting the "known" world. XenaASCleo walks in languidly, leans against the wall and starts to tease the Roman.)

XenaASCleo: "Making travel plans?"
Antony: "I'm trying to outguess Brutus."
XenaASCleo: "And if you defeat him, what will you do.?"
Antony: "I will execute him-- and all his men."
XenaASCleo: "All of them? Even the common soldier?"
Antony: "There must be consequences for opposing Marc Antony; death, executions, it is the Roman way and I am Roman."
XenaASCleo: "Yes, I see. And what about Octavius? I hear he's a good man."
Antony: "He may be a good boy, but I cannot let him live to be a good man." (Tapert points out, THIS lets Xena off the hook. She knows He will kill Octavius!)
XenaASCleo: "Antony, take my navy. No, I insist. This gesture of yours is very sweet, but I get the point. I know that you love me. I've had reports that Brutus' fleet is approaching the mouth of the Nile. Draw him into battle there. At the appropriate time I will reinforce you. Brutus will be crushed."
Antony: "Rome... is eternally grateful."

Meanwhile, Brutus has FINALLY been granted an audience with Queen Cleopatra in her throne room. As he draws near, he sees the Greek slave standing next to her and sees the woman on the throne is someone he knows.

XenaASCleopatra: (To Brutus) Boo.

Not only is it someone he knows, its someone who's figured out who killed Cleopatra, but strangely enough Xena is STILL willing to negotiate with Brutus. What is even stranger, is that Brutus believes her! :wtf:

Xena: "It seems we have a common enemy-- Marc Antony."
Brutus: "You see what a dangerous man he is."
Xena: "Oh, yes I do. His fleet is moving toward the mouth of the Nile. You meet him there and I'll reinforce. Together we'll chop him into little pieces."
Brutus: "Why should I trust you?"
Gabrielle: "I'll go with you."
Brutus: "I can't ask for a better guarantee than that. You won't regret this." (He leaves)
Xena: (To herself) "I won't regret this."
Gabrielle: "The trap's been set. Perhaps you won't have to... "
Xena: "...Kill Antony?"

So, the final stage is set. Gabrielle will be with Brutus on his flagship, to signal the Egyptian fleet when to join the attack. Xena will be on Marc Antony's flagship, to do the same.. and strangely enough... Shiana, the slave Cleopatra sent to find Xena, is with Octavius on Cleopatra's flagship... awaiting the signals.

With all these beautiful women around, one can be forgiven if one is "distracted".

Antony: "Perhaps, when we have dealt with Brutus, a journey on the scented waters of the Nile, on a golden barge with oars of silver, which we'll keep stroked to the tune of flutes, and make the waters which they beat to follow faster as though amourous of each stroke."
XenaASCleo: "Antony, we're about to go into a major sea battle."
Antony: "With Egypt's navy... we cannot lose."

And if not distracted by beauty, why not by power?

Brutus: "Once we catch Antony, you'll give Xena the signal?"
Gabrielle: "Yes."
Brutus: "Then we'll see who will become Rome."
Gabrielle: "You've become an ambitious man, Brutus."
Brutus: "People change, Gabrielle."
Soldier's Voice: "Higher! Higher!"
Brutus: "I remember when you spoke only of peace, and now you're a warrior."
Gabrielle: "And you're a murderer."

And if not distracted by power, then perhaps by destiny?

Octavius: "Nervous?"
Shiana: "Terrified. How about you?"
Octavius: "Definitely nervous. Why are you here, Shiana?"
Shiana: "I promised my mistress I'd see her murderers brought to justice."
Octavius: "I can't believe Cleopatra's gone. Death has no respect for rank."
Shiana: "You're about to step onto the stage of history, Octavius. Are you ready?"
Octavius: "Yes. I feel I was born for this moment. I realize now it's my destiny to rule Rome."

It was a REALLY COOL battle!

Brutus drove his ship into Antony's ship broadside. He and Gabrielle and his men jumped on board Antony's ship and went to it. XenaASCleo is on the upperdeck, watching the fighting below. Marc Antony wades into it like a farmer cutting wheat with a scythe, and when he loses his sword he just rips off his helmet and uses IT to pummel his opponents.

Suddenly, Brutus gets word that the Egyptian navy is attacking HIS fleet and he truns on Gabrielle and starts beating the crap out of her. There's no nice way to say it. Think "Najara and Xena" and you'll get an idea of how bad Gabby got it. But, unlike "Crusader", there was no best friend to save her when Brutus readied his killing blow, and so Gabrielle had to do it herself, picking up a sword at the last moment and swinging it purposefully to cut his throat. (Up comes the blood, bubbly from the mouth, a trademark of director Michael AKA "Cup of blood" Hurst!)

As Brutus falls backwards, he sees Julius's Nemesis STILL standing on the upperdeck and cries out one last curse, "XENAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" as he dies. This gets the attention of Crixus... errr I mean Marc Antony and he turns to look where Brutus was looking and he sees the "Egyptian" Queen wielding a deadly sword on the soldiers attacking up the stairs towards her. One of his men runs up to tell him that the Egyptian navy is now attacking BOTH Roman fleets and he FINALLY catches on! :klingon:

Antony: (To his man, incredulously.) "Both Roman fleets?! (He fights his way up the stairs to stand in front of Xena for one last moment before he tries to kill her.) Xena. You win my trust, my love and then you betray, everything." (They fight.)
XenaASCleo: (She tries to stop him with his name, as she stopped him from killing Octavius outside her bedchamber.) "Antony-- "
(It didn't work, and they fight yet again, but this time her sword finds his heart.)
Antony: (Face to face, before he falls away from her and her sword) "I did... love you."

NOW you know why he did unto Lucretia as he did in the finale of Blood and Sand". )

The final shot on the ship, from high in the crows nest, was awesome, Gabrielle down on the main deck, her white gown covered in blood, and Xena on the upper deck, her white gown covered in blood, and the rain coming down, washing everything away.

(NO, I'm NOT going to nitpick about how our girls got to safety since they are on Roman ships and the Romans know the Egyptians are attacking... I just can't be bothered by that kind of "logic" when the damned thing LOOKS so kewl!!!!!!!! )

I didn't care for the political message at the end since I doubt the real Cleo wanted democracy for the Egyptians... but I did like the final shot of Gabrielle just standing beside her best friend as she looks out towards the pyramids.

Their's IS a complicated relationship and that's why I like it so much. She's not about to nitpick it with the Warrior Princess, and so why should I? :mallory:

Wow! LOONNNGGGG review! I'll keep mine short. Even with Ceaser gone Xena still can't resist meddling in Roman affairs. Like Gina Torres much better than this one but maybe she was busy (she also played a recurring character on Hercules), nice to have a payoff for Brutus, when we see him here he's a very different person from the honourable man we first see in past eps

That's why I call them recap/reviews. :rommie:

And how can one NOT revel in the sexiness of Marc Antony when one has the chance? Xena certainly did!

Since I agree with Tapert on his opinion of the next three eps, I fear THIS recap may be considered one of my "shorter" ones.

;)

And wasn't Gina Torres cast to play on that "Cleopatra 2525" with Jennifer Skye (Amarice) at this time? She probably just didn't have the time to do both.

As for the "honourable" Brutus, don't forget he led YOUR favorite warrior bard to prison AND left her there to be crucified.

Serves him right, to get slashed by the woman he left to die on a cross.

Teaser opens with an auction in a tavern. Next item up for bid? The last known scroll from the Bard Of Potadiea. Then the big reveal, the man sitting at the bar with his back to us is Joxer, the older less mighty version. He examines the scroll, recognizes the handwriting, and spends his wife's nest egg, all 65 dinars to possess it.

Needless to say, MEG isn't pleased and he runs out to the barn to read the scroll in peace. There he's followed by his young son and daughter (Congrats Meg & Joxer! You see, Meg, Xena was right!) and they curl up against him to hear him read the final story of a "beautiful Warrior Princess".

OldJoxer: `Her, uh... her celebrations... at Thebes... in Egypt... were cut short... because Xena... the mighty... warrior princess... fought... both night and day, for the life of her newborn child... as she continued to sing the rage... of her Olympian foes. Their ceaseless battles finally drove her to the FATES... in search... of answers.'"

Xena walks alone into the Temple of the FATES, with Eve on her hip.

Clotho: "You wish us to speak for your child. Your child, Xena... "
Atropos: "... will bring forth the twilight... and usher in a new beginning."
Xena: "Yes, I heard. I was hoping you could humor me with a date."
Clotho: "The twilight will occur in time."
Xena: "That's not very specific."
Lachesis: "The time depends on you, Xena."
Xena: "What do you mean? It's me that determines when the twilight begins? How?" (Gabrielle arrives, by the way we can tell from her face she's been in a recent battle)
Atropos: "You must die, Xena."
Clotho: "Only in the essence of death, will the child find salvation and the twilight be set in motion. Until then, a storm without end lies upon your path, and hers."
Gabrielle: "You're saying that, the sooner Xena dies, the faster Eve brings about the fall of the gods? [Whispers] No [Normal Voice] Xena, let's go. (Xena doesn't move) Hey what are you doing? You're not listening to them? Xena, you have said we always determine our own fate. It's not written for us. You've always believed that."
Xena: (Keeping her eyes on the FATES) "I still believe that, Gabrielle. So do they. It's the only way. I have to die, Gabrielle."

Now THAT was a TEASER! :techman:

As Joxer reads on, Xena and Gabrielle have yet another encounter with the gods... and although they come out on top yet again, Athena succeeds in cutting Xena up a fair bit and sows a little doubt in Gabrielle's minds re: Xena's trust in the Battling Bard's abilities.

OldJoxer's Voice: "`After narrowly escaping with our lives, we took shelter for the night in the company of Octavius... the new leader of the Roman army... and a new ally... unknown to the gods."
Octavius: (They are in his tent, and he's squatting down to tease baby Eve) "Can I get you two anything else?"
Xena: (Shaking a medicine bottle in her hand) "No, Octavius... thank you."
Octavius: "You never have to thank me, Xena. I owe my life to you and Gabrielle." (He leaves the three of them alone)
Xena: (Motions to the wounded Bard) "All right. Come here." (Begins to dab the medicine on Gabrielle's facial laceration)
Gabrielle: (The Warrior Bard jumps) "Ow! Ow. What is that?"
Xena: (Smiles in her usual torture way) "It's poison." (Gabby grabs Xena's hand to stop her) "Only if you drink it. A little dab'll stop the spread of infection."
Gabrielle: "Where did you get that?"
Xena: (Applies it to her own wounds, recieved at the end of Athena's blade) "Mom's medicine cabinet. Hs-s-s-s-s-s-s! Ah-h-h-h-h-h-h."
Gabrielle: "Xena, what Athena said about, um... your not trusting me with Eve... "
Xena: "Hey, it's not a matter of trust where Athena's concerned. Giving Eve to you would have bought her a few more seconds, but we both know they would have killed her if they could have regardless of whose arms she was in. We got lucky. She's just a baby."

The gods get together to talk strategy but come up with nothing beyond the obvious. Xena and Eve must die. Xena, on the other hand, comes up with a bonafide plan that initially looks completely nonsensical. She goes to fight Hephastus in his forge, and she nearly loses! He's really hurt her and she's down waiting for the killing blow when who should appear but Celesta, (Death herself) ready to escort her to the underworld.

I love it when its GABRIELLE that comes to the rescue! As she distracts Hephastus, Xena uses his chains to bind Celesta before helping Gabrielle toss that other pesky god into the lava pit.

Gabrielle: "That was close."
Celesta: "Xena... what are you doing?"
Xena: "Check her hands."
Gabrielle: "It worked. She can't touch us."
Xena: "Good."
Celesta: "Your confrontation with Hephaestus... that's exactly what you wanted... how you lured me to you."
Xena: "Believe me, lady, if there was a better way for us to hook up, I'd have done it."
Celesta: "Xena, how could you?"
Xena: "Gabrielle, get her outta here."

I love the way Xena looks to be in so much pain as she bends to pick up Celesta's candle and follows Gabrielle out of the forge. For once it looks like she really DID just fight with a god instead of a human sparring partner.

Five years ago Xena and Gabrielle freed Celesta from King Sissyphus's clutches when he tried to "kill death" to grant himself and the rest of human kind immortatlity. But it would be immortality without health, and so mankind would ultimately suffer more. Celesta is shocked that these two women would have changed their minds on such a fundamental topic, and begs them to release her.

Xena: "Lady, since we last met, I've decided you cause a lot more suffering than you end."
Celesta: "Death is nothing to fear, Xena... for I only visit those whose rightful time is... "
Xena: "Rightful time?! Who decides when it's the rightful time? You are at the beck and call of every warlord and murderer. Solon, my only son, his rightful time came when someone else decided it should and you came running, no questions asked. You didn't end the suffering of my little boy, Celesta. You stole his life, and Marcus and Lyceus."
Celesta: "Your brother."
Gabrielle: "Xena... "
Xena: [Interrupts Gabrielle with a wave of her impatient hand] "Lyceus, Lyceus, he wasn't just a brother, he
was my best friend. You know, growing up, he was everything to me. He accepted me for who and what I was. And if you hadn't taken him, he would have grown up to be something... "
Gabrielle [Interrupts] "Xena, don't do this."
Xena: [Whispers as the tears run down her face] "What?"
Gabrielle: "She's immortal. She'll never understand the pain of losing someone."
Xena: "Yes, she will. Yes, she will... 'cause you have a brother, too."
Celesta: "Yes Hades, he's my only family, the first to accept me for who and what I am. I may not agree with his recent actions, Xena, but... I believe he thinks he's doing what is right. He's always been true to his convictions, and... sometimes that makes him a little stubborn... but I believe it is his noblest quality. To lose him is... unthinkable."
Xena: "And what if he lost you? What would he say about that?"
Celesta: "I may never know." (And she starts to cry. Xena reaches up and wipes away a tear from each cheek)
Xena: "Death can end suffering, Celesta. Suffering just begins for those left behind. I won't allow it any longer. (She walks over to Gabrielle, who's still cradling Eve) I can't lose what's left of my family and I won't lose another child."

For reasons not immediately clear, we next see Gabrielle in a tavern, looking for Joxer. She's trying to get him to leave with her, but he's distracted by the silver clad archer babes from Athena's private guard. They are here to arrest him and use him as leverage with Xena. They are smart enough, believe it or not, to realize GABRIELLE is an even better hostage.

Xena: (She's securing the wagon with Celesta and Eve in it.) "Athena we were just going on a joy ride to celebrate being immortal. Oh, Celesta, well, it's too late for her, I'm afraid."
Athena: "I hope that's not true, Xena, for Gabrielle's sake."
Xena: "What have you done with her?"
Gabrielle: (The archers bring her forward) "Xena I'm sorry, I had no choice."
Athena: "It's very simple, Xena-- Gabrielle-- for Celesta."
Gabrielle: "Let the candle burn, Xena."
Athena: "Do that, Xena and your little girl will still be hunted for eternity. She may never know death, but I promise you she will never know peace."
Xena: "All right." (Goes to release Celesta)
Gabrielle: "No, Xena."
Xena: "Gabrielle, come on. It's all right."
Gabrielle: [Whispers] "All right."
Athena: "I'll be needing you, Celesta."
Celesta: "My presence is required elsewhere, Athena." (She splits as Ares appears, sitting on Xena's wagon seat, taking the reins of the horses in hand)
Ares: "Come on... give us a head start. I don't think that's too much to ask, do you, Sis?"
Athena: "I think it is." (Xena vaults into the wagon seat and takes the reins from Ares to urge the horses forward. Gabrielle is sitting in the back of the wagon, one hand on the baby's basket, the other hand on the last scroll she was writing on. Athena speaks to her archers and fellow gods) You know what to do. Let them clear the forest, first, then drive them to us."

Ares offers yet again to save Xena, the price is the same.. a child of his own. He gets the same answer and disappears. As they flee across the field towards a waiting Hades, Gabrielle loses the scroll over the edge of the bouncing wagon... and Old Joxer's story seems to end.

Girl: "What happened, Daddy?"
Old Joxer: "Uh-h-h-h-h-- well, it's the end of the scroll, Pumpkin, but it's not the end of the story."
Boy: "How do you know?"
Joxer: (Looking on from the edge of the forest at the wagon careening towards the edge of a cliff) "'Cause I was there."

The wagon is stopped at the edge of the precipice, and the gods are sending their firebolts at it. Gabrielle is still in the back, and seems to have fainted. Xena is bending backwards from the seat, calling/reaching for her, which the first time around I thought was VERY strange. The next bolt hits the wagon squarely and topples it over the cliff. The gods AND Joxer come running to look over the edge, and they see the burning wagon, and two bodies on the beach. One is stirring. First she looks to her right, where Gabrielle lies unmoving, then to her left where the wagon burns.

Xena: "Gabrielle? " (Gets up and runs towards the hopelessly burning wagon) Eve? Eve?! Eve? [Whispers] Eve. [Normal Voice] Eve? Oh-- oh. Oh!"

Then back to the unmoving body of Gabrielle. She stands up from Gabrielle's body and looks up the cliff to the three gods responsible and shouts defiantly as she draws her sword and tries to kill herself.

Ares: (He appears and grabs the sword away) "No, Xena... don't."

But she won't be denied. She takes the medicine bottle, the one from her mother's cupboard, and swallows it's contents whole before dying in his arms.

WHOA!

By the time Joxer can get down to them on the beach, they are gone. Ares has taking both bodies and disappeared. Octavius and his guard ride up to find Joxer alone.

Octavius: "The tears, Joxer... did you see her drink the tears?"
Joxer: "She drank poison, Octavius."
Octavius [and Old Joxer's Voice]: "But it wasn't poison."
Old Joxer's Voice: "You see, Xena never intended to kill death at all. It was Celesta's tears she really needed the essence of death, the only thing, Xena realized, that could simulate the appearance of their deaths to the gods... but only after convincing the gods that Eve had also been killed."

Loved the way Joxer explained the con, how Octavius spirited the babe from the wagon in the night, after Xena harvested Celesta's tears, how Gabrielle let herself be captured to give a credible reason for Xena releasing Celesta, and how Gabrielle drank the tears first in the wagon, before it went over the edge. NOW we understand why Xena was calling for/reaching for Gabrielle before the wagon toppled. She was protecting her in the fall so IT wouldn't break Gabrielle's neck.

It was an inspired plan, typical of Xena... but there was one little glitch.

ARES... GOD of WAR... is a hopeless ROMANTIC.

Final scene... we see him pick up Xena and disappear. He carries her into an ice cave, where there are two ice coffins. Gabrielle is already in one. He lays Xena in the second, and before closing the lid, he says...

Ares: "You're with her now. I handled you all wrong. I know that. She knew what you needed, unconditional and unselfish love and I couldn't give that to you. But I appreciated you in ways she never could, your rage, your violence, your beauty. When you sacrificed yourself for others, you were hers but when you kicked ass, you were mine. I love you, Xena."

Mea Culpa. (NO! I didn't run upstairs to check it out on the dvd. )

(I'm sure Forbin WOULD have helped me out, but is just too busy rewinding "Lifeblood" to see Selma again. )
No, but I'm on my way to watch Anthony & Cleopatra again! :techman:

Episode 110 season 5 # 20 "LIVIA"

There are certain iconic images repeated over and over in the fantasy/comic realm... and I am NOT ashamed to say that my fangirl heart SOARED when TPTB used such an image in the teaser of this ep.

Xena Eve, Livia:

The teaser starts with a minor battle, and the introduction of Ares new best girl, a Roman General named Livia... she's just been named successor to Augustus Caesar himself. But that's neither here nor there for this fan.

I'm waiting for what happens when the avalanche occurs, and opens a hole into the ice cave that is our favorite warriors's tomb. And the blessed sun shines down and hits the ice coffin, bringing with it a warmth unfelt for 25 years... and slowly the fingers start to twitch... and the head startes to turn... and maybe? Maybe the eyes try to open as the ice coffin's ice lid starts to crack... and those fingers... those fingers go beyond twitching. They meld themselves into a mighty fist and ...

THWACK!!!!!!!!!!!!

The fist is shoved upward and breaks free through the ice coffin's lid!

WARRIOR PRINCESS POWER!!!!!!!

Up comes the knee to continue her attempt at freedom, and finally the Warrior Princess pulls herself to the side of her coffin, dragging in air for the first time in a quarter century. Looking to her left, she sees her friend, similarily entombed, and tries to free her to no avail... until she sees her sword, its hilt adorned with her chakram, and she uses it to chop through the ice to get to Gabrielle.

With Gabrielle free, the two women quickly turn to their next problem.

Xena: "The baby... where's Eve?"
Gabrielle: "Octavius was supposed to bring her to us."
Xena: "Som'in's gone wrong. We've got to get outta here and find them." [Yells as she sends the chakram flying at the hole in the ceiling, widening their exit even more.]

The women walk off the mountain and still haven't figured out where they are. The first village they enter, gives them the bad news. They're not in Greece, they are at the foot of Mt Etna.

Gabrielle: "Mt. Etna? How did we get here?"
Xena: "Ares. Ares?! Come out! I know you're here, someplace."
Old Woman: "Beg pardon, but, uh, Ares hasn't been seen in these parts since the legend'ry Xena died about, ooh, 25 years ago."
Xena: (Stunned) "25 years."

TEASER ENDS:

Xena: "We gotta get to Rome?"
Gabrielle: "Why Rome?"
Xena: "Because that's where Octavius was headed. He'll know where
I can find Eve. You! Do you know anything about a Roman big shot named Octavius? He's probably a-a general, or a commander."
OldWoman: "Only commander I know of is Livia... the emperor's bitch."
Xena: [Whispers] "No."
OldWoman: "Excuse my language but when Augustus lets her slaughter harmless people, like the followers of Eli, I just lose my-- "

Interestingly, not only are they at the foot of Mt Etna, but enroute to Rome they discover some old friends... in a hostel decorated with Chakrams and sais, and paintings of 2 warrior women.

Meg's Voice: "I really recommend the beans." [Farts]
Customer: "Oh!"
Meg: "Pardon me."
Xena: "Meg-- it's Meg."
Gabrielle: (Looking at the overweight older woman) "No, Xena you were identical."
Meg: "Here, gimme that. I'll getcha a fresh one."
Gabrielle: "If I were you, I would lay off the starches."
Meg's Voice [Farts]: "Oh, pardon me again."
Meg [Sighs as she runs into the newcomers in the doorway]: "You know what? Shorty, you kinda look like her. Only Gabrielle wasn't so butch." (I don't care how many muscles Renee piles on for this show, or how short her hair gets... I could never think of her as being "butch".)
Joxer [Jox] "Meg! Go on, shake your moneymaker, will ya? We got bardburgers burnin' back there."
Meg: "Aw, hush up."
Jox: "You hush up!"
Meg: "No, you hush up!"
Jox: "Oh, yeah?! You hush up first!"
Meg: "I gave you the best chow-- "
Gabrielle: [Interrupts] "Joxer?"
Joxer:
"What?!" (Shouts as he and Meg turn to the women in the doorway)
Gabrielle: "Is that ... you?"
Joxer: [Whispers] "Gabrielle, Xena... " (He comes forward to hug both women)
Xena: "Joxer."

Loved meeting Argo's daughter, and Joxer's hunk a hunk a burning love son, but am still confused as to why he has to "delouse" his sword to escort the women to Rome.

There's a victory parade going on, for the Champion of Rome... LIVIA and Xena and Gabrielle split up for a while as Xena goes in search of Octavius. When she gets to the emperor's reviewing balcony, she realizes Octavus is none other than Augustus Caesar himself, and she penetrates his security to get up on the balcony with him.

Xena: "Ave, Caesar."
Man's Voice: "Rome rules the world!"
Octavius: "Xena!"
Xena:
"Octavius. Where's my daughter, Octavius?" (He looks down at the victory parade passing before him, and the subject of everyone's cheers)
Crowd's Voices: "Livia! Livia! All hail Livia! Livia! Livia! Livia! Livia! Livia! Livia!"
Xena: "That's her?"
Octavius:
"Livia... champion of Rome."
Xena: "That's Eve?"

After hearing Livia give due honors to her emperor, Xena pulls him aside for a tongue lashing.

Xena: "What have you done to her?"
Octavius: "Done? You saw... she's incredible."
Xena:
"She's a warrior for Rome!"
Octavius: "She's alive. Considering all of Mt. Olympus wanted to kill her... wanted to crush the bringer of twilight... what more did you expect?"
Xena: "I'll tell you what I expected... I expected to raise her myself! To show her a way beyond the blood and the violence!"
Octavius: "But you weren't there! She was sent away as a child and raised in the provinces with every advantage. She had the best tutors, the best training!"
Xena: "For what? I saw the slaves. She's a monster!"
Octavius:
"She's the greatest warrior Rome's ever known... and she's going to be my wife. (Xena grabs him viciously by the throat!) Uh!"
Xena: "No daughter of mine is going to marry Rome."
Octavius: "Uh, she doesn't know she's your daughter. I never told her."
Xena: "Then I will!"
Octavius: "Why? So the gods can hunt her again? Only this time, you won't fool them into thinking she's dead. Please! Xena, I love her. Think of Eve. As my wife the gods will only know her as Livia, Rome's champion. As your daughter, Eve they'll kill her."

He has a point, Xena. One that she ponders in the moonlight that night, at the Roman Inn where she and Gabrielle are staying.

Gabrielle: "Can't sleep?"
Xena: "I feel like there's no way home."
Gabrielle: "What do you mean?"
Xena: "I gave away one child once. And this time, I wanted to do right by Eve. But I woke up and my child had been ripped from my arms."
Gabrielle: "Xena, she's alive. There's a chance that you can still be
in her life."
Xena: "It's not gonna be easy. She has my darkness inside of her. She has Callisto's spirit. Those are tough odds to beat."
Gabrielle: "You did it."
Xena: "I had help."
Gabrielle: "She has us. Xena, she can change. Like mother, like daughter. Go to her and talk to her. She will see the truth."
Xena: [Whispers] "OK. [Normal Voice] You're right, whatever turned Eve, we can turn her back. Like mother, like daughter."

The next day, Gabrielle, Joxer and Virgil go searching for supplies as Xena goes off looking for Livia. Gabrielle realizes Virgil is more than just rippling muscles and adonis good looks as he responds to Xena's wish for luck with the phrase..."Fortune favors the brave." Luckily Gabrielle doesn't realize Virgil will eventually use that term in his epic poem the Aenid when The phrase was shouted by Turnus just before he was utterly destroyed by Aeneas's Trojans.

Of course, as soon as Xena leaves, our trio is set upon by soldiers looking for donations to build a new temple to Ares and for some reason Gabby doesn't want to donate... which leads to a fight, which shows us Virgil isn't "just" a literate pretty boy as he helps Gabrielle lay waste to many Romans before they have to surrender to save Joxer.

Poor Joxer. Even in his dotage, he's just a wannabe hero.

Meanwhile, back in the coliseum, Livia is getting an aerobic workout with the God of Wa himself, and she's pretty damn good. Then again, if I got to kiss the god of war after such a workout, I'D have a lot of incentive to be pretty damn good myself.

Of course, THAT has to be the moment Mommy walks into the arena... and.. well.. lets just say she is NOT pleased!

Whhhhhhhrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! goes the chakram, slicing the air between Ares and Livia's head. Good thing he heard it AND MOVED!

Loved the way he just ignored Livia and walked up to Xena to kiss her. Loved the way Xena turned said kiss into a head butt! Livia doesn't absorb Xena's reaction, she's still too pissed off at Ares' seeming rejection for this new woman.

Ares & Xena: best I ever had:

Ares: "For 25 years, I thought Xena was dead. And now she shows up, not one day older. I had to kiss her, make sure she was real, not an impostor."
Livia: "You're telling me that you had to kiss her to I.D. her?"
Ares: "Think about it. If Xena is still alive, chances are that Eve is, too. And if she is, then I'm the dead man."
Livia: "Because Eve is the bringer of twilight."
Xena: "Eve is dead, and you know it."

Xena gets away from Livia's sword, since she REALLY doesn't want to fight her own daughter. Livia goes looking for a fight, and searches the jails under the coliseum for someone to take her anger out on, and she finds that hunk a burning love, Virgil. He will represent the followers of Eli in a death match with her tomorrow.

As for "today"... Xena as always has a plan. (Which is good, since we never see her worry about the absence of Gabrielle et al.) Xena tells Octavius her daughter doesn't love HIM! She loves the God of War and she'll prove it at tonight's bacchanalia for the Roman elite. "Just get Livia where she can over hear us (Xena & Ares)."

I have to say, after all my admissions that I'm not very "observant", that Xena was gorgeous at that party... and Ares noticed!

Ares: (He lifts his wine goblet to the slave he thinks just walked up to him) "Hit me."
Xena: (turns her back to him and refuses to fill his cup) "Don't tempt me."
Ares: "I was kinda hopin' you'd be back. I gotta know what happened. I thought you were dead."
Xena: "It's a nasty rumor."
Ares: "No... no, see, I mourned you. For years, I mourned you."
Xena:
"Yes, you looked positively grief-stricken when I saw you today at the arena."
Ares: "What? That rough-and-tumble with Livia? You're not jealous."
Xena: "Of a Roman wannabe? Hardly."
Ares: "Well, you're right... she's not you. Because if I
thought, for one moment... that you being here meant we had a second chance... "
Xena: "Yes?"
Ares: "... I'd drop her like a nasty habit." (And a kiss occurs which rivals any from Xena's "Ares" dreams in "Eternal Bonds" or with Antony in Egypt. Good thing Gabrielle wasn't around to interrupt. As it was, Livia was... well... LIVID which did NOT please her future husband. HE dropped HER like a "bad habit" that very night.

Xena goes tearing through the palace, looking for Livia bit finds Ares instead. You know, for a god, he's pretty quick on the uptake. He's figured out that Xena has only appeared because Livia was present, and he's figured out "why". He turns down Xena's offer to take Livia/Eve away where she can do no harm to the gods, but he still leaves his original offer on the table.

She refuses.

Loved it when Mom in her leathers breaks into Livia's apartment as she's smashing everything breakable within reach. (Recall, she's no longer the future wife of and successor to Augustus.) Loved it when Mom's superior skill with her chakram and dagger catching is on full display. Loved it when she revealed WHO she was.

Xena: "It's not about Ares. I want to talk about you."
Livia: "Me? You don't know the first thing about me!"
Xena: "But I do. I know your first laugh your first tears. I know your first breath. I'm your mother. You're my daughter. Your name is Eve."
Liv: "Well, Ares was right about one thing, you're incredible."
Xena: "It's an incredible story, but the bottom line is, Ares now knows I'm your mother. You're in grave danger."
Livia: "You're insane! Why would I believe you?!"
Xena: "You are my daughter. When the other gods find out, you're g.."
Livia: "Shut up! You are not my mother. Rome is my mother. You're the one I want to fight to the death tomorrow in the arena just you and me."

Talk about a SLAP in the GREEK Warrior Princess' face. "ROME" is Eve's Mother. :scream:

Well, at least Virgil is off the hook, tomorrow. Again... its interesting to me that Xena hasn't said anything about the missing Bard and her companions, but this IS Xena, and you know she probably figured out where they were and left them in jail to keep them "safe". ;)

Great fight in the coliseum. Augustus actually looked sad to announce the match to the death between the former love of his life and her Mother, a woman who previously saved his life.

Don't let me get me:

Xena: "I will never give up on you Eve-- never!"
Livia: "I AM LIVIA!"

And SHE is XENA! :klingon:

Xena has Livia down on the sands of the coliseum, at her mercy, but she refuses to kill her. Virgil and Gabrielle start the shout for "Mercy" and "Life" and its taken up by the crowd in the stands. Augustus grants life, and Xena reaches her hand out to help Livia up.

Its batted away, as the beaten woman jumps up and runs for the exit.

Xena: "Eve! Eve! Eve." (Gabby comes up to Xena as the Warrior Princess searches through the crowd descending upon the sands of the arena) "We've gotta go after her, Gabrielle. She'll do something terrible. We've gotta save her from herself... and the gods."

That's an understatement, Xena. Just remember.

"Fortune favors the brave".

(Wrong subject matter :alienblush:, but right music! :bolian: )

Just an aside re: the start of this ep and that "iconic" image of Xena breaking through the ice lid of her ice coffin with her fist.

I realized that THIS Xena scene is the antithesis of the "Women in refrigerator" argument brought up a year ago on the Voyager Board.

I have my own opinions re: Janeway and the fridge, but I LOVE the idea that Xena literally was put on ice... and she broke out of that trap with her "powers" not to mention her humanity intact.

Don't know where I'm going with this... just love that image of that fist. :bolian:

Oh, and I love this blurb from Double dare: Quentin Tarantino talks Xena:

Previously on Xena: The friends sleep for 25 years in an ice cave, placed there lovingly by Ares himself and freed when the sun reawakens our Warrior Princess.

THWACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Love that fist!)

Xena: "I know your first laugh-- your first tears. I know your first breath. I'm your mother."
Xena: (To Gabrielle as they stand in the Roman moonlight) It's not gonna be easy. She has my darkness inside of her. She has Callisto's spirit. Those are tough odds to beat."
Xena: "I will never give up on you Eve... never!"
Livia: "I AM LIVIA!"

Episode 111 season 5 # 21 "Eve"

I have to say... I find utterly charming the relationship between Joxer and his blacksmithing poet of a son. Joxer tries to be so "mighty"... and Virgil lets him, both in last week's ep, and even in this weeks teaser when Joxer shows off his "tracking" skills. But the years haven't dulled Joxer's ability to say exactly the wrong thing at the wrong time.

Gabrielle: "It doesn't matter what she calls herself, Xena. A lifetime serving Rome doesn't change the fact that she's your daughter. When she looks inside herself, she'll see you there. She'll be Eve again."
Joxer: "Sure, with a mother like you, how bad can she be?"

Livia: "Followers of Eli don't forget to turn the other cheek. Ah-h-h-h-h!" (And she runs someone through with her very bloody sword)
Soldier's Voice: "Traitors! Do you like...."
Livia: "Why Xena is determined to protect you sheep is beyond me."
Lieutenant: "Livia-- we can't find a temple to Eli in the village. There's no proof these people were even part of Eli's cult."
Livia: "And I should care?! Why? Eli's followers are vermin. They hide amongst true Romans, spreading like a sickness. If a few innocents must die to stop their heresy, so be it. And if it vexes Xena, so much the better."
Old Man: (On his knees) "You can't destroy our spirit! We've seen worse than you. We've lived through Callisto's raids."
Livia: "Callisto... she did some good work... but I'm not Callisto. (And she beheads him with her sword) Ah-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-yah-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h- h-h!"

Our quartet enter the village after Livia et al have abandoned it. They find bodies everywhere, hacked to death, not to mention multiple crosses with victims still impaled upon them.

Xena: (Ashamed) "My daughter did this."

TEASER ENDS:

As they walk through the village, Virgil finds friends of his among the dead. Xena finds a lone woman still alive, who spits on her when she hears Xena's name.

Woman: "She killed them all! My husband... my children! I asked her, `Why?! Why?!' She said, `Ask Xena... ask my mother!' Tell me, why, Xena! [Crying] Why?! Why?! Why?! Why?!"

Before Xena can get too introspective, she gets an unwelcome visitor with a repetitive line. (Give it UP already, Dude. She's just not into you!)

Ares: "She's something, isn't she? Looks like Livia's nearly racked up the body count you had at her age."
Xena: "She's my daughter, you sick bastard."
Ares: "Why do you think it was so easy to turn her? Look, this is all blood under the bridge. You give me a child, the other gods will never find out that Eve is still alive."
Xena: "I'd rather go to hell." (Been there, done that, got the hooves to prove it ;) )
Ares: "Damn it, I'm not asking you, I'm telling you! You give me what I want! Or I will bring all of Olympus down on your daughter's head!" (I guess his romantic side withered in the last 25 years )
Xena: "The thought of being with you or of having your child, that sickens me." :barf:

I find it interesting that Ares never tried the offspring card with Livia. As it is, since he's struck out with Mom, he's going BACK to the daughter to mend fences.

Livia: "Where's Xena fit into all this?"
Ares: "She doesn't... but you're gonna have to kill her to keep her from stopping you."
Livia: "And the twilight? Aren't you afraid? Aren't you afraid I'll bring about the end of your gods?"
Ares: "When you were born, there was panic on Olympus. It cost Zeus his life. Hera vanished. And then we thought you were dead for twenty... five... years... and do you know what happened? Nothing. So, the only power you have over us is our own fear. Reclaim your destiny, Livia. Kill Xena."

He really IS a sick bastard!:barf:

Just as Xena can count on Ares' gluttony, she can also count on Gabrielle for her "unconditional" love and support.

Xena: "These tracks are fresh. I can't believe that it's my
daughter we're tracking, that it's Eve who's doing these
terrible things."
Gabrielle: "Xena, this isn't the Eve that you would've raised. Ares did this."
Xena: "Ares might have opened the door, but Eve had to walk through."
Gabrielle: "How do you know that?"
Xena: "You said it yourself, Eve finally took a good look inside herself, and she found me there."
Gabrielle: "That's not what I meant."
Xena: "I know her rage, it's in Eve's blood, Gabrielle. I made her who she was. I was her."
Gabrielle: "Then there's hope, because you changed."

That's my bard! :bolian:

Our quartet finally catch up to Livia as she's sacking yet another village. I love the juxtaposition of the parent/child relationships on display... the mutual love and respect between Joxer and Virgil... and the hate and disrespect (one sided) between Livia and her Mother, Xena.

(Fight to save the village begins)
Joxer: (Trying unsuccessfully to pull his sword from its scabbard) "Wait till-- "
Virgil: (Motions Joxer back to safety) "I got it, Dad."
Joxer: "Get 'em, boy! Like I taught ya!"
(Fight continues between Livia's soldiers and Xena, Gabrielle and Virgil)
Xena: (Growls at a soldier) "Where is she?!"
Livia: "Oh, Mommy.... "
Gabrielle: [Whispers fearfully as she sees Livia's dagger at Joxer's throat] "Joxer."
Xena: (Suddenly goes soft and quiet, like she was dealing with a frightened child) "Eve-- "
Livia: "I told you, my name is Livia!"
Xena: "All right, Livia. You've got a bone to pick with me. Here I am... but let Joxer go."
Livia: "It's time for some payback, Xena. I think I'll start with this loser."

Don't worry... Joxer doesn't die. And to Ares GREAT delight, Livia DOESN'T listen to her Mom's entreaties to leave the dark side of the force.

Livia: "I'm glad you came back. Killing you must be part of my destiny."
Xena: "No, your destiny isn't to kill. Your destiny is to find a new way beyond the killing!"
Livia: "Shut up, and fight me! Fight me! Fight me!"
Ares: "Do it! She's all that stands between you and Rome!"
Xena: "He's lying to you, Eve. He'd say anything to keep you from your true path. That's why I came back, to show you who you truly are."
Ares: "Come on. Do it."
Xena: "Listen to your heart."
Livia: "My heart is a traitor."

What an interesting comment about one's self. During the "Ides of March" commentary, Lucy discussed one of the "Roman precepts" of training its soldiers was to completely separate them from any compassion. Sounds like Livia had a "proper" soldier's upbringing.

But its Xena's heart... filled with compassion, that seems to betray to villagers. One lone man attacks from above, getting the drop on Livia and nearly killing her before Xena uses the chakram to free her. Livia is shocked but simply grabs her horse and hightails it out of town with her men.

Ares: "How does it feel, Xena, knowing the person you love... despises you; trying to reach her, but knowing in the end it'll either be her... or you."
Man: (Who tried to kill Livia) "Why did you stop me? She murdered my wife, my daughter. What about the next family she butchers? And the next? Their blood's on your hands, now!"

Remember that bard with the unconditional love?

Gabrielle: "Xena you were getting through to Eve today. All you need... all you need is another chance."
Xena: "Chances run out, Gabrielle, for all of us."
Gabrielle: (Foreshadowing) "If that's true, if Eve can't be changed, could you kill your own daughter?"
Xena: "If I had to... yes, I could."

Remember that son, who also loves HIS father unconditionally?

(Lying next to each other on their bedrolls)

Joxer: "Virgil.. about today... "
Virgil: "Forget about today, Dad. You were just tired."
Joxer: "Listen, let me finish. I always wanted to be a great warrior. It didn't work out. I tried to join every army from here to Egypt, but nobody ever wanted me and, ah... well... that's all."
Virgil: "So, you never battled the dryads?"
Joxer: "That was Xena."
Virgil: "What about the harpies?"
Joxer: "Xena, too."
Virgil: "Sent Callisto to hell?"
Joxer: "Xena."
Virgil: "Got Callisto out of hell."
Jox: "Xena."
Vir: "Wow..." (Reaches up to pat his Dad on the shoulder) "Sounds like you and Xena had some real adventures together, Dad."
Joxer: (Smiles as he takes Virgil's hand in his own.) "We sure did, Son. We sure did." :bolian:

You know, for all the angst of Joxer’s unrequited love, he LIVED the life both Gabrielle and Xena wanted. He settled down and married Meg and had at least 2 children to gladden his heart. He raised them with love which is obvious from Virgil’s treatment of his Dad’s failings. And in the end… in the end he had one last glorious adventure, doing what he always wanted to do, be Gabrielle’s hero.

But first… its Gabrielle’s turn to try and be Xena’s hero. That night, Xena has left camp and makes arrangements for Gabrielle et al to meet her in Austia, where’s Eli’s biggest temple resides. Gabrielle wakens Virgil from his sleep, and NOT for any hanky panky!

Gabrielle [Whispers]: "Virgil. Virgil, I have something I have to do. If I'm not back by dawn, I need you to meet Xena in Austia, like we planned."
Virgil: "Where are you going?"
Gabrielle: "Promise me."
Virgil: "I will, but what are you gonna do?"
Gabrielle: "I'm gonna try to keep Xena from doing something that she'd never forgive herself for. Thanks."

Remember, Gabrielle knows what its like to kill a daughter, and she’ll do anything to keep Xena from knowing that pain, even at the risk of death. Considering she’s going to see Livia, that’s a safe bet!

Livia: "Have the preparations been made for the attack?"
Lieutenant: "Yes-- but there's a complication." (Pulls Gabrielle into the tent) She just walked into camp-- unarmed."
Livia: "Leave us. Auntie Gabrielle-- welcome."
Gabrielle: "I've come here-- "
Livia: "No, please… let me. You thought if you could just talk to me… heart to heart? You could convince me that Xena wants only to help me, and if I could find it… within myself,to give her a chance, Mommy would make it all better."
Gabrielle: "The gods wanted you dead. Xena risked her life to save you.Does that mean anything to you?"
Livia: "It means, she's as stupid as she is sentimental."
Gabrielle: "Your mother loves you."
Livia: "Then why is she trying to destroy me?"
Gabrielle: "Xena wants to protect you. She will not fight you."
Livia: (Brings her dagger to Gabrielle’s neck) "Maybe she hasn't been properly motivated."

What I love about this last scene is something Lucy and Renee said in a commentary on “One against an Army. Lucy claimed TPTB made them stop putting knives to necks to threaten people because “that happens in real life”… and Renee asked, “Then why did it happen to me all the time?” :guffaw:

Joxer wakes up and sees Gabby is gone. He may not be the classic hero, but he’s also NO fool. He sends his son off to fetch Xena back, and goes to Livia’s camp to keep an eye on Gabrielle.

Best line… “20… to 1. Huh. Good odds!"

Its now morning, and Joxer is in the bushes as Gabby is led out of a tent by the soldiers.

Livia: "Today-- we wipe out the remnants of Eli's cult-- and I--take my revenge on their champion-- Xena."
Gabrielle: "It's not too late to stop this, Eve."
Livia: "Don't call me Eve. Tie her up."J
Joxer: "Xena-- where are you?"

Auntie Gabrielle, who is ACTUALLY probably a year younger (or more) than Livia/Eve at this moment, is about to be skewered by her best friend’s daughter, so her lifeless body can be found by Xena. JOXER the old and yet still Mighty, walks up in the middle of the crowd of soldiers and distracts her with his buffoonery. It works, delaying Livia long enough for XENA to arrive.

Livia: "Oh, good-- Mom's here."
Joxer: "About time."
Lieutenant: "Move!"
Livia: (re: Gabrielle’s murder) "This will be much more effective with an audience."

Mom AND Virgil are here, and the two truly are kicking A$$ and taking names as poor Joxer is trampled underfoot.

Livia is no fool, she knows its now or never and she turns to Gabrielle, pulling her dagger.

Joxer sees it, hops up, screaming “NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!” and runs for Livia.

Xena sees it too and is ready to Chakram her daughter, but Joxer is in her line of fire.

Livia hears the attack approaching from behind, turns with the dagger and Joxer is impaled upon it as Gabrielle and Virgil both scream in agony.

Virgil: "Dad!" (He and Xena run to Joxer’s side)
Joxer: [Moans]
Virgil: (Looks up to the warrior and healer) " Can you help him?" (She shakes her head sadly, then goes to cut Gabrielle down as the father and son have a private moment)
Joxer: (To his “boy”) "Hey… are you OK?"
Virgil :[Whispers to his Dad] "Yeah."
Joxer :[Whispers back, contented] "OK."

After Gabrielle’s tearful thanks, “old” Joxer dies. But there’s no time to waste. They can’t bring him home “yet”, there’s still Livia to contend with. Not to mention a heartbroken son.

Gabrielle: "We should take him home. He would do the same for us."
Virgil: "I'll take him, after we deal with Livia."
Xena: "Virgil, you should be with Meg. This isn't your fight."
Virgil: "Look-- you have my respect, because you had his, but don't tell me this isn't my fight-- not now."

continued yet again.

I love that Virgil loved his Dad so much. Again, it reinforces for me that Joxer DID have a life after Gabrielle, even if he still remained fixated upon the two women long after their apparent deaths. I found it interesting that he raised his family to believe in the cult of Eli.

Virgil: "Is this what it means to follow Eli? I knew my faith would be tested, but never like this."
Gabrielle: "Eli always says it takes courage to walk his path."
Virgil: "How can I love when my heart is filled with vengeance?"
Gabrielle: "I know that it's hard. When you're pushed, you just wanna push back, but you have to ask yourself, is that want Eli would want?"
Virgil: "I don't care what Eli wants. I just know what I have to do."

Ares appears once more to rub Xena's nose in the death of Joxer, reminding her SHE could have prevented it with one "yes".

What I like about that scene and this repeating theme ad nauseum is that Xena DOESN'T let herself be blackmailed.

Of course, it doesn't stop her from feeling guilty.

Xena: "I never thought it would be my friend."
Gabrielle: "It's not your fault, Xena."
Xena: "Isn't it?"
Gabrielle [Whispers] "No."
Xena: "I spared Eve. I thought I could save her, and now Joxer is dead. What part of that isn't my fault?"
Gabrielle: "You had to try."
Xena: "That's cold comfort to Virgil and Meg. How many more innocents will die before I end this?"
Gabrielle: "None. Xena, I went to Livia. I tried to tell her that we love her. She didn't care."
Xena: (Heartbroken) "You called her Livia."
Gabrielle: "That's who she is. Eve is dead. She's not your daughter anymore, Xena... she's Rome's."

Wow. If Eve is dead... who will avenge her passing?

Excellent reveal, excellent fight, raw emotion, a battling bard, an avenging then prayerful princess... And then the unthinkable happens.

Gabrielle: "Xena, what happened?"
Xena: "I think Eli's followers got that miracle they were praying for."
Gabrielle: "What did she say to you?"
Xena: "She said... her name was Eve."

AWESOME EP!

Joxer is dead, and Eve killed him. If you didn't "see" last "week's" ep, Gabrielle reminds us of that very fact in the teaser, as the two watch a forlorn woman stumble about in the desert, looking for a soul she lost years ago.

Gabrielle: "Xena, I don't know if I wanna help her, or.... She killed Joxer."
Xena:
"And she's lost, just as I was. But I got lucky, 'cause I found you. Now, I have to try to help her find her way. Gabrielle, I understand if you can't go through... "
Gabrielle: "Xena... let's save your daughter."

I love the cries of hypocrisy that I've seen on various websites discussing Xena's treatment of Livia turned Eve. Xena puts other warlords to death or at least in prison, but here she not only protects Eve from an avenging mob...

LOVE that amazing Chakram! )

... but she continues to protect her from a bunch of frightened gods who have met to discuss Ares revelation that Eve is alive and well. Athena has a plan to "fix that", and Aphrodite's only concern is to protect Gabrielle, something Athena CAN'T or WON'T promise.

Aphrodite: [Whispers] "Can we leave the bard out of this?"
Athena: "Do you have a soft spot for Gabrielle?"
Aphrodite: "She's my friend."
Athena: [Condescendingly] "Oh-h-h-h-- well then don't watch."

I love those "cries of hypocrisy" because Xena, as Xena herself explained, is only "doing unto Eve", what was done "unto Xena" herself. Forgiving her, and rehabilitating her.

That's something even grief stricken Gabrielle can understand. For now.

Mom and Auntie Gabrielle wade into the fray, and poor Eve is dragged away by a rider in a scene reminiscent of "The Bitter Suite". Interestingly, as we saw last week, Eve is able to catch Xena's chakram, but doesn't use it to free herself from the galloping horse. In fact, it seemed to me that by catching the chakram she prevented Xena from freeing her. Naturally, Xena AND Argo won't accept that, and chase down her captor much to his discomfort, and free a very dry and dirty Eve.

Xena [Whispers] "Eve. Give me that."
Eve: "You should have let them kill me!"
Xena: "Never-- hear me? Never. Gabrielle, bring be some water. Quick. (To Eve as she cradles her on the hot sands) OK, try to drink."
(And in case you were wondering what Athena plans for the young bard, wonder no longer. The three FURIES have flown to Gabrielle's side and are now whispering "evil nothings" into her ears.)
Alecto's Voice: "Xena... Eve will only break your heart. There'll be no peace for you until she's dead."

Under the heading, "it really is a small world afterall", after Xena rescues Eve not only does Gabrielle have her first encounter with the FURIES, she and Xena meet their first groupie.

Woman: (Comes out of nowhere) "Xena? Excuse me, did you call that woman Xena?"
Gabrielle: "Yes."
Woman: "Oh. Well, our scriptures tell us that our founder knew a woman called Xena. We call her the defender of the faith, but...well, it couldn't be the same woman."
Gabrielle: "The founder... do you mean Eli?"
Woman: "Yes!"
Gabrielle:
(Points at the woman cradling Eve in her lap) "This is the defender of your faith."

Eli's followers are very hospitable, and the trio are invited to the old woman's home to discuss Eli.

How appropriate, that the Bitch of Rome, who tried to extinguish his "cult", should look to him for salvation. How sad that while speaking of love, Gabrielle's ears are filled with hate.

Gabrielle: (Sitting at a place of honor, among a roomful of Eli's worshippers, Gabrielle looks at her audience as she begins) "He, um... he gave us all hope... that every living thing could be saved by love."
Eve:
(Sitting between Gabby and Xena) "He was wrong. How can I be saved? The things I've done."
Xena: (Mama Xena is just so sweet as she tries to comfort her daughter.) "Eve, maybe you should listen to what they have to say about Eli."
Woman: "Eli teaches that, even if you've done something really bad-- you can find comfort and love."
Eve: "I wiped out entire villages because they wouldn't pay me tribute. I've drunk the blood of men that I tortured to death! I killed her best friend!" (Notice she didn't mention trying to wipe out their religion)
Xena : [Whispers] "Stop. Stop it."
Alecto: (One of the Invisible FURIES whispering into Gabby's ear) "She's gloating about killing Joxer. I shouldn't leave her alone with Xena. Who knows what she's capable of?"
Xena: "Eli used to initiate sinners into his way of love with some sort of ceremony."
Woman: "Yes, yes, w... there's a man that continues that tradition. We call him `The Baptist.' "
Xena: "Where can we find him?"

I like the simplicity of the baptism scene, juxtaposed with the complexity of everything else happening within that scene. Eve is led out into the ocean to be cleansed, Xena is locked into a personal silent communication with someone from the heavens, and Gabrielle is still being afflicted by her FURIES.

Eve: "What are you looking at?!"
Baptist: "Suffering-- horrible suffering."
Eve: "I should die for my deeds."
Baptist: "You're right. You must die to the things of the flesh, and be reborn... to the way...of love."
Xena:
(To the spirit silently communing with her) "If that's the way it must be-- then I'm ready."
Alecto: (The FURIES refuse to be silent) "Look at Xena!"
Fury 2: "She's just setting herself up to be hurt again."
Gabrielle: "No."
Alecto: "You know there's no reforming Eve."
Fury 2's Voice: "She's just setting herself up to be hurt again."

Because I'm a real softie, my heart just melt when Eve came back to Xena after her Baptism and was enfolded in that bearhug from the Warrior Mom. :luvlove:

And since you know TPTB don't believe in giving these ladies a break, that hug signaled the "it" is about to "hit" the fan! :klingon: The ocean begins to churn and boil as POSEIDON himself rises from the ocean depths to take care of the bringer of twilight!

As the trio turn to run from the danger of the beach, they run into 4 gods who couldn't bother to listen to Athena. :scream:

I agree with Rob Tapert... the image of Xena standing there in her robe, face determined, pulling her sword from its scabbard on her back, is one of my fav of the 6 years. As James T.Kirk would say... "She. Looks. So. INCREDIBLE!"

And speaking of incredible, the FIGHT was certainly that; between Poseidon, Artemis, Deimos, Hades, Hephaestus, Discord and one incredibly pissed off Warrior Princess.

(Aside: This is from and interview with "Eve" posted at whoosh.org

Question:"How were your experiences with the explosions and stuff ?"
Wilkinson: "The explosions were a bit scary- just because in my lack of experience with them- I wasn't prepared- we were surrounded by fire and smoke and explosions for days and days and I had assumed that it would all be computer generated- how wrong I was!!...in Motherhood I was supposed to be weak and scared and apprehensive- so the explosions got me there in a heartbeat. :) )

I loved the way Xena could deflect the fireballs / thunderbolts from the gods back at themselves, and eventually directly into Poseidon's chest. Watching Big Blue go down for the count made me smile, since I've disliked him since "Ulysses" and "Lost Mariner" (Note to Rob, this WASN'T the first time we've seen "that" (Poseidon) title character. )

Loved the way she just separated Discord's head from her shoulders (And THIS was 10 years BEFORE Spartacus did it routinely on "premium cable". :klingon: )

And finally, loved how Xena somersaulted her way into picking up Hephaestus' hammer, and used it to pierce his chest. (I never realized why Aphrodite clutched HER OWN chest on Olympus when this happened, until I read somewhere that THESE TWO gods were actually married to each other. )

Ares and Athena finally leave Olympus to join the few gods left standing on the beach with Xena.

Gabrielle: (She bends down to pick up the chakram on the sand, and flips it up to Xena, who stands ready to use it on the next god who threatens her family) "Xena!"
Athena:
(Butter wouldn't melt in her mouth!) "So... you can kill gods."
