Any Xena:WP fans on the boards?

Remember reading a very funny fanfic where the trio set up house together, Harry getting them both pregnant and giving up practical medecine for a desk job as he retains his knowledge but is too clumsy now to enact it

Polly is Paulina in 'The Play's the Thing' and her descendent/reincarnation in 'Send in the Clones'

Hmmm.

Do I really want to know?

Should I let sleeping dogs lie?

Lay?

Sleep? :p

Sigh... its like watching a wreck on the side of the road... sometimes you just can't pull your eyes away.

Okay, Saturn5... was this fanfic after "Deja Vu...." or after "Soul Possesion"????

In other words, :alienblush: ahem...

Is Xena getting Joxer pregnant, or is Joxer getting Xena pregnant?

Polly is Paulina?

How cute is that, a credit AND the inspiration for the character's name! :bolian:

It was after Soul Possession and it's Joxer/Harry who get's both Xena/Annie and Gabby/Mattie pregnant. It's never made clear whether it's by IVF or the old fashioned way. That said, remember Xena and Joxer's reincarnations are already lovers and Mattie is also hetero/bi as far as we know.

Fallen Angel, wow, very impressive considering the constraints of Xena's budget. Especially like demon Callisto (the waking up scene is a classic) and evil Gabby taunting her (note Callisto still retains some of her humanity, Gabby's words still hurt her)
Also nice scenes with a heartbroken Joxer, too late to rescue his friends but risking all to help Eli and Amarice do the right thing by them. Who sent him his dreams? The one god or maybe Aphrodite?
Best is yet to come. And I like the idea of naked swordfighting Amarice:drool:

I thought you might like the idea of Amarise's swordplay... with my luck if they filmed such a beast it would be JOXER doing the "Honors".

Speaking of doing the "honors"... I don't get the impression that Xena is the kind of girl who likes to "share"... so I suspect its IVF for Gabrielle.

Since Xena and Joxer's future characters were already shacking up (in the future as Mattie & Harry) , I could see her going "either way"... IVF or "traditional".

Hmmmm.

Well, "either" way IF Gabrielle doesn't have a problem "sharing". ;)

Loved loved loved... "Fallen Angel".

And I really loved the fact that Gabrielle's play in the season 6 ep "When Fates Collide" is called "Fallen Angel".

:bolian:

I guess it was around this time I was noticing how whichever Trek show was on (DS9?) was skimping on special effects - closing windows or having ships stopped to avoid animated starfields, video screens instead of superimposed holograms, guest ships only referred to in dialog to avoid having to create a new model...

And Xena throws a couple of episodes at us that are 100% effects from wall-to-wall!

Eric Gruendemann one of the Producers "on the ground" in NZ, talked during the commentary about the first time he read this script. He could tell that during the TEASER "he" was going to have to spend more money in FX than he did in most episodes! He also noted that the teaser was a completely digital set, with just a little flooring that was "real" for the girls to stand on, and he thought X:WP was one of the first shows to use it so extensively.

Of course, as he's saying this, he's watching the teaser unfold and he adds something like, "But then you see how beautiful they (Lucy & Renee) are in it, and its worth all the money."

Fanboy. :bolian:

BIG time! :rommie:

Really, I never noticed that! Love Fallen Angel , very effective demon/Angel battles, a lovely subplot with Joxer, Amarice and Eli, a great scene where Lucy gives it her all as demon-Xena rallying her troops (she and Gabby still want one another, their love literally survives to hell and back). But I think the highlight for me is angel-Callisto (Hudson makes a GREAT angel) finally finding salvation and forgiveness with Xena and Gabby. He expression when Gabby tells her of her evil deeds and she looks baffled and replies "No, I would never do that" is fantastic

Good golly, YES! After all the evil we've seen her do, to see her completely void of that was amazing. To see her break down even Gabrielle's defenses (she lost Perdicus AND Xena because of Callisto) was inspiring.

And as smaltzy as it was, I was happy to see Callisto finally get a happy ending. Not the oblivion she thought she craved, but the love she thought was lost forever.

With more to come, later in season 5!

I can't take credit for noting the Fallen Angel title in Season 6. Renee laughs about it during her commentary on the dvd. :techman:

Xena:Warrior Princess version of a mirror universe episode. From season 6's "When Fates Collide"

Actor: "Let me introduce to you-- the writer of `Fallen Angel' Greece's own, Gabrielle, the visionary voice of Athens."
----------
Xena Empress of Rome meets Gabrielle for the first time, at an after play cocktail party.
----------

Gabrielle: [Chuckles]
Xena: "I found your play very moving."
---------
Xena: "What inspires you?"
Gabrielle: "It's like the words come from somewhere else. I just write them down. But you, Empress, all of Rome talks about you. The country thrives. The people adore you. They say that the army would follow you through the gates of Hades."
Xena: "Well, everything has its price, Gabrielle."
-----
Xena: "In the third act, you had your hero throw himself over the cliff with no fear of dying, all for her. Do you really believe that kind of love exists?"
Gabrielle: "That's what we all dream about, isn't it? Someone who
looks so deeply into our soul that-- they'd find something worth dying for."
JuliusCaesar: "Excuse me. Your play was, uh-- riveting. Well-done.
Thank you. (to Xena) The army's expecting us first thing in the morning."
Xena: "Thank you, Gabrielle, for honoring Rome with your play. Good night."

Loved the look Gabrielle gave Caesar when he interrupted them and the look she gives Xena as she walks away.

And of course, I love the similarities between Gabrielle's play and this last ep, where
In the first act, RJ Stewart had his hero throw herself over the cliff with no fear of dying-- all for her. :luvlove:

So, the girls are still in the abandoned temple, trying to wrap their heads around recent events. Gabrielle is doing a better job than Xena, who no longer recognizes her chakram. Who no longer knows she's a Warrior Princess.

When she and Gabrielle go into a local village to buy new clothes (their's were taken by the Romans before they were crucified in those "rag outfits"), Gabrielle buys a pair of scythes for Xena to use as a weapon, (AKA Gardening trowels, if you listen to Lucy Lawless.) but Xena will have nothing to do with them.

"What's a Warrior without a weapon?" asks Joxer.

"Easy pickings" answers the minions of the war god Kal as they come to kidnap Xena.

(For those who watch Spartacus, be alerted... "Kal" is the same actor who plays the Gladiator "Barca" in season 1 and in the prequel)

I think my fav funny scene of the entire show comes up next, as Amarise with her sword and Gabrielle with her 2 scythes beat up Kal's minions.

I know, whats so funny about that? We've seen it hundreds of times, right?

Right.

WE'VE seen it, AMARISE hasn't! :wtf:

Amarise just stood there, her mouth hanging open as the "girl formerly known as a peacenik" laid waste to several of Kal's soldiers. Really.

Amarise turned "fangirl" at Gabrielle's first blow, and nearly looked like she would start applauding any moment when Gabby starting kicking another soldier in the face while she was standing BEHIND him.:techman:

Unfortunately, someone else was also just "standing around", and when a soldier advanced on her she didn't even know how to stop the blow that felled her in the street market. So shocked were our two younger Princesses, the other soldiers got the drop on them before JOXER came to the rescue!

I know! Who'd a thunk it? :bolian:

Back at the abandoned temple, Eli realizes that Xena can't recall anything "violent" about her past, can't recall anything bad. She's more interesting in binding up Joxer's wounds than trying to figure our why she won't fight to protect herself. Kal's men are tracking them, and the quintet leaves the temple for the home of a local scholar Eli knows. Eli hopes Caleb will be able to tell them what's wrong with Xena.

What Eli doesn't know, is that Kal has already sent Caleb to his death, in an attempt to retrieve the "light" Chakram.

The trip to Caleb's sanctuary is marred by Amarise acting like a kid who's greatest hero was stolen from her and replaced with a woman even MORE peace-loving than "last season's" Gabrielle. Not only did she lose her hero, she lost Xena as Kal and his men appeared while they were hunting for food, kidnapping Xena and disabling, if not humbling, Amarise.

Since I'm a sap for heart to hearts... here's what Gabrielle was doing by the campfire as Xena was off getting attacked with with Amarise.

Eli: "What is it, Gabrielle?"
Gabrielle: [Sighs] "Before Xena and I died, I realized that my path is not the same as yours. I tried, but the way of love is not for me."
Eli: "I know. I see that now."
Gabrielle: "It's ironic. Right now, Xena is everything that I always wanted her to be but without her dark side, she's lost she's-she's off-balance. My path is with Xena helping her however I can. I'll do whatever I have to do to protect her."

(In the dvd interviews, I liked Renee & Lucy's conversation on this point. Renee was trying to deny that Gabby ever wanted Xena to be "nonviolent", and Lucy was sitting there teasing her about forgetting a little thing like... "Season One and Two!")

The thing I liked about this conversation with Eli, is that it follows up neatly Gabrielle's self revelation at the end of "Ides of March" and throughout "Fallen Angel", not to mention Eli's own epiphany in "Fallen Angel".

I also like it that Gabrielle picked up her responsibility for protecting Xena in her current state of peacefulness as seriously as she picked up Xena's sword in that prison when Xena's spine was broken by Callisto.

It was so strange, watching Xena in this ep.

She wasn't fighting, she wasn't even actively trying to find a way to fight that wasn't fighting, like Gabrielle did in the last few eps of season 4. She wasn't blind to the danger she and her fellows were in, and she wasn't stupid. She noticed the gate controls in the village and closed them on Kal's soldiers to delay them enough so they could escape. She took the initiative when it was presented to escape from Kal's fortess/clutches as Ares distracted him. When the time came, she ran into the temple of the chakram, grabbed the light chakram and made ready to use it.

But she couldn't.

For a soul pure enough to take the chakram from the altar without resulting in immolation, the will to kill was long gone.

At Caleb's sanctuary, overtopping two waterfalls, the quintet discovers the scholar is "not home". Then Xena realizes the monk who died in Kal's quest for the chakram was Caleb and all seems lost until Eli finds a clue in Caleb's scrolls.

There's a cute B plot running through this show, and it involves Joxer and his love for Gabrielle. He tries to get Eli, the "Love Guru" to give him some pointers, or a poem to tell Gabrielle how much Joxer loves her. Eli just laughs and tells him to "keep it simple".

Joxer then has a discussion with Xena while she's in the hot tub. (She's IN it, he's standing outside it, looking the other way.)

Joxer: "Oh! Xena hi." (A naked Xena entered the tub while his back was turned) "I'm really sorry. I'll come back later."
Xena: "No-no, it's all right. Has Eli found something?"
Joxer: "No. No. Um Xena, you know how I feel about Gabrielle?"
Xena: "Sure, you love her."
Joxer: "Right. Um and um I was kinda hoping that since you guys are such good friends" (clearly he's clueless about how close these friends might be?) "and all that, you could maybe give me some tips."
Xena: "Tips?"
Joxer: "Yeah you know recommendations on on how I can tell her. I was thinking uh maybe I could try the `down on one knee' approach, (You should see Xena's face at this comment) or uh maybe flowers, and and, uh gifts or, I could just club her over the head. Do you see my problem?"
Xena: (Face again is precious) "Yeah, your expectations."
Joxer: "Huh?"
Xena:
(She may not remember anything of her violent past, but she obviously remembers everything about love in her past) "See, right now it's all about getting a response from her. If ya love her, why don't you just tell her? Don't attach any strings to it. Make it unconditional."
Joxer: "Yeah, but but what if I, I tell her that, and she says `Joxer--what are you thinking?'"
Xena: "Joxer, no strings. All right?"
Joxer: "No strings. Got it." (he leaves)
Xena: (Smiles to herself) "Of course, you could just kiss the girl." [Chuckles as she notices a new shadow falling on the curtain Joxer had been hiding behind during his conversation. it blows aside and we see...]
Ares: "Interesting offer."

For the Xena/Ares shippers (Naked Xena, and Xena in red [not dancing] are from the ep "Chakram")

As sexy as the encounter between Xena & Ares is in the "hot tub"... my fav part of this scene is when Gabrielle interrupts them.

Gabrielle: "Xena? Eli f-- . Ares-- you-- "
(What's she trying not to say? Pig? Prick? Bastard? ALL work equally well and they play across Gabrielle's face as she confronts him. Xena, for her part, looks as innocent as a baby, standing naked and wet before the muscular, black leather draped god of war.)
Xena: "Oh, you know each other?"
Gabrielle: (To Ares, nearly spitting in her fury) "Your hair is shorter, but you're still the same. Only you would take advantage of Xena when she's like this."
Ares: "Like this? What do you mean? Because she can't remember things that make her mad? Things that fill her with hate? Well-- when did you become so hard?" (Then he gives an evil smile at Gabrielle, behind Xena's back, before he winks away)

So, Eli thinks he knows what Ares and Kal both want, the Chakram of Light. Only a pure/innocent soul can pick it up from the altar without going up in flames. Xena finally agrees to help them retrieve it, but now its time for HER crisis of faith, on a balcony over a waterfall.

Xena: (She's alone on the balcony, turning the pieces of the broken chakram in her hands) "I can make no sense of this. Whoever you are, whatever you are, that brought me back like this, I need to know why. I don't know how I'm supposed to be, but the others say that I'm a warrior, that I kill so that innocent people may live." (Gabrielle has entered the room with the balcony, and is now listening) "They want me back the way that I was. Do you? Is that your plan? Send me a sign. How will I know what's right unless you do?"
Gabrielle: (Gabrielle walks out onto the balcony to stand next to her friend who's still holding the broken chakram .) "Xena-- are you praying?"
Xena: "I can't help wondering if we're doing the right thing. Restoring this darkness, my violence-- can that really be good?"
Gabrielle: "I think it's vital. I know that sounds strange, coming from me. I think you have to know the darkest part of yourself to be whole."
Xena: "But this way, I harm no one."
Gabrielle: "But Xena, what about the people who harm others? Xena, you have this balance of lightness and darkness. Without both of those, the very best in you is defenseless."

Xena isn't "just" the way Gabrielle "thought" she wanted her in years past... Xena's the way Gabrielle wanted herself to be over the last 4 months. But Gabrielle has learned the lesson Xena learned years ago. If someone won't be stopped with a calm tone and a loving word, then perhaps they'll stop with a wellplaced chakram or scythe.

Our quintet have broken into the temple of the Chakram, past Kal's guards and Xena has retrieved the Chakram of light. She just can't use it to kill.

Back at the temple of the chakram, as Kal AND Ares are arrayed against them our friends regroup.

Gabrielle: "Is everybody OK?"
Amarise: "She's not. She's still not normal."

On Star Trek Voyager, there's a cute scene in a season 6 ep called "Muse". The half Klingon Engineer is trying to explain the facts of warfare life to a playwright who's current play is filled with his characters kissing at the drop of the hat.

TORRES: Because when you think that you are surrounded by enemies, when you're up against the Borg, or, or Species 8472, the last thing on your mind is romance.

Joxer OBVIOUSLY never watched season 6 of Voyager! (Which ran concurrently with season 5 of Xena)

(Gabrielle and Joxer have just returned from locking the back door to the temple, when he steps in front of her.)
Jox: "Gabrielle-- um-- I, uh-- uh-- can I talk to you for a minute?"
Gabrielle: "Right now?" (She's literally hopping from one foot to the other, itching to get back into fighting position near Xena, the peacenik)
Joxer: "Yes. I can't have you-- dying, again-- and not have you know."
Gabrielle: "Know what?"
Joxer: (He looks up to the ceiling) "Oh. Brother, I had this all worked out in my head and, now... "
Gabrielle: (Still hopping, TRYING to be polite) "Please, will you hurry? Please."
Joxer: "I love you. I'm in love with you."
Gabrielle: [whispers as her face goes into shock] "I-- "

Then Gabrielle hears Ares shout from outside the temple, and all thought is lost as Gabrielle runs forward to fullfill her promise to always be there, to protect Xena.

Remember the good old days, even when Xena was being driven mad by the Furies, she could still out think the god of war?

Guess what! Even when she's a peacable girl she can outhink TWO gods of war!

She places the chakram of light back in its place on the altar. Its place? Yup, the chakram of light sits in the light part of the yin-yang symbol. (Which makes it the DARK part of the light symbol, BUT I DIGRESS!) She then takes her broken chakram and places it on the empy spot in the dark half of the yin-yang symbol (making it the white spot of the symbol). Heat and light erupt from the altar, healing the dark chakram just as Kal the war god enters the front door and tosses Xena aside like a sack of potatoes.

Gabrielle isn't pleased, and jumps between Kal and the chakrams on the altar. She manages to plunge her sharp scythes into Kal's abdomen, but he's unimpressed and knocks her to the floor before the altar. He raises his sword to behead the battling bard, when Xena jumps up and grabs the Light chakram from the altar and uses it to cut Kal.

Did I mention the reason the war gods wanted the Light chakram all along, was because IT had the power to KILL gods?

Bye bye Kal.

Poor Xena. She's still a peacenik, but now she's also a murderer. Enter Ares, who's trying to sweet-talk her into giving him the chakram. She looks like she's wavering, but as she does her hand reaches out and slowly picks up the Dark Chakram, her OLD one.

The scrolls say, if the two chakrams come together, the power to kill gods is neutralized, and that's EXACTLY what peaceloving Xena wanted. She brings the two together over her head, and they go through some really neat digital morphing to create one "super" chakram.

Oh... the action does more than that. Once the two chakrams of light and dark come together, it recreates OUR Warrior princess with a VENGENCE which she proves immediately by throwing the super chakram at Kal's minions, taking out half a dozen with a throw.

Loved it when she caught the new chakram for the first time.

Xena: (To kal's men) "Hands off!"
Gabrielle: (Runs in to stand "behind" Xena this time) "Welcome back."
Xena:
(For the first time in the ep... the ACTRESS lets us see XENA in all her glory) "It's good to be back.

HUZZAH! :bolian::bolian::bolian:

So, Ares leaves without the chakram of light to protect him from Eli's new God.

Eli stays in Caleb's wickedly beautiful digs over the waterfalls, to study scrolls (Loved it when Xena told him "sounds dull" and he told her any life without HER in it would be dull).

Gabrielle tries to acknowledge Joxer's revelation re: his love, but the gallant young man is smart enough to remember Xena's advice and reassures her...

Gabrielle: [Interrupts] "-- about what you said-- "
Joxer: "It's OK. It's OK. It's just-- you don't have to say anything. You don't have to say anything. You don't have to say a word. It's just, I, I, um I wanted to, uh just let you know. [Clears throat] I just wanted to let you know. No strings."

And as the quartet now heads off for Greece... a last heart to heart occurs...

Gabrielle: "It feels so good to be going home."
Xena: "Going home in more ways than one. Thanks, Gabrielle."
Gabrielle: "For what?"
Xena: "For pointing the way back to my rotten old self."
Gabrielle: "It's a pleasure. Did I do that?"
Xena: "I didn't think about it at the time, but when I asked for a sign to show that I was doing the right thing, you showed up."
Gabrielle: "Hmm, you know what they say? Timing is everything."
Xena: "Yeah. Well, not everything."

Correction, Gabby's new weapon is spelled sai not scythe. :alienblush:

Mea culpa.

And I'm sorry to say, she's not featured in any google images on the first 42 pages of sai images. :scream:

Thankfully, she's all over the search which includes her name with the weapon! :bolian:

Feel free to carry on about your business. :mallory:

episode 93 season 5 #3 "Succession"

Talk about a "teaser". This is how the ep begins. Mavican, the warlord wannabe, thinks she's the right woman to replace Xena in Ares' plans for world domination. She doesn't get it, even after Ares blows chakram smoke rings after their roll in the satin sheets. She's pissed at his response. He's more so as he tells her to be gone by the time he gets home.

NOT a happy start to the ep.

Switch scenes to outdoors, as bandits go flying through the air, courtesy of one very ticked off Warrior Princess. We don't see the actual battle, we just see one bandit after the other go flying through the air to land in the river or in a field. What we HEAR, however, is a woman not being taken seriously despite all she's done in the last 2 1/2 eps to prove her fighting mettle to a certain Warrior Princess.

Finally we see the young woman walking into a courtyard to fill her water bags at the fountain of Demeter. She's still grousing to herself about being shut out of the last fight.

Gabrielle: "I'm not a kid anymore. You think that she would know that." (Suddenly, Ares appears at her side)
Ares: "Considering all you've been through... "
Gabrielle: "Ares, whatever you're looking for, look somewhere else. Mm-m!"
Ares: "Do I always have to be after something? You've been away awhile. Maybe I missed you. Maybe I'm trying to help."
Gabrielle: (She sure knows her war god!) "You only help yourself."
Ares: "Aw ultimately, that is true but it doesn't mean I don't understand. Here, let me take a shot at this. Uh Xena has been overprotective of you. She's been treatin' you like you're still... "
Gabrielle: (Her frustration boils over) "They were five bandits-- five of them. She could have handled four and I would have been happy with just one. But, no-no, she had to take them all.
Ares:
(Who's he talking about?) "It is hard to shed your perceptions of a person."
Gabrielle: "I'm tired of it." (Obviously, or she wouldn't be confiding in ARES of all gods!)
Ares: (Watches Gabrielle pull her sai from the melon she "killed" earlier and twirl it) "Hey I notice you're gettin' pretty good with those."
Gabrielle: (Accepts the compliment) "At least, someone noticed. So, Xena doesn't appreciate that I've been practicing this... (then Gabby realizes Ares has disappeared as quickly as he came. As she walks away, Mavican vaults into the picture with her spear in one hand, and her attitude turned up to the max. She's thrown two ninja stars through the water bags Gabrielle is carrying.) Who are you?"
Mavican:
"The name is Mavican. I'm looking for Xena."
Gabrielle:
(You see Gabby's hackles rise, as her body goes on full alert) "What do you want with her?"
Mavican: "I wanna kill her, and I understand that killing you is the best way to meet her."

TEASER ends.

Okay, I want to stick around after the credits to see what happens!

Act 1 opens with a fight, and NOT the one you'd expect. Mavican has thrown her spear at Gabrielle, but out of NO-WHERE Xena appears, running between Gabby and Mavican in time to CATCH said spear.

Gabrielle: (Very ticked off) "Xena, I had her."
Xena: "Yeah, yeah." (disbelieving???)
Mavican: "That was incredible. I'd have to say, Xena, you are one person where the hype isn't enough."
Xena: "You wanted so talk to me so, talk."
Mav: "Talk? No, no, no, I wanted to kill you, still do, actually. Yah-h-h-hah-h-h-h! Yah-h-h-hah-h-h!"
Xena: "Who are you?"
Mavican: "I'm your successor. I'm taking your place. Ares doesn't believe it, yet, but we're going to convince him. Hah-h-h-h-h-h!"

Act 1 reminds us that Xena has a new chakram, and man is it kewl! It splits itself in half and attacks from 2 different directions. Mavican, for her part, is no slouch and easily flips and vaults her way to safety. She and Xena have such a great fight that one can be forgiven if you don't stop and say... "Doesn't Xena look really pregnant in this ep?" I mean really, we've gone from slight baby bump last week which could be hidden by a longer dress/blouse, to someone who looks to be 5 months pregnant. (Even more important, neither Xena or Gabrielle, much less Ares and Mavican seem to notice!)

Ares arrives before the two women can destroy Demeter's temple completely and tries to calm the waters.

Ares: "Oh she's not my idea. She's just some hothead I picked up for a little, uh diversion? Now she thinks she's my right hand girl."
Mavican: "You know, Ares, your problem is that you don't see potential. See, you're still hung up on what you had and lost, Xena. Well, I'm here to let you know, there's better. (She throws her dagger at Xena, but before Xena can react GABRIELLE flings her sai and deflects the dagger away from the Warrior Princess much to Xena AND Mavican's surprise and Ares' delight.) Huh!"

Ares does need a successor to Xena, and he arranges a little competition in another reality. If Mavican kills Xena, she wins and Ares will bring her home. BUT, if Xena kills Mavican, she LOSES and stays where she is for all time.

Gabrielle: "That's not fair!"
Ares: "Oh?! You're going too, Gabrielle! Of course, if anyone wants my help, all she's gotta do is call!"

Mavican jumps into the vortex, certain she'll win the day. Xena and Gabrielle resist its pull a little longer...

Xena: "Ares, we're not playing your little game."
Ares: "I didn't ask if you wanted a choice. Maybe she's got a point. Is there someone better than you? Don't you think I've waited long enough to find out?" The speed of the vortex increases, pulling Gabrielle into it first. That's when Xena lets go, following her friend.

The story that follows is reminiscent of Ladyhawk, and even TNG's Masks (?). Our two friends are separated. Gabrielle ends up in a dark prison, and Xena ends up in a meadow, fighting Mavican. When the sun sets, we see Gabby awaken next to a tree stump, and we see Xena in the prison, but with one alteration. Xena can see everything Gabrielle is doing, which includes finding Mavican's camp and subduing her "temporarily" until Mavican knocks her out.

Gabby awakens near dawn, and finds herself in a large cage (think Xena in "The Debt I" just much bigger) and is forced to listen to Mavican prattle on about Xena...

Mavican: "Did you have a nice nap? You know? It's strange. I really thought Xena would have done something during the night under the cover of darkness. At least, that's what I would have done. So, what's it like? I mean being with Xena? It's like
a brush with eternity, isn't it?"
Gabrielle: "What are you talking about?"
Mavican: "Oh, Gabrielle, please you're a part of making the legend true. Those scrolls you write. Yeah, I got ahold of one a while back. You know? You really should write more. I'm gonna need someone to write me into history after I kill her."
Gabrielle: "I hate to tell you this, but history is fickle."
Mav: "History will remember me, Gabrielle!"
Gabrielle: "Why? Because you think you might kill someone?"
Mavican: "You don't get it. Ares doesn't get it. People will talk about me for ages, the woman who stood toe-to-toe with Xena and win or lose? I'll be remembered."
Gabrielle:
"You need help."

As sun rises, she and we realize why Xena didn't attack at night. Gabrielle, in the cage, morphs into Xena at dawn and Mavican is ecstatic!

Xena: "Ares put me and Gabrielle into one being."
Mavican: "You get the day shift, she gets the night watch. [Snickers] Oh, come on, Xena, you've gotta admit, it's pretty funny. He got her out of the way so you wouldn't get distracted. Of course, I kill you, I kill her, and I was just beginning to
like her. Oh, well... "

So, Xena is trapped in a cage, and Mavican just has to use one of her many sharpened spears to skewer her, so naturally Xena escapes. (I love this character!) While wandering through the forest, she discovers a porous rock which made me flash onto Kirk and the Gorn in Trek's Arena, but I.... you know. Ares appears and he has a little tete e tete with Xena.

Ares: [Chuckles] "I swear. Hey, Xena I want your honest opinion objectively. I mean, she's better than I thought."
Xena: "I don't get, Ares-- all this just to see your new girlfriend fight?"
Ares: "No-o-o-o-- watch my old girlfriend fight. I've missed it."
Xena: "Where you been?" (Yeah, dude, you were AWOL 21 out of 22 eps last year, that's not HER fault!)

Ares: "Oh, yeah.... I just wanna find out if anybody else has got it."
Xena: "And what about Gabrielle? Is she up in the dark little room you set up?"
Ares: "Ya like that, huh? Yeah, I thought it might fire ya up if you could watch the game. And, no Gabrielle is there, but she can't see us."
Xena: "So, what's the point? Why have ya joined us both together so that we can both fight Mavican individually?"
Ares: "Why not? Besides, she's gettin' pretty good at it. She's smart too, even though someone doesn't want to admit it. She's already figured out part of the riddle."
Xena: "That I can't kill Mavican but Gabrielle can? Well, you'd like that, wouldn'tcha? (Ares smiles and disappears, making Xena to rethink the problem at hand.) You'd like that, wouldn'tcha?"

Xena works all day setting a trap for Mavican at sundown. She even calls Mavican to her camp, using that porous rock to color her campfire smoke, making it easier to spot. As Mavican arrives, Xena entwines her in a thorn laced woodvine, and the sun sets as she morphs back into Gabrielle.

Remember, Mavican and Xena know whats happening, Gabby doesn't as she suddenly finds herself astride Mavican.

Gabrielle: "Where's Xena?"
Mavican: "You really don't know? Ares has put the two of you in the same body. You get the nights, she gets the day. Problem is you're stuck with me for the night or at least long enough for me to kill you."

Mavican escaped from the vines only to be felled by another trap released when Gabby picked up the staff Xena left for her.

Xena watches as Gabrielle escapes, then suddenly her prison morphs into the war god's great hall.

Ares: "You have to like her style, the focus, the intensity, the ability to learn and adapt. She is just incredible. I can't believe I took her for granted for so long."
Xena: "You're just using Mavican to get to me, Ares. It won't work. Why don't you give up on me?"
Ares: "Xena, I have given up on you. And what makes you think I was talkin' about Mavican?"
Xena: (realization FINALLY dawns on Xena) "This is about Gabrielle. You're not testing Mavican. You're after Gabrielle."
Ares:
(Callisto isn't the only one in a triangle with X&G!) "You're not jealous? I mean, despite what Mavican thought, I have been thinking about your heir. And who better than one you trained?"
Xena: (Anger rising to fever pitch!) "You leave her out of this."
Ares: "Arrogance! There's the fire, there's the anger you lost."
Xena: (Spits) "She'll never follow you."
Ares: "Well, she hasn't heard my offer yet. And, anyway, how well do you really know her, anymore? Well, I guess we'll find out, when she kills Mavican."

Gabby flees and regroups inside a cave. Its there that she finds Xena left her more than the staff. She left a note written on the underside of the tree bark Xena used to cover the staff.

What follows is the most unusual X/G campfire scene of the series, with Xena watching silently from her prison, as Gabrielle reads the "letter" from her absent friend.

Xena's Voice: "`If you read this, you'll know that I'm here. Ares has merged us into the same body. But the same way that the world shares day and night, never sees the same two together. Mavican is tough, but we can defeat her. A lot of it depends on you, though. You've figured out part of Ares' riddle, but you can't kill her, Gabrielle. It's something that Ares wants to see and I don't know why, yet. Together, we can get out of this."

Just in time.

(Much of this next seduction scene is intercut with Xena, watching Ares and gabrielle from her prison cell)

Ares: "Hello, Gabrielle."
Gabrielle: (Looks up from the spring where she's bathing her shoulder wound) "What do you want?"
Ares: "I've been watching you. I think you've got potential."
Gabrielle: "Potential for what? N-n-never mind. I really don't want to know."
Ares: "You've also got a slanted opinion of me. OK only somewhat slanted, but I'm serious. You're not quite there yet,but maybe I've been dismissing you too easily over the years. Maybe the heir to Xena's throne has been right in front of me all along."
Gabrielle: "Are you out of your mind?"
Ares: "How's your wound? OK? Here's the deal. I've learned a few things from Xena, a-a-and, perhaps my way of peace through power isn't quite what I thought it was."
Gabrielle: "You are so full of-- "
Ares [Interrupts]: "No-- now, that is Xena's problem these days. She's so set in her ways. She won't even make an effort to see change. Now, you should know that more than anyone. It's OK. You don't have to answer. It's obvious. It's painfully obvious. So, please, don't do to me what Xena does to you. Just, just hear me out, honestly. OK"
Gabrielle: "OK?"

So Ares lays out his plan for Gabby to be the compassionate warlord that Xena could never be. He promises Xena will be safe back home in Amphipois with her Mother. All Gabrielle has to do is one little thing...

Ares: "....Mavican is really intent on killing Xena. Of course her destiny is in your hands. With this (He produces one of Gabrielle's sai) you can kill Mavican. Now, you do that and I'll know you're ready." (He disappears, leaving Gabby and the sai behind)
Mavican: (Enters the cave) "Nice place, room for one more?"
(From her prison cell, an anguished Princess cries out.)
Xena's Voice: "No, Gabrielle!" [Then whispers, prays...] "Don't do it. Don't do it."

Gabrielle faces down Mavican, and refuses to kill her. She tries to reason with the wannabe warlord, but to no avail.

Gabrielle: "Ares wants me to kill you. If I do that, then he wins and we all lose! I'm not gonna do it. [Gabrielle throws away the sai, and turns back to the spring where she was bathing her wound as Ares entered. The sun is coming up, and the girl from Potadiea looks into the water and sees Xena looking back.] Xena."

She's backkkkk!!!!!!

Xena knows Mavican's weakness. She WANTS to be remembered. So Xena causes a landslide, buryin gthem both in the cave. She then knocks Mavican into an abbys and both grab the wood vines to keep from falling. Xena taunts her with the idea the upstart will be left forgotten and "tricks" Mavican into calling the god of war for help.

Ares: "Mavican-- are you asking for my help?"
Mavican: "Yes, I'm asking for your help, god of war."
Xena: (Smiles knowingly at the god of war) "She's asking for your help." (Ares opens the vortex and sends Xena back before closing it once again)
Mavican: "What are you doing, Ares?! You said I could ask!"
Ares: (Very disappointed) "Yeah-- I said ya could. I never said ya should."

And finally we have our two friends back where they started, in the courtyard of Demeter's temple, with a disguntled god of war.

Xena: "Years ago, Ares said to me that anyone who asked for his help doesn't deserve it. So, when Mavican asked... "
Gabrielle: "... she lost."
Ares: "I really gotta be more careful with my riddles. (To Gabrielle) The offer's still open. Think about it." (Winks away)
Xena: "You know, I'm surprised that you didn't consider it. What he said..." (about Xena and Gabrielle)
Gabrielle: "Xena, what he said doesn't matter. I know you. Sometimes I wonder if you really know me, but I know what's in your heart."
Xena: "Then you know more than I do. Gabrielle, I do see you. Sometimes, I have trouble facing it, but I promise, I will."
Gabrielle:[Sighs] "You don't know how much that means. Maybe, Ares did some good after all, huh?" (Ares, the TRUE god of love???)
Xena: "Tell you what-- " (As she walks them away, Xena drapes her arm over Gabrielle's shoulders, including the wounded left one)
Gabrielle: "Ow." (And Gabby picks Xena's arm up off her shoulder as they walk away)
Xena: "... the next bad guy we come across is all yours. The next seven little bad guys we come across, they're all yours."
Gabrielle: "`Little?' Is that a crack about my height?"
Xena: "No, they're just harder for me to reach." [Chuckles]

Correction, Gabby's new weapon is spelled sai not scythe. :alienblush:

Mea culpa.

And I'm sorry to say, she's not featured in any google images on the first 42 pages of sai images. :scream:

Thankfully, she's all over the search which includes her name with the weapon! :bolian:

Feel free to carry on about your business. :mallory:

Thinking about a certain blonde Slayer with a scythe were we?;)

One thing I forgot to mention, we've seen the last of Callisto, a shame but a nice ending for her (although i think Hudson will turn up again as Liz Friedman in Hercules)
So here we have combat Gabby and peacenik Xena! Also not only does Joxer fight well against Kal's men, saving Xena (one story he can tell his kids with truth and pride) he actually pays for the girls shopping spree, despite being feminist icons they often let him pay for stuff.
More Xena nudity, I wonder is that Lucy or Polly sitting in the tub behind Joxer? What you make of Ares/Xena depends pretty much if you believe he's her dad or not
Do we ever learn the story behind the chakram? Or how Xena comes to own it in the first place?

As for Succession two things strike me about it. But enough about Mavican's cleavage:lol::drool::techman:
The rest is ok, certainly demonstrating to Xena how formidable Gabby has now become. I remember the opening scene was pretty graphically sexual, I always wondered how the parents explained it to their adorable six year olds who came to conventions in home made Xena outfits?

(1) Actually, "no, I wasn't" thinking about a certain blonde slayer, since I've not watched that series yet. :) (Its on my list of things to buy!)

(2) Correction, :alienblush: we see the "angel" Callisto at least once more. (Think Eli.)

(3) Hmmm. He gets to sleep with Xena AND Gabrielle next to the campfire. Yup, I can see him forking over a few dinars for THAT privilege. And don't forget, they pulled his bacon out of the fire during "In sickness and in Hell"

(4) I suspect its Polly walking in the background and climbing into the tub. As for who's sitting in it, my money is on Lucy.

(5) They never come out and say so, but since he stole it from Kal in the first place, I suspect Ares gave it to Xena when he named her "his" Warrior Princess.

(6) Didn't notice!

(7) Good golly, :wtf: considering all the stabbing and beheading going on, not to mention Callisto killing kids in season 1... I hope they aren't letting them watch at all. Dressing up is one thing, emulating is quite another.

(IIRC, there's an interview out there somewhere with Lucy saying her kids weren't old enough to watch Xena, cuz she didn't want them hitting each other like they did on the TV show) :guffaw:

Ares/Xena/Gabrielle: The eternal triangle, now that Callisto has "retired" from the game.

Episode 94 season 5 # 4 "Animal Attraction"

Lets start with the disclaimer at the end.

"Although The Rabbit Died, No other animals were harmed during the production of this motion picture."

Oh, first the thing I "don't" like. Trying to figure out where they actually are in the story. Seems like this one should have preceeded "Succession", since 2 eps ago our quartet left Eli at Caleb's sanctuary, last "week" we JUST saw Xena and Gabrielle, and THIS "week" we see the quartet again. Given what Gabrielle says in the end ("Race you to Greece") you'd think our band of sisters/brother hadn't arrived yet. Then again, where the heck did Armon come from?

Oh, right, must not focus on logic when it comes to our traveling friends, especially given what's going to happen in another few eps.

Loved the teaser, where Gabrielle is walking along side Argo as Xena rides, confiding how uncomfortable she feels after Joxer's proclamation... and Xena just sleeps through most of it.

(Amarice and Joxer are trudging along on point, with Gabby & Xena 30-40 feet behind.)
Amarise: "All the women I know are. We don't need a man to get along. In fact, as far as they're concerned, you guys are totally dispensable."
Joxer: "Hmm. Hmm. Yeah." (Sneaks yet another look over his shoulder at Gabrielle)
Gabrielle: "He did it again."
Xena: "What? Aw I must have missed it. I think I dozed off."
Gabrielle: "Yeah, you've been doing that a lot lately."
Xena: "Yeah. I've been taking hornbain and olive, but it doesn't seem to be helping. I guess I just need a bit more sack time, huh?" (Argo has something to say about THAT prescription as Xena responds to the horse!) "What are you? A healer?" (to Gabrielle again) "Nah, I'm just tired. Why, what did I miss?"
Gabrielle: "Joxer gave me one of those looks again. Xena, when he said he loved me, he said that he didn't expect anything from me. Clearly, he does. I'm trying to be sensitive. Do you have any advice?"
Xena: (Wakes up again with a start) "Huh? "

Suddenly both Xena and Argo go on alert, as they hear someone in distress. Away our newly awakened Princess gallops, with Gabrielle in hot (2 footed) pursuit, dragging Amarise along. Joxer tries to stop her for a chat and ends up chasing the women until they catch up with Xena.

Xena has found a horse, one who's hoof is caught in a metal bear trap. (Don't think they had them back then, but that WON'T be the first time I say that this "week". ;) ) Xena has lassoed him, and tied the rope to Argo's saddle horn to steady him. Xena, keen as she always is in these matters, immediately realizes the male horse has taken a shine to Gabrielle and has Gabrielle act as a distraction while Xena frees him from his trap.

There's a cute moment when Xena talks about letting him run free, and Gabrielle looks up to protest. You almost can hear her say, "But he followed me home, can't I keep him, Pretty please?"

The courtship of Gabrielle and the horse goes MUCH better than Joxer and Gabrielle, to no one's surprise except maybe Joxer. I liked how in the end, the horse came to Gabby's rescue. (Huzzah!)

There were lots of little things weaving in and out of this ep... Xena hooking up with her old friend Talia who's the sherriff in town... Armon coming back from season 4, and falling in love with Amarice... NOT to mention VICE a VERSA, much to Joxer's glee.

Oh... did I mention that the whole ep was an homage to the spaghetti western? Including spurs, long duster cloaks, saloons with swinging doors and bartenders who think its funny when you order "milk", showdowns on main street between the sheriff and the bad guy she ONCE was married to, and a moving sundial ticking the time down till the final battle.

I didn't? Darn. :wtf:

Oh... something else happened in this ep. Gabrielle made Xena go to the local doctor to get a second opinion on her "condition".

Its in German, but the Doc just told her she was in good condition... "considering". She demanded to know considering "what" and he tells her. "You're pregnant."

This is in German too, but I "don't" think I need to translate.

I don't "need to"... but Lucy Lawless' adlibbing (according to the director) is so wonderful, I will!

Xena: "It's impossible! I can-not be pregnant. If you weren't such a quack, you would know that getting pregnant involves certain physical requirements that I haven't met in a long time, and I mean a very long time. No one, zilch, zippo. I am a love-free zone. Therefore, it is utterly impossible that I be up the duff. So, what's your diagnosis, now?"
Doc: "Mood swings!"

Xena walks around town, hurling in various open barrels, smelling the flowers and speaking in a very UNXena like tone to a stuffed teddy bear, trying to deny the obvious. So naturally she goes to the sheriff to offer her help to fight the warlord coming to town. The sheriff basically says thanks but no thanks. Her exhusband is HER problem, and anyway this daughter of a midwife KNOWS Xena's condition and can't ask her to fight while pregnant.

Xena: "Talia, this must end here. Face it, you're going to need a little help. That's what I'm here for."
Talia: "No. No, I stand up to Darkon or I don't, but either way, I am not gonna let you take him on for me, especially pregnant." (Xena is SHOCKED!) "Oh, come on. Who's kidding herself, now? The need for sleep? The cravings?" (Xena's cravings = Raw fish and raspberry jam!) The nausea? Hey-hey, not to mention, you know you're looking a little..." (Makes the universal sign for large/bloated) "My mother was a midwife, Xena. Wake up and smell the diapers."
Xena:
[Gasps]

Xena leaves Talia and heads straight for the saloon, where she orders milk and runs into Amarise, a junior princess with her first "boy" problem.

Amarise: "Xena, hey. I've been looking all over for you. I think I'm in trouble."
Xena: "What, is it in the water?"
Amarise: "Huh? I'm talking about Armon?"
Xena: "Well, what about him?"
Ama: "Well, you see, that's the trouble. Every Amazon instinct I have says keep away, but my heart just says go for it. Have you ever had this problem before?"
Xena: "Apparently. Listen, Amarice, either you kiss him-- or you kill him. But, either way, it doesn't seem to make a difference." :rommie:

The sheriff rides out of town. Armon and Amarise kiss and breakup. With Argo's help and a little insight, Gabrielle and her new best horse friend make a break through... and Xena comes to the stable to have her first real heart to heart about her "condition.

The camera is only on Xena.

Xena: (Very nervous) "I've got something I wanna tell you. Just stay put. Believe me, you don't wanna be standing when you hear this. Not that it's bad. See, I would sense that and it's not, but there is this small question of how it happened, and once you get past that, it's really great." (She stops and looks disgusted at the listener) "Don't give me that look like you knew. You didn't know. I didn't even know, and I'm the one who's expecting. (We finally see she's talking to Argo) "Or, maybe you did know, but don't let on to the others. I wanna tell them myself. Gabrielle's gonna freak." :bolian: :guffaw: :bolian: :guffaw:

Xena tries to mend the spat between Armon and Amarise, which means it blows up even bigger as the two come searching for Xena. Xena has come searching for Gabrielle who was absent from the stable earlier, but is now back.

Gabrielle: (She's offering an apple to the horse and he takes it.) "Come on. Come on, handsome."
Amarise: "Xena?! Xena! You said, `Kiss him, or kill him,' right?"
Armon [Interrupts loudly]: "Come on, I tried it."
Amarise [Interruptsmore loudly]: "Well, I could kill him!"
Armon [Interrupts ]: "... I couldn't seem to.. "
Amarise [Interrupts]: "I was totally... !"
Gabrielle: [Interupts] "Will you guys shut up?! Shut up, please! The horse... "
Xena: [Quietly] "I'm pregnant."
Gabrielle: (Turns to Xena without listening) "Xena, can you tell them, please?"
Xena:
(Shouting louder and louder till everyone else shuts up!) "I'm pregnant! I'm pregnant!"
[ACT IV]
Gabrielle:
"You're pregnant? How can you be pregnant? Xena, I mean, when did you... ? Who d... ?"
Xena: "I don't know."
Joxer: (To Armon, who promptly elbows him to shut up) "And you asked her advice on your love life."

I agree with the writer and director that Renee really nailed it when she responded to Xena's news. (Sorry, can't find the interviews on youtube yet) I also liked the writer's point about how revealing this news in a comedy allowed us to "let certain questions linger" until the next week's episode, whereas a drama would demand everything be tied up "now".

Gabrielle: "You don't know?"
Xena: "Gabrielle, this is as strange to me as it is to you. I don't understand it, but it's true. I felt it with Solon and I feel it now. There's life within me, and it's good."
Gabrielle: (Still in shock, Gabrielle finally hugs her best friend, who "seems' to be keeping things from her.) "Congratulations"

So the story continues apace, the bad guys are coming, the sheriff is missing, and Xena arrays her troops about town. She and Gabrielle are on the 2nd floor of one building, watching the approaches. Gabrielle has one eye on the road, and one eye on Xena's belly.

(Still in German, but you get the idea.)

Gabrielle: "You don't have the slightest idea?"
Xena: "No. Look, we've been through this a thousand times. I don't."
Gabrielle: "How can you not know? I, I just find that hard to believe, you know?"
Xena: "Tell me."
Gabrielle: "Ares. Maybe he did a god thing... " (Close, Gabby, but no cigar)
Xena: (Waves her finger to shut down THAT line of thought immediately!) "No."
Gabrielle:
"OK, fine." (Coyly) When was the last time we saw Hercules? I forget, I can't..." :p

For people tired of German... ;)

So the bad guys ride in, the sheriff meets her ex and defeats him in combat, Amarise and Armon make up and fight the baddies side by side, the horse saves Gabby in the end, and becomes Gabrielle's new (2nd) best friend.

I liked the end. Xena has saddled Argo and is watching Gabrielle saddle "nameless".

Xena: "Well, congratulations. Looks like we're a two-horse family."
Gabrielle: "Yeah, family being the operative word. "
Xena: "Yeah, how about that, huh?"
Gabrielle: "You know what I think? I think it's the beginning of a beautiful relationship."
Xena: "Yup..." (pats her belly) "...for all of us."

They lead their horses out of the stable and we watch Gabrielle mount "nameless" for the first time, allowing our pregnant Xena to mount more gracefully off screen.

Gabrielle: (Trying to control her horse as he prances about) "Hi. Whoo! Whoa, boy. Whoa. Come on, Xena. Race ya to Greece?"
Xena:
"I don't know if you're ready for that."
Gabrielle: "Are you chicken?"
Xena: "No, just being considerate. We race to Greece, and you won't be able to walk straight for a month."

:rommie:  :rommie:  :rommie:

Hey, I liked it, and it was a welcome respite considering what's coming up next.

In the dvd interviews, the writer (Chris Manheim) expressed disappointment that Joxer's story line was incomplete due to time constraints. :vulcan:

Perhaps your opinion would have improved if they had delivered on their earlier teases into the G/J relationship.

As for the nice fluff of the pregnancy "stuff", I loved it. Especially poor Gabrielle trying to understand WHO/ HOW/ WHEN Xena connected with someone on their journey.

Just glad Gabby never suspected JOXER! If she had... I can see the "shotgun wedding" now. (Deliberate "western" reference!)

Episode95, season 5 #5 "Them Bones Them Bones"

This ep makes "Sin Trades" look like a comedy.

And like all heavy duty angsty eps, it begins with 30 sec of comedy.

Enjoy it while you can. :techman:

Gabrielle: "Xena, what does this herb look like?"
Xena: "A mushroom-- just a plain old mushroom."
Gabrielle: "I think this is it." (Skewers a flat mushroom in the mud with her sai) "You're telling me that this is going to help you with morning nausea."
Xena: "That's what they say. Come on. Gimme, gimme." (Looks slightly disgusted as she prepares to swallow the muddy fungus) Al-l-l-l-l-l right. Well, bottom's up. Uh. " (Makes ANOTHER face) "some warrior, huh?"
Gabrielle: (smiles) "You look beautiful."
Xena: "Huh!"
Gabrielle: "You do!"
Xena:
"I feel like a slug-- a pregnant slug."
Gabrielle: "You're happy, Xena."
Xena: "Oh, yeah?"
Gabrielle: "Yeah. You know how I know?"
Xena: "No."
Gabrielle: "'Cause it's the only time you make fun of yourself."
Xena: "Well, maybe I'm happy 'cause I know I don't have to go through this alone."
Gabrielle: (Turns up her nose at Xena) "I'm not eating mushrooms."

Okay... did you like that? Good. :bolian:

Because, as they say, "Fasten your seat belts, its going to be a BUMPY ride!" :klingon:

(How's your Portugese?)

Xena: [Chuckles at first, then her face goes grave as Gabby walks towards her horse] "Oh-h-h! Gabrielle?"
Gabrielle: (She quickly runs to Xena's side) "You OK?"
Xena: (Face improves as the pain subsides) "Yeah, yeah, I think it was just a cra... (Her face contorts in severe pain as her knees start to buckle)
Gabrielle: (Gabby catches her as she starts to fall) "Do I take you to a healer?"
Xena: [Screams even louder as she slides down Gabrielle's body]

[Scene shifts from the meadow where our two friends were hunting mushrooms, to a healer's hut. Xena is being carried in on a stretcher, and she's screaming.]
Xena: [Screams]
Midwife: "Come on! Come on! Bring her in quickly!"
Xena: "Gabrielle! Gabrielle! Something's gone wrong! Something's wrong!"
Midwife: "How far along is she?"
Gabrielle: (trying to hold Xena down on the exam table) "Uh, about a season."
Xena: [Screams] "Get me something!" [ and she goes into spasms extremely familiar to those of us who love "Aliens 2", swiping the dishes from the table next to her]
Gabrielle: (Becoming frantic) "Healer, give her something!"
Xena: (She starts pulling at her clothes and bares her pregnant abdomen) "Get it off me!"
Midwife: "I've never seen anything like this!"
Xena: [Screams as she watches her abdomen erupt and a baby skeleton crawl out of her] "Get it off me! Get it off! Get this off me!" [Screams Again!]

And for those of us who love "Alien 2", we recognize Ripley's fevered nightmare that a face hugger has implanted itself within her, and is trying to come out.

Which means this isn't reality, it's a fevered nightmare that Xena is experiencing. Or, as she tells a worried Gabrielle and a concerned Amarice (who literally appeared from no-where) ...

Xena: "That was no dream I had. It was a premonition. Something's trying to kill my baby."

Remember, Xena is a gifted healer and can tell when something's amiss. So she grabs Argo and the three women gallop towards Siberia and the Northern Amazon tribe that Xena helped to destroy 12+ years ago and rebuild last year. She picked Yakut to be their new Shamaness, and needs her to help diagnose her problem. And after putting Amarise in her place, Yakut does just that.

Yakute: "The entity that stalks your child, Xena bears the mark of the shamaness. You know who it is, don't you?"
Xena: "Alti."

Loved it when Gabby played fangirl for us and asked the obvious question...

Gabrielle: "But Xena killed Alti." (Duh! She actually did it twice, but who's counting!)

The beauty of different planes of existance, is that even dead villians can return to make our heroine's life a living hell.

Gabrielle: "Then, how do we kill someone that we can't see."
Yakute: "Xena is preparing to do battle with Alti in her realm, but I'm afraid, in her condition, she won't win."
Gabrielle: "Then I guess I have to convince her to let me go."

After fighting with Xena about letting her "cross over" to fight Alti in the land of the dead, Gabrielle goes through the same rituals we saw Xena perform last year before crossing over.

You know what a sucker I am for "heart to hearts", right? Mine just about melted before Gabrielle crossed over.

Xena: "Give me your hand. The stag's blood mingled with your own will carry you across to the other side. My blood (She's just cut Gabrielle's palm with the ceremonial dagger, and is now cutting her own before grasping Gabrielle's) mixed with yours, will be your link to the physical world. When you drink (the stag's blood) , you will begin to cross over. Carry the dagger with you. On no account should you let go of it. It's our only chance to kill Alti in the spiritual realm. If we can destroy her there, we destroy her soul."
Gabrielle: "I understand."
Xena: "Remember, don't let go of the dagger."
Gabrielle: "I won't. Xena, don't let go of me."
Xena:
"Never."

This is Gabrielle's first trip into the land of the Amazon dead, and she quickly learns she's undermatched in a fight with the evil shamaness, Alti.

Alti: "Xena's little bitch. Welcome to the doghouse."

Xena stands by helplessly as she watches her friend's body jerk and move as Alti tortures her. When she sees a bloody wound develop on Gabrielle's neck, she realizes her friend is losing, and tries to call her back. Alti loses her grip on Gabby, and drops her to the ground but then pronounces her ability to kill Xena's friend WITHOUT using that ceremonial dagger...

[Physical Realm]
Xena:
"You have the dagger. Use it." (She sees the blood appear on Gabrielle's right neck, as understands immediately) "Alti... All right, Gabrielle, that's enough. Come back, now. All right, that's enough!"

[Spiritual Realm]
Alti:
"I'm gonna count to ten. And during this you will feel your body shutting down. Your heart will stop. You will cease to breathe."
Gabrielle: "Uh!"
Alti: "And at the count of ten you will die."

[Physical Realm]
Xena:
"I want you back here! Gabrielle, you can do no more good!"

[Spiritual Realm]
Alti:
"One."

[Physical Realm]
Xena:
"Can you hear me?"

[Spiritual Realm]
Alti:
(She advances on Gabrielle as our friend tries in vain to crawl away from the Shamaness) "Two. Three. Four. Sharp pains in your arms as your blood pressure lowers. Six. Your brain is screaming. Seven."

[Physical Realm]
Xena:
[Whispers] "Gabrielle."

[Spiritual Realm]
Alti:
"Eight."

[Physical Realm]
Xena:
"Alti's not gonna defeat us this time. Come on, Gabrielle."

[Spiritual Realm]
Alti
: "Nine."

[Physical Realm]
Xena:
[Very Softly] "What's wrong?"

[Spiritual Realm]
Alti:
"One more count and you will be dead."

[Physical Realm]
Xena:
"Gabrielle, this is not your destiny. Come on."

[Spiritual Realm]
Alti:
"Ten!" [Laughs as both Gabrielles, in the spiritual & physical world, stop breathing]

[Physical Realm]
Xena:
[Whispers] "Come on, Gabrielle! [Normal voice] No. [Begins mouth to mouth resuscitation a'la "Is there a Doctor in the House" season 1] Come on. No. [Keeps doing mouth to mouth] Come on. [Sighs with relief as Gabrielle starts gasping/breathing] I gotcha. I gotcha. I gotcha now. Don't you ever do that again. You never do that again."

Okay, so now we ALL can start breathing again! :techman:

So Xena goes to "plan B". They will use the Amazon ritual for restless souls to imprison Alti. The only problem is, it never works according to Yakut.

Hey! This is XENA"S BABY we're trying to save, right! We don't give up because of silly details like that!

Gabrielle and Amarise are tasked to get the sacred Amber from an old mystic that can read the truth in your heart. That's how we discover that Amarise is only an Amazon wannabe, as the mystic sends her packing.

The brash young thing is brash no longer, when Gabrielle comes out of the cave with the amber.

Gabrielle: "I've got it."
Amarise: "You and Xena were right. What you see isn't always what you get. I thought if I denied that enough times, I'd make it true. I had no identity, so I created one. The thing I always wanted to be an Amazon. You know, I just wanted to feel like part of something."
Gabrielle: "Amarice look, for many years, I walked in Xena's shadow. I wanted to be her. She taught me something. It's warmer standing in the sun."
Amarise: "Yeah. [Sighs] Well, you better get going. She's waiting for you."
Gabrielle: "She's waiting for us. Come on."

I "love" THIS Gabrielle! :adore:

While the girls were amber hunting, Xena went looking for Alti's grave. Recall she died in a spiritual duel with Xena early last year. Although she was "skewered on a tree limb" in the spiritual plane, her living body actually died in her hut when her soul died. Xena needs the bones to perform the ritual, but when she and Yakut arrive at Alti's former camp, she discovers something odd.

Xena: "The skull's missing. We've come all this way to rob a grave."
Yakut: (A skull comes tumbling out of a bag that Yakut is carrying) "This is all my fault. I wanted to harvest Alti's power to use it for good. I needed her skull for my ritual but all I did was unleash her soul. And now you and your baby are paying the price. I'm so ashamed. I didn't wanna disappoint you."
Xena: "Disappoint? You don't want to disappoint me. Yakut, my friend almost died yesterday."
Yakut: "I know. That's why I wanna finish what you two started. Let me face Alti myself."
Xena: "No! We stick to the plan!"

Can you guess what happens next?

Yup. Yakut didn't listen.

Xena awakens to find Yakut has crossed over to the land of the dead to fight Alti, and Xena grabs the bag of blood at Yakut's side to drink and follow her into the dead land. Yakut has been captured and tortured, and Xena's greeting isn't much better as Alti forces her "spiritual" hand into Xena's "spiritual" abdomen and grabs the baby's soul.

This scary scene is complimented by the strangest thing we've ever heard an enemy say to our WP before.

Alti: "I've always wanted to be inside of you, Xena."

[Draw your own conclusions!]

Alti wants back into the physical world, and she wants the Amazons to use their mystical powers to do it. The baby's soul is the price of passage.

BUT this is XENA we're talking here... and we know there's always a plan "C".

Xena has re-entered the spiritual realm to confront Alti.

Alti: "What's it gonna be, Xena?"
Xena: "All right, you win. You give me my child's soul, and I will take you back to my world."
Alti: "Tsk-tsk. First, you take me back then you get your child."
Xena: "The ritual's already begun. All you have to do is take my hand."
Alti: "I knew you'd see things my way."

And the two women leave Alti's "camp" in the land of the dead, and Xena seems to reappear in a cavern that has an altar with a grey cracked skeleton laid out. She is alone. We watch as the skeleton knits itself into a mobile creature that stands up to and speaks with Xena with Alti's voice. Xena kept her end of the bargain, but like any good "evil" villian, Alti squelches on her end of the deal and "swallows" the soul of Xena's child, taunting the Warrior Princess as she does.

Xena: "All right, Alti. Give me back my child's soul."
Alti: "Motherhood has made you weak. The Xena I knew would have never given into this so easily."
Xena: "You're right, I'm a big softie. Now, a deal's a deal."
Alti: "Is it? Even in this world, I'm even more powerful than you ever dreamed."
Xena: "You'd be surprised what I can summon up in my dreams."

And we watch as Xena peels off her face to reveal a white skeletal head. She breaks apart her pregnant body to reveal a full skeleton, and taunts Alti with her mistake. She's not in the physical world, but another spiritual one created by Xena's mind. The two battle as only fully articulated skeletons can, and it WAS fun watching Xena dismember Alti one limb at a time, not to mention grab her child's soul back from that witch!

Back at the real Amazon camp, the tribe is channeling their strength to Xena, and even Amarise gets into it by laying hands on the Warrior Princess's body. Finally Gabrielle understands Xena has won her child's soul and takes the sacred amber to sprinkle on Alti's "real" bones, trapping Alti's soul as planned. All that's left is for Gabrielle to call Xena from the land of the dead.

Gabrielle: "Xena, come on."
Xena: [Gasps as she awakens] "Gabrielle."
Gabrielle: (Lifts our WP in her arms) "You did it."
Xena: "We did it."

Xena's last scene with Yakut was "okay", where she talks about "going east" to learn some new tricks to protect her baby, but I very much believe Gabrielle's last scene with Amarise to be far superior.

Amarise: "Xena must think I'm a jerk."
Gabrielle: "I didn't tell her what Chia said."
Amarise: "Why not?"
Gabrielle: "Because, I don't think it's true anymore (About Amarise NOT being an Amazon) . I have this Amazon necklace, and it's from my tribe. There's a stone on here for all my sisters. I just added another one, for you."
Amarise:
(accepts the gift) "Thank you."
Gabrielle: "Better hurry. Xena and I are ready."
Amarise: "Actually, Gabrielle, um I'm gonna stay here, learn a few things."
Gabrielle: [Whispers] "OK." [Normal Voice as she turns to walk away.] See ya."

Great to see Alti back, wonderful to see the junior Amazons return (but where is Otere?), very clever plot, reminiscent in some ways of The Matrix/Nightmare on Elm Street series. Also some pretty excellent CGI but then you must remember Sam and co brought us Evil Dead 3 so they're good with skeletons:)

Alti is so deliciously evil, and so different from Callisto that one really can't compare the two.

I Love evil Callisto, though deep down I suspect she could be "turned to do good".:angel::angel:

I Love evil Alti, and I don't think even an Archangel could turn HER to do good!

season 5 promo.

From Whoosh.org: "Purity"

11-21-99. According to ET, Lucy Lawless was 6 months pregnant when she filmed PURITY and BACK IN THE BOTTLE.

11-13-00. In the June 2000 issue of Chakram, the newsletter of the Official Xena Fan Club, Robert Tapert was interviewed:
Interviewer: Do you have a more personal investment in Xena because this was a character you always wanted to do - a character you helped invent?

Robert Tapert:Yes. I love the bloody show! And no one is more disappointed that this season, for example, the two China episodes, which I felt should have been great, were disasters. They were done during a time of transition of the staff of the show and we tried to shore up the second one, but it didn't work.
Well, I won't say the first was a "disaster", but it definately had its own issues.

Mine start with the opening teaser. The last ep ended with our friends leaving Amarise in Siberia with the Northern Amazons. Xena plans to travel "East" to learn some new tricks.

Instead, she seems to have traveled back towards Greece where she found Joxer who's currently sleeping/snoring on the other side of Gabrielle.

Are they in Ch'in? Don't know, but the way Joxer is complaining as they head for the monastery guarding Lao Ma's book of wisdom, one suspects they aren't.

I won't ask how the monk with his tongue cut out FOUND Xena in the first place. How did the messenger find her in season 3's "Debt I"? How did Amarise find Gabrielle in season 4's "Endgame"? Obviously there's some sort of Bat signal hovering over this woman that we in TV land just can't see.

The second is how old are these daughters? Ming Tien was like 12 (?) when we first met him, and 22? when Xena offed him. So when did Lao ma send them away to protect them? Can't be as infants or even toddlers since Ming Tein wasn't scary as a prepubescent. And if they were sent away older, then why don't they remember it?

By the sound of it, they were sent away BEFORE Xena met their Mom...

Pao : "What brought about your devotion to my mother, Xena?"
Xena: "Your mother helped me find a kind of peace that I'd never known before, and when she died, it died with her."
Pao : "Hmm. And you wish to reclaim what you lost."
Xena: "I'm not sure I ever can."
Pao : "Strange. Why would she abandon her own two daughters, simply to become a surrogate mother to a stranger?

The other thing I have a "problem" with is not only do the daughters know about Xena, but they look upon her as their mother's Greek daughter.

Now this is a strange place I find myself in, since on the trek boards I'm always defending the maternal spin on Janeway's relationships with Seven, B'Elanna, Paris and Kim. But in THIS circumstance I can only roll my eyes at the "incestuous" slant Lao Ma's daughters have applied to Xena's relationship with their Mom. :wtf:

Sorry, but Janeway NEVER kissed Seven underwater "like that", not to mention the fact that she never spent "hours" bathing/shampooing B'Elanna, much less did an ariel dance with either that included the further exchange of personal "gifts" ...and IF SHE DID then I'd have to set down my arguments and walk away defeated.

So, if I forget the presence of Joxer, and the Lao Ma as Xena's "Mom" stuff, there's plenty to like in the ep.

I like how Xena and Kao found a way to interact that was so reminiscent of Xena's early training. I love remembering those lessons which started to calm the angry princess.

Kao: "`The entire world is driven by a will, blind and ruthless. In order to transcend the limitations of the physical world, one must cease desiring '"
Kao and Xena: " and become what we desire.'"
Xena: "`To conquer others is to wield power but to conquer ourselves is to know the way.' Lao Ma's power came from her purity of thought."
Kao: "Then with purity on our side, Pao Su will be easily defeated."
Xena: "No, Pao Su has her own kind of purity, the purity of hatred."

Joxer was once again the comedy relief, although it was poor Gabrielle who was the butt of the joke when she had to effect their escape from the stocks by taking the bag of black powder from its secret place INSIDE Joxer's pants.

Joxer: "Down my pant leg."
Gabrielle: "All right. Joxer hold still."
Joxer: "All right. Hm-m? Gabrielle we're in public"
Gabrielle: "Ooh what is that?"
Joxer: "Oh. Say it's [Clears throat] it's, um [Clears throat] "
Gabrielle: "Oh. Remind me to cut off my foot when we get out of here."
Joxer: "Hmm. Gabrielle, where did you learn to do that?"
Gabrielle: "Would you be quiet? I'm trying to concentrate."

(Saturn5... Joxer needs to pay for EVERYTHING, from here on out!)

So, Gabby frees them from the stocks, only to allow them both to be captured by Pao, who uses them to bribe her sister & Xena into giving up Mom's book of wisdom. With that power, and the power of the recently rediscovered "Black Powder" her army and her warlord will be UN-stop-able!

But, this is Xena, she ALWAYS a plan "B"! :bolian:

(The only time in 6 years I think I disagreed with Lucy's delivery of a line, occurs now.)

Xena: (Half angry/exasperated! Not calm like Lao Ma was when teaching Xena) "Yes, you do. You do. You said yourself, Lao Ma lives on in her legacy, and each of us holds a part of that. Her blood is in your heart. Her lessons are in mine. If we focus together, we don't need the book."
Kao: "`The hawk and the dove must be made one with the wisdom.' All this time, I thought it was Pao Su, but it's you."

One of the things I like most about this series is the interactions between Xena and Gabrielle. We don't see much of that in this ep, and one wonders if that contributed to Tapert's displeasure with it.

One of the few times we see anything between them, and one of the few times we get some humor not laced with Gabrielle exploring Joxer's nether regions, is when he's ready to experiment with his latest black powder concoction. Xena steps back to watch, then leans forward to grab Gabrielle and pull her further away from the erstwhile chemist.

Good thing. :techman:

So... Xena and Kao go after Pao with the power they've rediscovered from Lao Ma. Joxer and Gabby fight Pao's minions with newly made rockets and Gabby's sai's. (I gotta say, Gabby looks great in the chinese outfit they put her in for this ep! :bolian: As does Xena. :techman: )

The final confrontation with lightning bolts/death rays was pretty neat, and I was nice to see our two new "foster sisters" walk out of the conflagration unsinged, carrying Lao Ma's book.

The ending was sweet if one takes it at face value.

Kao: "Thank you, Xena. You are the strongest woman I have ever met."
Xena: "You never knew your mother. But you're a worthy successor to her."
Kao: "As you are, my sister."

Even though it ended on the conversation between Xena and "some other" female character as "Them Bones" did... at the end of the day this ep didn't advance Xena/Gabrielle's story at all, unlike "Them Bones" and I missed that.

:sigh:
