Any Xena:WP fans on the boards?

Hercules & Xena were both added to Amazon Prime video a couple of weeks ago, so I've finally been able to get back to work on Xena. I just hope this time they don't pull it before I can at least finish the season.
So far I've watched, The Reckoning, The Titans, Prometheus, Death in Chains, and Hooves & Harlots. I really enjoyed all of them, with Hooves & Harlots being my favorite so far.
So did they ever point blank make Xena and Gabrielle a couple or was it always more of a subtext thing? I had assumed that was always the intention with the characters, so I was a little surprise when they had them kissing Hercules & Iolaus in Prometheus.
And exactly how connected are the two series? Are there any instances where I need to watch them in a specific order? I had been planning on rotating back and forth with a season of Hercules then a season of Xena.

No one told the actresses either.

Half way through season two they had a meeting with the producer "Um, dude, are we gay? I think we're gay? We're cool with that, but it would have been nice to know."

They were afraid of the US censors, so the stories tread a lot of water avoiding labels.

Nearly always subtext due to the time period. It was pretty much started by the fans and the producers and actors played into it more and more as time went on.

There are some crossovers with Hercules, but Wikipedia should help there.

If memory serves, there's a story arc that involves both shows and some kind of tunnel to an alternate reality. It will make much more sense of you watch both shows for this one, because I found it confusing otherwise.

Presumably the '90s? Regular TV still tapdanced around same-sex couples in those days, to a large extent.

Saw a Cameo where James Masters explained how season 6 Buffy dialed up the sex 900 percent, because the new network they were on did not have a working standards and practices department yet, to tell them not to be sexy.

The storylines of Callisto and Hope both thread through a couple of crossover eps of Hercules. To get the whole story you have to watch all the eps.

Pretty neat trick, since Caligula wasn't born on the BC side. He was Emperor from 37 CE to 41 CE, when his own Praetorian guards killed him.

OK, thanks.

As a Child, 5 or 6 years old, I saw a lot of bare penises hanging from a phalanx of half naked centurions, and eventually I put Two and Two together by the time I went to college, and figured out that Mommy and daddy must have been watching I Claudius.

:)

Yes I was stretching the time line like taffy, to make a dad joke work, but so did Xena, since she managed to defeat the Hordes of Xerxes in 480 bc and then go on to buddy up to Brutus, not long after.

They did it first.

I'm sure I posted this earlier in the thread, but here's my Xena & Herc historical timeline:

Yeah, even just from reading through the episode listings on Prime Video it's pretty clear they just kind of threw stuff from any and all mythologies and historical eras together into a blender when they were making Hercules & Xena.
