Episode 125 season 6 #13 "You Are There"

ACT I: scene 1:

The "Journalist" is still standing outside the Tavern, setting up the story he plans to eXpose this evening.

Interviewer: (Speaking to the camera, as vikings are loitering in the background) "Xena... Warrior Princess. To many, she's seen as a savior, a protector of the downtrodden and the innocent. Others, however, see her as nothing more than a butcher, her hands stained with the blood of hundreds... no, thousands of innocent people. Which is it? Tonight, we put that question to the legendary woman, herself."

Scene switches to the inside of a (portable) TV studio.

Gabrielle is examining the small microphone a stage hand has just thrust into her "sportsbra".

The studio lights are still off, and several men are swarming Xena and Gabrielle as they attempt to "wire" the women for their first 20th century TV experience.

Xena: "Hey."
Gabrielle: (Protesting the roaming hands) "Hey! Watch where you put your hands!"
Crewman: "We're set. Roll sound."
Xena: (A belated defense of her partner's personal space, as by now all stage hands have beat their way off the set.) "Yeah, you watch where you put your hands, buddy."
Interviewer: "Xena, welcome. And also with us this evening, Gabrielle, the battling bard of Poteidaea, Xena's constant travelling companion, and the chronicler of her deeds. Glad you could make it."
Gabrielle: (She looks over her shoulder to the stagehands scattered about) "Uh, thank you. It's, um it's good to be here."
Interviewer: "Good." (Then drops the BBoP like yesterday's news as he turns to the WP) "Xena, first to you. You don't have exactly the greatest reputation here among the Norseman. As a Valkyrie, you used Odin's runes to visit a reign of terror on the people of this land."
Gabrielle: (Leans in to whisper to Xena) "Everyone's seen the tapestry."

Interviewer: "So, why come back now? There's no love lost between you and Odin."

(The interviewer isn't interested in what she has to say... only in showing off his own theories about what exactly is going on in her battle scarred heart.)

Gabrielle: (Gabby to the rescue!) "Oh, see, they were... they were trying to kill her daughter."

Gabrielle: (Jumps up to hold Xena back) "Actually, uh, this interview is over."
Interviewer: (Stands up to call after the two women as they exit the studio) "Come on, Xena. Why don't you just admit it?! You've always lusted to have the power of a god and now you're here to kill Odin! Isn't that right, Xena?! You're here to kill Odin!"

Episode 125 season 6 #13 "You Are There"

Before you ask, Michael Hurst (The guy playing the interviewer) is NOT playing Charon this time. The mask WAS the one he uses when he plays the boatman for the dead, so we'll forgive you if you were faked out. Michael did coach the actor playing Charon to talk like Jimmy Durante (for you whippersnappers: http://biographydvd.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Jimmy-Durante-Biography.jpg ) so he'd sound like the previous incarnations of the character.

[The River Styx]

Interviewer's Voice: (As we watch the boatman draw near) "Xena's protestations of innocence aside, Odin would do well to fear her considering the fate of many others who have crossed her in the past and ended up here on the shores of the River Styx, in Hades."
Charon: "Nah, I can't deny Xena's been good [Charon-- Boatman of the Dead] for my business. Wouldn't mind a vacation. But hey, it's better to be workin' than not workin', right?" [Laughs]

But Xena has sent me some pretty heavy hitters, Elainus of Mycenae (Athena's "girlfirend" from Amphipolis under Seige), Velasca (the Amazon who would be Queen from The Quest"), uh Mark Antony, Callisto, you can even make a case for Caesar, himself. You see, these people do not lose their mortal coils without a fight." [Laughs]
Caligula: "Hey! Sometime this eternity!"
Charon: "Unlike this guy, who's just been askin' for a one-way ticket to the Underworld if you ask me."
Caligula: (To the interviewer/camera) "Because is this gonna take long? You know [File Photo of : Caligula Former Emperor of Rome -- Deceased], because I've been waiting for this stupid barge forever. That boatman? I've been bumped twice already. Peon! Damned arrogant ass! Doesn't know who I am."
Interviewer: "It'll only take a moment. I wanted to ask you a few questions about Xena."
Caligula: "Xena? You just wanna ask me about Xena? Fine, I'll tell you. She's a snake! A treacherous deceiver, like the rest of her sex. Never turn your back on her. She and that-that-that bard of hers-- yeah, like we don't know what's goin' on there, huh? Yeah, and they want you to think that Xena fights for honor?! Oh!"
Interviewer: "And she doesn't?"
Caligula: "Look, I've spilled enough blood in my day to know why anyone does it, it's the scent of it, the taste, the thrill! Xena's no different! I'll show you." (Turns to the man standing behind him in the line) Hey, you! There, who killed you?"
Man: "You did, beggin' your pardon, I think you were drunk. You slit me open from here to-- "

Caligula [Interrupts] "Uh, b-b-ba!"

Charon: "Yeah, yeah... you may have been a big-shot on Earth, but down here you're just dead. Get... used to it. Come on."
Caligula: (Shouts as Charon drags him away) "Xena's evil! Don't let anyone tell you otherwise! I-I was a god! A living god... and that bitch took me out."
Charon: "All right. Oh there's one more thing I'd like to say. At least Xena pays her fare unlike another so-called superhero I know. More like... super-cheapskate. That's right, I'm talkin' about you Hercules. [Growls] Hercules."
Interviewer: (Turns to the camera for his solitary sum up.) "`I was a god... a living god... and that bitch took me out.'"

Scene switches, this time instead of a "file photo" of the topic in question, we get an "artist's rendition". I guess there ARE limits on the research that a 20th century "journalist" can accomplish when traveling 2000 years into the past.

Interviewer's Voice: [Artist's Rendering Valhalla is shown] "Odin declined an interview for this story, but a source within Valhalla, did agree to speak with us on a condition of strict anonymity."

(Since the "journalist has been upstaged by this "apple" revelation... he decides to do a little upstaging of his own. Breaking his word to provide strict annonymity, he reveals WHO his annonymous sourse is to the rest of the viewing audience.)

Interviewer: "Before we get into that, you claim to have masked your identity in a magic cloak of invisibility. But isn't it true that only Odin himself knows the mystic runes whereby he can make himself invisible."
Odi's Voice: "Damn it." (And now he makes himself appear)

Odin: "So she can become a god! Look, she'll return Ares to Olympus [File photo: Ares God of War] who will in exchange make her his queen."
Int: "But surely Ares and Xena have an adversarial history."
Odin: "Hm-m, you buy that, do you? Huh? You would. Did you ever stop and think why Xena didn't kill Ares when she had a chance? Hm-m? It's because she's got a thing for him! She's always had a thing for him! So Xena's gonna be a god, or a goddess, or whatever. Well it's not gonna happen,

(Now he steps out from behind the pine tree and marches forward to interrupt the blonde woman sitting on the side of the pond washing up. FORGET what this guy wants to know, "I" what to know what happened to those HOT TUBS?)

Interviewer: (He keeps knocking incessantly) "There's definitely somebody in there. I'm gonna keep trying."
Ares's Voice: "Whaddya want?! I'm busy!"
Interviewer: "Are you Ares, the former god of war?"
(I swear we hear the sound of a toilet flushing... but since there weren't any back then it MUST have been my imagination! Finally a shirtless former god of war opens the door, with a LARGE mug of frothy ale in his hand)
Ares: "Who wants to know?"

Interviewer: "According to Odin you and she have cut a deal whereby she will reign by your side as your queen."
Ares: "A-ha! A-ha-ha-ha-ha! Xe-Xena's had plenty of opportunities to be my queen. Frankly, the job doesn't interest her." (To put it mildly!)
Interviewer: (Notice he's still ignoring info not consistent with his thesis) "Have you spoken with Xena recently?"
Ares: "Listen, buddy, I wasn't the only god sent down from Olympus. Why are you buggin' me?"

Interviewer: [Interrupts] "I'm gonna go in here, just go, um-- " (and the 2 push past him and into the farmhouse)
Ares: (Impotence in the face of challenge does not become him.) "Hey! This is private property!"

Interviewer: "Follow me. Check it out."

Interviewer: "Try and get... " (And finally the former god of war grows some backbone and tosses the "civilized" members of the 4th estate out on their ears.)
Ares: "No! Get out! You are animals! Scavengers! Get outta here!"

Act II continues later....

For now just a simple observation. In the last 6 seasons, I've frequently wondered where Xena gained her "polish" because by the time she met Gabrielle most of her brutal Warlord manners were gone. On my rewatch I realized that "polish" must have come from her time with Odin and the Valkyries. What was striking to me, the first time through with this ep.. was that "polish" was mostly missing WHEN Xena was dealing with the 20th century wiseguy, er journalist.

At first I thought it was TPTB way of showing Xena WASN'T as mannered as I thought, when compared to our 20th (now 21st) century standards.

Then I realized something.

This 20th century guy was the illmannered one. The Klingons would say he was without honor, the way he went after Xena and her friends and unmasked Odin to justify his own existence as an award winning "journalist".

It made me think of the last time we were on this farm, and the "neighbor lady" came over to chat with Ares and his lovable pooch, Horace.

Greba: "...I mean, animals don't go to war or lie or cheat or betray each other."

Hmmm.

"Nigel", our 20th century civilized gentleman has already done some of that, and in fact will do most of that before the ep is over. :alienblush:

Michael [Mic]: "Let me put it this way-- if it were my tail feathers on the line-- I wouldn't trust Xena."
Interviewer: "That's not a very charitable attitude, coming from an angel."
Michael: [Archangel Michael] "Archangel."
Interviewer: "Archangel... sorry, I... [Clears throat as Michael waves off the unintended slight] Surely, as an archangel, you are a creature of light, ethereal and pure. Isn't it your job to believe in the essential goodness of man?"

Michael: "She puts her own self-interest ahead of the greater good. Did you know, she risked unleashing Hell on Earth to protect her own daughter?"
Interviewer: "But then, surely, she prevented that by killing Mephistopheles on Earth."
Michael: "And by doing that she fated herself to take his place in Hell."

Michael: [Voice Reverberates] "ARCHANGEL! [Normal Voice] And if she's capable of doing that, of seducing an archangel into assuming the throne of Hell, you tell me...who wouldn't she be willing to screw over?"

The journalist is falling... falling... falling (you get the idea)... He actually (to my ears, if not to the folks at whoosh) screams "Mommy" as he falls.

As with all falls, eventually there is that sudden stop at the end, and this stop was in the bowels of Hell!

Interviewer: "Please, try not to avoid the question. The public want the truth, a portrait of the real demon behind the myth."
Lucifer: "The real demon?"

(The king of Hell stops walking away and turns back to growl!)
Lucifer: "Xena! You dare mention her name in my kingdom!"
Interviewer: "So you're...you're not a fan of the warrior princess."
Lucifer: "Let me ask you something. Do I look like a guy who enjoys his present position?" (He puts a claw up Nigel's nostril) "Do you think I asked for this gig?! I used to be an archangel on the way up! And then she came along!"

Interviewer: [Chuckles] "Well that's not an impossible dream. Given Xena's exploits on Earth, I'm sure (Judge not, lest you too shall be judged, Nigel!) that she's bought herself-- a one-way ticket to Hell."
Lucifer: "I wish."
Interviewer: "Hm-m."
Lucifer: "With all her do-gooding I fear she's escaped my wrath."
Interviewer [Clears throat] "In a sense you're defending her character, which, of course, is what Satan would do, try to defend one of his own demons on Earth."
Lucifer: "Y'know, you're a real pain. I can't wait to get you down here."
Interviewer [Chuckles] "With respect, sir, that's not going to happen? You see, I'm not a murdering warlord... no, no, no I'm, uh I'm an award-winning investigative journalist. (His voice goes up several octaves as Lucifer massages his shoulders a little too familiarly) I'm a member of the fifth estate."
Lucifer: "Like I said I can't wait to get my claws into you."

Interviewer: "Not the kind of words you'd expect to hear, from Eve, the messenger of Eli. Whatever happened to walking the path of light, Eve?!"
Eve: "[F---] off!"
Interviewer: "You want your mother on Olympus, don't you? You wanna see the god of war put back on his throne... so that you, and Xena and Ares can continue your bloody menage a trois! (Eve throws a right cross and knocks him onto the ground, much to his ratings pleasure! He turns to his cameraman as the Elijians stalk off, to ask...) "Tell m...tell me you got that. You got that, didn't you? Did you get that? You got that, huh?"

I love the dvd interview with Adrianne Wilkinson about this scene. Its her fav "Eve" episode based on this scene and she talks about how people thought she wasn't going to really "swear" when she acted. "I don't know what they expected me to do" she says, as the script explained she was to curse her heart out. She did laugh that most of the crew didn't know she WAS supposed to be cursing, and that they couldn't understand why she was "allowed" to curse.

Can't find the dvd interview on the net, but I did find this one with AW that is interesting (not related to the ep, alas.)

Just watched Athens Academy of the Performing Bards the other day and it was ok but not as good as the clip shows will eventually be.

Xena: “Oh, you’ll get in, Gabrielle. You’re a good storyteller. I only remember one story told me when I was young. It was about two orphans who decided to search the world for their families. And it’s all about their adventures and how they kept searching. But the part I remember most is the end.”

Re: Warrior Princess... LOVED the sidesaddle... LOVED the pink ribbons on the warrior armor... but what I really loved was Gabrielle going crazy the first time she met Diana (whom was pretending to be Xena. Gabby didn't even catch on when "Xena" ran away from the bandit.)

Gabrielle: “OK, I just wish you would give me some warning when you’re going to test me like that.”
Diana: “Gabrielle?”
Gabrielle: “Yes? Are you all right? What happened at the castle?" (The Faux Warrior hands Gabby a note from the real Xena) So, you’re Princess Diana who just happens to look exactly like Xena? Hah! It’s test day, isn’t it? Well, you’re gonna have to do better than that.”
Diana: “You mean, you don’t believe I’m Princess Diana?”
Gabrielle: “Hmmm, not for a minute.”
Diana: “But you’ve got to. I can’t pretend to be Xena without you’re giving me a few pointers. I haven’t been out of the castle in years. I got lost three times on the way here, and I’m missing my father already. And now, you don’t even believe I’m me. You think I’m Xena. Well, I can’t be Xena, ‘Cause, I’m not Xena!”

Nigel has been invited to meet the ancient Norse version of deep throat in a cave. Her identity is so secret, we have not a single screencap from "Mike's Images" to illustrate it.

While there, he FINALLY starts to LISTEN to data that contradicts his own views.

Interviewer: [Whispers] "The source. [Gasps] Who are you?"
The source: "That's not important but what I have to tell you is. You're following the wrong story."
Interviewer: "What do you mean?"
The source: "Xena's trying to put a god back on Olympus, all right but not the one you think."
Interviewer: "But which god?"
The source: "You'll have to find that out for yourself.

The cloaked informant gets quite exasperated when Nigel at first refuses to pick up the scent of the true story...

Interviewer: "Wait! If Ares and Xena aren't conspiring, what are they doing together?"
The source: "This isn't about Xena and Ares. Xena will play whatever card she needs to to get what she desires."
Interviewer: "What if she desires to be a goddess?"
The source: "Fool. Xena doesn't wanna rule the world. She wants to save it."

Interviewer: "How can you be so sure?"
The source: "Because she saved me."

Interviewer: "Wait! Where do I go from here?"
The source: "Follow the love."
Interviewer: "`Follow the love.' Hm-m."

Interviewer: (He chews thoughtfully on the stem of his glasses after she leaves) "Hm-m." (Then without thought sticks the stem in his eye. ) "Ah."

I just have to say, I love watching Gabrielle's face during this scene, especially since she "knows what's coming" and Xena doesn't. In fact, I love watching Xena's face when she's trying to guess where this line of questioning is heading, and her suspicions re: why Gabby kept this to herself!

Gabrielle vs Elektra

NOT my taste in music... but if its yours this has the best of her fights... including the Gabrielle vs Xena in "Old Ares" :bolian:

Don't get me wrong, I'm GLAD she "grew up", but it always makes me smile when I see that clip of her punching the guy in "Dreamworker", and she turns to confirm with Xena, "Punching is okay?" 0:02

And although I always smile when she nails Xena with her staff by the campfire, I always cry when she does the same by the tree in "Return of Callisto". Again, I don't care for the music, but I do like that outfit she's fighting in during their 2nd trip to "the land of Ch'in.

Do you remember, season 5 "Seeds of Faith", when Gabrielle was nearly seduced by the dark side, by Ares the murderer of Eli... to join forces with him?

This next ep shows you why that would have been a gigantic folly, had she done as he wished.

Luckily, she's smarter than the average Amazon Queen, and for good reason.

As Xena once told Glaphyra in season 3's The Dirty Half Dozen"...

Xena: "Gabrielle's been through more than you'd think, yes, more
than you. And, despite everything, she doesn't carry hatred toward others.
Good people don't."

Before we start Episode 126 season 6 # 14 "Path of VENGENCE" I think it only right to get us up to speed on the character that drives this ep. Especially since its the last time we'll ever see her.

Oh, and mea culpa re: an error in the review of "You Are There"... I was wrong when I said the "next" ep was directed by Michael Hurst. He didn't do "PoV", but the one AFTER this one... "Return to Helicon."

Episode 126 season 6 # 14 "Path of VENGEANCE"

There's a tribal council being held, with Amazon Queens from many lands represented. A new Queen, and her tribe, is being courted to join the others.

As you might expect, the soldier doesn't find an officer to relay the news. He finds a Warrior Princess... AKA: A Warrior MOM!

Manager: "I'm sorry."
Gabrielle: "They won't take us, either. He says there's a legion of Roman soldiers coming through."
Xena: "All this movement, back towards Rome. I guess this new emperor's really serious about waging peace, huh?"
Gabrielle: "Well, thanks to you."
Xena: "Eve's the one who set him on the road to peace. Let's try the next place."
Gabrielle: "Well, whoever it was, I'm just glad there's an end to the fighting."
Xena: "Yeah."

(Rich at Whoosh.org was kind enough to investigate the names of the Amazon Queens back in 2001. Here are the findings. :vulcan:

I (Rich) was intrigued by those new Amazon leaders in "Path of Vengeance" (and in the next "Helicon" episode as well) so I did some quick research on the web:

Mawu-Ka, the african leader, seems to take her name from a West African goddess of the moon, Mawu. "Mawu" is also a language spoken in the Ivory Coast, and "Mawu-Ka" means literally "People of Mawu".
Kanae, the polynesian leader, apparently takes her name from a Maori legend. "Kanae" is the name of one of the flying fish who spared Urutonga, the daughter-in-law of the Maori moon-goddess Mahina, while they attacked her husband.
Gwynn-Teir, the celtic red-haired leader, is probably inspired by Guenn Teir Bronn, the welsh goddess of motherhood, considered to be the celtic equivalent of Artemis.

An aside I

"Path of Vengeance" is in one sense a "boring" ep. Boring in that there seems to be very little going on in the ever evolving story between Xena & Gabrielle.

"Seems" being the operative word, here.

In fact, this whole ep is one HUGE foreshadowing of the season finales.

In "reality"... this whole season has been a huge foreshadowing of the finale.

I looked back today, and noted how in the premiere, when we first meet the angry Varia, we see the danger in lack of forgiveness, in "Coming Home".

Xena: (Walks into the tent where Varia has Eve tied up) ...Eve, Eve, sweetheart, why didn't you tell us?"
Eve: "I couldn't. I know how much the Amazons mean to both of you." (I don't think this young lady knows what her Mother did to the Amazons in HER evil days!)
Xena: "Did you think we would love you less?"
Eve: "What I did was unforgivable, you said so yourself. If only they knew how sorry I am." (Nope, she DOESN'T know!)
Xena: "I know how hard it is to say you're sorry especially to someone you love. Gabrielle, when I hit you with my chakram... "
Gabrielle: "Xena, it wasn't your fault... it was the Furies. They drove me to try to kill your daughter. I've forgiven you. You should, too."
Xena: "I nearly lost you."
Gabrielle: "But you didn't.

For 6 seasons we've followed this tall Warrior, and for 6 seasons her guilt AND her inability to forgive herself has been ever present.

As Quentin Tarantino said in his double dare interview, Xena is always paying 10 cents on a dollar, and she'll NEVER catch up on her "debt".

In "The Haunting of Amphipolis", Xena discovers there's no such thing as a free lunch. Every choice has consequences, many unintended and unforeseen... like the death of her own dear Mother when she tried to save Eve from the gods. She can't go back and change the past (Unlike my Heroine, Admiral Janeway!

) but she can promise to change the future.

Xena: [Whispers over her Mother's crypt] "Mother. Oh! What did they do to you? They've taken everything. Now you can't rest. And where was I? Oh, Mother. I will find you. Wherever you are, I will find you. I'll make it right. I'll make this right."

Guilt, over what she's done.. and over what she failed to do.

She saved so many strangers, but when push came to shove, she wasn't there to save her Mother from death by burning at the stake.

Do you wonder why she can't forgive herself?

If you do... then just remember what Eve said in that same ep, when visions of her past and herself as "Livia" taunted her.

Eve: "I'm not Livia."
Vision of Axed Victim: "You don't believe us? Look!"
Eve: "It's not me."
Vision of Livia: "Oh, it most certainly is. We're the same, the same cunning mind, the same dark soul, the same love of power. Yah! You see how they cringe in fear of us? We didn't just kill them, we trapped them forever in limbo."
Eve: "I can't undo that. If I could help them, I would."

"The apple" doesn't fall too far from the tree, does it.

"Heart of Darkness" even reminds us that being "good" is no excuse.

Xena: "I never promised anything when I vanquished Mephistopheles."
Lucifer: "But you were aware that came with certain obligations. Even heroism comes with a price, Xena."

But the real message came at the end of the ep, when the messenger of peace (Eve) met up with a disciple (Xena) of the messenger of friendship/love (Gabrielle).

Eve: "You're back!"
Xena: "Part of me never left."
Eve: "I never should have doubted you."
Xena: "After all you've seen and been through, I can't blame you for thinking the dark side had won. I just hope that one you'll believe as strongly as I do in the power of love to save lives."

Gabrielle in "Gurkhan" stirred so many memories for both Xena and Eve, of their misspent youths...

Gabrielle: "The calm way your daughter talks about her past."
Xena: "She knows what I know. There's nothing you can do to change the past. You can only work to make the future better. That's why she's so worried what you might do once you're inside Mogador.

I liked the end of Gurkhan, not just becasue of its message of forgiveness.. its "out there" if you are willing to accept it", but the realization that everyone is a sinner in someway, and we all need forgiveness from someone.

Gabrielle: "Your mother will be so happy to see you."
Sarah: "How could she ever love me again, after what I've become?"

An aside II

Some people need to hear that lesson over, and over, before it sinks in. If it took two eps for Gabrielle to learn it after killing one innocent... should we be surprised if her mentor still hasn't really learned it herself?

Gabrielle: "Hm-m-m... you saved me today, Xena, against the greater good.Why? Isn't that what we've been fighting for?"
Xena: "Gabrielle, in everyone's life, there's something that goesbeyond the greater good. That's what you are in my life. I wasn't about to let you die out there if there was something I could do about it."
Gabrielle: "What if it was my choice?"
Xena: "Especially if it was your choice."

And in the next ep... "The Abyss", after much lecturing from Xena and 2 near death experiences with infection and then a BBQ... Gabrielle finally has an epiphany.

Gabrielle: "Xena, I did what I had to do. I will learn to live with my mistakes, no matter how terrible they may be, but that's the way."

Good on you, Gabrielle. :bolian:

And why... you might ask.

We've known this woman for over 5 years, and this is the first we've heard of this monster "she" created. What OTHER sins are out there, waiting for her to reveal to us? Did she EVER confess her sins to Eve over her murders of the Amazons 35 years ago?

So WHY do "we" love her so much, is she is so evil, if she has committed so many heinous acts?

"The Ring" reminds us.

Xena: (To fangirl Brundhilda, worshipper of the evil Xena, while smiling at Gabrielle) "Well, I've gotten a lot smarter since then. I've learned to respect life, love, and peace."

And just to show Gabby isn't the only one that needs to listen to the sermon more than once...

Brunhilda: "She really is giving up the power of the ring. She is not the Xena of the legends."
Gabrielle: "She fights for good now."
Brunhilda: "I don't know. I mean, in battle she's everything that Iimagined, yes."
Gabrielle: "There's more to being a warrior than skill. There's fighting for what you believe in, for people that you love."

Xena has learned to value love, and forgiveness above all. What I found amazing about "Return of the Valkyries", was that for the first time we see her BEG for forgiveness of someone not her family, not Gabrielle.

Then I realized why she did it.

Not because SHE deserved it.

No, because it was the only way she could save Grinhilda!

Xena: "I forged this ring. Now I have to use it to undo the evil it has caused. Grinhilda, listen to me. You weren't always this way. It was my actions that turned you into this beast. Grinhilda, I put the evil into this ring. I can undo it, too, if only... ! Grinhilda, you must listen to me. Grinhilda, look inside your heart. Find the woman you once were. Forgive me. Forgive me. Forgive me." [Yells]

Again, I loved the last line of the show... when asked about the noble transformation of evil Xena into Good Xena... she simply said...

Xena: "It wasn't magic"

And she looked at Gabrielle.

Speaking of great endings... "Old Ares Had a Farm" gave us another one.

Gabrielle: "How are you feeling?"
Xena: "I've learned something since coming back here. You can't look for peace in the world around you. You've gotta find it in your own heart. I was happier when I was a kid here 'cause I was loved and I felt like I belonged. I was lucky then and I'm lucky now."
Gabrielle: "Me, too."

But remember one thing. ALWAYS remember one thing.

From "Dangerous Prey"...

Varia: "You'd know about that. You wiped out a whole tribe of my sisters all by yourself."

She SEEMED evil.

Which was why she could answer Gabrielle so honestly at the end of "The God you Know"...

Gabrielle: "How are you feeling?"
Xena: "Dirty. How should I feel?"
Gabrielle: "Xena, there was nothing you could do. He was evil."
Xena: "No... he was damaged. He wasn't evil."

And in case we have short memories, in case we think it was just an Amazon tribe in Siberia, and a Valkyrie in Norseland, and a godlet in Rome... the interviewer in "You Are There" reminds us THAT is just the tip of the iceberg.

Interviewer: "Xena, Warrior Princess. To many, she's seen as a savior, a protector of the downtrodden and the innocent. Others, however, see her as nothing more than a butcher, her hands stained with the blood of hundreds no, thousands of innocent people. Which is it? ..."

Again, a strong foreshadowing of the finale. What DO you get a guilt ridden Warrior Princess for her 6th anniversary?

The Source: "This isn't about Xena and Ares. Xena will play whatever card she needs to to get what she desires."
Interviewer: "What if she desires to be a goddess?"
The Source: "Fool. Xena doesn't wanna rule the world. She wants to save it."
Interviewer: "How can you be so sure?"
The Source: "Because she saved me."

She's no longer evil. But she still needs forgiveness, and she can't ask for it because... as Tarantino said... she "doesn't" deserve it... in her heart of hearts.

Even Ares knows this. The "Bastard." (He WAS her war mentor, afterall)

Ares: "Do I think she did it because of how she feels about me. [Sighs] No, I mean... don't get me wrong. I mean there were sparks. I mean, you could see that, right? Yeah. But no, she pretty much did it for the same reason she always does...uh redeeming herself for her evil past: [Falsetto] `Oh, I killed so many people!' [Normal Voice] `The pain, the pain,' you know. But my offer, it was genuine. I mean, there is a place for her here. It's not what it used to be, though..."

1. A show that not only breaks the fourth wall but hammers it's way through the fifth as well!

2. Micahel Hurst giving a great performance as the reporter (last time we see him in the Xenaverse?).

3. Alexis Arquette proving that being dead doesn't make Caligua any less of a jerk. Note Charon refers to Valesca also being dead so Xena or Herc or someone must have finished her off offscreen (or she lost her godhood when Olympus fell?)

4. The devil pointing out that as the most evil being in the universe he really doesn't have very much to cover up. :lol:

5. The reporter being very tempted by the madam's offer of her gorgeous hookers giving him 'The ride of the Valkyries' only to discover Ares in the bordello also looking to 'dock his longboat' :guffaw:

"No I'm not.....OH CRAP!"

6. Aphrodite's delighted reaction to being on camera 'OH MY...what's this?" contrasting with her less than ladylike reaction to being mobbed by the love groupies "Get...GET OFF ME!"

7. Gabby setting herself up as Xena's PR woman 'This interview is over!'

8. Xena beating Odin in a fair fight (once again, could a mortal really do this? surely more proof that she's a demigod?)

"You are there" is just a ton of sugarfree fun.

Tell me, as a long term fan, was there a hue and cry at the "unanswered" question at the end, or did people generally laugh it off?

What makes me laugh when he asks this is that I agree with Xena. It "isn't" anyone's business/beeswax what's going on in their (foreshadowing for "Many Happy Returns?

) bedrolls by the campfire.

Its not like either are running for President, or Governor.

I know you like the demigod theory, but I think Odin was basically bluffed into giving up too early. I don't think he realized Xena can't kill gods anymore, and "folded" the moment it looked like she had the upper hand.

I don't know which is my fav ep of all time. :confused:

I do know I have an extraordinary fondness for "Ides Of March" and for "When fates Collide", I guess its the romantic (?) in me showing through.

Either that or I have a disturbing fetish for crucifixions.

We see why Varia takes all this personally, since her little sister died at the hands of Livia while trying to protect Varia. Eve has just agreed with Varia's recount of the facts, from 6 years ago.

(Varia pulls her sword from the scabbard on her back, ready to mete out Amazon justice.)
Xena: "You're not doing this!"
Gabrielle: (For the 2nd ep in a row, Gabrielle has to physically restrain the Princess & lucky for those Amazons she's successful!) "By Amazon law, Xena has a right to defend the accused!"

(The Amazons lead Eve away, and Varia resheathes her sword and walks off as Xena eyes her closely)
Xena: "Did you notice that sword Varia had?"
Gabrielle: (Even quicker on the uptake than usual) "Eve had a sword like that, when she was Livia."

Xena: (Suspicion plays across the Princess' face) "That's right... she got it fromAres."

(Instead of conferring with her daughter to prepare their defense, Xena follows the Queen of the Queens deeper into the caverns. Although these two first met well over a year and a half ago in the xena-verse timeline, its been within the last 6 months or so that the two "bonded" in "Dangerous Prey" when Xena saved Varia and Avenged Queen Marga.)

Xena: "Varia, Marga believed that one day you'd be a great queen. She asked me to train you for that, but I see I failed her."
Varia: "No, you haven't failed. I'm grateful for your training, but I'm on my own now."

Xena: (To Xena, this Queen is yet another woman who fell for the wrong line of BS) "He doesn't care about you or the Amazon nation!"

Xena: "You don't need him. Varia, it's within you to lead the Amazons. You're the one."

Varia: (Proving Xena's first statement WAS correct, Xena has failed Marga.) "No, Xena, you're wrong, I do need him."

(Eve's trial resumes... and one has to wonder, does part of Xena think, "There but for the Grace of Gabrielle go I?)

Xena: "All right, Eve why did you raid Varia's tribe?"
Eve: "Slaves."
Xena: "Slaves... but why would any commander lead a regiment of men through swamp and forest and then engage the fiercest warriors in the land in the vain hope of making them slaves? What really happened?" (Eve doesn't answer, which provokes her Warrior Mom to get up close and personal with her guilt ridden daughter) "Eve, Ares is leading the Amazons in a suicidal war against the Romans. You can make them see how he operates. If you don't care about yourself, at least care about them."

[Flashback, 6 years ago, Livia's command tent. 3 Commanders await her.]

(Liva breezes in like she's arriving for a party.)
Livia: "So, where are we?"
Roman Commander: "We hold these areas, here, here, and here. These others will fall before the end of the day."
Livia: "Hm-m-m-- all right. Leave me."

Ares: (He comes up behind her and envelopes her. Recall, at this time Xena has been "dead" for 20 of her 25 years and Ares has NO idea who he's hugging)) "What's wrong? Campaign not goin' to plan?"

Ares: (He points to a small area off to the side, as if he's just noticed it.) "Ya haven't been there."

Ares: "Not all gains are shown on a map. I'm talking about glory... the name, `Livia.' What would the world say, if you were to conquer the fierce Amazons just for kicks?"

Ares: "Or even better, turned them into slaves? See, I know this Persian warlord, Gurkhan. He has a taste for the exotic."
Livia: "Hm-m-m it doesn't make sense. Even with a surprise raid, I'd still lose men."
Ares: "Trust me on this. If you enslave the Amazons you can watch the name Livia spread all over the world."

Livia: [Sighs as he lays her down on to the map of her campaigns. She pulls a dagger from her boot and jabs it into the map where the Amazons live.]

[Back to the Present, which is "our" ancient past...]

Xena: (Continues to pace around Eve as she interogates her) "So Ares was behind the raid."
Eve: "Yeah."
Varia: (Denial ain't just a river in Egypt, baby!) "Ares wants a strong Amazon nation. He's helping me to build it."
Xena: (Pities the blind woman who refuses to believe the truth even when its staring in her face) "Ares helps no one but himself."
Varia: "I'll find out the truth from him." (And she stalks out of the council room in search for her patron god.)
Xena: (So says the voice of experience in choosing the WRONG path.) "I'd consider Eve's verdict carefully, because you're also choosing a path for your people."
Kanae: "You've had your say, Xena. The Amazons will decide now."
Gwinn-Ter: (Addresses the blonde walking into the council's midst.) "You wish to be heard, Gabrielle?"
Gabrielle: "I wish to join the Amazon council in the deliberation."
Mawu-Ka: "As a queen, you have that right."
Cyane: (She's so darn cute... and to think we "knew" her mother before Cyane was even a twinkle in her eye.) "We could use your wisdom."
Gabrielle: (Turns to her "best friend", the woman who refuses to be an Amazon.) "Xena, I think I can make them understand what Ares is like. Varia already has her doubts."

Xena: (AGAIN, the voice of experience) "Still, Ares can be very persuasive. He's managed to con them all so far."
Gabrielle: "Just be patient, Xena. Let me try this. There's a wisdom in the Amazon ways."
Xena: (Now Xena... lets not get petty. Afterall it was you who nearly left Gabrielle over things too silly to even list right now.) "Like the time they painted you blue and made you howl at the moon to consecrate your queeniness? Look, if you can't talk 'em 'round, I'm getting Eve out of here the old-fashioned way."

Meanwhile....

Varia: (She runs into a back cavern and slams her sword point first into the ground as she screams) "Ares!"
Ares: (Twinkles in) "Whoa, is that any way to request the company of your patron god?"
Varia: "You were behind the raid that killed my sisters. Eve told us what happened."
Ares: "And you believed her."
Varia: "Just tell me the truth."
Ares: "OK, Artemis was content to let your sisters dwindle away in separate tribes. I saw it coming. I tried to warn her."
Varia: "That doesn't explain the raid."
Ares: "Well, I knew when word of the raid spread, it'd bring the tribes together. You see, hate is a powerful emotion, Varia. It unites people."
Varia: "That's no excuse for turning my sisters into slaves."
Ares: "I knew Gurkhan would never take Amazons as slaves. They're too spirited to fetch a dinar on the auction block. So Livia took 'em to market,couldn't make a profit. I mean, what she did... " (Stupid "Queen", didn't she HEAR what he just said? HE encouraged Livia to bring them to market even when he knew they'd never sell. What did he expect Livia to do, then? Turn them loose so they could come back and attack her? THIS is the Queen who executed Roman soldiers who surrendered to her troops.)
Varia: "What?"

(In the dvd interviews, Adrienne Wilkinson (Eve) talks about this revelation. She thougth Ares was lying, and during the tableread looked for confirmation from Rob Tapert. Rob simply said, "Oh yeah, SHE DID those things" and Adrienne for the first time realized "what a bitch" her Livia character was!)

Ares: "She threw them overboard. I mean, she tossed them like spoiled cargo. They still had their shackles one."
Varia: (Varia looks so vulnerable here.) "I want to build an army to bring them back home."
Ares: (And here the slime turns on the seduction to full power.) "Well, you can never bring them back, but you can stop this from ever happening again. Eve and Rome were hand-in-hand in the slaughter, so you know what you do? You lead your sisters against the Romans, and you show them you mean business."

(Meanwhile, back in the council chambers... Queen Gabrielle is having her say. I guess there's no such thing as recusing one's self for conflict of interest in Ancient Greece.)

Gabrielle: "You know that Ares was behind the raid. Why do you condemn Eve?"
Cyane: "Ares may have put the idear [sic] in her head, but it was Eve's hand on the sword."
Kanae: "She admits her crimes. It is our duty to uphold our laws. If your heart is truly with the Amazon nation, you must know we speak the truth."
Varia: (Walking into the council once again, without bothering to discuss Ares' defense of HIS culpability in these acts...) "Amazon tradition states that the council must speak with one voiced. We're growing impatient. What is your vote, Sister?"

I loved the scene outside. Xena is sitting on a step near where Eve is tied, just playing with her sword. Suddenly they are summoned back itno the council to hear the verdict. Xena is obviously expecting great things from the Battling Bard of Potadiea AKA Queen Gabrielle. Gabby, what do they say about that road to hell?

Mawu-Ka: "We have all made our votes. What have you decided?"
(Xena has just walked in and smiled at Gabrielle)
