Any word on a Teaser Trailer with this summer movie season? And..

...And I suppose if they are planning a teaser trailer this summer, then they will need a film title by then.

The summer movie season is fast approaching, but the only "big" Paramount films I see coming out this summer (assuming they attach the ST teaser to a big Paramount film) are The Dictator, Madagascar III, and G.I. Joe II. However, I don't see any of those being the exact target audience for this movie, unless they are expecting/hoping this new GI Joe film has a wider audience than the first one.

Titanic is being re-released by Paramount in 3D, but that comes out in April, which is only 6 or 7 weeks away.

Either way, I think we WILL hear about a teaser AND a title by May or June this year. Does anyone think it won't be until the Christmas Movie season? Personally, I think "Teaser" in the Summer, and a "Real" Trailer for Christmas.

The movie won't be out until May 2013, so an early teaser probably could be in the fourth quarter of this year, IMO. Anything earlier might not include any footage from the film but just feature something with the Starfleet logo, perhaps...

Hmmm. I suppose you may be right. Now that I think about it, we didn't get the Teaser for ST XI (the one with the Enterprise under construction) until the January prior to its release, and attached to Cloverfield.

Considering that, I guess it's more likely that it will be attached to a Paramount movie coming out in the Christmas season (maybe World War Z ?). So, I guess even the official title can wait until later this year.

I imagine that something will come out later this year but it will not contain any kind of a spoiler about the big "secrets" they're keeping, though we might get an idea where the movie is heading, as far as a theme.

BTW, trailers are not just attached to films from the same studio. Exhibitor Relations for all distributors work hard each day to get their trailers placed on the films that are out that will reach the biggest and common audience at any given time. It's an interesting and sometimes challenging job.

True, but often they are -- especially the Big "First ever" teaser from a big tent-pole movie. Some people even go see a movie specifically because a certain teaser trailer is known to be attached to it (and not necessarily because they are terribly interested in the movie the trailer is attached to).

For example, if Paramount wants to get more people to see World War Z this Christmas movie season, they may attach the Star Trek Teaser to it, knowing that Star Trek fans who were "on the fence" or non-committal about seeing World War Z may be persuaded to go see it because of the promise of the first look at the Star Trek XII Teaser.

I do agree that after that big "first Look" teaser, the regular movie trailers would be attached to any studio's films.

I was in a large group who went to opening night of "Cloverfield" in Sydney, mainly to be among the first to see the teaser trailer. We were lucky, but not every capital city venue in Australia had the Trek teaser attached to their print.

I heard of someone actually crossing timezones just to see it earlier than his friends, only to be caught out by a Trek teaser-free print.

I worked in distribution for 15 years. Keep in mind, if there is another huge film opening at the time, and Paramount wants that audience to see the new Trek trailer, they will make arrangements to put Trek trailer on as many prints of that other film as possible. Esp if it can ship from Technicolor with the trailer attached. There are loose trailers, that chase prints, and there are trailers attached prior to shipping. Of course now that films are also transmitted digitally many distributors just need to OK the trailer placement and not chase the print.

I am aware that there are special trailer and preview events. A good example was MI:GP in IMAX with the Batman content. They were not the same distributor, were they?

I wouldn't be surprised if teaser trailers are out this summer. The first one was out something like 11 months before the film was ORIGINALLY intended to be released.

july or august sounds right for a first teaser with a first trailer around helloween and a second trailer in february/march, maybe a 30 sec. super bowl spot if paramount wants the hype to explode.

I remember how bizarro yet awesome it was to see the Enterprise being built, on the ground, by guys with blowtorches. And Nimoy's "Space... the final frontier!" at the end. It was mega triumphant.

And then, months later, seeing a crappy, back-of-the-cinema bootleg of the first proper trailer on youtube coz I couldn't wait for the official release 4 hours later!

Then the second trailer, the awesomness of which I'm still recovering from.... ("James T. Kirk was a great man... but that was another life!")

STXII has a lot to live up to, in the trailers and teasers alone!

True. Done right, a teaser or trailer can be emotionally impactful. I don't even remember the actual movie I saw any more, but I very well remember being surprised by the teaser for TUC appearing in the coming attractions before it. It was the one that used clips to recount the previous 25 years of TOS and invited us to join the crew for one last adventure. It actually made me tear up. A few people in the theater applauded when it was over.

I wonder if anyone has ever gone to the movies just to see a teaser or trailer, saw it, and then got up and walked out of the theater without watching the movie.

People did - at "Cloverfield", esp. if they had already seen "Blair Witch Project" and got motion sickness from the handheld realism.

Not quite. Cloverfield (with the attached teaser) was released in January 2008, a good year and a half before Trek was released.

It should be noted, however, that at that time Trek was expected to be out in December 2008, and the release date was moved after the trailer first hit.

If anything, I bet there will be some sort of teaser trailer hitting this summer at the earliest. Abrams seems to like "announcement" trailers. Perhaps the new Trek movie will get one.

Oh, yeah - definitely. I remember hearing about that with the first couple of Star Wars prequels, especially for Phantom Menace. Lots of people would show up well in advance, paying full price for whatever movie the trailer was attached to, then leave the minute the trailer ended. There were more than a few reports of sold-out showings playing to near-empty houses.

I just would be happy knowing the full title of the new film. I can remember being a tad disappinted last time around that the 2009 feature had no subtitle.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if the 2013 movie doesn't have a subtitle either.
It's gotta have some kind of distinction, 2009 was simply titled Star Trek they can't call the next one the very same thing, so, it's gotta be Star Trek II or XII or Star Trek: Whatever.

Of course, it's possible Trek XII won't actually have Star Trek in the title, it could just be known as The Final Frontier, or Where No Man Has Gone Before or something like that. After all, Abrams makes no secret about being a Star Wars fan so he could decide to follow their practices (Episodes 5 and 6 are more commonly known as The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi without Star Wars in the title) and this method seems to be working with Nolan's Batman movies. On the other side of the coin, however is when a TV series tried to leave Star Trek out of the title (Enterprise) that was blamed for costing the show ratings and Star Trek got inserted into the title.
