Any train fans around?

Well, one of Canada's largest railroad companies, Canadian Pacific (CP Rail) is set to merge with an American one, Kansas City Southern, and together they'll have the only railroad linking Canada, the U.S and Mexico, which should have some huge ramifications. It's cleared regulatory hurdles and will come into effect next month. The interesting thing in all this has been the battle between CP and Canadian National, the other major freight operator in Canada, and their bid in trying to woo KCS, which they almost succeeded until regulators sided against them.

I'm a little surprised there was a rail company as small as KCS left with all the mergers over the years.

Yeah, wasn't sure how common that was anymore. Regardless, another interesting aspect is that it's a takeover by a Canadian company of an American one, not vice-versa which is what usually happens.

For any model train enthusiasts.. ok its not scale, or anything, but a nice little maglev setup

That's pretty cool...... You can also get a similar thing with a battery inside a long coil of copper wire

No details in the video but 4014 which is the only one of 8 surviving Big Boy locos was filmed doing a test run yesterday. Not sure if the diesel loco was for power or incase of break down.

reading the wiki entry for 4014, she's going to doing to a run from Cheyenne Wyoming to Omaha Nebraska (raod distance is about 504 miles) so they could be doing some testing before the trip.

They’ve torn up a lot of track in Alabama.

As a child in the very early 1970’s, we still had lots of toothy telegraph poles running alongside them. Some roads also ran along side them…a great enjoyment for me to watch from the back bench seat of the family car.

There is one left hidden in some trees at my job site here.

If anyone's interested, here's an immersive trip through the Canadian Shield. It's fairly lenghty at nearly 3 hours long, but it has some beautiful scenery through Northern Ontario, Canada. The unique thing about this route is that they use a set of 2 Budd cars on a flagstop (request stop) system. They do it this way because the region is underserved, and they can't afford to run a regular train due to not quite enough passengers, but it's an important route becauuse for some isolated towns along the route, it's the only way to get supplies and groceries. In fact you hear them talking about groceries in the beginning of the video while they pick up passengers and load up their canoes. The Budd car system is quite interesting because while it is self-contained, it doesn't look like an engine, but simply cars moving about on their own.

A hydrogen power train is now on the rails for testing in Quebec.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/hydrogen-train-quebec-city-1.6888891

It's going to be running from now until September 30th.

Passengers think it's an improvement over the diesel unit that was running previously.

Uses 50 litres of hydrogen instead of 500 litres of diesel.

Be interesting to see how it goes long term.

There was a similar test run in Scotland a little while back but that unit has now been dismantled and the hydrogen unit returned to the Uni that developed it (came across the video of the process being done at Bo'ness on youtube).

Trains are awesome... but you better respect the fact that you can stop a lot faster than they can. As seen here.
