Any new fans?

Hell, I'm new to this forum. I wanted to know if any new fans were recruited from seeing the new movie. My dad was the around the target age when star trek was first created and he was a big fan. He has tried to get me to watch them before, but I was too young or complained that it was stupid. So I went to see the movie because I heard it was good and now I'm hooked! I've started watching TOS shows with him and now I think they're awesome. Just wanted to know if there were any others that are brand-new to Star Trek...

I'm one of the newbies who have since moved up in the universe with prodigious posting.

I honestly had no interest in Trek prior to this film (got totally sucked in by Quinto, in particular), though I have warmed to the original TOS crew (particularly Nimoy and Kelley).

my story is just the same as nile's, except for the part about dekelly.... honestly, i wish bones would lay off spock already.... but anyway, i just got through all of TOS and find myself in an empty place waiting for the new movie that hasn't even begun filming yet. not too keen on pursuing any of the older films, i saw a couple of them years ago but i don't think too highly of the idea of watching them do all that stuff as old men. yikes!
i suppose i have to admit it to myself now, tho', don't i? - i really am a geek after all. :P

Well, the fact that I am openly and proudly a nerd with years of experience in nerdgasmic fandoms, certainly makes the transition to Trekkie disturbingly comfortable and easy.

I mean, after Warsie, Whedonite, Elvis fan (of the "Jumpsuit Junkie" variety), Mozartean, history geek, Egypt nut, obsessive travel tourist, fangirl status on a number of other celebrities, film aficionada, Burtonite, Poe nut, linguistics freak... What's another?

Always glad to see new fans around here; me, I've been a Star Trek geek for as long as I can remember. I'd hoped this new movie would draw in some new and/or younger viewers, and perhaps inspire them to check out more of the Star Trek universe... looks like that hope has been fulfilled.

Yeah... Don't speak a word of Vulcan (yet). LOL. Well, I can proudly say "kiss my *ss" ("e chuta") and "bantha fodder" ("bantha poodoo") in Huttese, which is the extent of my sci-fi/fantasy language skills.

I'm unlikely to be like that fan who provided Elvish translations for Peter Jackson. Heh.

I'll stick to "Terran" languages. See, I am catching onto a few Trek-isms.

Hi, Cassy4! I too was resistant to Trek until seeing the movie; now I watch a new TOS episode almost every day. Fun having a new obsession, isn't it?

My dad was also a big fan of the series when it first ran and he was pretty excited to see the movie. I thought the movie looked pretty sweet based on the trailers and I'm a huge fan of Zachary Quinto. My dad and I ended up going on opening night and I absolutely loved it!

I've already watched all of TOS...I think I'm quite addicted.

As a Trek fan for twenty years now it's great to see new fans joining the club. Especially those that haven't been interested in scifi. If I may make one suggestion please do yourselves a favor and also watch Babylon 5 on DVD you will not regret it.

Being that I probably was prime-candidate Trek bait, it's not as surprising for me as it is to see some of the people who post things on something less geeky like IMDb saying stuff like "Am I weird for..." and specify that they aren't nerds already.

This movie has definitely made it less nerdy to be a Trekkie. Probably the least nerdy the franchise has been since it was a low-budget '60s show with a lot of comedy, cheesy effects and lovable icons (it is not inherently stigmatized as "nerdy" like the fanbase, TNG and such spin-offs have come to be). In fact, I would say this film de-nerded the franchise to the more approachable level it once was in the TOS era.

The fun and adventurous spirit was returned, with an added touch of romance and drama to attract the fanfiction-writing "fangirl" types (believe me, they are a force--remember Titanic and the fawning over Leo? Or half the people in that icon thread?). This film certainly made the franchise more female-friendly, and they are noticeably vocal as new fans.
