We saw how insane Spock became in Amok Time. How can we humans know what effect close proximity can have on Vulcans and Romulans, Not only might unknown pheromones be extra potent, but some kind of mind link might happen. It might make even logical Vulcans and disciplined Romulans act in irrational ways.

D'you know, I'm not usually one for retconning stuff like that backwards into TOS, but I'll pay out on that, the whole affair feels distinctly like Kirk and Spock have been recruited for shenanigans...
