Any Comic Book Fans Here That Are Annoyed By Comic Movie Only Fans?

Re: Any Comic Book Fans Here That Are Annoyed By Comic Movie Only Fans

I envy people who can think that Iron Man is the coolest thing ever without having endured the pain of trying to read his early 70s stories.

Re: Any Comic Book Fans Here That Are Annoyed By Comic Movie Only Fans

The comic movie fans that have never read the comics or were never fans of the source material are really starting to get annoying to me anyway. Most of these people never heard of Stan Lee before the 2008 Iron Man movie. I cant even go to comic con these without these dopes walking around and only coming to the con to see their favorite actor. They aren't even there for the comics. Geez its so annoying these fair weather fans only like the material now that they are movies. These people are probably the same people that beat the crap out of kids who like comic books back in school. Any other comic book fans getting annoyed? Am I overreacting?

Yes, you are overreacting.

I read comics. I just don't confuse them with movies and expect the movies to be like comics.

When I read the OP, I wasn't sure if it was for real or someone was trying to wind us all up. I'm sorry to see it's the former.

It doesn't bother me that there are many fans of the movies who are unfamiliar with the comics. Personally, I have read some DC and Marvel comics here and there, and I seek out some of the more renowned stories. I have great respect for the source material. But I simply don't have the time to become intimately familiar with 70+ years' worth of details from so many comic book titles, especially with so many resets, continuity changes, alternate universes, extreme variances in writing quality over the years, etc. And I also don't expect the movies to be 100% accurate adaptations of the comics, partly due to the factors I just mentioned.

But it does bother me when the movie-only fans show complete disrespect and disregard for the comics, as if the movies are the only things that matter. You try to explain, "well, in the comics, it was actually this way..." and they just say "I don't care about the comics." For example, if they think Batman started as a TV show in the sixties, or if they think X-Men started as a cartoon in the nineties and expect the movies to be "more like the cartoon".

BTW, I am a fan of the "Men in Black" movies, but I have never read any of the original comics (mainly because I can't find them anywhere). Does that make me some kind of cretin?

And this could be broadened to a more general discussion of movies adapted from other source material, be they books, ancient legends, TV shows, or whatever. I've never read anything by Tolkien, but I enjoy the LOTR and Hobbit movies. I'm sure plenty of people would be up in arms about that.

Don't get me started on Frank Miller's "The Spirit" movie, though... :klingon:

I'm somebody who's mostly familiar with comics of the 60s through 90s, who stopped actively collecting new titles in 1999. My primary exposure to new material featuring classic comic book characters is via TV and movie adaptations.

And nobody would be making these films if lots and lots of Joe Schmoes who've never read comics weren't buying tickets, so we should be grateful to them.

Yeah but comic fans carried the industry through the lean years. If it wasn't for us they wouldn't be making these films.

You're a big damn hero.

And yes, you're overreacting. This sort of attitude of entitlement is really toxic to fandom, and one I find very troubling. Nobody owes you or me or anyone else in fandom anything.

Enjoy what you enjoy and let others enjoy what they enjoy.

Please...not more of this wankish fanboy "more fan than thou" horseshit!
Got persecutorial problems? Go see a counselor....or a priest.

I am not one who has read a lot of comics, and hell, didn't even get into the Harry Potter books until after I saw the second film. Where my knowledge of any of this lies is nobody's frakking concern! I enjoy what I enjoy, and if some pissy little fanboy has a problem with that, they can get in line and kiss my ass.

Fanboy bullshit like this, Pubert, is a large reason why fandom is no longer fun!

If you aren't a fan, then you can't be a victim! Life's too short to get all whiny about why one group of fans rubs so strongly against your self-righteous fanboy world view.

Ultimately, we all need to get past the "Us" versus "Them" mentality, which isn't helpful for anyone.

It's not just our private clubhouse.

Yes.

I read comics on an industrial scale in the 80's, working off and on in a comic shop both during and after University.

I drifted way from them in the last twenty years or so and have barely read a comic this century. I just lost interest, but the MCU has captured my attention. I'm a big fan, owning all the Marvel movies. I've even gone back and picked up the pre-MCU Marvel films.

Admittedly, I have got a grounding in the comics, but my love for the films is due to the films being good, not so much due to the source material - I haven't started reading comics again...

I commend your succicntness, and much more easy going take on this. :)

Would that I had such restraint. ;)

Re: Any Comic Book Fans Here That Are Annoyed By Comic Movie Only Fans

I'd have to say that just like the new Trek movies, the MCU movies are not made for the "fans."

As long as there are new fans discovering the material, what difference does it make how they got there?

All I know is that a large majority of people are assholes. The larger the fandom gets with these pseudo fans the more assholes we get. Fandom was more fun when there were genuine fans in it. Now you go to a con and there are a lot of
pseudo fans that are running around being rude and nasty. Im right about this because I have seen how the cons have changed over the years.

OH!

SPACE!

A comic collector, who has been collecting comics for 10 to 40 years needs 3 to 5 bedrooms to store and display his/her comics with the respect they deserve, or the master bedroom to just cram it all in there like an episode of hoarders, is always considering buying a bigger house because comics need room to breathe.

So we amazing people with our LITERAL tons of comic books need to rent multiple storage cubicles, once the spouse starts laying down ultimatums about how the children shouldn't have to live in a tree house outside, but what SACRIFICE do these Johnny come lately half arsed infidels have to demonstrate their effort and love of the comic book experience?

8 to 10 dvds and a few ticket stubs?

#### them.

They are not what we are, so they can call themselves something the #### else until they have bled as hard as we have to be what we are.

Marvel Zombies.

Eh I only have a small amount from my collecting days. I still collect but mostly silver and bronze age classic. Thinking of getting some golden era books next. I keep the number down to issues that I like.

Fandom managed to have assholes before the movies. There have always been rude and nasty people in fandom. I don't think much has changed. Calling the newcomers less than genuine fans kind of makes you the asshole.

I've been reading comics for 50 years, pretty much from the time I could read. . Never really encountered any grief because of it. Maybe it was different when I was a kid. As an adult I even turned a few friends on to comics. Am I a better, more genuine fan because I read comics as a kid?

On the continuum of unfairness, pain and cruelty that are part of existence, the embarrassment of being mocked as a comics geek is not worth a sneeze. Enduring it entitles you to nothing.

It entitles me to mock pseudo fans that come to the comic cons and have no interest in the actual comics. Very enjoyable.
