Any chance of X-Files 3???

Finally watched X-Files 2 last night on dvd, missed it the first time around. Was this movie even promoted?

While the main story plot was "meh"
(what is Chris Carter's obsession with Frankenstien? and what made Carter and the Studio think this story was worthy of a 2 hour feature film???),
I thought the character development between Mulder and Scully was fantastic!

Even though I was disappointed with the movie, I would love to still see one more X-Files movie that wraps up the dangling plot threads from the series finale. In particular, the fate of William and 2012 Alien Colonization plot.

Has anyone heard any rumblings of a third/final movie? Or did the poor box office of X-Files 2 kill any chance of a third movie?

I think Carter & co. are still optimistic about their chances. But it may take them another 10 years or so, so who knows? Personally, I'd be interested in a 3rd one. My only stipulation is that it doesn't suck like the 2nd one did. (And if they could add Doggett to the mix, that would be awesome! Thanks.)

I think they're planning on making one in 2012 when the prophecized alien invasion / end of the world takes place. Hopefully it will be nothing like the godawful second movie and that's coming from someone who was absolutely obsessed with the X-Files back in the 90s!

No rumblings have been going on except by Carter and that was prior to and just after the release of XF:2. It did horrid at the boxoffice. As a fan and one prone to being glad I have more of what I liked even I was bummed about what we got in XF:2.

It really was just a filler episode placed on the big screen. I'd love to get a third that really hits on proper themes of the series. I figure they have about 2yrs to make it happen for the 2012 timeframe. After that I'm not sure there would be a point. I could see the series being reimagined for TV again if they don't get to an X-Files 3 for the 2012 tie-in.

I enjoyed the X-Files film. I thought it had some interesting themes and some interesting things to say.

Fox Chairman Tom Rothman said in October that it was up to Chris Carter, David Duchovny, and Gillian Anderson whether a third film will be made. Frank Spotnitz is on record as wanting to do it, but has yet to say anything further about the film's chances, although he has said that it would wrap up the mytharc if produced.

The next X-Files film (assuming it's produced) should not be released in the summer. Summer is for A-list heroes only.

I don't know, does it really matter at this point? Assuming a third film is produced, it's likely the end of the road for the franchise. Once the mytharc is wrapped up, I'd have no problem letting it rest, so money doesn't really matter.

I don't agree that the mytharc is a necessary or wise storyline for another feature film. It might work for a mini-series on cable, however.

And money does matter. Fox has no motivation to make another film if they can't make money.

I'd love to see a 3rd film, but given the poor box office of I Want to Believe, I'm not really optimistic. I hate to say it, but there just may not be much of an audience for The X-Files anymore (which might stem from dissatisfaction with and viewer erosion in the ninth season of the series).

Ideally, the third film should be an epic movie that provides closure for the colonization mytharc, but I doubt 20th Century Fox would be inclined to greenlight a big-budgeted feature after the failure of the last one. So while I would hope for another big-screen outing, I'd be content with a TV movie as well; The X-Files started life on TV, and there's no reason it can't end in the same format.

FWIW, I thought I Want to Believe was not without some merit. True, the plot was kind of weak, and the scope was decidedly unambitious, but I did love seeing Mulder and Scully again, and I thought the characterization was spot-on.

I am sorry to say that I don't see them getting a third film out of the X-Files franchise. The film only made $20,982,478 total in the domestic box office and $47,373,805 internationally. It made about the same as Star Trek: Nemesis at the box office when all is said and done.

I'm sorry to say that I don't see a third film happening.

JJ Abrams, where are ya???

I'd love to see X-Files 3, suspect I'm in a minority but I actually enjoyed the second one. Ok the plot was a bit lowkey but I enjoyed seeing Mulder and Scully again far more than I'd thought I would.

Did I Want to Believe do that badly at the boxoffice? I mean it can't have been expensive to produce (if it was God knows what they spent the money on).

Not so bothered by the mythology, I always thought it weighed the show down, I prefered the monster of the week style shows.

I might be one of the only people who loved the 2nd movie. I thought the personal stories of both Mulder & Scully were really well done, and I thought it only right that the main plot should play second fiddle to this.

I found the sombre atmosphere to be quite engrossing, the film looked and felt great, ok it was a bit TV episodeish, but X-files was a TV show. Even the first film only dealt with the fall out of events from the TV show. Due to all of the other themes worked in and the really great cast Xfiles II actually felt more theatrical than the first IMO.

So yeah, XFIII, yes please!
