Anti-Matter Explosions

Gadrin

Commander
Red Shirt
Okay watching the end of Civilization last night (boy I could barely keep my eyes open) the Enterprise transports the bad-guy's AM reactor to the ship, then out in space into the path of the bad-guy's vessel, torpedoes it and it explodes -- sort of -- and shorts out the bad-guy's ship so that all's-well-that-ends-well.

I seem to remember the tiny Delta Flyer's warp-core, which I assume is just an AM reactor or the AM "fuel tank" exploding (in the ep Drive) and they had to be like X million kms out of the area, because the original explosion was designed to take out as many ships at the finish line as possible.

:wtf:

Any other AM explosions that follow this type of "fit the story line" type of approach ?

Any kind problem here can be resolved by simply saying that the power/explosive capabilities of the ‘Civilization’ reactor were far smaller than the Flyer’s warp core.

Given the technological difference two hundred years down the line, size shouldn’t be much of an issue. But in the end of the day one would imagine the power requirements for whatever Garos (the alien in ‘Civilization’) was up to would be far less significant than propelling a ship many times in the excess of the speed of light accounting for the additional destructive weight of the Flyer’s core.

The Delta Flyer was also in pretty bad shape and lacking defences and had to eject the core (it literally just popped out from under the ship), while Enterprise and the alien ship had their defences up, and one would go out on the limb that the crew would’ve transported it far enough away

There was another example in one of VOY’s early seasons where Tuvok disabled several Vidiian (I think) vessels by detonating an Anti-Matter pod with a photon torpedo.

But trust me the “fit the storyline” approach is pretty much the only thing that matters when coming up with this kind of stuff.

The Antimatter reactor wasn't a warp reactor, probably requireing more antimatter and a greater power level than even a small ship like the Delta Flyer. Not to mention that the Flyer was building to an overload when it was ejected, if the Malurian reactor was just operating normally it would likly creat a smaller blast than if you put it very close to the edge like the flyer. If it were just the antimatter explosion that was the concern, Voyager and the Tactical cube in Unimatrix Zero would have taken heavy damage when it was blown up.

That's what I thought ;)

By the way, I suppose I was wrong it's Oils well that ends well when the beautiful apothecary informs Archer to hit the "resitic oil lamp" then when hit will become a stun muntion...and science saves the day ! :p

Yeah, kind of ironic really that the writers used the same trick to get out of tricky situations just a few scenes apart.
