Antagonists Poll, season 2

^^^

I tend to agree. I had volunteered to do the DS9 poll and had to pull out, partly, because it was too damn difficult to pick the antagonist/bad guy: it was a headache trying to find the balance between being too specific (therefore possibly leaving people out in the case of Sarek) and being too general (and getting comments back like the ones above regarding the Klingons).

I sympathize with you EMH. I tend to think the Klingons make for a pretty good choice of antagonist for 'Yesterday's Enterprise' - they were a clear threat to the characters of that story (I mean, damn - they blew up the f***in' Enterprise!!) I think that falls under the category of "gave the crew headaches/problems."

As far as Sarek is concerned, that's really very difficult. The syndrome itself, as was suggested, might be a better way to categorize the particular antagonist in 'Sarek,' but it's kind of splitting hairs isn't it between that and "emotions that are out of control"? I think everyone gets what EMH was getting at.

Not every episode in the season has an antagonist listed, so I don't see why "Sarek" needs to have a poll choice. You could split hairs and add ignorance, a dead civilization, or the titular object for "Booby Trap," but that seems to be a bit much.

In my view, an antagonist is much different than a problem or obstacle.

regarding the Klingons, Akiraprise put "The Vidiian Race" in the second season Voyager poll...so why not put "The Klingons" in this poll?
One things for sure, it's not easy choosing who to put in the poll.

Some episodes I skipped because the antagonist was a dust cloud or something. I try to stick with individuals as much as possible. The episode where I put the Vidiian race was "Deadlock" where the ship is split in two and stuck; a Vidiian ship comes and attacks, boards Voyager, and the Vidiians attack the crew and begin harvesting their organs. They definitely qualify as antagonists but there is no individual Vidiian named. Also I think it's important to look at the show as a whole. In VOY we didn't meet all that many individual Vidiians, or they were not named. The Vidiians were frequently portrayed as a group. In TNG on the other hand the Klingons got a lot of development and we met many individuals.

If I were doing the TNG poll I would probably leave the Klingon Race in season 3 for "Yesterday's Enterprise." They were definitely the primary antagonists in the episode. Just because they are an option doesn't mean anyone has to vote for them. Same with Sarek's emotions. They are an option but I won't be voting for them. That's what's neat about doing these polls, the public decides who moves on to the next round. If we as a whole think a choice is ridiculous it won't move on, so no harm no foul.
