Anson Mount as Pike SAVES This Show! Wow.

I guess he's some sort of Messiah?

What's interesting about Anson Mount's acting choices for Pike is he seems to be playing him more like Bruce Greenwood, and less like Jeff Hunter.

This isn't Hunter's angsty, angry and emotionally closed off Chris Pike from The Cage, this is more like Bruce Greenwood who can be stern but also is laid back 'father figure' and has a sense of humour and fun.

Whether this is from Kurtzman or not, I feel like STD needs that type of presence, instead of another emotionally closed off character like the Jeff Hunter version.

Which makes more sense. I assume after “The Cage” we would have seen Pike being less brooding and more in command of himself, no differently than how we saw Sisko moving on from his grieving in “Emissary”, which I always thought was reminiscent of “The Cage”.

It’s a weird effect. Kinda 1970s neckerchief/turtleneck:

Slap a badge on that middle guy and you could have the new dress uniforms.

That being said, I can already see James T. Kirk coming onto this series by Season 3, in order to keep the CBS subscriptions afloat. Either as Captain, or Burnham's first officer that she mentors and introduces to Spock.
You know, my first reaction to this is that they just wouldn't go there, and if they did it really wouldn't fit what we know of Kirk's history.

But then I thought about it some more, and realized, yeah, they probably would go there, especially if there was a perceived need to give the show a boost. And 2258 isn't necessarily too early for Kirk to be an XO (though it might be pushing it a bit, and it's certainly too early for a captaincy). And we really don't know much (canonically — there's lots in the books) about his career between the Farragut and the Enterprise.

So I guess I wouldn't bet against it...

Look at all those Pikes.
Look at all those awkward necklines. The TOS version simply got it right. If they're not going to stick with canon and make it ribbed, why not just go with a version that actually looks good, rather than trying to come up with clever modifications?

Imagine a show featuring Kirk, one of the most iconic characters in science fiction, reporting to Burnham, who is barely a character. Surely they wouldn’t, if only to keep the focus on Burnham.

Yeah, that's 70's fashion, this is TOS era so it needs to be 60's fashion!
