Another way to have defeated Khan in TWOK?

Or then it's the first step in raising shields, seldom necessary operationally because non-training missions involve energizing at departure already. Just like they would involve removing the safety pins and the grating from the torpedo launcher...

The idea of multiple shield layers is never properly explicit in TOS, and TMP with its choice of POV in the fight scenes fails to make graphic use of standoff shields held in the fashion a knight might hold his. But swimming inside the opponent's defensive perrimeter is an intuitive idea to begin with. And essentially Khan achieved that very thing: had he hoisted his skull-and-crossbones a tad earlier, even Kirk's tardy crew would have been able to raise shields. Being within practical phaser range is what defined being inside Kirk's bulwarks in this case - a matter of timing rather than distance.

I believe NEM or INS introduces the idea of a forcefield that goes up specifically around the warp core (though it's unclear whether that's especially useful). I don't have any issue with the idea that in TWOK 'defense fields' are similar forcefields intended to protect sensitive areas of the ship. Not nearly on the same level as shields, but providing some level of defense.

I believe it was NEM and the forcefield went down pretty quickly in the battle! :(

Well they do call yellow alert and "energise defence fields" - it's not clear what those fields are, but I always assumed it was a sort of secondary protective screen around the Bridge and upper saucer (as indicated by the graphic)
That's actually the unused Intruder Alert graphic from TMP. If you look at the side view of the ship instead of the top you'll see that the lit up area is one deck.

I never noticed the side view before, but there it is!

So, "energising the defence fields" keeps the senior officers' quarters extra safe? Hmmmm

It has been easily explained in the scene.

Joachim or another Augment: "They're still running with their shields down..."

Khan: "Of course, we're all one big happy fleet!"

except that the seen also shows the Reliant not responding to communication attempts. Also, they’re already on alert for potential danger from Carol Marcus’ blocked transmission. They even mention they might be heading into trouble.

Ships of a fleet can be hijacked and captains can go rogue, so alertness and precautions are still called for.

I always thought the display showed a bridge only anti-transport field

Or then it showed what it says on the tin: yellow alert might well entail activating certain intruder control protocols...

And we know from TOS precedent how Starfleet proceeds in such cases: you keep on approaching, keep on hailing, and you most certainly do not raise shields. That's how it went with every single encounter Kirk in TOS had with an unresponsive fellow starship.

Also, they’re already on alert for potential danger from Carol Marcus’ blocked transmission. They even mention they might be heading into trouble.

And the Reliant being in distress might be part of that trouble. She's just as likely to be a victim as a villain, and probably more so; tiptoeing around her might delay disclosure of facts relevant to the danger.

Ships of a fleet can be hijacked and captains can go rogue, so alertness and precautions are still called for.

As far as Starfleet sez, no, this can't happen: there are no mutinies and no hijackings.

Kirk knows better, out of personal experience - and apparently is part of the mechanism by which the truth gets suppressed.

Regardless, we again know how Starfleet is supposed to react. In "Ultimate Computer", Kirk's ship uses lethal weapons and kills 53 in wargames. Commodore Wesley's response? He hails. And apparently never raises the sort of shields that would help against further attacks.

Isn't that Sick Bay? As I recall, it was nested in the middle of the saucer for optimal protection. Though I suppose Ilia appears in Kirk's shower (:censored:)

...Which is controlled by buttons only Kirk can reach. Ah, the perks of the center chair.
