Another Voyager 1st-time watch thread

"The Web Planet"! OMG. So much love for that one! The costumes! The sets! Ian's tie getting eaten by acid!

And Barbara! The part with her fighting the Animus totally reminded me of Janeway fighting the Borg Queen.

And! This! Which I just found today, and already love.

ETA: Haha, it opens with your favorite, bit, too, Shatnertage. lulzy!

Finally found time to watch Voyager again, and it was fun! Though they didn't have Coleman Hawkins playing...

"Body and Soul"

I knew this was going to be a Doctor/Seven episode, and I was hoping we would get the classic Hawkins version of the song at some point:
[yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Q7J4PgrRsY[/yt}
But we didn't.

Seven seems to have a pretty short fuse with the Doctor at the beginning...I guess he's not the easiest guy to get along with.

And then they make the switcheroo--awesome! Jeri Ryan gets to do some excellent comic acting. Suddenly I could go for a giant slice of New York cheesecake.

And one of Larry Sanders' ex-wives is on the ship! Who would have guessed? Harry doesn't get to do much besides fake being sick, though.

Then, there's a B story with Tuvok going through pon farr, with only Paris there to help him through it. And Paris either has stones the size of a red giant, or is a moron. Here's why: There's a dude that's three times as strong as you who's been force-fed Viagra (more or less) and must mate or he'll die. You're the pretty-boy lieutenant. Wouldn't you want to stop the wisecracking and get the hell out of there before the super-strong, super-horny dude connects the dots?

And wasn't T'Pel the name of the faux Vulcan ambassador from "Data's Day?"

Plus, of course, his solution involves a holodeck. And poor Tuvok has to accept it. Until it gets turned off.

On the other ship, Ranek is putting the moves on the Doc in Seven's body, and legions of slash writers begin to contemplate the implications of Seven sensing the Doctor becoming sexually aroused while in her body.

This was a really, really enjoyable episode to watch...there was just so much to laugh at. And Ryan really nailed Picardo's cadences as the Doctor. On the whole, it reminded me of a classic Hollywood farce--in a good way.

Touching final scene, as well, with the shared meal.

"You became sexually aroused in my body!"

:guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

I love this episode, it's another amazing Robbie McNeill directed episode. :)

My one problem is with Tuvok relieving his pon farr with a hologram, how would that work exactly? Doesn't he need to be connected to someone?

^ I thought that "Blood Fever" established that 30 seconds of playing grab ass was enough to satisfy the pon farr, so I don't get what the fuss was.

We did see that the hologram wasn't enough for Vorik, so maybe co-ed wrestling was next on the list.

And wasn't T'Pel the name of the faux Vulcan ambassador from "Data's Day?"

Indeed. There was also a T'Pel mentioned as a relative of Spock's in the TAS ep "Yesteryear". (Let us all pause for a moment of baby-Spock squee.)

Anyway, this ep is hilarious and I love it. Jeri Ryan was brilliant.

And for everyone who wanted to see me on TV, here's your chance.
You are very handsome--certainly dispels the ugly nerd stereotype we Trek fans get stuck with.

Whoa! I missed that link!!!

You are a good-looking fellow. Also, I just learned something watching that bit of lecture. :) History of American gambling - that's an interesting specialty!

EDIT: Teeny tiny bit disappointed it wasn't shirtless to one-up Beltran. (But I suppose that might have been a very different lecture.)

I kid, I kid!

The shirtless one was a piece on the evening news showing me and a running group I was training with--I'm just plugging along at mile 14 of a 15-mile run, trying to look enthusiastic. It might be floating around out there somewhere.

Though if the lights had gotten any hotter, the cardigan might have come off.

Thanks for the compliment, too. I always think I'm pretty goofy looking, so it's nice to hear positive reinforcement now and then.

It's almost Mel Brooks-ish.

Love it, love it, love it. One of my favorite Voyager eps. When Jeri Ryan does the EMH, it's just great! Especially the cake eating scene.:guffaw:

I love it when "she's" responding to the shoulder rub in alien sickbay.

She does the EMH as well as Picardo!

I am really starting to feel sorry for Harry as I watch...

"Nightingale"

For the second episode in a row, Seven, Kim, and someone else are in the Delta Flyer together. Of course there will be complications. Kim chooses sides in someone else's fight.

This episode confirms my earlier theory that all of VOY is a paranoid delusion suffered by an about-to-graduate Harry Kim. Basically, the entire show is a worst case scenario for Harry.

In this episode, his captain pretty much laughs off his claims to be command material, and thinks, "How much trouble can he get himself into, anyway" before letting him take charge.

And you'd think by now he'd be a little less naive...I knew it wasn't going to work out. Everyone knew it wasn't going to work out. But Harry thought everything was going to work out fine.

And he's not just insecure--he's power-hungry, too. Why else would you want to take charge of an alien ship? And he's a micro-manager.

So the fun of this episode is laughing at Harry as he just digs himself deeper and deeper.

Though I'm going to once again call bullshit on Janeway telling him he shouldn't have gotten involved. The Prime Directive is (or was) limited to pre-warp civilizations, and neither Inari or the Kraytons (or whatever they were called) were pre-warp.

Janeway herself did almost exactly what Kim wanted to do in "Counterpoint,' putting her crew at much greater risk. So why is what he did so bad?

I think that she just tells Kim things are against the rules just to mess around with him.

The real fun of this episode, though, is the delightful B-story where Icheb thinks Torres has the hots for him. I am now officially an Icheb fan. That was really well done, down to Paris "challenging him to a contest." And Torres' reaction of "I guess I'll have to do the honorable thing" was priceless.

Of course, it would have been funnier if Icheb thought that Paris was coming onto him too, and they played off that for a while, but it was still pretty good.

Why is it that I like this show best when it's recycling Three's Company plotlines?

EDIT: Remembered that the guy who played Lokan had a really cool voice so I decided to check MA for the cast. Turns out he was also Detective Harris on Barney Miller.

Voyager had consistently good guest stars, didn't it?

Oh, mercy, this episode just made me feel embarrassed for Kim. And somewhat so for Wang.

An Icheb subplot is always full of win, however.

I LOVE Icheb! He's just so innocent and sweet. And brilliant.

I was pretty surprised at just how bad a leader Kim ended up being. I mean, a former Borg, who'd obviously had no leadership experience during her time in the collective, had to let him know he was a crap captain. Not good, Mr. Kim.
