another new uniform pic

For those interested, here is a pic of Pike's hat in "The Cage." It certainly looks as though it could have been intended to be part of the regular uniform.

They do bear a passing resemblance to each other, but either he sat on his or this chick put too much starch in hers.

Item to consider.

[*]Perhaps the hat in that Pike screegrab is a relic. Pike has it as a nod to what came before or a symbolism of his rising through the ranks. Thus this image has validity in whatever part of the movie it is located.

Speaking of hats in Star Trek, the security guard where McCoy was being held in Trek III also wore a hat.

Perhaps, though it bears the United Earth emblem that also appears on the jumpsuits and coffee cups and such aboard the Enterprise.

Also, to the person who said the new hat is not the same: Obviously, but neither is the uniform. My point was that hats are not unprecedented from what little we know about pre-TOS Starfleet.

In Kirk's era each ship had it's own emblem. Then, by ST:TNG, Kirk's Enterprise emblem was adapted by Star Fleet as it's symbol.

And of course the uniforms used on Enterprise included caps. It appears that in the original continuity (ENT-to-NEM or 1964-2005) hats were phased out shortly before Kirk took command of the Enterprise.

The hat looks weird, but so far they haven't really deviated too far. Could be a security officer, but who knows what colors they're using. The Pike era uniforms were never very well defined.

Seems similar.

Not sure I like this. Given the highly international nature of the style of Navy uniforms that became common in the late 19th and early 20th century (and are still used by Navies today) I'd be a bit disappointed if Star Trek were to take its inspiration mostly from recent US developments (which veer away from that 'standard').

Other people may have a different perspective on this, of course.

What We Have Seen So Far:

1) The cut and tailoring of this grey uniform and Pine's appear almost identical - the grey tunic is a little longer, though this may be a difference between the male and female outfits (jackets and shirts that fall high on the hip are difficult to tailor attractively for women).

2) The collar of this uniform and Pine's appear consistent with the collars that can be seen on the "trenchcoat crowd" from day one.

3) All supposed Starfleet outfits we've seen have matching slacks and tunic.

4) So far we've seen these outfits (or parts of them, near as I can tell) in: grey (today's), red (Pine's), teal, olive and white (the trenchcoated extras).

5) The only decoration we've seen on the outfits is a Starfleet delta on the grey outfit and a blurry insignia on the collar of Pine's. Many folks think that the insignia on Pine's is identifiable as a delta also.

Actually, that had pretty much happened by the time of The Motion Picture.
